UNE Military, 2112
« on: July 21, 2007, 06:00:43 PM »
The UNE Military
The UNE military is descended from the great military organizations of the western world.  The UNE Marine Corps can claim the US Marine Corps and the Royal Marines as its direct ancestors, while the nascent UNE Navy draws its personnel and traditions from the various member nation navies, many of which have a long and glorious history.  The UNE has taken great pains to preserve these traditions where possible, but has also ensured that these organizations have been brought into the twenty-second century by overhauling their traditions and organization so that they are reflective of modern, enlightened management and leadership traditions.  Under the auspices of the UNE government, the repressive regimes that led the old military organizations have been replaced and the military has been reformed from top to bottom.  Carefully trained managers who understand the importance of sexual equality, racial equity, and the potential for a positive life-experience are in place and will ensure that the ideals that form the core beliefs of the UNE will be expressed in the military arm of the government.

The UNE has the following ranks:
Junior Manager
Manager
Junior Group Manager
Group Manager
Squadron Manager
Fleet Manager
Senior Executive

The UNE Self Defense Force maintains twenty five combat divisions, as follows: 4xArmored, 2xAssault, 2xHQ, 17x Infantry

Whoa.  Serious difference in ship speeds.

I do like how you have described both governments from the perspectives of their advocates.  Of course, you make your preferences clear with such digs as the generalist "Clinton" class.  Named after President Chelsea, no doubt  ;)

It sucks to be on the sharp end of a tech difference, especially in Aurora in terms of speed.  The UNE can't really build missiles as fast or as long ranged as the Republic, and they are going to have a hard time building ships as fast as the Republic's as well.  They can build a lot of ships, compared to the Republic, though, and sometimes quantity wins over quality.

Unfortunately, nothing is simple and, even worse, almost all political discourse in the US these days is reduced to the simplest and most common denominator.  It is easier and more emotionally satisfying to say that President A is evil, or the tool of evil corporations, than to say that she/he made a mistake.  Or that Senator B is a communist that wants to put our kids in state run indoctrination centers rather than just saying that he/she really wants what is best but we disagree.

I am going to try to steer clear of real world political debate, as everyone just gets mad.  We'll see where things go.
