United States of Terra

Background
In the closing days of the Great War, a strange vessel crashed in the deserts of the United States of America. The government under Woodrow Wilson was quick to silence any reports from this crash. Over the next ten years, American scientists researched the vessel to learn what they might from it. In 1932, the Americans built and launched their own home-built ship based on technologies found in the wreck. By 1940, most of the world had come under the umbrella of the United States of Terra. In 1947, the USTN launched their first ship aimed to discover the ?warp gates? that the records of the crashed vessel decades before hinted at.

1st Jan 1947
While the 1st Exploratory Fleet under command of Commodore Heath Badon sets off to survey the solar system, plans for a second exploration fleet and an armed defense fleet are laid down.

1st Feb 1947
Plans for improving the range of our beam fire control continue. Scientists at Oxford and MIT think by the end of March, they will be able to provide a 60% increase in control range. Keels are laid down for 6 more Essex class science vessels. These vessels are slated for the 2nd Exploratory.

1st Mar 1947
Research and construction proceeds as planned. A brief message from Commodore Badon states that they are nearly 10% done with the ?gravitational? survey of the system.

1st Apr 1947
Dr. Abelard of Oxford announced early last month that the project for improved fire control range was complete. The President instructs him to focus on improving our high resolution thermal sensors, as they are less capable that the gravitational pulse sensors. He also lays out a plan for research which includes armoring internal components, improving armor overall, and electronic warfare.

1st May 1947
Research, construction and exploration proceeds as planned. Commodore Badon reports he is nearly 20% complete with his gravitational survey. The decision is made that the 2nd Exploratory will concentrate first on planetary bodies, rather than the gravitational surveys.

1st Jun 1947
The newly formed Science Directorate announces that the project to improve the strength of the high resolution thermal sensors has been completed. Updated information from the Bureau of Vessel Construction shows that the four Lexington class destroyers for the Terra Defense fleet will be finished in early September, while the Essex vessels in late November.

1st Jul 1947
Various projects proceed as planned. Nothing new is announced.

1st Aug 1947
As there are four deep space tracking installations, (based in North America, Europe, mainland China, and the Africa continent), and only 75 missile silos, plans are laid to construct an additional 125 silos, providing 50 for each station.

1st Sep 1947
All plans are proceeding as normal. The first armed ships of the United States of Terra should be launched in the next week. The Revenue Service notifies the President that the various research and construction projects are draining the treasury rapidly. At current spending levels, the treasury will be empty in another two years. The Science Directorate is instructed to look into ways to increase the per capita revenue.

1st Oct 1947
The Terra Defense fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Adolfo Bausman is launched and held in a close orbit around Earth. The ships slated for 2nd Exploratory are still planned for a late November launch.

1st Nov 1947
The Science Directorate informs the President that their project to increase per capita revenue should be finished by the end of November. The Bureau of Vessel Construction holds to their promise of mid-November for the Essex class ships. A message is received from Commodore Badon. He is nearly 50% done with his gravitational survey.

   21st Nov 1947
The 2nd Exploratory Fleet under the command of Captain Taylor Sturgell is launched. They proceed to scan nearby planets and moons for usable minerals.

1st Dec 1947
The Science Directorate lays out plans for the coming year. Their planned projects include an armor made of a newly developed composite, electronic warfare, improving tracking speed of turrets, an increase in jump drive efficiency allowing for smaller jump engines, and an improvement in railgun launch velocities.

Captain Sturgell reports that Venus is home to approximately 18 million tons of Tritanium and 16 million tons of Mercassium. (Note from the Science Directorate: The mineral names are translations of minerals found in the alien ship?s database. Other minerals include Duranium, Neutronium, Corbomite, Boronide, Vendarite, Sorium, Uridium, Corundium, and Gallicite.) Research projects continue as do the construction plans of the additional missile silos.

1st Feb 1948
Captain Sturgell reports that Mercury has substantial deposits of Duranium, Neutronium, Sorium and Uridium. Research projects proceed as planned and Commodore Badon is nearing 66% completion of his survey efforts. Orders are cut for him to finish and return to Earth for refueling and any supply needs he may have.

1st Mar 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Apr 1948
Science Directorate reports they?ve developed their composite armor. Plans for electronic warfare have begun development.

