Suddenly, there is a jump point

Hi,

have read in some of the Fictions that it can happen that going through a new jump point might end up in an already surveyed system, adding a new jump point there. Is that a function Aurora provides or some SpaceMaster-thingy...?

Both, the game makes the conections  and you can use SM and make new ones, even connect them to already surveyed systems.

Every system has a 'system number', between 0 and the designated system # max for the game. (Real stars doesnt accept system max limits.)   When you enter a jumppoint, the game makes a roll to pick a system number. If its a currently unused #, it generates a new system and connects you to a jump point  in it. If it's the number of an existing system, it connects you to a jump point in it- unless there are no available jump points, in which case it generates a new jump point.  If enemy ships show up where none should be, you may need to re-survey that system (using the function in the f9 screen to erase your existing survey progress. You get to keep the location of already-known jump points.)

So, as more systems get explored in a game, there's less and less unexplored system #s and therefore an increasing likelihood of connecting to an existing system with a 'closed' jump point.

There's a bias towards unexplored systems when it picks a number though, IIRC.

When you jump through an unexplored jumppoint, the game picks a random system for it to go to. Usually it will lead to a system you've never seen before, in which case it generates a new system right then. It then picks a random jump point in that new system for the current jump point to lead to.

But there's nothing to prevent it from picking a system you have been to before, even if that system has no unexplored jumppoints. In this case it will create a new jumppoint to connect to. The in-game explanation for this is that the jumppoint had been dormant.

Note that if you have any NPRs in the game, then they are likely exploring jumppoints as well. Any one of these jumppoints could lead to any of the systems you've explored, causing a new jumppoint to be created. If you suspect that this has happened, you can search for the "dormant" jumppoint by setting all of the jumppoint survey locations back to unsurveyed. Your gravsurvey craft will then be able to re-do the survey and find the new jumppoint.

And of course you could do the same thing to an NPR as well.

Interesting function. Like it. Although an option at game start to choose if "random" new jump points should occur might be interesting.
