The last upgrade is made 22 years later and is a major rebuilding of almost the whole ship, increase in speed, almost doubling its VLS launchers, better passive defences and designated a Destroyer, but still only a thin armor. On a more serious note, I wonder if the CIWS is actually worth its weight - it seems to me that the fleet would be better served by a more general-purpose gauss installation that could be used for fleet defense, instead of being limited to defending just the ship it's mounted on.

I imagine the Mk II and Mk IV upgrades were more then the cost of a whole new ship - given that the first adds another engine and strips out the armament completely for a new weapons array, and the second almost doubles the design's weight.