1st Aug 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Sep 1948
The Science Directorate finished with electronic warfare and begins to improve the tracking speed of turrets. At the President?s direction, they are instructed to move ECM and ECCM components to the beginning of the queue. Commodore Badon has completed his survey and has found 2 jump points. 1st Exploratory will refuel at Earth and then head to jump point #1. Per decision made early last year, newly discovered systems (if any) will bear the names of American cities.

1st Oct 1948
Commodore Badon sends his ships through the jump point. On the far side he finds a system with three stars and a half dozen planets, one of which might be considered habitable (if one were an Inuit). At the request of the Survey Command, the Science Directorate looks for means to improve survey sensors. These projects will be time consuming and take place after the ECCM project. The Bureau of Vessel Construction looks into ways to improve the performance of the current survey ships. BuVess puts forward the following design.
Code: [Select]
Essex B class Science Vessel    4500 tons     430 Crew     1149 BP      Signature 90-180
2000 km/s    JR 3-50     Armour 1     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/0/4/4     Damage Control 0-0
Replacement Parts 10

J4500(3-50) Jump Drive     Max Ship Size 4500 tons    Distance 50k km     Squadron Size 3
Ion Engine EE0.7 AR-0 (3)    Power 60    Engine Efficiency 0.70    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 150,000 Litres    Range 205.7 billion km   (1190 days at full power)

Improved Geological Sensors (2)   4 Survey Points
Improved Gravitational Sensors (2)   4 Survey Points

For a reduction in replacement parts, and using the new composite armors, the number of sensors can be doubled. Orders are sent to Captain Sturgell to bring his fleet in for refit to the new class.

1st Nov 1948
Captain Sturgell drops into orbit around Earth. His six ships are immediately taken into the yards for refit. BuVess estimates completion of the refits by early April 1949.

1st Dec 1948
Research, refits and construction all proceed as planned.

1st Apr 1949
Due to a shortage in Uridium, one of Captain Sturgell?s ships will not be finished in the coming week. Priority is given to his ships for minerals.

1st May 1949
Five of Captain Sturgell?s six ships are freed from the shipyards refit to Essex B class. The final ship should be finished within the week. Two Enterprise class scouts are laid down and assigned to Terra Defense Fleet. These two ships should be ready by early October.

1st Jun 1949
The final ship of the 2nd Exploratory is released from the yards and Captain Sturgell resumes his survey of the planetary bodies.

1st Aug 1949
Research has been completed on the ECCM units. The Science Directorate takes up investigating advanced geological sensors. This project is estimated to be finished in late 1952. The Science Directorate puts forward that ?perhaps an increase in viable research facilities should take place?.

1st Sep 1949
After consideration, plans for ten additional research units are drawn up. This work will begin after the remaining six missile silos are finished.

1st Nov 1949
The missile silos have been completed. Each tracking station now commands the fire of 50 silos. This is seen as sufficient for now. Work begins on the additional research labs for the Science Directorate. The Antwerp and Barcelona scout ships finish construction also. They join the four Lexingtons in the Terra Defense fleet. Four waypoints are plotted outside of the inner system. The first two are near the jump point and the other two are on the other side of the system. Vice Admiral Bausman is ordered to take his fleet on two circuits of the waypoints on a patrol mission.

That first paragraph sounds like it came from the movie "My Science Project". Which has some funny moments if you can locate it in the rental stores. It starts with President Eisenhauer telling the Air Force to "get rid of it" when they tell him they have a wrecked alien ship.

Heh. I've seen that... ages ago. I was going for a twist on the Roswell crash actually.

« Reply #7 on: June 19, 2007, 11:56:21 AM »
1st Apr 1950
The 1st Exploratory enters Earth orbit and is taken into the yards for refit to Essex B class. One of the Science Directorate?s new facilities comes on line and they revise their estimate from August 1952 to late 1951/early 1952 once all the new facilities are online. Survey Command and BuVess engage in talks to design two new classes of survey ships, specialized designs for geological surveys and gravitational surveys. The decision on this is shelved until 1955 at the earliest, when both new survey systems are planned to be operational.

1st Nov 1950
Due to a momentary Uridium shortage, three of Commodore Badon?s ships are out of the yards. The other three are scheduled to be out this month. Once all six are out, he will resume his survey of Washington.

1st Jan 1951
The Senate proposes construction of a ?Sector Command? facility. This facility would allow close governing of systems outside of the Terran system. It is scheduled behind the research facilities and XT Infrastructure.

