So who has fallen into Crack VI?

I have not seen anything to make me want to buy it.  I am happy with Civ IV.

I have read some VERY bad things about the AI. I think I will at least wait a few months, then reconsider it.

Also, it might be worth it to just wait the first, inevitable major DLC for more content. Or the second. Or the third. You catch my meaning :P

As soon as I finish this project for a client. I know I won't sleep once I started.

Warning Will Robinson!

Just went out and bought it, and discovered it requires DirectX 11 Hardware support on your video card.  Game won't run - I've only got 10.1.

Well, they're eventually going to release civ 6 for linux, so hopefully they'll patch windows versions to work with opengl too? Maybe 6 months from now? XD

Ordered a GeForce 1050 ti - should get here Thursday so we'll try again then.  I'd been wanting to get a new card anyway - my computer keeps locking up when the browser hits video content, and I've been suspecting it's due to an underpowered card.

That being said, I'm not very happy with the game so far.  I had to hunt all over to find a physical copy (ended up having to go to Target), 'cuz I wanted the usual cool map/tech tree inserts and didn't want to wait for one to be snail-mailed, then when I open the box it was essentially just a CD.  Then I couldn't play it - the release doesn't feel well executed.  I hope this isn't an indicator on the state of Firaxis' corporate health....

No, this is typical of modern video gaming.
You can have the cool tech tree as a .pdf if you buy the digital Collector's edition, of course.

Indeed. The only copies you can expect to have physical stuff in them at all is boxed collectors editions ( the ones you pay over twice the normal price for ).

I've even seen physical games in a CD case but without a CD inside and instead just a piece of paper with a key code for digital download. lol!

Oh, I know.  I just miss the good old days.  And I'm pretty sure that Civ 5 had *something* in it.

Steam has a lot to answer for.

I can't imagine the marginal production costs for a box and a map are that great even? I'm absolutely certain that the "collectors edition" does not cost an extra $20 to produce.

When I think about the amount of time I spent scrutinizing my Morrowind map.

A set of commemorative coins, and a book. That's what was in mine. Plus the Aztec DLC and a soundtrack I think.

My Civ 5 cd case had nothing but a steam code (not even a cd) and that was when first released.

Played everything up to IV extensively, strongly disliked V (found some mechanics broken, others fragile and AI-unfriendly and forcing ugly fixes).
I've watched a few gameplay videos, but haven't worked up any enthusiasm for Civ6.

I really don't care for turn based, hex tile, strategy games all that much. I prefer my strategy to be either real time, or turn based with a free form "map" (like Endless Space). That said, the Civ games are decent and I may get one of the newer ones if I see it for ~$5 on Steam.

Played every game in the series and found something to like in each one even if I played some more than others. So I'll get it eventually, when it comes for Linux probably.

Played it quite a lot. For some reason I can't get into in the same way as I have done with all the previous civ games (which is probably a good thing for Aurora development) :).

Me too (both on playing and not getting into it as much).  I think part of it is that they've made it a lot harder to understand what's going on - for example I still don't know how to figure out which cities have which amenities and how getting more would raise them for a particular city.  And it's not clear if the promotions available to apostles are one-time-only (like wonders) or if they're randomly chosen and able to repeat.  And how many points of which religion are in a city, and therefore what the impact of trying to convert it will be.  I know there have been 1/2 dozen things like this that I had to stumble upon in the GUI: "Oh, THAT's how you find that out".

In addition, it feels like a lot of the individual game mechanisms are less rich.  For example, it doesn't seem like city-states cry for help against other civs invading them any more - my recollection is that this would happen in Civ V.

On the plus side, I think I like the whole "boosting" concept for tech and social research.  OTOH, I'd REALLY like it if it would give me a warning when I'm 1/2 way there on an unboosted tech so I could switch to another one while waiting for the boost.

Im not.
I hate 1UPT, i hate the mobile/cell phone game aesthetics, i hate districts and many many more "features" in CIV 6. Only thing good about this game is music.
CIV 4 is still the God Emperor for me.

P.s. those frakking tech quotes are beyond awful .. Like they compiled them from some "top 100 cool quotes" clickbait site or something like that .. Compared to Alpha Centauri its a frakking joke.

Yeah I have to agree with this. Alot of stuff is much more hidden then it should be, probably for no other reason then the game to "look nice" on the surface, which is not appealing to players playing Aurora  ;D

I think districts are genius, a minigame with adjacency bonuses + putting the map to good use, and how they are tied in to everything else. But they cost a bit much ( or maybe I just didn't figure out how to get good production yet ).

Know what you mean. Wish that new AC version they made would have kept the old factions and backstory and been more of a modern remake

Are you talking about civilizations beyond earth? What I heard of it was it's basically civ 5 with an Alpha centauri flavour.

Beyond Earth doesn't exists, I refuse to recognize it's existence. Civ 5 Brave New World was the last Civ made until Civ 6.

Yes, must have been why I couldn't remember the name even. Maybe I should be happy they didn't ruin the Alpha Centauri name by using it for this, now there is still hope for a proper sequel some day.
