As stated in the title, I'm still dolling up and organizing My Very First Fleet; so expect a prettier post soon.      The next post will have the history, fluff and such behind the ships, ordinances and such.     .     .      along with a more organized presentation for those who want the "lore" behind the ships and those who just want the TL;DR short-version.      I intend to take design this fleet in it's entirety first, then Role-Play it out with the premises of, "I have no idea what is waiting for me out there.     .     .     " All the ships here are built with that in mind and using the fewest techs I can possibly get away with.     .     .      with more latitudes given to "Racial Techs" for the components themselves and far, FAR stricter prejudice foisted on 'upgrade' or 'advanced' techs.      The ship roles differ wildly from their current age IRL wet navy counterparts, and the 3, 5, and 9 year deployments are deliberate.      I'm currently polishing out the strategy, but here's the rough overview for anyone interested:

Basically, you have one Athens as the flag ship, with a possible second Athens being used by a Commodore; with the exception of use by a Commodore (who would be commanding from the front), the Athens is meant to stay back from the "front lines".     .     .      and I use that term loosely.      The goal is to have five Athens in total, three for "regular" use, one reserved for the Admiralty and one set aside for the Commodore role.      Each Athens has groups under it serving comprising of Cruisers and Frigates serving in three, three year "tours".      As such, most ships are geared for three year deployments, or a single "tour" with a minimum of nine groups on "active duty" at any given time.      Logistics Vessels serve five year deployments to account for a year's worth of transit round trip (so two years total, one there and one back, just for clarity's sake.     ).      This gives them the options of either being "on haul" with a maximum two way trip range of two and a half years, or being able to go a whole year out and remain "on station" to provide support for a single three year "tour".      This allows a single group to fulfill three "tours" on it's own it when the group is within a year of any resupply point capable of supporting it.      Of note: the Fafnir class serves double duty as a command ship, standing in for the Athens while those behemoths are still being built.      Destroyers and Ranger class Carriers serve as attachments to Cruiser and Frigate groups, among other things, and as such are more independent of formations.      After the Athens can take over command roles, the Fafnir class ships serve as a long range fire support vessel intended to allow the "command group" with the Athens to support a fleet action from afar.     

And that's about it for now, anyone who wants to see the current WIP templates and can stomach the hurried, and therefore crap formatting feel free to read on.      Leave any criticism, feedback, or opinions as desired.      And thanks in advance if you end up reading through them all!

NINJA EDIT: I intend to focus on upgrading existing ships through the "refit to" function of the shipyards, assuming my understanding of the mechanic is correct.  Much like the real world navies (at least here the USA) rather than scrap old hulls and build new ones for EVERY stinking advancement, old hulls are updated and refurbished with newer tech and equipment to expand their longevity.  I still intend to create new classes and vessels, but this fleet is designed under the assumption I can make a new "class" of say. . .  an Intrepid, and just use "refit to" to fit new launchers, engines, sensors and whatnot to make the new "Intrepid".  Much like how the Gearing-Class Destroyer was made, or the Dunkerque-Class Submarine. . .  err. . .  Battlecruiser.  If this is not the how "refit to" works, I may need to scrap the line. . .  although I probably won't since it makes a good first goal before I make some sort of enemy contact.  The plan BTW is to start Conventional (as after playing around a little bit, I found I liked that one best, FYI this is not my first 4x) with 3 NPR non-TN races, have the Precursors and Space Swarm ON, then sort of just. . .  have at it, I suppose.  It will be my first real "game" BTW.  I wan't to have a plan first, then see how my plan crumbles when it makes contact with the enemy.

Some of your ships are REALLY slow.  At 65 km/s, one of your colony ships will take on average 40 days Earth-to-Mars (one way).  Heck, the orbital speed of Mars is about 24 km/s!  They'll need a lot of upgrading before they're fit for travel to even a neighbouring system, never mind three or four jumps.

Interesting. A couple minor points:

1) Multiple passive sensors of the same type provide redundancy but do not stack, only the strongest in any one location applies. So the Legacy Sensor Frigate would probably do better with a mix of passive EM, passive TH, and active scanners than six different EM sensors.

