Sci-fi no longer so
« on: September 16, 2015, 12:10:58 PM »
So, who else is excited that some sci-fi weapons are starting to show up such as the BAE EM Railgun using the HVP rounds, the LaWS and the Blitzer. So if you were designing things with these techs and currently used stuff, what would you make?

What's this? New weapons? More things to strap onto the f-35, sounds like!

This is the kind of stuff you would want your sr 72 equipped with.
 From Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_SR-72
"Construction of an optionally-piloted scaled demonstrator is planned to start in 2018. The demonstrator will be about 60 ft (18 m) long, about the size of an Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, and powered by one full-scale engine to fly for several minutes at Mach 6.[1][2] Flights of the demonstrator are to be conducted starting in 2023. The SR-72 flight testing follows the planned timeline for the hypersonic High Speed Strike Weapon. The SR-72 is to be similar in size to the SR-71 at over 100 ft (30 m) long and have the same range, with entry into service by 2030. The SR-72 follows the US Air Force's hypersonic road map for developing a hypersonic strike weapon by 2020, and a penetrating ISR aircraft by 2030"
It seems likely that the proposed black swift aircraft is the same as the sr 72, it's a fitting name for the successor of the blackbird. The end goal seems to be development of a Mach 20 hyper velocity interceptor. At 7km/s we're just going to be approaching the low edge of "conventional engine technology" as aurora defines it, for comparison an sr71 goes 1km/s, the space shuttle reaches 8 km/s to reach low earth orbit, New horizons/voyager reached 16-17km/s and earths orbital velocity is 30 km/s.
The highest speed attainable in aurora with conventional engines is 300 km/s which is .1% of light speed. This might be attainable with ion rockets.

How would you guys use them? What I would do (if I had a say in things) would be make a Battleship. It would have 3 double turrets of the BAE EM Railguns (two in front one in rear), a broadside of 2-5 Blitzers (each side) as secondaries, A couple Phalanx all over, some AA autocannons (like the M242 gun), of course a helipad or two, and some missiles (both AA, and ASMs for reliability). I feel the resurrection already happening though, the battleships shall rise again.

Good to see you have found your way back here athom. Well, if railguns really get a future that allows them to surpass missile systems, that would be awesome to hear. Away with these flimsy naval guerilla-warfare destroyers! Though I suppose the main problem "weapon-tech >>> armor-tech" still stands, so you wouldn't want to lose too much resources from just one good hit or two...
It could shift to some sort of gunboat instead. The smallest thing that can still operate one of the most appropriate guns.
