FARS (Pretoria)

FARS news agency has reported that after the recent National Front electrical victory the Free State Alliance ruling council has been announced.

Adele Van Resburg of Johannesburg will serve as Prime Minister.  The daughter of Free State Alliance founder Emil Van Resburg and a graduate of the prestigious Durban Academy, she won on a campaign to integrate the FSA into a more solid whole, and had support from South Africa, Rhodesia-Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Iran, and the African Mandate territories.    The charismatic 21-year old administrator gained inroads in the young demographics of the FSA member states.

"We must strive, in this time of great change, to work towards peaceful co-existence with the empires of Russia and the North American Union, to work with those who tried to starve us out by sanctions and spreading war across the Mandate Territories.   I wish to work with those nations to explore and expand our economies and enrich our common race.   We who lead, our burden is to also make sure that all of humanity is uplifted by the new wonders of science.   We view them as partners, to speak of a new outer space treaty, and to allow all the people of earth to the promised land of prosperity."

Rear Admiral Jolene Hertzog of Windhoek, South West Africa has been confirmed as head of the VSV (Vrystaat Vloot/Free State Navy).   Currently the keepers of the Free State Alliance nuclear weapon assets, in addition, the FSA has completed two large construction platforms to carry out its new goal of both orbital and void forces.

General Gerhard Roos of Durban has been confirmed as head of the VSW (Vrystaat Weermag) the land forces component of the Free State Alliance.

Wimpie "Don't call wimpy" Du Preez has been announced as foreign minister.  He stated he looked forward to working to bring peace with the NAU and Russian Confederation.

As per policy, the head of the FSIS (Free State Intelligence Service), the Industrial and Quota Board, and the Free State Research Council will be unnamed at this time.

in accordance with Resburg's election promise, Persian and Zulu cadets will be commissioned as part of the Free State Alliance officer corps.   Joining the Afrikaans- English- and German- speaking cadets already enrolled.

Guardian-Mirror (London)  - The extreme right wing National Front government of the Free State Alliance won a major victory in last week's elections.   Adele Van Resburg, daughter of long time FSA strongman Emil Van Resburg, won a resounding victory over the disjointed "Freedom Party Lists".   Still ruling from her father's anti-corruption and "guided self rule" platform, the young blonde Adele Van Resburg looks to continue the National Front policies of expansion, limited suffrage,  and state-managed co-ops.    There were no major surprises in the announcements of the other members of the ruling council, Rear Admiral Jolene Hertzog, famously called "The Red Devil of Windhoek" for her role in the 2097 Réunion Island crisis was confirmed as the head of the VSV and General Gerhard Roos was confirmed as head of the VSW.  The Van Den Berge twins are thought to have been appointed as overseers of the economic program for the Free State Alliance as it attempts to consolidate Iran and the greater Mandate Territories into its economic reach.

The Freedom Party Lists, a collection of parties opposed to the National Front policies, collected 34% of the vote.

Botswana - Wimpie Du Preez, Foreign Minister of the Free State Alliance, was asked today if Trans-Newtonian technology made peace more or less likely.  He made the following official statement.   "Our societies have always faced technological change,  from the invention of steel to the worlds of information at our fingertips.  Steel can be made into a plow that plants corn for decades, or a rifle that defends or attacks that same homestead.   The choice of peace is in every person's heart.   Today, everyone on this planet sits on a three legged stool, The Russian Confederation, The North American Union, and the Free State Alliance make those legs.  My grandfather was a farmer, and he said "I pray for rain, plow my land, and have my gun ready."   I became a politician instead of a farmer, much to his disappointment, and I say "I pray for peace, build a better future for our state, and have my gun ready.""

After visiting the Governor-General, Du Preez will visit President Johnathan Mkapa of Tanzania and Prime Minister Rudi Bakhtiar of Iran.  They will be discussing the integration of those nations  into the greater Free State Alliance economy and domestic investments into the newly discovered Trans-Newtonian technology.

Note: All teams are welcome to post fluff or other role-playing here.

AP - Philadelphia

A new Constitution was ratified today by the Congress of the North American Union. "A new Republic needs a new way of running" said Congressman von Sheb, one of the Constitution's main drafter. "I'm confident the Constitution will provide us with a simple and efficient way to run this country for all American's benefits. We hope that the rest of the world will learn lessons from our experience in democracy and communal decision-making. God Bless North America!"
With the ratification of the Constitution, elections for the new presidency will take place in the next few weeks. Congressmen von Sheb, Red Dot and Panopticon are said to be considering bids for the presidency.

"Congressman von Sheb announced today he was halting his campaign and endorsing Congressman Point-Rouge for President. von Sheb declined to comment when asked about the state of his campaign's finances, instead saying his decision was due to Point-Rouge strong character and the need for a steady hand at the NAU's helm. Rumours of financial troubles have plagued the von Sheb campaign following its failures to get any significant endorsement over the last couple of month.

With the endorsement of von Sheb's delegates, victory is all but assured for Congressman Point-Rouge, who is expected to give his inaugural speech as President Point-Rouge in the next few days.

Excerpt for the White House Press Office, 1 Jan 2100

State of the North American Union Address, 1 January 2100, by President Guillaume Point-Rouge.

"My fellow North Americans, mes compatriotes nord-américains, mis compañeros norteamericanos, I would like to begin my first State of the North American Union Address by thanking my fellow Congressmen who have chosen me to replace President Joseph Henry.

The beginning of the 22nd Century sees the Union in a very good position.  The discovery of the Trans-Newtonian elements has the potential to further enhance the opportunities offered to all the Union citizens. On the economic side, the new elements will further enhance our additive manufacturing capabilities ensuring that the transformation begun in the mid-21st Century will continue unabated. This Transformation will not be without challenges.  Some jobs may be lost to the changes, but it will be the role of this Administration to ensure that programmes are put in place to re-train those who wish to do so.  The enhanced space and the future colonisation programmes will offer opportunities for those wishing to take up these new jobs in space.  As with the conquest of the West, the new Frontier will be in space and the Union will be looking for many brave men and women to push those frontiers out.

All of these changes of course need secure funding.  In this regard, I will work with Congress to ensure a stable North American dollar as well as a prudent budget planning envelope to secure our priorities of transforming our economy and developing space.

Internationally, the Union also faces many challenges. Both the Russian and the Free State Alliance are developing as competitors on Earth and in space.  Their ideologies are definitely not about freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as ours is.  We must remain the beacon of freedom for those nation-states still in limbo with respect to the discovery of the Trans-Newtonian elements and its impact on their way-of-life.  This Administration will work with all non-aligned countries to ensure that their ability to choose a side is not impacted by any outside influence.

There are many opportunities for the Union to collaborate with both the Russians and the FSA.  Collaboration enhances common understanding and can but reduce frictions and possible clashes.  Let there be no mistake that the Union does not seek confrontation with Russia and the FSA but would much rather develop a modus vivendi with both Russia and the FSA to ensure that the exploration and exploitation of the Solar System is done peacefully and for the benefit of the whole human race.

Collaboration, cooperation, harmony are great peaceful aims but one must also remain prudent.  It is therefore our intention to develop the right amount of Earth-based and space-based armed forces to ensure the protection of the Union and its citizens. We want a peaceful expansion of the human race into space but we will remain vigilant should any of potential foes decide that force would be a shortcut for them. Our citizens expect no less of us.

So the challenge I wish to present tonight is that as citizens of the Union, we must rise to the challenges of the 22nd Century.  We must work together to keep this Union strong and free and take the place in the Solar System that is rightfully ours.

Thank you and good night.”

Good Morning.  My name is Nathan Aghdashloo, Director of Spaceflight, Free State Space Administration.  I am here to announce that the Free State Alliance, in partnership with all the governments that make up the Free State Alliance, our partners among the non-aligned powers, and our dear leader Adele Van Resburg and all the members of the ruling council wish to make one of the most important announcements in humankind.

Today, we launch the VSS Fajr (meaning "Dawn" in Farsi).  For too many years humanity has been stuck in the earth.  Over 100 years ago, mankind landed on the moon.   We have not returned.   However today we will.   The VSS Fajr is a non-military ship, however military personnel will be  crewmen and women on board this ship.   In addition to the men and women of the Free State Alliance military, we will though the Inter-space program be inviting five Ruimtevaarder (Astronauts/Cosmonauts) from non-aligned powers.  Two will be from Syria, and one from Italy, Egypt, and Singapore.

The First expedition of the VSS Fajr will be to land on the Moon, take some samples and place a plaque on earth's companion.  Then, after placing the Free State Alliance flag on the moon, it will boldly go were no man or women has gone before.   The VSS Fajr will be traveling to Mars, and place on the red planet five ruimtevaarder who will make a full time settlement on Mars.   We are deeply excited about this opportunity.  Commander Annelle Trichardt will command the VSS Fajr on it first mission.

We wished to make this public so that the Non-aligned powers and the powers of the Russian Confederation and North American Union know we do this in peace.  In addition, the Ruling Council has asked to to take this chance to offer easy licencing terms to the Fouché-Delport engine that will guide this ship to the brave frontiers of space.

First Visit by NAU President to the UK

For his first visit as the newly selected President of the North American Union, President Guillaume Point-Rouge was in London today to meet with several high-ranking officials.  He first met the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street where Point-Rouge and the PM were said to have had very frank discussions about the challenges posed by the discovery of the Trans-Newtonian elements.  Upon leaving the residence of the PM, President Point-Rouge confirmed that the main aim of his visit was not only to get to know the personalities but also to seek out opportunities for joint collaboration with the UK government in many areas including research for TN technologies, specifically those with application for space exploration and industrial capacity.   Point-Rouge said: " The NAU and the UK have been friends for a long time. There is no reasons why the discovery of the Trans-Newtonian elements should change this for the worse.  Space is vast and there are opportunities for all of the nations of Earth to join us in its exploration."

