Range Modifier
« on: July 17, 2020, 01:24:54 AM »
I am designing a laser turret and it says the range modifier is 50,000.   I cannot Google
or find via search what that means.  thanks

It is dependent on the range tech you selected for the beam weapon.

For laser, it is the wavelength, for meson, it is focus tech, for railgun, it is launch velocity, and so on.

The larger the range modifier is, the longer range your weapon has, with the same caliber.

The range modifier is basically the damage fall off of each weapon. So the weapon do one less damage for each band of the range modifier. A 25cm Far Ultraviolet Laser have a modifier of 50.000km and a max range of 800.000. Max damage is 16 so the damage falls of by one point for each 50.000km. A 30cm Railgun have with launch velocity 60.000km/s have a range mod of 60.000 and does 7 damage per shot and max range of 420.000.... the fall of is one damage for each 60.000km.

UIf you look at the Particle beam it does not have a range modifier stat at all and that is because it does the same damage through out all of its engagement range.

That's not how the range modifier works for lasers. Damage is inversely proportional to distance, so the aforementioned 25 cm far-UV laser will do its full 16 damage up to 50,000 km (1x RM), and the damage at any range beyond that would be [16 x 50,000 km / (range in km)] - 8 damage at 100,000 km, 5 damage at 150,000 km, 4 damage at 200,000 km, 3 damage at 250,000 km, etc.

Thanks... yes that is how it is... i just remember that the range modifier had something to do with the damage fall off of the weapon and did not remember exactly the formula for it.