1st Mar 1951
The Long Haul freighters are scheduled to be done later this month. BuVess shows 15 million liters of fuel in reserve, so the decision is made to shut down the refineries until March 1952, or a reserve of 10 million liters, whichever occurs first.

1st Apr 1951
Despite 3 new research labs online, Science Directorates running estimates of when the first advanced sensor will be available holds steady around Aug/Sep 1952.

1st May 1951
Five Long Haul class freighters emerge from the yards. This leaves just the five Ark colonizers in the yards which should be done sometime in the fall. The Admirality has promoted Commodore Badon to Rear Admiral for his tireless work with the 1st Exploratory.

1st Jun 1951
The Survey Service seems to be the place for rapid promotion as Captain Sturgell of the 2nd Exploratory is promoted to Commodore.

1st Aug 1951
Another research facility is brought online for the Science Directorate. This brings their total to 34, with six more being worked on.

1st Dec 1951
The five Ark class colonizers emerge from the yards.

1st Jan 1952
Admiral Badon sends a ship through the warp point to transmit the findings of his gravitational survey of the Washington system. Washington has five points, including the one to Sol. With Washington A-IV a somewhat habitable planet, plans are made to construct infrastructure for the first extra-solar colony. His message also includes the suggestion that a number of small, fast courier ships be attached to the survey fleets for communications. BuVess strips the weaponry and related hardware from an Enterprise class scout, increases the engines and adds a jump drive. The new class is christened Eagle, and plans are made to attach three Eagles to each Survey fleet. Discussions with Survey Command over removing the jump drives from the survey ships ensues. No decision on that subject is reached.
Code: [Select]
Eagle class Scout    6000 tons     562 Crew     931 BP      Signature 120-420
3500 km/s    JR 3-50     Armour 1     Shields 4-300     Sensors 3/6/0/0     Damage Control 1-1

Ion Engine EE0.7 AR-0 (7)    Power 60    Engine Efficiency 0.70    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 150,000 Litres    Range 154.3 billion km   (510 days at full power)
Alpha R300/7 Shields (4)   Total Fuel Cost  28 Litres per day

High Resolution Thermal Sensor HRT3-3 (1)     Strength 3     Detect Signature 100: 3m km
Gravitational Pulse Sensor GP3-6 (1)     Strength 6     Detect Size 100: 6m km
Grav Pulse Detection Sensor PD3-6 (1)     Strength 6     Detect Strength 10: 60m km

The six Eagles under construction should be finished in late 1952.

1st Nov 1952
The 2nd Exploratory finishes their refit and head towards the other unexplored warp point in the Sol system.

1st Dec 1952
The 1st Exploratory hits Earth orbit and enters the yards for overhaul. The overhaul will take long enough that the first three Eagles will be ready to be attached to the fleet.

1st Feb 1953
The first six Eagles exit the yards. The Dover, Cherbourg and Cologne will be assigned to 1st Exploratory, while the Birmingham, Belfast and Berlin are assigned to the 2nd.

1st Mar 1953
Advanced Geological sensors have been developed by the Science Directorate, merely 6 months behind schedule and vastly over budget. They begin work on comparable gravitational sensors, promising to be on time and under budget this time. On a sadder note, Admiral Badon suffered a heart attack while his ships were in port. He is recovering nicely and expected to return to duty by the time his ships are free of the yards.

1st Aug 1953
The Cargo fleet begins operations to move infrastructure and automated mines to Washington A-IV. The plan calls for 6 such trips before the Arks begin moving colonists. The decision is the first few waves of colonists will be primarily from less developed regions of the Earth.

1st Dec 1953
With plans for the Washington colony proceeding satisfactorily, the decision is made to begin construction of an overall sector command center. Science Directorate is not happy as this decision pushes their remaining facilities further behind schedule. Captain Lucila Grothoff is tapped as the governor for the Washington colony. The Colony fleet is sent to Washington with Captain, Governor Grothoff and sufficient staff and family to start.

1st Feb 1954
Governor Grothoff lands amongst the bare structure of her new command and begins the task of organizing the colony. In related news, the construction of the sector command facility begins. Admiral Badon finishes geological surveys of a couple outlying solar moons. He heads for Earth to refuel, and then to proceed to Washington to explore WP 1. BuVess draws up plans for a Geode class geological survey ship. Once the advanced gravitational sensors are done, a similar gravitational survey vessel will be planned.