The next agenda item for the President was a speech at Parliament in a joint session of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. There, Point-Rouge reiterated his invitation for all the free nations of Earth to join the NAU in the fortunes offered by the TNs.  "The UK would be a valued addition to our Union" said Point-Rouge.

The final event in Point-Rouge's visit is a State Dinner tonight with His Majesty King George X at Buckingham Palace.  Our sources indicate that the menu will include blood pudding soufflé, wild venison curry, and fried Mars bar à la mode.

Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
With the recent activity of conventional Russian space launches the old launch site at Baikonur in Kazakhstan is once again seeing action like it did in it's prime decades ago before the construction of the cosmodrome at Vostochny. With the Russian and Kazakh state owning 50% each of the Baikonur cosmodrome through the Baiterek joint venture since 2004 Kazakhstan has so far been able to play a part in international space operations through their space agency KazCosmos. But this will not last much longer with the Soyuz series finally going completely out of commission in the near future. The future is transnewtonian.

This is also what colonel Ilya Vonranov is telling his Kazakh counterpart in their current meeting: "Borat, maybe you will find yourself without a job already within the next year or so. This would be a shame since we have such a good cooperation and achieved so much over the years. Our countries already have a close cooperation. You should talk to your people before the current joint venture ends, see if they are interested in being part of the future. This could be an opportunity, not only for you but for all of Kazakhstan."

Barentsburg, Svalbard.
Aleksandr Kalinin took the chance to to go for a walk in the frisk arctic ocean wind. His submarine was here to restock in what could be his last mission as it's captain. It was a military vessel and thus not formally allowed to anchor here at Svalbard. But it was currently on a scientific mission surveying the arctic ocean bottom under the north pole and Russia had research stations here since the 1960's. This was at least the official excuse. That it was a thin and transparent one didn't much matter. Walking around in uniform would surely upset a few Norwegians, but who cared, that alone was worth the cold. In the past Norway may have protested against his presence, but these days Russian military came and went here as they wished. Norway may be a NATO member, but NATO these days was a joke without the US and everyone knew it. This might be Aleksandr's last time here. He hoped it was so. The navy would soon need a lot of personnel - not for wet assignments this time, and he was in the retraining program.

Natalie Greenwood, White House spokesperson, confirmed today at the White House's weekly media Q&A that President Point-Rouge had recently authorised the unilateral disarmament of one its ICBM bases in South Dakota.  Greenwood confirmed that once the Department of Union Defence (DUD) had removed the ICBMs from the silos that ownership of the base would be transferred to the NAU Space Exploration Agency (SEA).  The base will be used as the launch pad for a new series of space exploration drones - the Hathor Mk 1.  Greenwood also mentioned that the Hathor is named for the Egyptian patron goddess of miners. The specific task of the Hathor drones will be to confirm the presence of Trans-Newtonian elements elsewhere in the solar system.  Greenwood confirmed that the Hathor programme had been funded for 12 drones that were to be launched in the next few weeks ands over a period of a few months. Finally, Greenwood highlighted that the dismantling of the ICBMs and the installation of the Hathors would be observed by UN personnel as well as by many of the foreign attachés present in Washington. "We especially do not want any panic when the first Hathor launches" she said.

-and I for one don't believe a word of it when the governments talk about "peaceful exploration", we don't really know what the so-called Hathor Mk 1 drone actually carries but I bet you anything it isn't survey instruments, what survey ship was ever launched from and ICBM silo anyway? Mark my words, this is all a distraction, a, a cover for the administration's cowardly refusal to challenge Russia on the deaths of American citizens in their country, they are hoping the public will take the distraction, watch the circus, and forget those men and women who died on foreign soil. All because they are scared of angering the Russians!

I know why people, and I'll tell you, the FSA has been influencing our leaders at the highest level, the UN is basically nothing, but someone always thinks it's a good idea, believe you me, our ties with the FSA will keep leading to decisions that undermine our sovereignty and eventually lead to are capitulation to a one world government lead by the FSA! Mark my words, the same thing they are doing to us they are doing to Russia to, just no one knows about it, it's happening, and you sheep are letting it!

Snap elections called for in the FSA!

In what was supposed to be a formality of announcing senators for life, became the announcement of snap elections in the FSA.  Senators for life were announced as John Swart, Emily Smith, and Tom Malherbe (National Front), Nelson Bophela (Peace Now), and Kelli Van Camp (Liberal Party).  Before the announcement, it was announced that the Iranian National Front Party was joining with the Lebanon based Amal Party under the banner of Amal.    Adele Van Resburg after announcing the new senators, discussed the party split, and announced that new snap elections were to be held on March 1st, 2101.

It is expected that the National Front, and the pro business Liberal party will do well, with the ANC and hard right Volksparty facing a uphill fight.   The ANC and Peace Now, with their shared left wing are in talks to merge.

With the defections from the National front, and appointments to the senate, the current makeup of the houses are follows.

Lower house

National Front (51.5%) - 103 seats
Peace Now (12.5%) - 25 seats
Amal (11.5 %) - 23 seats
Liberal party (10%) - 20 seats
Volksparty (8%) - 16 seats
ANC (6.5%) - 13 seats

Senate
Non-partisan 20 (71.4%)
National Front - 6 (21.42%)
Peace Now - 1 (3.57%)
Liberal Party - 1 (3.57%)

(Goodwill code (Volksparty - 16, ANC - 13, Peace Now - 5,  National Front - 4,  Amal - 4) )

From "The Eye" hosted by Panopticon

The Russians are reverting to their roots at last, attempting to block anyone else form claiming territory in space by saying "it belongs to all mankind" or some bull like that, you know what I think listeners? Of course you don't! You are all idiots, but I will tell you anyway, I think the Russki's never really escaped communism, that's right, you heard me.  It's been simmering there behind the scenes since World War Two! It's why they never really got good at anything except crushing the weaker, but richer neighbors and "redistributing" their wealth! They don't change! And now they want to convince us to agree to share what we find with them? What's next? Will they demand the nations of the world send them their wealth to so it can be equally divided!  I tell you people, the FSA is a bunch of godless heathens, but they had the right idea for once suggesting we agree to claiming those rocks in space. Sure as hell are better than the damn socialists in Russia!
And mark my words people, the administration here is filled with just enough pansies that they might actually accept it? It sickens me as it should sicken you!

Caller, you're in the Eye, do you think we should tell the Russians to go to hell, or are you a spineless lackey of the commies?

FSA parties - and what do they stand for.

National Front - The National front has lead the FSA from creation, now lead by Adele Van Rensberg.

Foreign relations: A balance between the FSA, NAU, and Russia
Space: Heavy exploration focus with colony development
Officer training: Afrikaners and English, small number of Iranians
Private business: Pro private business, with government subsidies
Industry: Focus on domestic production with exploration and colony development.
Military:  Speak softly and carry a big stick, with a traditional view of "A book in one hand, a rifle in another."

Peace Now - The main left wing opposition party.   Lead by Jamal Amora

Foreign relations: The FSA is really a non-aligned power, and should act that way
Space: colony development should be used to find more land for the poor
Officer training: Open to all
Private business: Cargo and colonies should be state run
industry: if transnewtonian tech does not reach the people, why should it be used?

BBC radio is reporting at the FSA PM question time, there was a announcement that the Fajr project has met FSA build goals, and the option to build up to two more craft of the class will not be exercised.   The VSS Fajr is currently placing itself to intercept Earth vie Mercury, and the Tanzania is continuing to Saturn.   After a rest and refit, the Fajr will return to service as a courier craft.

Caller, you're in the Eye, do you think we should tell the Russians to go to hell, or are you a spineless lackey of the commies?

Panopticon is not noted for his historical accuracy or nuanced grasp of current events.

Hello, this is Creig from Huston.  Yes the Russians should go to hell, so should those FSA folks.   Can't trust anyone who not from the NAU.   The Russians are just afraid since the FSA is launching ships, and we are launching probes all the time to explore, that they won't have anything to claim,  since they are just doing nothing but oppress their own people.   Also, I want to say something -- Everyone doubted me when I said I was picked up by aliens and they experimented on me.   and now the FSA says there are alien ruins.  I think they are secretly making deals with the aliens for crazy technology and they are saying it ruins so no one thinks there is real martians.

Creig you seem like an intelligent guy but, wait no, no you don't, you sound like you are off your meds Creig. I am glad you see my point in not trusting the other major groups and you are right that the Russkis are running scared at the moment, but Creig, there are no aliens, hell I don't even believe there are actually ruins on Mars! We only have the FSA's word for it and I don't see why we should trust that at all. My guess? It's a set up for the future, I bet our government is going to start a joint program up there doing cutting edge research and experimentation where no one else can see, and mark my words, the FSA will end up getting the better of the deal, our negotiators seem intent on giving away NAU sovereignty and aren't even trying to hide it! Crieg we don't need aliens to screw us, our government is planning to do it themselves, Creig find help, you are a madman but I thank you for your call.

Address to the Union, 14 February 2101.

"My fellow North Americans, mes compatriotes nord-américains, mis compañeros norteamericanos, today is an excellent day for the Union.  With the advent of the Trans-Newtonian Elements, our scientists and engineers have designed us a way to get rid of the nuclear threat once and for all.

The Department of Union Defense has just fielded a new weapon system called the Peacekeeper Continental Defense Center which will act as a better system than our old anti-ballistic missile systems from the 20th and 21st Century.  The Center is equipped would a new weapon system – the meson cannon – which will ensure that the Union is never harmed by the older generation of ballistic missiles.

