The Void War
« on: October 19, 2015, 05:05:22 PM »
Just read a book called the Void War - first in a new series. Enjoyable read! Unusual mechanics of interstellar travel made it interesting as well.

Read the first book and also enjoyed it. Went on to read the second and unfortunately it all fell down from me there. He seems to have tried to make it space opera in scale but sticking to having just one ship doing everything that was getting increasingly preposterous to me. Shame as the initial one was reasonable.

Due to this thread, I got the first book. It's not terrible though the way the author romanticises British nobility is really preposterous, but it's a fairly small detail. The FTL mechanics are definitely fresh and quite interesting. The main character goes through actual growth and development, which is good because early on he's quite a jackass. It was quite amusing to read the battle descriptions where these big, dangerous ships fire a handful of missiles at each other, when our Aurora missile salvos are easily hundreds and hundreds strong.

That bit about the second book sounds annoying chrislocke2000 but not surprising. The first book already had some warning signs of going space opera full ham style.

I think I read the second book and then gave up quickly into the third.

I decided to give this series another chance. I have read all of the currently released books up to this point and forced myself passed the hard to read dialogue and internal monologue. The premise is reasonable and the author sticks to his tech-bible very well, the writing does improve slightly with each new book and I found myself enjoying it.

I have read all the books and book 2 was definetly the weakest. Not the best military sci-fi but far from the worst

Too bad it is not translated into French.
It would have made an interesting second reading after Honor Harrington.

Probably gonna be edited by L'atalante in 10 years, like all SF...

You can now get the complete series when I bought it as an e-book, it was £0.99 the set.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Void-Wraith-Saga-Military-ebook/dp/B07R7JGPJ2/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=void+war+fox&qid=1594472865&s=digital-text&sr=1-5

Try  Sci-Fi Bridge for cheap books from lots of new Authors. Some are even quite good. Caveat Emptor!

Another to try is Shelf Space Sci-fi. Once again Caveat Emptor, there are some real turkeys!
