Building captured ships
« on: June 08, 2011, 09:25:26 PM »
So I captured a Swarm Queen.  It didn't go down particularly cleanly, because I fought it in a level 8 nebula next to my home system.  It's pretty funny when the soldiers are slower than the mothership.

I prepared a suitably large shipyard beforehand, which I intended to use to repair the captured ship, and then disassemble the components for tech.  I noticed that even though the design shows up in the class design window, you can't build it, which seemed reasonable as the ship isn't really a valid ship.  Then I pressed the copy design button, and suddenly I can build my own Star Swarm, I just need to get my hands on a worker and a soldier.

Of course I can't add more components of tech I don't have, but I can see that I could potentially build more of these components for risk free tech disassembly.  It's not entirely free, as I think I won't get back the minerals, and of course there's the wealth spent.  Is this a legitimate strategy?

On another note, how do I use salvaged components in my own ships? There are these delicious strength 2000 passives inside the mothership that I really want to mount onto a surveillance ship.

A FAC blew up when I shot it with microwaves.  Is it a bug?

Did the various advanced tech components show in your race components list(cntl-F7)?  It sounds like the answer is no, in which case you should not be able to build the design without having pre-built/salvaged parts stockpiled.

I suggest reporting this as a bug.

More detail is needed.

What are the game log entries?

Oh haha I didn't actually try to add a shipyard task for the queen.   I just tried it and it told me that I can't build ships with components that I can't build and don't have stockpiled.   Whoops false alarm :P I guess I could use the copy design to make a ship designed to use captured components.   Hmm but what if I had salvaged components from a wreck? How would I go about putting them into my own ships?

Log entry from the first salvo which took out the engine, which surprised me.   I thought the AI was trying to trick me.

Other hits.   Ironically when the active sensor, the bit I was trying to damage, blew up, the ship was destroyed.

I'm guessing that it is either a bug, or I am mistaken about how microwaves work.  I thought they would only damage electronic components.

It's more likely a special feature of the way Star Swarm units work.  Since they're living creatures, I think you fried its brain.