We know that the Free State Alliance and the Union can reach an agreement to completely disarm our current stocks of nuclear weapons.  However, our analysis of the Russian Confederation highlights that they will most probably not agree to complete disarmament.  We are going to need to use a much stronger strategy to get them to remove their nukes.  As of 1230 hours today, our Ambassador to the UN and VP – Jonathan von Sheb – is delivering a very strong ultimatum to the Russians. They have 24 hours to evacuate and self-destruct their ICBM bases.  This is an unprecedented measure but the threat of nuclear holocaust warrants such stern measures.

In order to ensure that the Union is never again threatened by the Russian Confederation we will station observers in all Russian shipyard to prevent rearming and striking back at us. Finally, I have ordered the Union Armed Forces at DEFCON 2 just in case the Russians would try and test our resolve.

Ladies and gentlemen, today is a momentous event. It marks the day the Union is finally about to be free from the threat of conventional intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Thank you for your attention and good day.”

The Free State Alliance has announced that it plans to launch three (3) De Beer class Scout probes from the Kenya launch complex, the first of 15 such launches.
Launches will happen within the next 24 hours*.  Originally they were to be launched in groups of 4, however due to the current events it was decided that the first three launches should take place immediately.  This is a public announcement - staff from the NAU and Russia are welcome to witness the launch.

New York Times Exclusive - 15 February 2101

A look at our new line of defense against ICBMs

The NY Times has been granted limited access to the NAU's newest weapon in its arsenal - the Peacekeeper Continental Defense System. Located in remote mountain site in Alaska and protected by heavily armed troops, the first of the Peacekeeper came online at 06:04 AM yesterday.  The system is the cornerstone of a much more aggressive disarmament policy by the Point-Rouge Administration.  The system itself has allowed the NAU to send the following ultimatum to the Russian Confederation: Disarm or face the destruction of your ICBM bases.  This unprecedented action by a supranational government has shocked the world's diplomatic circles. Even now, negotiations are underway at the UN in Geneva to try and settle the confrontation witout bloodshed.

With this diplomatic backdrop, a visit of the Peacekeeper was approved by the DUD and our reporter has visited the Peacekeeper site.  Here is what he reported:

"I am currently in a secret remote location in Alaska and I have to say that I am quite amazed by the security surrounding this installation.  Heavily armed Special Forces soldiers manned the various checkpoints. I have seen ground to air missile systems as well multiple camouflaged bunkers.  The Peacekeeper system itself is much less conspicuous. As a matter of fact, it looks somewhat like an old telescope design.  My escort - LTC Faerly Rowbust - tells me that the system is armed with 10 of the Air Force designed Meson Cannon with redundant fire controls and sensor suite. I am also told that the Peacekeeper functioned extremely well in all simulations and that it reached a near 100% accuracy against the current generation of ICBMs. In effect, this system provides the protection that were unachievable  with the old "Strategic Defense Initiative" of the 20th Century or the 21st Century's "Ballistic Missile Defense." This is William Beaufort reporting from Alaska."

At this stage, it is too early to tell how this crisis will unfold. One thing is certain, the world will not be the same with the Trans-Newtonian Elements and trying to hold on to the status quo may be untenable.

The FSA released a media guide for the ICBM+, also known as the Ratel (Honey badger) missile.   Using Trans Newtonian technology, it is one of the most fearsome weapons the FSA has fielded, using existing ICBM bases, it as some put it "Hits before even advanced sensors know it is coming"

the FSA confirmed that it fields such weapons, but is mum on how many are in operation.

The "Peacekeeper Crisis" ending is expected to have the following impacts on the FSA election.

National Front - Bonus, depending if NAU ties are damaged
Peace Now - took a major hit, as it did not play into their hands
Amal - campaign shift to move closer to the NAU.
Liberal party - Minor hit
Volksparty - Major poll gains
ANC - campaign shift to move closer to Russia

Polls

National Front 45%
Amal 12%
Volksparty 12%
Peace Now 8%
Liberal party 8%
ANC 5%
Undecided 10%

Votes are on March 1st.   If the National Front is unable to obtain 50% of the seats, they will have to form a coalition government, and will result in a reshuflling.   The National Front logical partners are Amal to form a center-Right coalition, or Volksparty to form a Right wing government.    The Green Party hopes to gain 2% and seats.

Vice-President Jonathan von Sheb indicted over the Peacekeeper crisis

An all-night emergency session of the North American Congress on the Peacekeeper crisis ended in the impeachment of vice-president Jonathan von Sheb. von Sheb was the main architect of Plan Dark Letter, the ultimatum to Russia we brought the world to the brink of disaster. Calls to the vice-president's office where rerouted to the office of Attorney General Robert Derbenny, who confirmed the Justice Department is currently investigation whether there is a case for charges of treasons to be brought up, and that von Sheb was currently in detention pending a decision.

A press release from von Sheb's councel denounced what he called a "political show trial" to "scapegoat the Vice-President and hide the collective responsability of Congress in approving the Dark Letter plan".

Back in von Sheb's district of Northern Cascadia potential successors are getting ready for a potential by-election. Rep-Conservative Bob O'Donnal denounced the policy of the Institutional Revolutionary Democrats, why Johanna Duvois launched a new attack ad accusing O'Donnal of putting his career ahead of the Union's interest.

President Point-Rouge is set to address Congress later in the day, amidst call for his resignation and rumor of further impeachment proceedings.

Live Broadcast of President Point-Rouge's resignation - 15 February 2101 23:17

"My fellow North Americans, mes compatriotes nord-américains, mis compañeros norteamericanos, the plan I had endorsed in the hope of getting rid of the nuclear threat has backfired. The message of a nuclear-free world was lost in the shoddy execution of Plan DARK LETTER. We are now even more threatened by nuclear weapons with the additional threat from the FSA. I have come to realise that my dream of a world without nuclear weapons was a ‘bridge too far.’

My leadership abilities are now questioned and the fact that I was unable to control the more hawkish elements of my administration means that it is time for me to step down from the Presidency of the North American Union.  I will remain as Congressman since my constituents in the great State of Quebec still have confidence in my abilities as a Congressman but as of today, I am resigning from the Presidency.

I wish my replacement the best of luck and surer hand at the wheel.

Thank you for your attention."

Address to the NAU Congress by Lorenzo Rosso, 16 February 2101 08:00

Congressmen and Congresswomen,

I stand before quite humbled by your confidence in my abilities to clean up the mess left by the previous Administration.  As we used to say in Brooklyn when I was growing up: “You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.” This is exactly my promise to you today. I will take stern measures to restrain the rampant liberalism present in many of our governmental structures. It is time for these institutions of government to realise that Congress runs this nation and not them.

I also promise to curtail our tendency to meddle in the affairs of the world.  The so-called doctrine of ‘Balance-of-Power’ has proven expensive and dangerous. It is time to put North America back at the center of our concerted efforts. I want this nation to become great again. We will do that by focussing our efforts at our own development and the rest of the world can do as they well please. That process will begin by the suspension of all our relations with the Russians and the ‘back-stabbing’ Free Staters.

By working together towards our great goal we can all contribute to make the NAU great again*.

Thank you and good night.

* OOC: In no way does this represent support for the current US Presidential candidate Mr. Donald Trump. It is a good catch phrase though.

Polls have closed across the FSA in the snap election called after many of the MPs of the National Front left to join Amal.

The final results are in.  The national front fell two seats short of a Majority, and must continue as a Minority government or form a coalition.  Logical coalition partners are Amal and Liberal Party, due to long standing issues between the National front and the hard right Volksparty.

National Front  has earned 48% of the vote, earning 96 seats(+2 seats from non-allocated seats). (-5 seats)
The Volksparty earned 18% of the vote, earning 36 seats (+20 seats)

FSA suspends "Project Kruger"

with the announcement of the scrapping of the NAU peacekeeper project, the FSA announced that its planned "Kruger" system has been indefinitely suspended.   The Kruger system was a meson armed defensive system.

FSA spokesman declined to comment on the nature of the "Deep Sand" system that was rolled out by the FSA.

"The FSA firmly believes in Mutual Assured Destruction is the best way to secure peace.   FSA MAD system will consist of two upgraded missiles, the ICMB+, also known as the Ratel MK 1, or "Heavy Iron", and the smaller, less expensive Ratel Mk II.  Both systems will use preexisting ICBM launch systems. The Goal is to replace the entirety of the older ICBM series of missiles.

What's the goodwill code?

Okay, this will be a good time to explain how FSA politics run.  The FSA has a lower house (Volksraad) and a upper house (Senate).   The Volksraad is directly elected by the people, the Senate made of Senators for life.

The Senate consists of 20 non-partisan senators (AKA, what the admin decides what they are) and senators nominated by the party.   Each party earns "Goodwill" by their results in the elections.  when goodwill reaches 20, they get to place a senator in the senate.   Since I had two parties merge, (Really there was not much difference between the ANC and Peace Now) I had to check to make sure their merged amounts didn't reach 20.

Example: The National Front holds 49% of the seats.  Thus they at the end of the year earn 49 points of goodwill.   40 of those points are used to name newly minted senators, and nine is carried over to the next year. While the smallest party, the Liberal Party, controls 6.5 percent, and thus can only appoint a senator every 3 years (and change).

The Senate die off is just me rolling a d100, with each senator assigned a number.   If I roll a blank number, no one passed on, while if  i roll a number they passed on and I roll again. Thus the max is really 99.

From the FSA constitution.
Quote
Upper House (Senate)
Senators are named for life.   There are 20 non-partisan senators, and then at the end of each year new senators are nominated.   For every percent of voting, a party gains one point of "goodwill" at the end of the year.   When a party gains 20 points, they get to use it to name a senator.   (I check twice a year for senators to pass on, thus limiting the senate to 99 members  except for short term overruns.)

FSSA launches fourth De Beer mission

The fourth De Beer probe was launched from the Kenya Space Complex today.   Using TN technology it brings new speed in the exploration of space.

