Transferring items of tech to another Empire?

I know how to transfer knowledge and ships to another player empire. But is there an easy way of transferring an tech item, such as a sensor ready to install to another player empire. I seem to recall it was possible but cannot for the life of me work out how to do it. I guess I could load it aboard a freighter transfer that ship, unload it and then transfer it back. Anyone know of a better way?

On the main game screen, under the Spacemaster tab, and on the SM Tech Compare screen just check the box next to "Include Race designed Tech Systems".  That will bring up everything researched by those empires that have been individually created in the create research project screen.
