Military Vs Commercial Jump Drives
« on: February 16, 2016, 09:51:42 AM »
Although the in-game tool-tip says that military jump drives are required for military ships and Commercial Jump Drives are required for Commercial ships, I recall seeing a post saying that:
1) A military Jump Drive could be mounted on a Commercial ship without making it a military ship.
2) A Military Jump drive will allow commercial ships to pass through their gate provided that the size is small enough.

Are either (or both) of those correct?
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe

1.) yes

if you ever have doubts about this you can check the 'commercial components only' checkbox in the ship designer.

2.) yes

more typically though i mount commercial jump drives on military ships (like gravsurvey ships or big carriers).

There is a bit of confusion about Commercial vs Military jump drives (changes, outdated in game description and mixed reports), but I believe that nuance is covered at the bottom of this page.

* Ships with military engines can only be escorted by a ship with a military jump drive.
* Ships with commercial engines can be escorted by ships with either military or commercial jump drives.
* The maximum size of ship that can be escorted through has to be less than the jump ship and the jump drive rating. For example, if you have a 28 000 tons jump ship, you will only be able to open a wormhole for ships of 28 000 tons or less, regardless of your jump drive efficiency.

I also seen it said by the user slojan whose username I can never spell right :(