"Its a fun race, our friends over at the NAU have launched five times, and we have launched four times.  These probes are 17 times faster then the Fajr class.   And cheaper too."

In addition, the FSSA (Free State Space administration) gained funding approval for the "David Livingstone" class ships, a pair of TN powered survey vessels.   There is speculation that the Fajr class, who just a few months ago were the pride of any nations void fleet, will be relegated to Earth/Mars or Earth/Luna missions due to their speed.

Editor Note:

World Press News as obtained a FSA Whitepaper detailing some of the Free State Alliance weapon systems and strategy detailing how the FSA plans to maintain MAD.   We are aware some may claim the FSA leaked this to the WPN to give clarity to how the FSA plans to secure itself, as a undisclosed system cannot provide deterrence.  We decided to go ahead and publish sections of this white paper.   Much of the technical details such as speed was redacted in our copy.    Also the FSA announced the Kruger system, mentioned in this white paper, as suspended for political reasons.

Ratel White paper

Or how I stopped worrying and loved Mutual Assured destruction.

The Ratel, known in English as the Honey Badger, is one of the most fearsome creatures of the veld.   Thus it is highly appropriate that the overall weapon system to maintain Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) is named after such beasts.   Traditionally, ICBMs provided such a shield.  However, recent technology such as the Meson weapons have left traditional ICBMs in the dustpan of history.  Thus the FSA must update the concept to make sure that any attack on the FSA itself or its critical interests can be responded in lethal form.

...............

Missiles

The Ratel System consists of two missiles designed by the Missile Bureau of the Free States (MbFS).   To confuse any spies these systems were given more then one name.  However this whitepaper gives the offical designation for each of these missiles.

ICBM+ - designed to take advantage of the large size tubes that the ICBM uses, the ICBM+ is by far the most deadly weapon in the Ratel system.   With enough speed to strike before even advanced sensors can detect it, it carries a large nuclear warhead designed to smash into hardened targets, or completely eliminate large structures such as shipyards.   These weapons are designed to take out key installations as identified by the Free State Intelligence Service (FSIS) on Earth or in LEO.

Ratel Mark II - A smaller, much less expensive missile designed to replace ICBMs as a whole in a expensive manner.  While not carrying as much firepower as the ICBM+, they still travel at Speeds that prevent meson strikes, and provide the bulk of the MAD.   These will be targeted at population centers, military units, and soft targets, or less key installations.

............
Sensors

To accurately target the missiles of the Ratel system, active sensors need to be deployed.   After much research it was decided that many small sensor platforms hardened from nuclear attack will provide the best chance for sensor survival, and in numbers and design to prevent a meson first strike.

......................
Meson cannon

The Kruger system is designed to provide protection of the FSA from traditional ICBMs.   There is some debate on the need for it, as most nations will be going to Post-ICBM systems, and a meson PDC could be viewed as a first strike weapon.   The builders of the Ratel system designed the Kruger system as a addition to the Ratel system, and to provide backup, but is well aware that it may be excluded for political reasons.

Wall Street Journal – 14 March 2101

Washington Bureau - Boeing Bombardier Rocketdyne (BBR: A, 141.75NA$) has received a contract worth 2.4BNA$ from the Department of Union Defense for the production and life support maintenance of the new missile in the NAU’s arsenal – the Carnifex Mk 1 multipurpose missile.  Crash designed following the Peacekeeper Incident, the Carnifex is destined initially to replace the old generation of Minuteman XXII ICBMs in the Union’s silos.  The Carnifex does offer much more range and is rumoured to fly at speeds greater than Mach 5500. Thanks to the application of the Trans-Newtonian technologies, the Carnifex is nonetheless smaller than the Minuteman while providing much better capabilities.   Those capabilities are exactly why the Carnifex is known as a multipurpose missile since it could eventually be used against targets in space, orbital facilities or even facilities on other planetary bodies within its range.

The contract to BBR is for an initial program of 240 units with an option for 80 more.  The work on the Carnifex will be done in the BBR facilities in Huntington Beach (California), Montreal (Quebec) and Canoga Park (California). The program is expected to provide work at those facilities for the next 12-24 months, depending on the exercise of DUD option and whether international sales will be authorised by the NAU’s Congress. This contract is expected to have significant impact on BBR which had been struggling to gain military contracts with the dovish Point-Rouge Administration. The arrival of the Rosso Administration may be a sign that the whole defense sector may be a profitable investment in the medium to long-term. Our WSJ Investment Analysis Team has certainly changed its views on BBR by upgrading the stock to a ‘Buy’ recommendation from the ‘Hold’ it had last time it was reviewed.

From "The Eye"

-ust proves the entire world is against us, at the least the damn commies are honest about it, the FSA has the gall to threaten the world with annihilation over events that don't even affect them? And put us right back to the cold war mentality the Peacemaker system was supposed to prevent! Now everyone is building these new super missiles and there is no practical defense against them! Mark my words people, I had my differences with the previous administration, but they will be recognized as heroes down the line once everyone realizes the FSA's true colors. The FSA has also shown that they are willing to withdraw from the OST, a treaty they pushed for and support, simply because it might be inconvenient for them! Our actions broke no laws and would have led to nuclear disarmament within a year! But I guess world peace isn't good enough for them unless it is under the FSA banner! The problem can only be solved through strength, strength that is totally lacking within our leadership, which is why, loyal listeners, I am proud to announce that I am running for congress in this upcoming special election to fill the spot left open by Congressman Romero, who as you know resigned in the face of a massive corruption, drug, and sex trade scandal. I believe I can do better, I will do better, and I will bring the NAU to the forefront of power and crush all opposition on the way.

I am glad you asked that Joe, well I'll tell you, drugs and sex are pretty alright, but with the laws being the way they are, being involved in those industries is both dangerous and irresponsible, as Congressman Romero, and the world, found out when the police broke down his fortified bunker and found he had been eating his staff. I will work to change the laws to make it easier for all of my constituents to access drugs and sex without getting involved with cannibalism cults. Additionally, there is something better than those things and that is violence! With the new technologies available the world of violence is sure to expand in possibilities like never before, I will work to loosen gun and technology restrictions so that all citizens can have access to these developments without problems, and also encourage military recruitment for those interested in the organized application of force.

FSA launches the VSS David Livingstone

Delegates where on hand as the Vrystaat Vloot (VSV) launched the VSS David Livingstone.   This is the first TN-powered ship to join the void navy (The Fajr Class (VSS Fajr and the VSS Tanzania were conventionally powered vessels).  The David Livingstone is the first in a pair of ships of the class, designed to locate key spaceborn materials for the growing FSA economy.   It can also quickly transport research teams from one planet to the next, and the first mission of the Livingstone will be to drop off another scientific team to the Elysium Mars base....

VSS Fajr returns to a Hero welcome

The VSS Fajr returned to earth to a hero's welcome to the FSA.  Being the first ship to supply men and women to Mars, and explore Luna, Mars, Venus, Mercury  and Jupiter and its many moons, it returned to earth.   The Commander earned a silver star for her long void mission.   The Fajr is expected to stay in earth orbit for the time being, allowing its tired crew to rest and recover.  The sister ship of the Fajr is currently exploring Saturn and its many moons.

De Beer program canceled

The De Beer program has been canceled after 6 launches.  It is viewed as unneeded due to the arrival of the VSS David Livingstone

H-SPAN, Speech by Amadh Al-Shebi, President of the Space Frontier Foundation to Congress

"Honoured Congressmen and Congresswomen,

We of the Union have the blood of pioneers flowing in our veins. Unlike any other nation on Earth, we are the sons and daughters of those that did not accept their fate, those that left behind everything they had in order to contribute to the greatest nations on Earth.

Four scores years ago, my own great-grandfather left his home in war-torn Syria. He had to walk hundred of kilometers across the desert to cross the border, toils for years in the sweatshops of Turkey to get the means to finally leave the Middle-East. Always, he kept his goal in mind: reach the Americas, create a better life for himself and the world. And he succeeded.

Today, it is the spirit of my grandfather than animate me. In cooperation with the North American Space Agency, the Space Frontier Foundation has been training volunteers for settlement of the solar system. Now, after years of hard work, we stand ready. The Komb-class NAS Neil Armstrong, the first ship of its kind, will carry five thousands colonists and their life-support equipment to Mars. Together with my fellow space settlers, we will keep alive the flame of the pioneer spirit, and I urge every man and woman, in the Americas and beyond, who want to make a better life for him or herself to join us.

Honoured Congressmen and Congresswomen, we are not leaving you. America is not a place, it is an idea, an idea of freedom, courage and self-sufficiency. That idea, we take it with us on the distant plains of Mars.

Free State Alliance breaks diplomatic contact with the North American Union

The Free State Alliance broke all diplomatic contact with the North American Union.

"The North American Union showed themselves to be unable to comply with the simple terms of a treaty.   Any attempt to land troops, be it construction brigades, garrisons, or other military units on Mars or Titan will be viewed as acts of aggression since the North American Union has shown itself incapable of keeping their word and the Free State Alliance has established full time scientific bases on both of those worlds.  We reserve the right to place garrison and construction brigades on these worlds by the right of first landing, and the simple fact that we do keep our word."

FSA Politics roundup

The National Front minority government plan has so far been a success, with only needing 3 votes from non-National Front parties to pass a law, there has been no risk of losing a important vote that would cause a new election.

The Liberal Party has undergone a re-branding, and now calls itself the Labour Party.  It is seeking to be a liberal voice that is more reasoned then the communists.

FSA announces Ruins on Titan

The FSA announced that ruins have been discovered on Titan.  A FSA scientific base has been placed around the ruins as FSA scientists explore the ruins, to determine if they are related to the ruins on mars.   The Ruins were discovered by a "De Beers" Class probe, and the science team that was with the VSS Tazenia was placed on Titan to secure the site for exploration.