1st Jun 1954
Governor Grothoff receives her first shipment of automated mines. The mines? efforts verify Admiral Badon?s survey report. Washington A-IV has approximately 12.5 million tons of Tritanium, 9.5 million tons of Boronide, 23 million tons of Sorium, and almost 5 million tons of Corundium. With the lack of other basic minerals, such as Duranium, the decision is made to shift some fuel refineries to Washington A-IV and start production of fuel. This will leave Earth?s more limited supply of the mineral for other purposes. The first load of colonists (outside of Gov. Grothoff?s staff) names Washington A-IV to New Alexandria.

1st July 1954
The sector command facility has been completed. Fleet Admiral Hai Howlin becomes the sector commander. With substantial deposits of Duranium, a second cargo fleet is organized. As this fleet is meant to operate solely in the confines of the Sol system, a new design for a freighter is required. BuVess decides on the Short Haul design.

This design is classed as a freighter for maintenance purposes
The first run of Short Hauls should be finished early to mid 1955.

1st Aug 1954
The 2nd Exploratory finishes their survey of New York. The system has 4 jump points. They head back to Sol for a refuel and the on to Washington?s 2nd unexplored point.

1st May 1955
The Short Hauls have completed construction and are assigned to InSys Transport. The first mission will be to transfer 60 automated mines to Titan.

1st July 1955
Commodore Clifford Moskal is assigned as governor of the Titan colony. He brings many years of experience with mining operations to his new job. The decision is made to move 500 units of infrastructure to Titan also.

1st Dec 1955
The Science Directorate announces they have finished the Advanced Gravitational systems. Plans are drawn up for the Stellar class survey ship.

Advanced Gravitational Sensors (4)   12 Survey Points

1st Jan 1956
Transport of 750,000 colonists to Titan has been complete. Titan will support just over 1 million population, so there is room for growth. After some construction factories are transferred, Titan will be able to produce their own infrastructure as needed. Plans also include installation of a deep space scanner.

15th Feb 1956
Commodore Sturgell sends a courier back with the news that the San Francisco system has six jump points. However, the system has no planets. The commodore plans to reenter Washington and head to the third jump point and survey it. The Revenue Service reports that the republic is operating in the black again, however growth of monetary reserves is painfully slow. They suggest possibly opening some sort of trade route between Earth and New Alexandria.

22nd Feb 1956
Admiral Badon finishes in Los Angeles. His ships are around 40% fuel, so he heads back to Sol for a refuel. The decision is made to divide Admiral Badon?s fleet into two fleets, one fleet with three Geodes and one with 3 Stellars. Once Commodore Sturgell reenters communications, he will be ordered to do the same. With the increased speed and efficiency of the new designs, the Eagles will be mothballed except for 2, which will be picketed in New Alexandria?s orbit.

26th Mar 1956
The Science Directorate has once again improved the per capita income production of our citizens. This should abate the Revenue Service?s incessant moaning about funds. Their next project is to improve the efficiency of the jump drives.

1st April 1956
The decision is made to ship more infrastructure to Titan. This should somewhat alleviate the growth problems Titan has been experiencing.

20th Apr 1956
Admiral Badon?s ships enter the yards for refit. The refit is expected to take until early 1957. Commodore Sturgell?s ships will continue to operate until then, and then be refit as planned.

6th Jul 1956
The Science Directorate has improved the efficiency of the jump drives by 33%. This will allow smaller drives to do the same work as larger ones. They next begin to investigate improving our main armament, railguns. Research begins into improving the velocity at which the projectiles are fired.

2nd Aug 1956
As the 10 year anniversary of mankind?s entrance into Galactic society approaches, the Senate publishes a census.
Earth (Capital)

New Alexandria (Washington A-IV)
   1.11 million people
   Automated Mines (35)
Titan
   0.81 million people
   Construction Factories (58 ), Automated Mines (60)

17th Aug 1956
The decision is made to ship one shipyard to New Alexandria. To facilitate trade and transport between the two systems, plans are drawn up for Jump Point Stabilization Installations, or more colloquially ?jump gates?. To build the  JPSI?s, a new class of ship is created. BuVess designs the Tonka class construction ships.
Code: [Select]
Tonka class Construction Ship    12000 tons     935 Crew     1222 BP      Signature 240-300
1250 km/s     Armour 1     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/0/0/0     Damage Control 0-0
Cargo 25000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 50    Replacement Parts 25
Jump Gate Construction Ship: 180 days

Ion Engine EE0.7 AR-0 (5)    Power 60    Engine Efficiency 0.70    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 25.7 billion km   (238 days at full power)

Construction on the 5 ships planned begins immediately, as these ships are expected to take over a year to complete.

