Shattered Sol - Prologue and Setup
« on: January 22, 2013, 08:10:43 AM »
The year is 2109, the age of space exploration. After the disastrous events of 1995, when 90% of the population has died in the nuclear war, the future is finally bright again.
Earth is not the same though. The old minor nation-states joined the New United Nations in 2078, but they represent a minor power. The Superpowers of the 20th century are nonexistent. North America, China and the major part of Russia is a nuclear wasteland. In the space the United Nations are represented by the International Space Agency, but with the limited resources of the UN the ISA is forced to play only second fiddle in the exploration of space.
After the discovery of the Trans-Newtonian technology in 2092, the bright prospects of exploration and profit attracted the attention of civilian corporations who took the opportunity to establish themselves in space.
The first one was led by the young and charismatic Alex Storm, CEO of the Storm Industries, but more private corporations were founded. The Gensei Syndicate, Astrocorp, Graviton and many more. And as the laws of business dictate, the big fish swallow the small ones, peacefully or with weapons.
So after a few years of cooperation the corporations decided to solve their problems with arms. The UN called for the cessation of hostilities, but they only managed to enact one law accepted by all corporations, the hostility-free zone. The Zone encircled the inner system, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, the first colony of Humankind. No weapon was allowed to be fired in this 250m km wide zone, so it was not uncommon that corporation ships shooting at each other in the outer system returned to the same planet to rest and resupply, Mars.
2106 was the year of the Great Recession. The financial situation of the UN was terrible and in hope to save the economy the Grand Council decided to withdraw from Mars, which was considered as a monetary black hole.
In 2107 the UN was in dire need of Money, so they decided to sold their share of the Martian colony to the megacorporations for 200m credits. The highest bidders were the Storm Industries and the Gensei Syndicate. Both megacorporations had their small colonies on Mars before, but they were used only as maintenance and refueling stations for corporation ships.

One year later both the Storm Industries and the Gensei Syndicate reported terrible news. Terrible for the UN. They found underground ruins during a routine geological survey of the former UN territory. The exact number of the alien installations is unknown, yet...

Setup:

International Space Agency – President Taylor Harrison

Wealth: 210m Credits (21000)

The equipment of the ISA is a little bit obsolete and the money the UN received was spent on the stabilisation of the economy and not on the development and construction of new spaceships. With no access to the Martian ruins the ISA can't expect any future leap in technology, altough there are 8 research labs on Earth.
The only good feature of the ISA is the manpower. The population of Earth in 2109 is 410m. The relationship of the ISA with the megacorporations is friendly, but the Agency will try to stop any hostile conflict between them with negotiations, and any fight within the Zone will lead to hard policy and eventually to an armed intervention.

The Storm Industries – CEO Alex Storm

Wealth: 1b credits (100,000)

The Storm Industies is one of the major powers in the Space Race. Their equipment is superior to the ISA and is on par with  the Gensei Syndicate. Their ships are unique in utilizing shielding systems and their main beam weapon is the Meson Cannon. The Storm Industries has good relations with the ISA, but a little bit bad relations with the Gensei Syndicate. Has 10 research labs on Mars.

The Gensei Syndicate – CEO Tanenaka Reiko

Wealth: 1b Credits (100,000)

The Gensei Syndicate is a giant conglomerate of the Asian corporations of the late 21st century. They were the second ones after the Storm Industries who established themselves in space. Their technology is on par with the Storm Industries, but are specialized on electronics and were the first ones who incorporated ECM systems in their ship designs. The Navy of the Syndicate relies heavily on missile systems. Their defense is built around Anti-Missiles and CIWS.  Like the other factions they use beam armed ships too, which are equipped with particle beams.
Their main tactic is secrecy. The leadership of the Syndicate decided that by parking the main fleet at Mars they reveal the composition and features of their ships, so they decided to establish a hidden base on Titan, which serves as the Fleet HQ, resupply and maintenance base. They did not colonise Titan however, but instead built a giant base hidden in the shadow of the moon, New Tokyo the wonder of modern engineering. It has no thermal or EM signatures which would reveal a colony. Its only detectable with active sensors. New ship need to be built on Mars though. Saturn was declared a corporate property on 1st January 2109.

So i gave all the factions roughly the same amount of ships. The jump point theory will be researched after one of the factions will be eliminated, then i will continue to explore the universe with two factions. So any bets who will be eliminated first?  :)

If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.

If fire fighters fight fire and crime fighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight?

I hope the ISA dies ingloriously.  Corporate rule in space is a fantastic concept.

Will see. :) The Storm Industries have andvantage in engine technology and will be most likely the first ones to develop the nuclear pulse engine. The Gensei have advantage in electronics and use composite armour. The ISA ... well. :D But has the most population. :)
I will really enjoy RP-ing for Alex Storm. He's a mixture of Tony Stark from the Ironman and Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg from the Fifth Element. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krcNIWPkNzA

Huh.  As things stand, storm can smash ISA and gensei sequentially, given full knowledge of their ships.  On the other hand, the ISA's economic advantage will be massive in a decade or so, if they live that long.

The question becomes: Are the corporations willing to attack earth? Winning a ground war after capturing earth orbit should be fairly easy, granting whichever corp attacks first a major advantage.  Of course, the other corp would be less than willing to let this happen.  Given that the ISA is friendlier, the treaty will probably last until two factions ally.  The next question is, which two?

The Storm has its disadvantages too. Their ships consume a huge amount of fuel compared to the other two factions.
Well I think the ISA will attack only if being attacked first or if one of the factions will fire any weapon within the Zone. The Zone is there to protect populated planets from accidents(i.e. sombody fires a nuke and then it accidentally hits Mars or Earth). With the zone there it would not be impossible to retreat behind it after a combat if the commander of the TG feels its the only viable option to preserve his ships. Then it will be on the attacker if he will respect the Zone. :)

I'm thinking the Gensei will stay in the race, and probably the ISA will be first out. Missile weapons are simply too good in Aurora as long as enough are delivered on target at the same time to get hits through.

I'm not going to start the war right away, i will wait for any "accident", that may trigger it and can give the attacker a casus belli. More factions may join in after a time. I'm messing around with an idea, but let it be a surprise. :)
