My current game is the first with invaders, wormhole showed up 2 jumps from earth. By year 4 improbably high thermal output ships were being detected in the system.
The 65 point energy weapons fire and impossibility of contact is worrying, but they seem to be ignoring my fighter sized passive scanning platform stationed next to the wormhole, I haven't rescued any of the Pan American crews who have had their ships lost there yet due to either distance or invader ships hanging around the life pods.
At the moment they're harmless enough despite PanAm and China shoving gates everywhere. Besides if they finally get their smeg together and attack earth I have America, China, Russia, India, Isis, and The other earth guys I suspect to be aliens to help in the defence.

In the one game I started with Invaders enabled, I found at least 2 wormholes in systems adjacent to Sol, both of which were active.

So after some time, it seems that many don't really see the invaders, while the rest mostly agrees they are rare. There aren't too many votes, so claiming them to be representative statistics is taking too much, but at least we had also 25% who have apparently seen them in any game with the tick.
I think the result can still be pinned towards that they are quite improbable guests.

They make you get good, fast, or die.  I never had such capable fleets until the first game I turned on Invaders.  I now use a lot more over-sized sensors and fire controls, over-fast fighters/FACs, excessively long-range missiles, just do everything more than it seems like you ought to.  Also, train combat drop modules and take a few prizes... you'll be glad you did.

45 years into a recent game (my 5th game, 1st serious one). Also, first game I turned invaders on.

Aliens send 3 scouts into Sol from a dormant jump point, doing grav surveys. Contact made impossible, I shoot them down.

1 year later, another scout pops up from an already explored system.

I send a small battle group through and notice a wormhole. Immediately send it back packing to earth.

A day later, 3 alien ships follow the fleet through and destroys it with missile spam. 7 more jump in through the span of a day.

My mobile garrison of 6 cruisers gets reduced down to 1 by missile spam (21-36x missiles per salvo, dozens of salvos). I manage to destroy 7 ships with single high density (20x missiles) salvos at each ship (smaller amounts do negligible damage). Around half of these kills were possible because their ships ran out of ammo.

Large missile wave (+2k) with thermal signatures of over 9000 inbound to earth. 10 PDCs (400 short range (<25mil km) missile launchers total, no other offensive systems) barely stop it from reaching earth.

My final cruiser runs out of ammo trying to finish the remaining 3 ships off, slightly damaging one before it completely repairs itself.

It flees back to earth, with 3 pursuers attempting to ram it on a 15b km course to earth.

Garrison of PDCs at Earth destroy 2 ships. The remaining hostile kamikazes into a mega passenger freighter and takes it down with it.

Invader threat suppressed, for now. The wormhole is still in the nearby system.

First time seeing invaders on my first enable. Passive aggressive is a good term for their behavior.

one more thing
they do not move a lot
so unless you have tracking stations everywhere you can simple do not notice them even if they are on your charted teritory

Invaders can be extremaly passive in many games and rarely make long trips even when they have proofs of gates in system so they shouls at least go scout and check

your initial game setup means a lot
try to make a game when there are no starting NPR opponent but increase their appearance chance significantly ( fast smooth game - opponents close to homeworld - aggressive game )
all system created will be accessible / visible to you - I guarantee that you will see invaders
maybe even too soon ;)
in such games I postpone my universe exploration till at least late 40's and usually see 1st wormhole within few years of my 1 new system survey , it is even quite often it is 1st or 2d sytem opened ...

WH in Sol is possible but rare
pray not to see it early
I had it once

I think they may only send new fleets when their previous ones are destroyed.  I had a game where 4 of their grav survey ships were poking around for years, maybe a decade.  Finally I shot the fourth one and within two weeks a fleet of combat ships jumped into my system.  Perhaps when you never see any Invaders is when one of their ships is bugged, out of ammo and not moving, in some system you haven't scouted.  Or something like that.

Ive seen them a few times.

One game was a horde of invader grav survey scouts - not much else.
In another they had a large incursion a few jumps from my homeworld, so I could engage them at my discretion, for the lulz.
The last few games Ive played I had to turn them off and delete them because of their active sensors would break the game with overflows.

Since I got Aurora, I personally have had around 5 serious long running games, and maybe twice as many different length test games always with the invader option turned on. Yet I have only ever encountered a (not too big) invader fleet once, and then heard nothing more about them later on too.
I've often wondered where they were when I saw so much of every other possible encounter. Some even reported they would wormhole directly into their home system, and you wouldn't be shielded against that even if you never left the home. Yet I have played one particular game up to nearly year 400 and 3 other ones over year 100 or 200 without seeing the slightest kind of activity.

So the question is obviously how much other people have seen. Was I just really unlucky in this regard? Maybe I need to localize my windows for GB to trigger them?

It is really strange to me, and I always prepare for this prophesied situation with very generous PDC built like thousands of size-1 or 200 size-12 launchers etc.etc., but all for nothing, since it never came.