The National Enquirer:

The FSA corners the alien ruins market

Is it funny to you that the FSA has forbidden access to Titan and Mars to the NAU because they are afraid of North American scientific abilities.  That was quite a timing! Just a few weeks ago, all was fine and now the FSA tries to keep the NAU out of all alien findings in the solar system. Will the NAU accept the status quo or will they respond in kind? Will the NAU fight back with the pugnacity the Point-Rouge Administration showed?

Stay tuned to this channel for more exciting action.

It has been (intentionally?) leaked to various Russian newspapers and media outlets that the ICBM bases still operated by the Russian Confederation have been rearmed with new Trans-Newtonian missiles. Confederation military figureheads have as-of-yet refused to comment on the capabilities of these new missiles, but it is suspected that were designed to bypass the American "Peacekeeper" meson system.

AFP: Amadh Al-Shebi first Congressman from Mars

Today, Amadh Al-Shebi was sworn in as Congressman for the Oversea Constitutency of Mars in the longest swearing in ceremony on record. Attenting via holovision, Al-Shebi took over two hours to swore his oath due to the ten-minute light-speed delay.

Together with Sonia Ramirez of the Oversea Constituency of Luna, Al-Sheb is the second Congressperson representing North Americans from outside Earth. Other members are expected to join the Space Caucus as new colonies are established around the solar system. While Ramirez attends session by holovision, Al-Shebi is expected to appoint a substitute due to the difficulty of attending Congress with a delay in the minutes.

Oversea Constituencies are normally used to give congressionnal representation to North Americans living abroad.

No specifications has been revealed to the public. While we can clearly see it is smaller compared to a traditional ICBM the capabilities are still guaranteed to be greater thanks to transnewtonian technology.

From the Office of the President of the North American Union

25 January 2102

To: All Heads of State, Government and Supranational Organisation of the United Nations

Dear Heads of State, Government and Supranational Organisation,

The North American Union finds itself in a quandary. A scientific breakthrough in a new propulsion system by our research establishment has the potential to further enhance our abilities to colonise the Solar System.

The technology – known as the Nuclear Pulse propulsion system – could however be construed as an infringement of Article IV of the Outer Space Treaty.  While the NAU believes it has a legal argument that the nuclear pulse unit in itself is not a weapon of mass destruction since it has no engines, it is unarmoured to penetrate the atmosphere nor does it have any form of fire control or means of directing it. The North American Union could do without further negative press following the Point-Rouge debacle.

While we could attempt to ignore this development and suppress any further research into this technology, it is far too late to put the ‘genie back in the bottle.’   Instead, the North American Union has decided to offer this technology up for sale. Widespread distribution will reinforce our current level of “Mutual Assured Destruction” while allowing all nations and supranations to see for themselves the truth of the nuclear pulse units.

The sale will be conducted through the Office of Science and Technology of the NAU. All countries are invited to present their bids before the 2nd of February 2102. PM replies are requested to be sent to the Director of the OST – Dr. Douglas Powers (Red Dot).  Payment for the access to the technology can be in Research Points, Credits or TN Mineral Resources.

Semper Paratus,

Lorenzo Rosso
President of the North American Union

AFP: Formation of the Extraplanetary Caucus of Congress

With the swearing ceremony of Isabelle Dubois, Congresswoman for Ceres, the number of Congresspeople from the outer space colonies reached the number for the creation of a Congressional caucus. The Extraplanetary Caucus (Called the ET Caucus by its opponents) will be headed by Al-Shebi of Mars. Its aim will be "the defense of the colonies' interest and promoting the use of space ressource for everyone's benefits".

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one Congressman from Earth complained that colonists were wielding a political influence well beyongd what their number deserve, as the colonies had much less people than the average constituency on Earth. "There are eight Congresspeople for less than a hundred thousand Spacers, while the average Congressperson has to represent over four millions citizens. Do you think that's fair?"

Dear Dr Klimov,

I have received your message and can indeed attend a meeting in Stockholm. Perhaps later this week would be at your convenience.

As far as the NAU being more cooperative, I am afraid it is much more a question of ensuring wider distribution of the technology to prevent being sanctioned by its perceived breakage of the OST. Nonetheless, I am sure we can reach a win-win agreement for our two supranations.

Stockholm, January 2102

Sweden always eager to attempt punching above their weight in international politics jumped on the chance to host a NAU-RC meeting after the Swiss had refused this time. Both delegations were greeted by the prime minister and Queen Estelle I (89 years but still healthy).

Not everyone was as eager as the swedish politicians to offer their country up as playground for the world powers. The swedish left keeping to their tradition of anti-americanism arranged a number of protests with people holding up placards saying things like "No to meson attacks on lake Mälaren, No to NAU!". On the other hand the NAU colonial leader Al-Shebi with roots in Syria has a strong personal following among the many descendants of syrian migrants to Sweden. A sizable group in Sweden today retaining strong hatred for Russia after russian support to the syrian Assad government last century. There has been violent clashes between the two groups in the days before the meeting.

The russian delegation is led by Romanova Vorontsov as government represenative and Vera Bulgakov as the technical expert. They both seem young for holding such important positions and Vera especially cannot help sometimes getting that deer-in-headlights look, this being her first time outside Russia. She will remain silent for now letting Romanova start the business talks.

After the hopefully successful negotiations the swedish hosts will offer refreshments at the Stockholm Concert Hall (where the Nobel reception is held). There will be free Absolut vodka (and possibly some interesting RP opportunities).

((Really nice  post, I like it. But just to make things clear, Al-Shebi isn't the NAU president. After Peacekeeper, Red Dot resigned his character, but kept the Presidency under a new persona (Punto Rosso). Since I was the brain behind DARK LETTER, I resigned all my posts (the vice-presidency now belong to kks) as a signal that we wouldn't do it again.

Al-Shebi has no official position. Fluff-wise he is the leader of the Mars Settlement (although his exact status is kept purposefully vague to avoid claims that the NAU is claiming Martian soil as sovereign territory), Congressman for Mars and leader of the ET Caucus of Congressmen from the eight solar colonies. As such he is kind of the elder statesman of the Colonies, even though most of his days are spent actually fixing water extractor and hydrolysis plants on the Martian surface, since the colony is still that small.))

Dr. Powers' NAU Air Force hyperjet lands in Stockholm after a quick 120 minutes flight.  Dr Powers is only accompanied by a single aide although if he needs it, he knows he can count on virtual support from Washington if he needs it.

Efficiently transported by a large Swedish police convoy to the site of the talks, Dr. Powers is much amused by the demonstrations against both the NAU and the RC. "I guess we also have enemies everywhere."

Once at the negotiating table, Dr. Powers greets the RC negotiating team and the hosts of the talks.  Once the pleasantries are dealt with, he sits down and proceeds with his opening remarks.

" Ladies and gentlemen, I am glad to meet you here in Stockholm for what I hope will be fruitful negotiations.  As was already mentioned by President Rosso, the NAU is offering the Nuclear Pulse Technology that we recently developed. An engine for which still is being developed but we are confident that it is valuable technology for the future of mankind in the Solar System.  Our main interest is of course to obtain some other TN research in exchange for this research.  With this opening remark complete, I would like to hear the RC's offer."

Title: Re: RP thread
Post by: AL on July 14, 2016, 08:05:04 PM
(OOC: oops sorry, thought we were actually doing this in a separate thread)

After a brief moment of awkward silence from the Confederation's delegation, one of their members stood up - Romanova Vorontsov, from the government arm.
"Dr Powers, apologies for the changes in our staff, but due to some internal issues the people from the Confederation that you may be more familiar with are... otherwise occupied at this time."

Romanova paused for a moment before continuing.

"As I am sure you are well aware, your revolutionary engine technology will herald a new era of space travel for the nations of Earth. Our technological innovations are all relatively minor in comparison, but I am sure you will find them to be just as valuable in working towards our shared vision of making the Solar System our home. To begin with, I am to offer three separate applications of the Transnewtonian elements that we have been investigating."

With a quick nod towards one of the technicians seated off to the side, what appeared to be a holographic projector set atop the negotiating table came to life.
"An interesting use of Corbomite to be sure," commented Romanova with a gesture toward the projector, "However the true object of our interest is what is being depicted."

The hologram itself seemed to show two rectangular sections of armour plating. The thicker of the two was labelled "control" while the other was labelled "dur_27".
Romanova began her commentary while slowly pacing around the table. "In our experimentation with Duranium alloys, we discovered a particular composition that was highly resistant to most conventional weapons while still being less dense than standard steel plate."

The hologram changed to show a test-firing range where two soldiers with rocket launchers were aiming at the armour plates from before. From an offscreen command, the soldiers fired their rockets simultaneously. After the resulting explosions had cleared, it could be seen that the "control" plate had a gaping hole in the centre while the other only had some superficial damage near the impact point.
"This technology would have obvious uses in the military, however a more peaceful application may be in protecting our astronauts from the various dangers of space."
To accentuate her point, the hologram briefly showed a CG animation of a meteor shower striking an old probe, which was inevitably crushed into dust.

"Our second offered technology is a fully automated cargo handling system."
The hologram switched to showing a hangar bay with dozens of robotic arms refuelling and loading cargo into an old cargo plane.
"Advances into Mercassium-based computing have allowed us to develop highly sophisticated quasi-AI's which significantly reduce the time needed to service and load cargo from any type of transport vehicle, including space borne freighters." She said that last part with a meaningful glance towards Dr Powers.

