Title: Extended Orbit order
Post by: Madzak on March 31, 2012, 07:43:03 PM
Hello,
what is the purpose of the Extended Orbit order?

(Fuel harvesters and mining freighters work fine with the move to order, so I cannot figure out when\why to issue the Extended orbit order).

One reason: so you can be out of range of enemy PDC weapons and/or sensors

Thanks you.
My planetary assault experience is still missing, before i could figure it out I would have been decimated during my first invasion attempt!

In extended orbit you will circle the target planet at the distance you specify. So if you chose a 500,000 km extended orbit of Earth for example, you would orbit Earth at twice the distance of the Moon.

Thanks,
I was wondering if the distance from the planet will affect the fuel consumption of the orbiting ship.
Standard orbiting ships do not use fuel at all.

Ships in extended orbit don't use fuel. The speed at which they orbit is based on the mass of the body they are orbiting and the distance of their orbit.

Extended orbit has several RP aspects as well, but otherwise isn't used for much.

I've used it the most in a multi-race conventional Earth start. In the early game, ships were orbiting outside the range of potentially hostile planetary-based missile launchers (10-15m km orbits)

Necro?

I use extended orbit as a noob to rest my crew as they appear to go on shore leave for 10 days or so, cannot see any other way to rest my crews.
I'll add that I have not yet left the Sol system.

Just use Move To for a population of at least 10,000. You don't need extended orbit.

I've used it for 'Space Subs'.  3000 tons with 75% cloak, orbiting at 90mkm, which would require a 90mkm res 15 active scanner to lock onto.  Virtually no passive signature, and barely need targeting systems or engines. They're only really useful in a multi-player race game.
