Homogenized Ships of the Terran Confederation
« on: November 19, 2012, 09:56:04 PM »
In the summer of the year 2080 the Terran Confederation began a large-scale modernization of its fleet. At the time over two dozen classes of warship were in service, with many filling overlapping roles, and the committee responsible for the modernization decided to make some changes. Thus efforts began to streamline the fleet into only a handful of ship types with as many interchangeable parts as possible to cut costs and streamline logistics. All new combat ships would be designed to integrate into a carrier task force, and with the goal to operate for one year without ground-based support facilities. Ultimately four main combatants were designed, and the first new ships began to roll off the production lines within the decade. The new face of the fleet has so far proved promising.

The first decision reached by the committee was to fold all existing point and area defense ships into a single class, and to do away with the old mixture of overlapping guns and missiles for protection. Relying entirely on the new Star Hawk anti-missile missile to bring down incoming birds, the River class Area Defense Cruiser was designed to protect the fleet's carriers during limited engagements against high volumes of enemy ordinance. It would also serve in a limited capacity as a rescue ship should the need arise, with the ability to hold up to 400 rescued sailors or prisoners in cryogenic suspension. As of July 2095 18 Rivers are in service with the TCN.

The Trafalgar class Command Ship is the true heart of a modern TCN task force. The primary goal of the design was to provide a task force commander with a flagship capable of gathering information on enemy dispositions and coordinating friendly formations from the very front. To achieve this each Trafalgar sports a massive set of sensors, a thick armor belt, two banks of shield emitters, a flag bridge, and a jump drive capable of launching 104-thousand tonnes of metal between the stars. The class also carries a set of 15 dual-mounted gauss turrets for both supplementary missile defense and emergency action against close-range enemy craft. The Trafalgars are the eyes, ears, brains, and even legs of the fleet. Three of these ships are currently in service: Trafalgar, Salamis, and Midway.

At the time of the fleet revitalization project there were two classes of carrier in service with the TCN; a jump-capable escort carrier and a larger fleet carrier which required jump gates. With the planned addition to the fleet of the Trafalgar class, the decision was made to abandon the line of escort carriers and focus solely on the large fleet carriers. The result was the Ragnarok class, a one-hundred-thousand tonne fleet carrier designed for heavy combat duties. With its cavernous hangar deck and immense magazine space a Ragnarok carrier possesses the fuel and ammunition to launch its compliment of 60 Venom class Fighter-Bombers at an enemy fleet half a dozen times before needing to return to base to rearm. The Ragnaroks also carry a small compliment of 10 Bandit class Interceptor/Superiority Fighters to defend against enemy fighters. Two Ragnaroks are assigned to the task force of each Trafalgar.

The Warrior -B class Armored Cruiser is the only one of the four modern naval combatants to have an obvious predecessor, and also the only one to not operate with a carrier group. Conceived in its original form following the debacle at Beta Hydri, where a single enemy vessel massing only an estimated 8000 tonnes ambushed a transiting TCN task force and destroyed almost five times its own tonnage before being brought down, the Warriors serve the role of assault ships in the TCN. The original Warrior class utilized large numbers of gauss cannons, whereas the newly designed -B variant carries harder-hitting railguns. The Warriors are designed to transit through hostile jump points, survive the environment on the other side, and clear the surrounding area of enemies in preparation for the arrival of the carriers. To accomplish this daunting task, the Warriors sacrifice on crew comforts and longevity in exchange for the thickest armor and heaviest direct firepower of any Terran vessel.

How do you intend to use the Warrior -B? Do they jump with a Trafalgar and use its sensors?

Are your engines internal or inertial fusion?
Fun Fact: The minimum engine power of any ship engine in Aurora C# is 0.01. The maximum is 120000!

Inertial.

And yeah, the Warriors would join a carrier group already sitting on a gate and perform a squadron jump with the group's Trafalgar. And when (if?) that goes south for the first time I'll make the next iteration of the class. Trying to keep fairly in-character about how I design the ships.

Neat designs.   Do you think the carriers seem a little frail? Esp for such a heavy tonnage?

They are, but they're not meant to ever be within 1b km of anything hostile. And with six of the AMM cruisers floating next to them and their CAP fighters I generally feel pretty safe except when jumping into a new system.