"Finally, we have been investigating a Boronide-based method of producing infra-red laser pulses."
The hologram flicked to showing a large laser unit aimed toward a chunk of blue-tinted stone.
"While the range is somewhat limited without any supporting optical foci, we believe this could still have useful applications in the extraction of transnewtonian elements from their ores."
From some unseen input, the laser in the hologram pulsed with power and the target stone seemed to instantly liquidate. The laser beam itself was of course invisible being of a wavelength below the visible spectrum, however small specks of the blue substance from the stone seemed to remain fixed in place where the laser intersected the stone, giving the otherwise invisible beam a ghostly outline.

With the showcase complete, the holographic projector powered down with a low whine.
"This should serve as a good starting place for our negotiations," concluded Romanova, "We will of course allow you to discuss what you've seen and heard with your colleagues before continuing the negotiations if you wish."
Returning to her chair, Romanova finally noticed a meaningful look from Vera beside her.
"Oh, and Ms Bulgakov will be available to verify any of the scientific aspects if needed."

Stockholm, January 2102

"Thank you Mrs Vorontsov. I have no doubt that Mrs Bulgakov can further explain the science behind these developments but that will not be necessary. It was for my own scientific background that I made it to the DSTO, so I am quite familiar with the developments you are proposing."

Powers reviews a file on his datapad.  "As you said earlier, Mrs Vorontsov, this is indeed a good starting position.  At least, it would have been a good position two years ago when the previous NAU Administration approached you with this offer of a technology exchange.  The problem is that two years have elapsed and our scientists and engineers have also been busy in many of those same fields of research."

Powers pulls its own holoprojector from its vest pocket. Yes, it's a much smaller version that the Russian one.  "For example, our Kombi-class Cargoliner already has a cargo handling system as you propose." Powers shows the cargoliner being offloaded on Europa. "We have also developed an armor system based on Duranium." Powers shows a similar test as the Russian but the test weapon system is an old naval railgun from the 21st Century and the results are similar as the Russians.

"That being said, it is not all negative. Your proposal of the Infrared Laser tech could indeed be of interest to the NAU. I have always dreamed of such a laser myself but by itself, it would definitely be insufficient."  Powers mulls his next words quite carefully.

"Let me be a bit more straightforward so that we can perhaps make quicker progress.  That NAU would prefer technologies which apply the new Trans-Newtonian elements in the area of Construction and Industrial Productivity.  A secondary area would be in the fields of Logistics and the application of the new minerals to Ground Combat.  Finally, our third area of interest would in missiles and kinetic weapons. Of course, we fully realise that you may not have devoted resources in those specific areas, so other are proposals would also be welcome."

Powers closes his holoprojector and puts it back in his vest pocket. "So Mrs Vorontsov, I suspect you may need more time to assess these proposals. I remain at your convenience."

Where is he now? The banished Congressman.

Panopticon's election to the senate seat vacated by Congressman Romero after his scandal shocked the nation, but was in retrospect not too surprising given the mans strange charisma and ability to focus the rage of his massive number of listeners to his popular broadcast "The Eye", additionally, his district had been gerrymandered in such a way as to be nearly ideal, the residents of which where later found to be no less than 90% "Eye-diots" (their own name for themselves) the district was approximately five kilometers wide on average and stretched from the north end of the old USA state of Florida all the way to Maine.

Of minor interest is his name, Panopticon's birth name is unknown, and according to the documents he presented when running for Congress the mononym he is known by is his legal name. Originally coined to describe a design of prison where a single guard can watch over the entire wing of inmates.

Today we on Earth hear little of Panopticon, as during the colonization program of 2101 his entire district was "randomly" selected to form the NAU colony on Mercury, necessitating he move as well. His show is still on the air as no way has yet been found to block the blanket broadcasts radiating from his fortified compound on Mercury's capitol of Gehenna, however he has changed the name to "The Corona" offering "The hottest takes from the hottest planet" and "News as unstoppable as a solar flare". To date, his claims to have focused the solar energy of our star into some form solar broadcasting laser remain unproven, if worrying.

Mercury remains an unsafe place to live for the majority of colonists, however no seats have been empty on the intermittent colonization runs made to the planet.

Meanwhile, back in Stockholm...
After a brief discussion among the Confederation delegates, Romanova addressed Dr Powers again.
"It would seem then that our areas of scientific interest are either highly parallel or completely at odds with one another, as the remainder of our research either lie outside your primary fields of interest or are still in the pipeline so to speak. The one other technology we believe you may not yet have developed yourself would be a set of engine modifications to improve the fuel economy of baseline star-faring engines..."

Romanova pauses briefly to try and gauge the doctor's reaction to this tidbit, "... but of course we doubt this would be sufficient to have you part ways with your own groundbreaking technology. As we appear to be completely out of bargaining chips for the time being, perhaps it would be best to conclude these negotiations so that we do not waste any more of your time. That being said however, I do encourage you and your assistant to join us at the reception afterwards, Dr Powers. It would certainly be a step towards fostering better relations between our two nations - I'm sure noone wants more of the old Cold War tensions."

Stockholm - January 2102

Interrupted from his current daydreaming scheme, Powers replies: "I am afraid you are quick to dismiss these negotiations Mrs Vorontsov."

Standing to face the Russian delegation, Powers continues: "We were quite aware of the possibility that our research accomplishments could have been very much aligned. We would like to propose that if we cannot exchange current technological achievements, perhaps we could exchange our Nuclear Pulse Technology for future Russian research and development successes. Let me give you an example.  Both your IR Laser and the Fuel Economy tech are of interest to us. That's already 1500 RP of the 5000 RP we are asking for our own tech. We agree to a further 3500 RP in researches that you wish to conduct in the next 4-12 months and when your part of the deal is complete, we swap the information."

Walking around the conference room, Powers adds: "For those 3500 RP, it could be Construction Rate 12 BP and Magazine Ejection System - 70% or any combination in other areas where our interests converge. The advantage of this method of exchange is that it allows a coordinated use of our respective research budgets.  The RC does not need to invest in Nuclear Pulse and we do not need to invest in the areas where you will be working. Surely you must see the win-win scenario this contingency provides even as a Confidence-Building Measure."

Stockholm - January 2102 (we should have split this into a separate thread)

Bulgakov now joins the conversation.

Quote
When speaking about future research this is to a large extent the area of my department, though the Duma must of course approve of many major projects.. thinking scientific creativity can be controlled and results demanded like.. eh.. what was I saying. Right, the topic of what kind of science might be of interest to the NAU. Magazine technology is not receiving any funding from my office she says with a quick defiant look towards Romanova. But for other kinds of technology there could be opportunities for coordination of efforts.

Stockholm January 2102

"I definitely feel your pain Mrs Bulgakov," replies Dr. Powers. "As scientists, we all have to suffer through political interference. At least, I am fortunate enough that my politician come and go every few years.  That tends to allow progress to resume."

Looking at both Vorontsov and Bulgakov, Powers continues: "Perhaps I have been too specific in our areas of interest.  The three I have mentioned earlier are not exclusive. All areas of research could be of interest to the NAU. For example, if you are going to study further in Duranium Armor, Lasers, perhaps even capacitor recharge rate. This would be of interest to the NAU. We would also be interested in advanced ground combat units or sensor capabilities whether they are Gravitational, Electromagnetic or Thermal. Just like the RC, we have only begun to develop our researchers and we have focused much of our efforts into getting the NP technology.  Where do you think you want to focus your efforts in the next 4-12 months?"

***H-SPAN: Al-Shebi delivers first speech on foreign policy***

My dear colleagues, I would like to talk today about our attitudes to the world.

After the Peacekeer Crisis, many supported a more isolationist course. Intervention had brought us close to nuclear anihilation, and the tentation to retreat behind our borders was great.

It is however becoming incredibly clear that this decision was a mistake. Our previous ally, the FSA, who might have overlooked the foolishness of the Point-Rouge administration didn't forgive the break-up of previous treaty by the administration of Punto Rosso. Instead of exploring and settling new worlds hand-in-hand, we are risking confrontation.

Space is big and unforgiving. Humanity cannot afford to be divided. If I need a spare part for a re-oxygenator in Mars City, will I turn to the FSA Space Station a hundred mile away, or to Washington a hundred milion miles away?

Our settlers, our traders, our scientists all need deeper cooperation with the other major power. I hereby move a resolution that Congress formally apologize for the Peacekeeper Crisis and the following break-up of treaties, and start working on re-establishing our previous relations with the FSA.

May 1st is FSA day.

Ringing out from out deep void,

From our deep seas  breaking round;

Over everlasting mountains

Where the echoing crags resound;

From our plains where creaking wagons

Cut their trails into the earth

Calls the spirit of our Country,

Of the land that gave us birth.

At thy call we shall not falter,

Firm and steadfast we shall stand.

At thy will to live or perish,

O Free State, dear land

Adele Van Resburg at a FSA day celebration helped launch the third ship of the FSA void Navy, the VSS Magnus Malan.  The young PM was all smiles, recent polls indicate that the National Front had been gaining support as the FSA continues to expand.

"Today is a great day for the Free State Alliance, we have launched our third Patrol vessel, the Magnus Malan, this has been carried out by the unity of the FSA.  Our Scientists, our Unions, our financial sector, our militaries all worked together not only to build the first patrol vessel from earth, but now we have launched our third one while other nations have not even launched their first one. We will continue to build more patrol ships, we plan to build at least 12 of these, some with a modified sensor array.  In addition, today I will annouce that the FSA will propose the orderly claiming of small bodies in the solar system for mining at the UN.

We have always stated one hand with a book, the other with a rifle.  We stand here today, and launch yet another rifle in the Name of the Free State."

The ship is clocks in at 1,600 Tons and expected to join the VSS Hannibal in training.

