Work in progress warships
« on: October 05, 2011, 05:00:22 AM »
So I'm a few years into my 5.53 campaign now and decided I should start building proper warships. My naming conventions were borrowed (ie. shamelessly stolen) from Steve's designation systems he's used in his campaigns. I think they're quite useful, however, so I don't feel too bad about it.

I currently have ion engine technology and somewhat decent sensors (active sensitivity 21, EM and Thermal 11). The following is my proposed main battle line ship. It's meant to be versatile enough to fight both as a unit with other ships of the same and different classes, and capable of performing minor independent missions as well if need be. Ideally, however, it'll fight alongside a dedicated escort frigate or destroyer and a destroyer leader with a squadron jump drive. The technology for those classes is currently being researched.

Code: [Select]
Arleigh Burke class Destroyer    10,000 tons     1142 Crew     1914 BP      TCS 200  TH 144  EM 0

Fuel Capacity 450,000 Litres    Range 115.7 billion km   (446 days at full power)

Mk 1 Guided Missile Launching System (10)    Missile Size 6    Rate of Fire 45
Mk 3 Anti-Missile Launching System (6)    Missile Size 1    Rate of Fire 10

RGM-2A Harpoon (60)  Speed: 22,000 km/s   End: 22.7m    Range: 30m km   WH: 9    Size: 6    TH: 154 / 92 / 46

TF/SPD-12 Missile Detection Sensor (1)     GPS 84     Range 9.2m km    Resolution 1
TF/SPS-6 Active Search Sensor (1)     GPS 6720     Range 82.6m km    Resolution 80
TF/SQR-11 Thermal Sensor (1)     Sensitivity 44     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  44m km
TF/SDN-10 Communication Array (1)     Sensitivity 11     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  11m km

Missile to hit chances are vs targets moving at 3000 km/s, 5000 km/s and 10,000 km/s

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Comments? Ideas? Criticisms? Am I on the right track for what I want? Where have I erred?

You don't have enough armor for a main combatant.  I would recommend making a more specialized design by removing all of the point defense stuff (launchers, fire control, active sensors).  Keep the magazines however as you need them for your offensive loadout.  Use the saved space for more armor.  At this tech level it is really hard to make multipurpose ships without them being truly huge monsters.  Design another ship as you escort with the active missile defenses built into it.  Also I would design a complimentary ship with dual purpose lasers in turrets to help with final point defense fire and give you some beam weapons in your fleet as well.  At your tech level 15cm lasers will probably work fairly well and give you some decent beam range also.

Actually that's isn't a bad starting generalist.  It's not what I would do, but I would actually like to see how it fairs in combat.

How it differ's from my concepts:
  • The main missile volume is low.  6 salvos is very much on the light side.  My preference is at least 15 salvos and more are better.
Size 6 missiles are larger than I'd take for this weight class because of the impact on both number of salvos and reload cycle.[/li]
[li]I tend to not but passives on my battleline.[/li]
[li]You have more AMM fire controls than I'd use.  My preference is 1MFC to 5 launchers for battleline ships and 1:10 or 15 for dedicated escorts[/li]
[li]41 salvos for AMM is lighter than I like but isn't bad when considered as 1 or many in a task group.[/li]
[li]Your have a different range ratio between missiles and MFC's than I use.  yours handle  a heavy ECM environment better than mine.[/li]
[li]A lack of a damage control module will be telling if you need to affect repairs.[/li]
[/list]

There are other things I'd do different, but all of them have to do with my preferences.  As I said above, I'd like to see how this performs for you in combat.
