Mineral Index Rules
« on: November 14, 2014, 02:11:01 PM »
(I'm using the AI2 playtest version from DTRPG)

There seems to be something missing from the minerals section of Planetary Generation (Page 74). It reads like this:
Code: [Select]
Minerals
Each planetary body has a classification for each
of the four mineral categories. These categories
are Heavy Metals, Radioactives, Non-Metallics, and
Industrial Metals. Each classification modifies the
Mineral Index of the planetary body. Gravity will affect
the Mineral Abundance roll. Microgravity subtracts 20
from the roll. Very Light gravity subtracts 10 from the roll.
Low gravity subtracts 5 from the roll. Standard gravity applies
no modifier. High gravity adds 10 to the roll. Very High gravity
adds 20 to the roll. Extreme gravity adds 30 to the roll.

(Mineral Abundance Table)

Minimum values for Rating are 1.
Mineral Indices are added together and used
as a multiplier for the Rating. The Rating is used
in the Exploitation Value.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of mineral categories before or after this, or any mention of how to get the Mineral Index. It seems to indicate that you roll for abundance for each category, but looking at AI Aide and other people's campaigns, this doesn't seem right. There's a good chance I'm just reading this wrong, but in either case clarification would be helpful.

I shouldn't post at 230 in the morning. The planetary type (T, B, V, etc) determines the base MI. The MI is then modified by atmo (currently all 1 ???), and by the roll on the table you pointed out. This gives a total MI that is used as a multiplier to the roll on the mineral's value.

That clears up a lot, but what is the roll for a mineral's value? Like I said, this is the first and only time mineral categories are mentioned, and there isn't anything that seems to say how to get them.

After a quick Google search, I think it might have been explained in the original AI, from the sentence fragments I got from Google.

So if you have a type T planet, with an oxygen atmosphere, your MI is 5 (tables 115 and 119). Now on table 122, you roll percentile for each category (Heavy Metals, Radioactives, Non-metallic, and Industrial). This gives you a range of 5.25 to 7 depending on the roll. You roll the rating, lets say the percentile was a result of Normal. Your MI is 6, and the rating is 1d10+5. Those values are multiplied together.