A recent survey of aerospace engineers suggests that your design needs, and I quote, "moar boosters" and "moar struts" as the top two survey results.
The top 5 survey results:
  • "Needs moar boosters" or equivalent
  • "Needs moar struts" or equivalent
  • "Lacks sufficient armor" or equivalent
  • "I see the FSA has DA BIG GUNZ now." or equivalent
  • "Seems legit, but where's the life support equipment?"
Survey was a free-response question posed to 1000 aerospace engineers. Results were not counted if the engineer giving them looked at all serious.

Meanwhile back in Stockholm in January 2102...

Seeing the intense discussion around the Russian side of the negotiating table, Dr. Powers attempts to attract their attention. "Mrs Vorontsov, Mrs Bulgakov, a moment of your time if you please.  I am wondering if an intermediate step to the NP Technology would not assuage your mind that the NAU sees this trade as purely a business transaction. We would like to offer the precursor technology to the NP, the so-called Pebble Reactor, in exchange for your IR laser and the Fuel Economy Technology. Hopefully, this intermediate will establish my credentials and help with further discussions."

Another intense discussion ensues before Romanova turns to address Dr Powers again.
"We were under the impression that the background for any preceding technologies would be included in the Nuclear Pulse technology package as a bare necessity of allowing our scientists to decipher your findings. {{OOC: pretty sure transferring a technology automatically unlocks all previous techs for the receiving nation, a limitation of Aurora}} If this were not the case, then we definitely would not have the technologies available to trade for Nuclear Pulse and all its preceding research. As we have no interest in having our future research dictated by your nominated areas of interest, I feel it would be best to call an end to this series of negotiations. Perhaps in the future when our research has had time to diversify more we could consider conducting further trade negotiations, but at present we simply do not have enough to trade fairly with you."
Title: Re: RP thread
Post by: Red Dot on July 22, 2016, 09:13:08 PM
Powers looks up quite annoyed: "I believed you were more aware than these negotiations are showing."

"Perhaps you need to know that the FSA gave us all of the Meson knowledge that led to the Peacekeeper Incident. They gave us the Beam Fire Control and many other Techs while we gave them the precursor techs to get them to the NP tech. Meanwhile you are lingering with fighter sized units. BRAVO. I agree maybe in in few centuries you guys will have something we might want."

"Next time, call me on PM or I will not show up."  Powers folds up his documents and leaves for the airport.

New Russian administrator Gaius Julius Machinatus gave a speech on the fragile state of the peace in this era of rapid technological development:

Quote
Mutually assured destruction. The reason why nominally allied nations kept fortified underground silos capable of raining death and destruction on the other without hope of stopping it.
The newly discovered transnewtonian minerals have apparently limitless potential for both creation and destruction. Thus the power balance is ever more fragile and each nation hopes they will be the one to first guarantee their own population safety and be able to destroy the other's without hope of survival. Thus the biggest deterrent to bathing one's opponents in nuclear fire is the uncertainty. Can we really launch a first strike with impunity? And are we actually capable of completely circumventing their defenses? It is this uncertainty that holds the peace together, as the consequences of guessing wrong are terrifying. Pax vobiscum.

FSA offers ships for Sale/Lease

The FSA has announced that it is offering though the  Bureau of Ships and Services(BOSS) the sale and leasing of ships and other weapon systems produced by FSA firms.  BOSS does not actually build the ships, but is a central state owned office to help market FSA Ships and services.

BOSS sales catalog, shown at the Paris Air and Space show, includes the following.

VSS Tanzania (FSSA):  First ship to explore Saturn, now deemed surplus to the requirements of the FSA.
Scipio Africanus/BIS (Denel Dynamics): , A export approved version of the patrol craft currently used by the FSA.
SH-01 Avaid Shuttle (Qods): a small <500 ton shuttle to move personnel around.  Three versions depending on your range/speed needs.
GEO-01 Rhodes (Qods): a small <500 ton Geological surveyor
BOSS overhaul service: Need a ship serviced?  Boss can arrange a overhaul.

The NAU would be potentially interested in a couple of Rhodes and potentially a Avaid, depending on its specs. What would the prices be like?

BOSS sales information.

Both Avid and Rhodes are fighters for maintenance

Avid Specs
Standard - 2700+ km/s top speed, 70 billion mile range.
FastAvid - 3700+ km/s top speed, 50 billion mile range.
SolAvid - 4000+ km/s top speed, 20 billion mile range

Rhodes
1300 Km/s top speed, 21 billion mile range.

Prices are negotiated per order, but Avids are rather inexpensive while the Rhodes are more expensive due to complexity.

As a note, Quods is adding capacity (Plans are to triple current capacity in the next year), so delivery dates are moving targets as Quods gains fighter factories.      Once expansion is complete, a Rhodes would take about a year to build, while 3-4 Avids could be built in the same time-frame.

Stockholm:
Bulgakov tries to end on a positive note saying that these negotiations despite all can be seen as a success since there are now at least some talks going on for the first time since the Peacekeeper incident which made many in the RC wary against the NAU. But there are also those that would rather look to the future than the past.

[OOC]How fast are they going? Even Proxima Centauri is ~4.5 light-years away, although ships in Aurora travel really fast. However, with the most efficient Ion engines at my disposal in a TN start, the maximum theoretical attainable speed [the speed of the ship when engines account for 100% of its mass] is only about 3500 km/s.[/OOC]

The way you put it in quotes made me think that you were saying that "Darwin Device" was what the Turks actually called their device that sounds like a sublight Alcubierre drive. Or a targetable wormhole generator (which would effectively be a jump drive that doesn't require a jump point) but that would take hours or minutes, not over a century. Or whatever it is.

TL;DR: I misunderstood your previous statement.

I am pleased to announce that Patrol Craft operating under the command of NAN Captain Jacqueline Grant has located the Turkish vessel ARK a few millions miles inside of Neptune's orbit. The ship was mostly empty, the crew having been killed by the Red Duncanites or forced to join them. Some passengers that hid in a hold were rescued, and are currently headed to Mars for health check-up. The people of Mars City feels a kinship with those space pioneers and have offered to make them citizens there, although they will be returned to Earth if they so desire.

The question of what to do with the remain of the Ark has been hotly discussed. In the absence of a treaty on salvage in space, the NAU has decided to apply the of naval right of salvage and will be claiming the infrastructure not stolen by the Red Duncanite

TNICBM:s have made the previous generation like the Bulava series completely obsolete also for submarine launches. Despite the superior speed of the TNICBM:s the RC are still keeping it's submarine launch platforms as a complement to the land based silos and here we see one them being fitted with the new launcher and missile.

There has been speculation what is happening with the obsolete ICBM:s since the RC has not commented officially on this except confirming they are now out of active service. Evil rumours say they have just been dumped on top of one of the old soviet era dump sites in the arctic ocean. Environmental groups like Greenpeace have unsuccessfully been trying to get an official response from the Russian government. They have however not approached russian territorial waters to investigate on their own. It is well known the russian coast guard does not hesitate to shoot at Greenpeace ships from a number of incidents over the last century relating to the russian exploitation of arctic oil fields.

Addressing the nation (and the world) in a new years speech Aleksis Klimov, now a senior member of the government talked about both internal business and international relations.

He commended the strong growth of russian industry over the past year and also promised to make it easier for cross-border workers from neighbouring countries to get russian working permits. As well as mentioning closer relations to neighbouring "eastern bloc" nations he also talked about the RC using their voice in the UN to also look out for the smaller non-aligned nations.

In foreign policy the RC will remain committed to peace and non-aggression - as our words as well as actions ever since the Réunion crisis have proven. But we will also out of necessity maintain a strong defensive force to counter any outside aggression, be it from imperialistic ambition or space piracy.

Another topic was space colonization: While Russia still has vast stretches of land available on Earth and have no need to rush into space for new land or for simple prestige we believe the future of humanity lies in space. There will soon be Russian colonies in the solar system. We will also be working with the other space powers to ensure this new frontier is exploited in a responsible manner - to the benefit of humanity as a whole rather than greedy company executives.

There is also one more thing. Something the RC wishes to share with the world in the spirit of cooperation. Russian scientists have studied the ruins on Mars and deciphered the language of the aliens who once lived there. They called themselves the "Straton Dynasty". Their population was never big and they lead a harsh life on a planet with a thinning atmosphere, getting colder with more and more of the water being trapped under the polar caps. We have translated a number of their texts and we can also publish pictures on what they and their civilization looked like - because they were advanced and intelligent. And the canals were real. All of this will be published on the website of the Russian Science Ministry for the benefit of scientists and citizens of the world.

FSA Politics Roundup

The Communist Party - Free State alliance announced that it was changing it platform to be more pro-Russian.   There are rumors that it due to external influence, but it cannot be confirmed.
Most citizens are happy.   The FSA is in their view maintains the strongest Void navy and are pleased with the new colonies that have been established.

Mars Elections

Mars, having a stable population of over 1 million, gets to elect their own Congress under the FSA Constitution.  It will gain seats in the main chamber if it gains 4 million population.  Mars has formed many parties and shows the youth and vibrancy of Mars democratic government.

The First Mars Election was as follows for the Mars congress (200 seats)

National Front - 52% of the vote - 104 seats
Social Credit Party (Mars) - 26% of the vote - 52 seats
Christian-Islamic Democratic Union 12% - 24 seats
Mars Congressional Republic Party - 6% of the vote - 12 seats
MarsOne - 4% of the vote - 8 seats

The internet is overflowing with conspiracy theories after the attack on the russian science vessel. The terrorists obviously have advanced weapons, who could have supplied them? Their first attack left a ship where the NAU just happened to find it shortly after. Their second attack was directed against the RC. Some theories say the Ark was a sort of payment..

But naturally no mainstream media or respectable politician would believe such things.

Just happened to find it?