22nd Aug 1956
Science Directorate announces they?ve doubled the velocity of the railgun projectiles on firing. Their next area of research will be into increasing the rate at which capacitors recharge.

24th Feb 1957
The refit ships of Admiral Badon?s fleet exit the shipyards. The Argonaut, Barracuda and Batfish become the 1st Geo Survey under command of Commodore Emile Rexrode on the Argonaut. Admiral Badon on the Catfish commands the 1st Grav Survey with the Bowfin and Billfish. Admiral Badon heads to Washington and the last unexplored jump point in the system. Commodore Rexrode heads to conduct a survey of Pluto before heading to Washington and finishing the geological survey there.

29th Feb 1957
The Science Directorate final facility is complete, along with their research on capacitor recharge rates. The new rate provides a 33% increase in rate. They direct their efforts to increasing the caliber of the projectiles. After this, they have scheduled improvements to shields and armor, along with a stealth theory.

9th Jun 1957
The 2nd Exploratory fleet enters Earth orbit and enters the yards for refit to Geodes and Stellars. This is expected to take until mid-April 1958. The Bureau of Colonization organizes eight round trips Earth-Titan carrying colonists to pump the population of the moon colony.

9th Sep 1957
The five Tonka class constructors are completed. As Earth has not built any components for the gates, they lay idle in orbit for now while components are constructed.

9th Nov 1957
Science Directorate has completed research into 25cm railgun projectiles. Their next area of endeavor is an increased shield regeneration rate.

24th Nov 1957
The Science Directorate has completed a 50% increase in shield regeneration rates. Their next area will be a better class of shielding, followed by upgraded armor. BuVess has determined that once this new armor is available, the Defense fleet will undergo an upgrade cycle.

29th Nov 1957
Two weeks ago, the Tonka class constructors left Earth orbit with materiel to build a jump gate. Construction on the Sol side of the Sol-Washington Gate has begun. Estimated time to completion, 6 months.

9th Dec 1957
The Department of Resource Evaluation informs the Senate that the supply of Sorium on Earth has been exhausted. There is still approximately 18,000 tons left in stockpiles, but nearly 1600 tons will be used for current projects. Earth also has nearly 6 million liters of starship fuel stockpiled. The Senate decides to transfer all of the fuel refineries to New Alexandria by the end of 1958.

29th Dec 1957
The Science Directorate reports that their efforts to improve the shielding has been successful. They?ve developed a new class of shielding which improves protection by 50%. After the armor project next in queue, the Directorate will concentrate on delivering hardware that utilizes the new technologies they?ve developed.

14th Apr 1958
After a fairly quiet and routine spring, the Department of Resource Evaluation reports that Earth has run out of Corbomite. The stockpiles of Corbomite are 45,000 tons, however, small amounts get used frequently for maintenance.

24th Apr 1958
The 2nd Exploratory has finished its refit cycle and has been organized into the 2nd Geo Survey, and due to a typo that was not caught for nearly 12 hours, the 2nd Grave Survey. Commodore Sturgell was overheard to remark, ?Where do they expect us to find a cemetery around the orbit of Jupiter?? The 2nd Geo Survey is under the command of Captain Hildegard Youmans on the Conger. Both of the 2nd fleets are sent to the New York system to begin operations. Captain Neil St Paul, commander of the New Alexandria Picket headed for Earth for badly needed overhauls. This unfortunately leaves New Alexandria uncovered in case anything should happen. The Senate approves a measure to fund 10 Deep Space Tracking Stations to be seeded around Sol and Washington as early warning systems.

Science Researcher V?Laxian shut the recording off. The next entry was cut off mid-word. The Hegemony might never learn what happened to these ?United States of Terra?, but the records found on the shattered, lifeless world orbiting a small yellow star might increase the stature of the Hegemony amongst the Galactic Federation. V?Laxian gathered himself and slowly walked to the waiting shuttle. He glanced one last time at the grumbling buildings and monuments this once proud race had constructed. As he boarded the shuttle, he idly wondered if the former inhabitants of this world had known what was going to befall them on 29th Apr 1958.
