Prussian Navy - good enough for WH spoilers?
« on: May 07, 2013, 02:57:43 PM »
Hi,

in my resent game I have already meet a couple of WH-spoiler race ships, but always just two of them at a time was basically able to beat them by expending all of the missiles of one of my (carrier) task forces against them.

Now one of my jumpships entered a new system and was promptly blown to pieces by 7 WH-spoiler ships (mainly missile based it seems, the previous once were beam beased which surely did help in getting rid of them).

Any idea if my current navy (shown below) should be able to handle 7 of those spoiler ships?

The Königlich Preussische Marine (KPM - Royal Prussian Navy) is largely carrier based, but essentially the carriers are just glorified mobile hangars.  The only exception is the flagship of each taskforce (currently there are 2 taskforces with a 3rd under construction).

Carrier based fighters:

Since only the Bismarcks have active sensors (which are usually turned off) the KPM relies on small recon craft to provide target information.  Depending on the enemy they will either stay on their carriers or join/follow the fighters/bombers towards the enemy.  Currently there are 3 different recon planes (based on range).

The fighters are either used as missile protection for the fleet/bombers or to finish of heavily damaged enemies ships or unarmed transports.  The beam fighters should be able to keep the other spoiler race in check (have not meet them in this game yet) and attack ground troups on low atmoshpere planets (took quite some shots - at 1 damage each -  but it did work fairly well in the end).

Each taskforce has usually 2 tankers and 2 colliers following around (at a speed of just 3k) and those will stay on the safe side of a jump-point/gate to provide resupply.

As can be seem there are no jumpships here - actually the only jump capable class in the KPM is the 6k ton Berlin explorer, mainly used to explore new jump points and also being used as a search and rescue ship at a speed of 6. 7k and with a 1,000 cryo bay.

4 jump gate builers (in addition to the helpfull NPRs) are essentially providing all the gates I could even want.

But this poses some real problems if the jump-exit is guarded by enemy ships (like it is the case now).

Normally the KPM has 2 special ships to deal with those defenders.  First (mainly used if beam based enemies are expected is the Drone, a a fast decent armored fighter who's job it is to lure the enemies away for the jump exit, thus enableing the taskforce to jump into the system without facing initial opposition till the sensors/weapons are back online).

The active sensor is both for taking a look around and to lure enemies which might be close to the jump-point to close the range/attack.  Essentially - as the name Drone implies - those fighters are fast/cheap to build and considered expendable.  Each taskforce has 2 of those.

For missile based/larger/more advanced opponents there is a heavier version of the Drone which is usually not part of the taskforce but called whenever needed.  The current situation with the WH-spoilers  camping at the other side of the gate and being missile based will have me use those.

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes
It should be able to outrun most large beam ships and its heavy armor might allow it to survive a couple of hits from normal missiles (most likely not from my spoiler friends).  Vs.  the spoilers I will most likely use 2 heavy and 2 light drones, hoping to pull away any beam ships and buying my main fleet enough time to fire their missiles and either stay in system or jump back to safety once the missile have hit.

I would appreciate any comments on those designs and especially if you think that 1 or (more likely) 2 of those CTFs might have a chance vs.  those 7 WH-spoiler ships.  Since they seem to be largely missile based I am fairly optimistic actually (due to the fairly large number of anti-missile ships/fighters), but just 2 beam based ships - or backup beams on those missile ships - could quickly ruin my day.

Hi i am not very experience but i have met a similar situation before, form what i see you should be ale to take down the enermy but you might take some heavy damage. Your pd missile ship is equip to take down most mid-long range missle but i think your gauss ship need more fc to hadle all those turret also you might need a sensor on board too. Your beam bomber/fighter will most likely be shot down by amm if you try apporch the enermy so that might not be extreme effective. Also you might want to armor up your fighters abit so they wont be shot down by amms.

Generally fighters aren't armored because
1. They're pretty cheap
2. Their main advantage is that they're small and fast
This applies for bomber fighters as well.

Now for your ships. The carriers seem good, though you might want some more armor or shields. The fuel isn't very good. Remember that you are also stocking fuel for the strike group and you won't always have a tanker nearby when the enemy appears. Your destroyers and cruisers seem fine.

Might be wrong on the fuel thing. Haven't used carriers since 6.0.

Are we realy talking about wormhole aliens (i.e. Invaders) or regular spoilers (i.e. Precursors)?

