Ship Name Sets
« on: October 21, 2012, 05:50:00 PM »
Edit:
I've done almost all of the lists of names I want to do.  Does anyone have any suggestions for more lists?
I ask that suggestions be kept to real-world navies, where there are distinct names (not lists of numbers, e.g. U-boats) and the data is reasonably available.  Modern navies are preferred, but I might go back past the 1880s on request.  I will compile lists of specific types of names that have been used for ships, even if not all of the names of a given type have been used.  US counties (LST names) is an example of this.

I'm going to start making new ship name lists, and I'll post them here as I do so.  To use, download and add them as directed by Aurora.
The first is US Destroyer Escorts/Frigates (DEs).
The second is Modern US Amphibious Warfare Vessels (Post-WWII).
The third is US Navy Transports (including AK-, T-AK-, AP-, T-AP-, APA-, and AKA- types).
The last one is various US Navy Auxiliaries (Ammunition ships, tankers, tugs, etc.)  Type is designated in the file itself.  (I don't want to add a huge number of different files, so I combine types when it makes sense to do so.  If you desire to have the separately, breaking them out should be easy. Sadly, Aurora scrambles some of the list on import.  Steve, is there a way to fix that?)
See next post for more names (due to forum restrictions).

Here are a revised list of US Destroyers, and US Missile Ships.
The destroyer list contains all vessels that were classified as DD-xxx or DL-xx as built.  This remedied the absence of the Spruance class and the Norfolk and Mitscher class DLs.
The missile ship list includes anything designated DDG-xxx, DLG-xxx, or CG-xx as built.  This includes the Burkes (list was out of date), various DLGs, and Long Beach.
Added on the 23rd:
I've made a list of RN battleships and battlecrusiers, per-dreadnought to Vanguard.
I've also added a list of famous US ships and battles.  These names were originally assigned to carriers, and now are split between the missile cruisers and the big amphibs.

Even more name sets!
The first is a list of most of the cities that gave their names to US warships, including patrol vessels.  I've ordered it as Cruisers, Submarines, Amphibs, Patrol Craft, LCS, though Aurora will scramble it some.  Any one with duplicates will only be in the highest category.
The second is a list of the "41 for Freedom" Submarines, which can be thought of as "Great Americans".  I use quotes because several weren't Americans, and Will Rogers hardly qualifies as great (in the way we normally talk of Great Americans.)
The third file is a composite list of all names in the destroyer series.  This includes regular DDs, DDGs, DLGs, DEs, and FFGs.  Basically, anything named after a naval hero.  When you load this one, it will throw errors.  I'm not quite sure why, but it says that syntax operators are missing.  This does load all the names, as confirmed by the DB.
Added on the 26th:
I worked up a list of all RN fleet carriers, either built or ordered.
On the 3rd:
I revised the lists of USN heroes (adding Nimitz, who fits with the theme) and the 41 for Freedom list (adding the presidents who've gotten carriers).

I'll look into that.  The problem is that my method works better on certain types of lists.  The Wikipedia list of US Destroyers was far easier to clean up than the one for cruisers.  Russian lists are either difficult or nonexistant.

I found a relatively decent source, and have added a list of the post-war Russian destroyers named after virtues.
I've also added a list of post-war cruisers (including the Kirov-class).
Some renamings and such might not be taken into account.
On the 26th:
I've updated the Destroyers file, adding in the Kirivak-class frigates (which had virtue names).
On the 2nd:
I've added all of the DDs back through about WWII, including the ones named after Admirals.
I also added a list of Russians Battleships.

I've worked up three sets of RN destroyer names.  The first, labeled as RNDestroyers, is all of the destroyer names through the Daring-class of 1949, excluding the River, Hunt, and Tribal classes (the Tribals are already in, and the Rivers will be listed separately, as will the newer, themed destroyers).
The second, RNClassicDDs, goes from Ambuscade (beginning of interwar standards) through Daring, excluding any themed classes (Tribal, Hunt, Weapon, etc).  This is a more manageable list (the total list runs to 704 names, this one to 234).
The third list is the various Hunt-classes.  This is one class of destroyers and two of minesweepers, all named on the same scheme.
The last list is just a list of the 88 constellations.

More names from the RN.
First, various bodies of water (Rivers, Locs, and Bays).
Second, cruisers of all types.
Third, Flower-class names.
Added on the 2nd:
Added a list of RN ships named after towns.

Many thanks, the current "USSR" naming type for ships is consists nothing more than literal russian names that go from A to Z. These files will come in handy.

I've put together lists of Japanese battleships, carriers, cruisers, and destroyers.  There is some overlap, particularly because the Japanese have named lots of postwar destroyers after WWII ships.  Also, none of the merchant ship (Maru) carriers were added to the list.

The French, German, and Italian navies will get a similar treatment at some point.  Past that, I'm not sure what I'm going to do.  Suggestions?

I've done the basic ships for the French navy.  Only three lists this time, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers.  I folded carriers in with battleships because there weren't enough to make a separate list.
The cruiser and destroyer files will throw errors when you load them, but they actually load just fine.

And exactly how should I install these files? I did not found any instructions. I suppose these files are meant to be installed somewhere and when I want to design a ship they'll show up on the DAC/Rank/Info tab. Or should I just open the txt and pick a name of my liking?   :)
If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.

If fire fighters fight fire and crime fighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight?

Drop the file you want in the Aurora instal directory, name it ShipNames.  When you open up a game, under the tab labeled Game, there is an option to "Add Ship Names".  (This is on the menu that opens up when you first select the game you want.)  Select it, and follow the instruction.  You can of course open up the .txt and type in a name if you so choose.

See next post for more names (due to forum restrictions).

I've added all these. Try to avoid names with apostrophes as the import routine will strip them out. SQL doesn't deal very well with apostophes.