We sent a scout on the heading it took when it left Earth, information that any power with an active sensor or a diplomatic relationship with Turkey should have been able to access, don't blame us for using logic in our operations. :P

As a note - when more then one side has colonies on a planet with Ruins, those sides will know when a ruin is being "exploited"

FSA announces that they turned on a Automated mine on Mars from the ruins.  It will be used in the FSA Mars colony for now.

Press Release
FSA Naval High Command

The FSA High Command, and Naval command have the sad duty to inform the public that the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh, the newest ship in the Free State Alliance fleet, was lost in a battle with a Red Duncanite ship near Rhea (Saturn)

Near 500 hours Zulu time the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh, in orbit around Titan, reported a unknown active sensor from the inner moons of Saturn.   After alerting the FSA, NAU, and Russian colonies located on Titan, the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh, under the temporary command of a Jr. Officer began to burn towards the unknown contact.

Near the orbit of Rhea, the unknown ship turned to flee.  The VSS Mahmoud Kaveh hailed the ship.   It identified itself as the Demogorgon and claimed to be part of the Red Duncanite movement.   It was ordered to surrender, and refused.   A brief chase began, but the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh showed itself to be faster, and the Duncanite ship then altered its heading to  approach and to give combat.

In a close quarters combat (CQC) that was within 100k, both sides where able to land hits.  However, the first strike of the Duncanite ship caused the engine of the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh to explode.  Crippled the VSS Mahmoud Kavehwas soon rendered fully combat disabled.   The Demogorgon then informed the crew that lifepods would be collected, prisoners interrogated, then dumped into space.  Unable to defend themselves, the VSS Mahmoud Kaveh was then struck till it broke apart.

The VSS Mahmoud Kaveh had 69 naval personnel on board.

FSA Press - Key void colonies are now garrisoned.

The Durban Times, along with FARS has published an article dealing with FSA deployments in "Void" (I.E. outside of earth orbit) of the Vrystaat Weermag (VSW).   The FSA has placed garrison units on more then one world to secure claims and defend major colonies.

When asked, the FSA high command stressed that as Garrison units they are of a defensive nature, and more intended for crowd control.

Several russian aircraft manufacturers, most notably Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Sukhoi, Yakulev and Tupolov, have been working together on a new airframe. This new design is space capable and will form the basis for several models of spacegoing patrol vessels ordered by the russian state. There has been very few details released, except that the designs will be up to 500 tons.

Different manufacturers have been putting in prototypes for evaluation by the navy in a number of categories like fighter, scout and multi-role crafts over the past few months. The russian aerospace industry seems to have made a smooth transition into the transnewtonian era.

Several other countries were quick to express interest in buying RC manufactured patrol crafts. The official statement so far is that all manufacturing capacity is currently in use to fulfil contracts with the russian navy. But the RC is positive to eventually offering models to the international market as well.

While several prominent RC leaders like Aleksis Klimov have been strong supporters of the Outer Space Treaty in spirit as well as in letter and debated against militarization of space the russian navy seems to have won this round. With threats from the Red Duncanite terrorists proven to be real as well as NAU intentions with their militarization of space remaining unclear Klimov has been unusually silent on the matter lately.

The FSA has announced that they have engaged and eliminated a Red Duncanite minelayer operating in the inner belt region.

Official press release

FSA sensors detected a unknown Red Duncanite ship traveling in the asteroid belt.  The VSS Charlene Wittstock and the VSS Amin Gemayel where undergoing training nearby.  They were vectored by the sensors to the craft.  The ship was offered a chance to surrender, but it refused, and the two patrol craft then fired several shots.  Even when damaged the ship refused to surrender, and changed it vector towards earth.  This gave the Navy no choice but to eliminate the ship.

The FSA did gain valuable information.  It also give public notice that inner belt may have mines.

We would like to offer our sincere congratulation to the FSA. Space is becoming safer every day. Could we know where that minelayer was intercepted, so that we might attempt to avoid areas that might be mined? Where any mine laid during the engagement?

I think we should establish a permanent commission to share information on the Red Duncanites.

NAU analyst Dr. Grahams would like to elaborate a pact that respects the autonomy and security of all nations while protecting our peoples.

1. All live confrontations with Red Duncanites will be disclosed to all nations engaged in the struggle against interplanetary terrorism. The NAU will freely offer this information unconditionally, with the expectation that this trust will be returned.

2. Any unprovoked and sudden attack by Red Duncanite terrorists will be aided by all ships of any nation that is within range to respond, unless the action is a hopeless cause or the ships are urgently needed to defend elsewhere. This analyst believes that the NAU has already demonstrated their commitment to this idea and believes it to be a common-sense approach against a common enemy.

Thank you for listening.

RC Fleet Management Officer Keryakov points out that the "hopeless" clause is kind of shady and up to interpretation. We however agree to cooperation against hostile threats to security in the solar system.

Dr. Grahams would like to declare several clear possibilties for a "hopeless" effort-

A. If reinforcement cannot be expected to be made in time to influence the battle, but would only avenge the fallen.

B. If, even with timely reinforcement, the enemy would still possess a greater than trivial advantage in combat-effective tonnage.

Addendum: (I propose we define this as a case where the estimated combat-effective enemy fleet tonnage would still outmass remaining combat-effective allied fleet by 20% or more. If, say, half the meson tubes on a fleet are out, that counts as roughly half the actual tonnage being combat-effective tonnage. It's an open secret that all of our nations have intrasolar monitoring arrays excellent enough to gauge the proximate amount of damage done to any fleet. Dishonesty can be known swiftly-being coy or less than truthful would be quickly obvious.)

Addendum Two: In the event that a significant technological weaponry gap appears evident between our nations and an enemy, we will adjust this requirement to a 20% disparity of estimated hull damage per second each fleet can provide. This clause is not to be invoked slightly and is intended to cover the case of extrasolar threats.

Addendum Three In the event of a probable total system extinction scenario, I would release each nation to escort whatever refugees that may exist. The NAU sperm cannon will be made available for reseeding purposes.

C. If the defending nation itself declares an effort to be hopeless, and releases nearby nations from the duty to help.

Why does the FSA love Luna?

August 14th, 2103 Tycho City (the FSA settlement on Luna) was a sleepy outpost of 10,000 people, carrying out scientific experiments.
December 25, 2103 Tycho City, with massive investment from private FSA investors, has grown into the size of Tehran, with over 8 million settlers.

(OOC: I never seen a settlement grow so fast, guess there was pent up demand.. :o :o :o.   Also, there will be FSA elections since both Luna and Mars hit the 4 million mark this year)

As the new year celebrations approach in Moscow the russian people can look back at many achievements during the year. Scientific discoveries are made at a rate never before believed possible, colonies established and space fighters flying between planets. A whole generation of russian youths are now dreaming of a future in space.

The theme for Klimovs new year speech was how Russia is the guarantor for peace and prosperity in this age when the final frontier is at last opened up to humanity.

(this is the 22nd century, cold-war retro style propaganda posters is the latest fashion for any self-respecting superpower)

In a paper in front of the International Astrophysical Union, JPL Head of Research Elisha Rak read the abstract of her latest paper. "The discovery that large amount of mass is not affected by gravity and inertia as we know it forced us to correct many past observations. The relativist understanding of gravity simply isn't enough to explain those observations. The only way to correct the theory is to suppose that folds in the space-time continuum."

While Prof. Rak assured the audience that talk of FTL travel was premature, people noticed the unusual number of people in dark suits and sunglasses in the auditorium, as well as the unusual delay in the paper's publication.

There is a lot of speculation going on about what the next thing coming out of the russian spacecraft factories will be. It is known a number of smaller designs from various manufcturers have been under review by the fleet for some time. But there are also rumours that something bigger may be in the russian plans.

The russian admirality however have been silent, neither confirmation nor denial. Even keeping a straight face when asked by reporters about genetically modified vacuum-breathing sharks with lasers on them.

Russian industry are looking back at yet another successful year. Order stocks are full, to a large extent driven by the space exploration and colonization of new worlds. Production of transnewtonian minerals are up as well as classic industrial goods and oil. The current 5-year plan is already looking to surpass expectations. And of course, the vodka production also increased with new exciting brands like Starfire and the appropriately coloured Red Mars launching this year.

The future is in space and the The Russian Confederation is the path to the future for many around the world. The motherland has extended it's arms, spreading peace, prosperity and socialism 2.0 further than anyone could have imagined just a decade ago.

The trend of learning russian as a second language has accelerated in many countries, but lately especially in the EU. Many are not willing to wait for their own national space program to embrace transnewtonian technology and are instead actively seeking to migrate for the chance to be among the first on a new world. The 22nd century version of socialism is truly international.

Read on for an interview with Aarif, 24. He is telling the story of how his family long ago migrated first from Turkmenistan to a better life in Sweden during the early 2000's.  After "Swexit" in 2021 however they had to relocate again to Germany to keep their EU citizenship. Now he is taking evening classes in russian hoping to be accepted into the RC and once again make the successful move for his family to a more wealthy and prosperous country. Ironically a confederation of which the familys original homeland is now a member state.

Election day in the FSA

Today is a huge day for the FSA. This is the first time interplanetary elections will be held in the FSA.

There will be 289 up for grabs on earth, 5 on Luna, and 1 on Mars.   Other FSA colonies are still handled by the colonial office.

In addition both Luna and Mars will be holding local elections in their 100 seat congresses.

In addition, Senate seats will be appointed.  Luna and Mars will get one designated seat, and the colonial office will obtain one to represent the other colonies.  This is in addition to the regular appointments by vote share.  On earth each .34 of a percent of the vote will earn a seat for the party.

The appointment of general SwordLordvski as chief of army implicates there could once again be changes coming in the russian defense policy. Recently the navy has pretty much had their pick of new cool toys out of the labs. But with a strong ground force proponent in the top russian leadership there is speculation that Bulgakov may have to listen to the army as well and allow a few of their projects funding again.
