If I get something like a shield with a strength 10, recharge 2 and recharge time 300s does it mean every 300s it gets +2 to its power? Or is this calculated gradually in 5s increments too, so after 150s you would accumulate 1 power? Or maybe with rounding is accumulating 0.5 enough ... so if you start at 0s with power 0 will you get 1 rounded power at 75s (0.5 recharged), then next one at 225s (1.5 recharged)?

It regenerates gradually, I'm not certain about rounding.

afaict, shields arn't calculated per component but on a per ship basis.  Thus, a ship with 300 strength - 300 recharge would regenerate 1 shield point per second (or 5 per 5s increment).

As @TheDeadlyShoe said, shields work simultaneously to recharge over the whole ship, not one at a time. Hence why shields are a more popular choice for defending lager ships because you get an exponential value the more you add. Ton for ton armor gives more raw defense, but shields give a better buffer as they constantly recharge and block shock damage. Also keep in mind you can repair shields mid-battle, and armor you cannot.

Edit; Forgot to mention they constantly regenerate. Even when you ship is hit and shields go down to half, they will still regenerate the next 5 second increment.

It regenerates gradually, I'm not certain about rounding.

Shields strength is measured with decimal numbers, not just integers, so rounding shouldn't be an issue (other than the rounding issues inherent in floating point numbers).

What then happens when 3.2 power so-far-charged-shield has to intercept 5 damage missile. Is 1.8 damage send to armor? Or 2 (rounding shield power down to 3) or only 1 (rounding shield power up to 4)? Or is there mathematical rounding so 3.2 power shield can block 3 damage but 3.5 one could block 4?

2 damage is sent to the armor and the shield's hp will be .2 at the end of the increment before recharge.
