After the Fall, Ship Designs
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:19:04 PM »
Federation Battle Fleet
The Federation, at least on the surface and in public, espouses peaceful non-violence, and claims that it only resorts to violence when forced to by regressive throwbacks to an earlier age.  To a certain extent at least some of the Federation’s ruling elite believes this, and thus for the first thirty eight years of its existence the Federation had no armed warships.  Of course, its detractors claim that the reason that the Federation had no warships was not high-minded ideals, but rather that the Federation had no opponents and thus no need for warships.  While the truth is, at the very least, debatable, no one can deny that once the interstellar age began and the Federation Council began feeling a need for an armed force, it was very quick to create the Battle Fleet in spite of its oft repeated ideals.

The Battle Fleet is intended to patrol and protect Federation interests throughout explored space, and to conduct operations against any force that threatens the Federation.  Therefore, Federation naval personnel are all trained to support the Federation’s ground forces while they operate, whether they may be fighting against an as-yet unknown alien race or against insurgents on Earth.

The Belknap is intended to be the flagship of Federation squadrons operating far from home.  For this reason it mounts a flag bridge, making it an ideal platform for an admiral to control his assets.  The original intention was for the Belknap, and indeed all other first generation Federation warships to mount a laser turret, however, research on the turret systems was not complete and the design was rushed into production for political reasons with hull mounted lasers instead.

This design incorporates the Boeing Mod 2 jump drive, which is simultaneously smaller and allows for a larger hull size.  The additional mass is devoted to an increased engineering division, additional missile storage, and increased fuel tankage.  In addition, the class was given some offensive firepower with the inclusion of seventy box launchers for the Federation’s standard ASM.

The Portland class Patrol Cruisers were intended to act independently in scouting missions, as well as fleet support units when the battle cruisers went into action.  The Portland class’s primary asset in both roles was its very large GE SL-1 sensor system, which was capable of detecting ships at up to 693 mkm’s.

As with the Belknap class BCJ’s, this design was originally intended to mount a laser turret, not individual lasers.  Due to the situation, the Council decided to rush this design into production before the laser turrets were ready.

The Burke class was originally intended to carry fewer gunboats and a larger sensor suite, thus justifying the Fleet Scout designation.  The design underwent a number of changes just prior to production, and the gunboat complement was drastically increased forcing capabilities in nearly every other area to be reduced.   Both the design board and the Admiralty were disappointed with this design.

This refit replaces the original Ion drives with larger, more efficient Internal Fusion drives.  The extra space generated by decreasing the tonnage devoted to engines was used to increase the ship’s tankage by nearly 50%, and its engineering department by a similar percentage.

Looking good.

The only concerns/questions I see are:
The Oliver H Perry does not have an AMM Fire Control to go with its 20 AMM Launchers.
How many Engineering Spaces do the Forrestal and Forrestal(S) have? Could you drop 1 and get more range or another layer of armor?

Good catch on the Perry class.  That got by me on the production models and I only realized it once they went into battle.  I remedied it with the Mod B versions.  Fortunately it didn't become an issue in the battle in 40 Eridani.

The Forrestal class has a full-size engineering space, as that was the only engineering system I had available.  I have since researched smaller engineering spaces, but the Federation was focused on big ships, rather than gunboats, as its primary weapon.

I was thinking you might want more speed for that engine tech level.

Hmmm...in general, or on a specific class?  I general end up with the speed distribution I have in this case - gunboats 2x as fast as my DD's/CL's, my DD's/CL's around 50% faster than my capital ships.

Your FACs are nice, but under 4k for your battle cruisers just can't be right, my own ion fleet is standardised at 3750 km/s, they're fuel guzzling beasts, but I imagine one tech level later I could hit 4500 and get more efficiency.

Well, its all down to the percentage of your mass that you are willing to devote to your engines/fuel.  My concept for the Federation capital ships is slow sluggers.  They may not be able to catch the enemy, but if the enemy closes, they will hurt them.  And if the enemy runs, they will be able to reach their objectives without fighting.  Of course, that theory doesn't always work with Steve's automated warships, as they have no  home base to attack to force them to fight, but still, the concept is valid.

I just checked, and the fuel/engine mass percentages for my designs are:

Oliver H. Perry: 27.9%
Belknap: 39.4 (includes jump engine)
Forrestal: 35%
City: 37.5%

I typically devote around 25% of my mass to engines & fuel in battle line units, so the OHP class BC's are a little high for me.
