From the journal of
Fleet Admiral Ilya Voskresensky
Commander of Soviet Space Command

Joint Review of Space Combat Capabilities
With members of the Central Design Bureau and
representative of Directorate for Space Intelligence

20 October 2115

The meeting was held at the request of Moscow.

Given the expansion of the explored warp network, encounters with new alien civilizations and the active threat of the imperialist alien invasion from the solar system of HIP 21932, a review of the current combat-capable ships of the Soviet Space Command and possibilities of future methods of Space Warfare is to be carried out per instructions from Kreml.

In accordance with instructions, I informed the representatives of the Design Bureau of the talks held in Moscow between the General Secretary of the Soviet Armed Forces and certain members of Politburo. They expressed gratitude for the information and said they would report it to the Bureau.

Vladilen Demidov, the member of Central Design Bureau's team of representatives (and leading expert of developing new missile and other weapon systems) asked if he understood it correctly, that they are to review the current combat starships in this meeting.

I said that this is correct and that in this meeting we'll also discuss the potential of new designs.

Main Intelligence Directorate's representative comrade Gawel Olender pointed out that while the class had excellent combat record, the imperialist aliens had stepped up their game and introduced new, larger ships with larger and faster missiles that the "Skory" Class has difficult time matching.

Comrade Demidov replies that while this is true, the class has been upgraded and retrofitted. He further added that with the new missiles such as the P-200L with much larger warhead, range and improved infrared homing system, the Skory-Class can still match the alien ships.

I expressed my gratitude for their efforts and asked if the "Gauntlet" early warning systems will be powerful enough for the twin-230mm gausscannon AK-222 turrets to track and target missiles, which was a major shortcoming in the last battle of HIP 21932.

Comrade Demidov assured me that it will protect our ships and that it has even easier time tracking the latest enemy missiles, since they are larger due to the aliens' apparent inferior warhead technologies, for which they compensate in size.

I expressed my intention of keeping the class in use and asked if they have plans for further improvements to the class.

Comrade Avel Petrov, one of the Bureau's representatives (leading expert in propulsion and FTL systems) answered that the recent improvements in fuel efficiency and faster-than-light drives, would free up internal volume in the design, which could potentially be used to increase reliability of the design. One possible variant he says would use the SVZ-92R30B boosted internal confinement fusion engines, to increase the speed of the vessel. However he regretfully informed that a improved model of the VF 23000M97 "jump-drive" is still months away from being ready.

Another member of the representative team, comrade Igor Muravyov (expert of sensor technologies), said that they still have a upgrade package ready for the class that would improve it's electronic warfare systems, sensors and replace the propulsion system with the latest, more fuel efficient model. He further added that the proposed package would much improve the reliability of the class and provide additional cryogenic berths for emergencies.

Comrade Olender said that while the improved speed would increase the lifespan of the class, it would come at the cost of strategic capabilities, given the increased fuel usage that would cut it's range almost by half, even with the improved fuel efficiency.

I agreed with him, but pointed out that the logistics division of the Bureau of Logistics and Colonization has two groups of T-02 class jump-capable tankers that can be mobilized for the combat fleet's use for long-range operations.

I informed that it will be taken in consideration to upgrade quarter at minimum of the current Skory-class frigates to the proposed variant that would use the boosted engines.
With the situation and future of the Skory-class frigate concluded, I then moved on to the next generation of frigate-class ship.

Moscow had time and time again expressed their intend to keep Combat Fleet's warships as cost-efficient as possible. Following the instructions given over five years ago, a new generation of frigates was designed to employ the use of gausscannons and railguns rather than missiles. With the combat experience hard earned in the battles in HIP 21932, the future of space warfare doctrine will be a balance between missiles, speed and railguns.

Comrade Olender pointedly asked why the design had been upgraded with additional missile launchers against Moscow's wishes. To come to the Design Bureau's defense, I said that the Kanin-class frigates will be less numerous than the Skory-class frigates and that they will be working together in future operations, therefore they need to be packed with as much long-range punch as possible.

To which Olender admits that this is acceptable.

Comrade Petrov changes the subject by mentioning that the field trials of the Bobrov Aerospace SVZ-92R30B boosted engines have gone without a hitch, and that encouraged by it, the completely new Oscar-class cruiser under construction will be employing similiarly "boosted" engines.

I mention my curiosity of the newest electronic warfare systems, such as the RB-480AM8 High Power Microwave projector and it's future potential. Comrade Olender said that considering the aliens apparent obliviousness to concepts of electromagnetic counter-measures, this system will be highly effective.

Another member of the Design Bureau's representative team, Comrade Olimpiusz Paprocki (leading expert in electronic warfare systems and study of energy weapons) said that his team is currently working on developing larger, longer range variants of high-powered microwave projection systems that could disable enemy starships without spending expendable ammunition.

I expressed my gratitude for Paprocki's and his team's work, and implored him to continue his work to decrease our reliance on expendable ammunition.

Comrade Paprocki thanked me and said that he'll tell my gratitudes to his team.

With all subjects covered, I asked everyone present if they have any questions.

None present asked any questions.

The meeting was concluded.

Thanks, I rarely have the time or energy for a full campaign write-up and updates, so I'm settling for these little bits.