Against Precursors, your setup should do fine, against Invaders (though I have not played with them since 6.0) you will get your head handed to you.

Yes, Invaders are insanely powerful at low/mid tech level.

Thx for the feedback.

Concerning the additional FC for the gauss ship - I was under the (potentially wrong) impression that for final defensive fire it does not matter which flight the missiles were originally from, the weapons will target all enemy missiles even if they only have one fire control.   Is this correct, or will my gauss turrets basically be limited to engaging just 1 flight of missiles?

Fuel has not been a problem yet, but before entering a system where I will most likely face enemies I usually wait for my tankers/colliers to catch up to top up my fuel/ordonance.   But having had no problems might be due to me essentially waiting for the enemies to come to me instead of seeking them.   This might not be possible all the time, but at the moment my main problem is that I can't see where to make some room for extra fuel/armor.

Armor is actually a bigger worry for me at the moment.   With the "fighter combat bug" all my fighters are basically guaranteed to kill tons of missiles (600% to-hit chance before wepon modifications are fairly common), due to this usually none of my main ships is even getting a dent in its armor (except for the bug I keep running into where some of the fighters in a flight will not fire on approaching missiles while others in the same squad do shoot).

But with both - fuel and armor - the only way I see at the moment would be to lower speed in order to make some room here and I am not sure if this is worth it - any ideas?

And concerning the aliens, yes, WH aliens for sure, I met the regular spoilers earlier, giving me a decent tech boost (essentially my 4 salvagers were providing more tech than my labs ;) ).   This is in-game year 13 with a 1 billion pop and 40 labs start, internal fusion research is about to be completed, I would never have gotten there this fast without my regular spoiler friends ;)

edit: internal, not inertial fusion. . .  ;)

Just a quick comment: The die has been cast - at least concerning the attack.  .  .

I am currently gathering my 2 CTFs.   Basically I am hoping that being able to launch 450 S6 - warhead 9 - missiles at once while the fleet is being defended by 480 gauss cannons and 120 AMMs every 10sec  should buy me enough time to get a better picture about the WH's capabilities against my fleet, with likely beam ships being primary targets.

The main question will most likely be if the drones give me enough time to get weapons/sensors back online.   Once they are back up I am fairly confident that enemy missiles will not be the problem, but I will stay at the jump-point and jump out if things start going south.   And even if a couple of ships (most likely fighters) are lost, most of them would have been replaced due to the new engines anyway (with the rest getting stationed as plantary defenders).

In addition attacking might have the additional advantage of getting rid of the annoying "overflow" errors which are most likely caused by my WH-friends from what I read here on the froums.

Fraid you're mistaken - if you have only 1 F/C then only 1 salvo of missiles will be targeted, and not necessarily the biggest - i don't recall the priority in selecting missile groups to fire at, but I have a sneaking suspicion that its done in the order that the missiles move.

I have used this to good effect against your expected opponents, where a group of bombers launched a number of single missile salvos (siz 20 Planetary Defence Missiles IIRC)  against them and only one or two missiles were intercepted in the final fire stage before impact.  This was in a previous version (v4.?) so the recent changes may have invalidated this tactic.

But with both - fuel and armor - the only way I see at the moment would be to lower speed in order to make some room here and I am not sure if this is worth it - any ideas?
If your not going to have to chase your opponents, then yes drop the fleet speed a little - perhaps to 3500 kms-1
I really wouldn't bother with armouring the drones though - in general their high speed is a better defence.
Slàinte,

Mike

The battle went smoother than anticipated, when my first heavy drone entered the system the WHs even started to move away from it, with just 1 heavy and 2 normal drones lost my fleet was able to enter the system with the enemy far enough away for the sensors/waepons to come online and not a single of the missiles managed to penetrate the PD.

After some salvage and research this is what the KPM's CTFs are currently being refitted to (incorporating some of the suggestions here):

Overall I tried to get enough fuel for 50 days now with shields in addition to the armor, shield tech is still fairly low, but research on Delta Shields will be finished in around 3 months with a better recharge rate about 3 months after that.

I am currently working on a dedicated longer range beam destroyer or cruiser, but with not having really focused on lasers/recharge tech it will take some time, but those should come in handy for higher level atmossphere bombardments and area defense.

Any input about potential improvements is appreciated :)