2) Traditionally Colony ships, Tankers, and Freighters are designed as commercial ships because commercial ships never expend maintenance supplies unless repairing battle damage.

3) I still think your fleet has excessive range for a civilization with no jump tech, but if you expect the first generation to have the same operational range as your mid-game ships then never mind.

4) I've seen cryogenic fighter lifeboats, but I've never seen anyone design fighter-sized colony ships! Very unique. Please report back on their utility.

coming at this from a bean counting standpoint, such a large ship (athens) at such a low tech level probably has unacceptable costs in your industrial and research expansion. 

there are various ways to skirt the maintenance facilities requirement, which is the real killer.  i personally would have the shipyard and maybe some of the components ready to go, and build the ship on first contact (with the maintenance facilities not built).  you war all over the hapless bug eyed monsters and your battleship is possibly dead, probably redundant or obsolete by the time it needs overhaul, and if those arent the case, at least liberated maintenance facilities will pick up a good chunk of your cost.

also, looking at your text instead of just your designs:  starting conventional exacerbates the maintenance facility problem, and ISTR that NPRs that start non-TN never develop into threats.

The Colony Ships are using Conventional Engines.  However, I'm going to change that considering the non-TN don't develop into threats.  So I'll just do a TN start with TN NPRs and use Nuclear Thermal engines on those ships.  I didn't know Passive Thermal Sensors existed for ships, and knowing that they don't stack is good.  Do Active Sensors stack in any way?

Nope, as far as I am aware, each sensor operates as if it is the only sensor on any ship in the area.  So mounting two size-1 active sensors, will not get you a size-2 active sensor....but a size-2 will fit where those 2 size-1's did.

edit:  upon further reading, looks like the hare has a very ironic name,  might want to give that survey fighter an engine if you plan on it being able to catch orbiting bodies.

I am trying to think of what starting conditions would allow you to have such a multiplicity of types, and therefore multiple shipyards while staying relatively low tech so that they didn't become obsolete really quickly.

Maybe if research costs were a lot higher or something.  Because otherwise, the same BP investment in Research Labs would render that collection obsolete in a single year.  It is difficult to have a large economy and stay low tech.

The Tortoise is rather peculiar.  It is 8k tons of ship with a 500 ton payload, the hangar?

Why does the Hare even have an engine if its speed is 1 km/s?  That is rather peculiar.  Part of the problem is that for fighters and missiles, speed is rounded to the nearest 100 km/s, I think.  So if you have insufficient engine power to get to 100 km/s, you are stuck at 1 km/s.

I like the Valkyrie concept, except you don't have a fire control that can make use of the turret's tracking.  You need to create a fighter specific beam fire control to take advantage of the x4 tracking speed fighters get.

Support ships should be commercial, not military.  Those tankers should definitely be commercial.

I have a REAL problem that you spend about 30k RP to get space marine companies and 6k for boarding pod company without a whole bunch of other techs that would improve your fighting capacity a lot more.  Boarding pods are normally something I get around Magnetic Plasma tech.  And my first boarding pods are Battalion sized, because the 20k to research Marine Company is a lot slower than just boarding with Assault Infantry.

The turret on your Valkyrie interceptor is pointless.  Your fire-control only has 1250kms tracking speed.  You won't get any benefit from the turret.

Your colony ship is also way too tiny, it'll take thousands of trips to move a reasonable amount of population.

The Valkyrie concept is salvageable.  You can research a fighter only FC that gets the full benefit of the turret.  I just don't see the point of both a turret and a straight firing gauss.  One or the other, on a platform that small.

I do hope those ships with thousands of MSP have Maintenance Storage, because that would be ridiculously expensive to do that with engineering spaces.

And it is sort of odd to have ships with HUGE endurance that are going to become obsolete so fast.  I suppose if you go to racial info and artificially reduce your research rate, then you stay at low tech for low enough for those ships to see some service.

Turrets are never pointless, they look cool!

(Plus, it's a lot easier to refit a barely- or not-even-faster turret to a new set of gears than to install a turret from scratch in a ship that was never designed for one.)

Fair enough.  I suspect it does wonders for the life expectancy of the ball turret gunner to replace said turret with a fixed gun position.
