Ships of the Reformed German Reich
« on: February 21, 2013, 12:20:44 AM »
Got inspired by Sublight's Alpha Centauri Arena to do some battle writing of my own... And I'm shuddering at the thought of facing this ship. So I thought I'd share!

Code: [Select]
Blucher class Battlecruiser    35,000 tons     956 Crew     32888.9 BP      TCS 3.5  TH 48  EM 0
6857 km/s    JR 9-2000     Armour 11-95     Shields 0-0     Sensors 400/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 102     PPV 201.48
Maint Life 1.09 Years     MSP 7048    AFR 816%    IFR 11.3%    1YR 5991    5YR 89861    Max Repair 2625 MSP

I am aware that the Drachen's out-range my active sensor coverage, but even if I don't build a dedicated scout ship (Which I likely will; These guys are very much based on stealth and hit & run tactics - Note the TCS and Thermal emissions on the Blucher!), I've still got plenty of range to work with.

Cool ship!  I'm assuming the Drachens are MIRVs - I'm interested to know what their payload is.

One thing that jumps out at me though is that it doesn't seem designed to face contemporaries.  Namely all that Res 100 stuff isn't going to work against any enemy with a cloaking device.

Drachen Heavy Missile Mark III
Code: [Select]
Missile Size: 12 MSP  (0.6 HS)     Warhead: 0    Armour: 1     Manoeuvre Rating: 10
Speed: 33300 km/s    Engine Endurance: 11.3 hours   Range: 1,354.1m km
Cost Per Missile: 22.284
Second Stage: Drachen Feuer AM Mark III x3
Second Stage Separation Range: 12,000,000 km
Overall Endurance: 11 hours   Overall Range: 1371.1m km
Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 333%   3k km/s 110%   5k km/s 66.6%   10k km/s 33.3%

Drachen Feuer Assault Missile Mark III
Code: [Select]
Missile Size: 2 MSP  (0.1 HS)     Warhead: 13    Armour: 0     Manoeuvre Rating: 21
Speed: 60000 km/s    Engine Endurance: 5 minutes   Range: 16.9m km
Active Sensor Strength: 0.3   Sensitivity Modifier: 320%

Note - Republic AMM sensors have a range of about 10mkm, so I'm not much worried about the actives giving the AMs away. I'd rather not waste ordnance. Knowing there are 60 missiles inbound from 12mkm away isn't much different than 10mkm.
Resolution: 100    Maximum Range vs 5000 ton object (or larger): 960,000 km
Cost Per Missile: 5.678
Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 1260%   3k km/s 420%   5k km/s 252%   10k km/s 126%

Well, for one, they won't be facing any cloaked vessels (for now, anyway). I also must admit that I've essentially never used cloaking tech before, and I've little idea of how to counter it - Which is going to be half the fun of playing the unsuspecting Terran Republic.

The obvious counter is box launched AMMs. 1k 2 warhead missiles should do the trick. Of course, without prior knowledge of its capabilities, that ship is hilarious.

A hundred microwave and meson armed superfast fighters would likely also win, though I'd recommend >50k range. To be used after the missiles are spent on their carriers. Given that the ship costs 30k, an equivalent fleet of lower tech ships is pretty big.

On the other hand... It's not that fast, and has rather poor missile capability. Kiting would be pretty simple, though you wouldn't get past those gauss guns. Any AMM sensor would spot it before it's in gun range, incredible cloak or not. It doesn't have any EM sensors for long range passive spotting. And besides all that, it gives up all stealth on using its actives.

And that's why I designed this little guy here.
Code: [Select]
Orion class Scout Frigate    4,500 tons     117 Crew     1895.3 BP      TCS 0.45  TH 6  EM 0
6666 km/s    JR 3-2000     Armour 2-24     Shields 0-0     Sensors 400/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 5     PPV 0
Maint Life 7.04 Years     MSP 1474    AFR 28%    IFR 0.4%    1YR 52    5YR 781    Max Repair 600 MSP
Intended Deployment Time: 120 months    Spare Berths 4

Junkers J4500(3-2000) Military Jump Drive     Max Ship Size 4500 tons    Distance 2000k km     Squadron Size 3
Walter Low-Emission Solid Core AM Drive P200-S1 (3)    Power 200    Fuel Use 3.98%    Signature 2    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 255,000 Litres    Range 256.3 billion km   (444 days at full power)

High-Sensitivy Ship-to-Ship Radar System MR1920-R100 (1)     GPS 60000     Range 1,920.0m km    Resolution 100
Standard Thermal Telescope Labs & Observatory TH10-400 (1)     Sensitivity 400     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  400m km
Cloaking Device: Class cross-section reduced to 0.5% of normal

As for the other shortfalls, well, it has to have some disadvantages, doesn't it? My idea behind this design is convoy raiding - Chances are, your targets are either entirely unarmed, or so inadequately outfitted that it won't matter if they spot it before it closes to beam range - Assuming they survive the strike package. This ship is a squadron leader, but I'll save the other designs for when I write up the engagement. It should be interesting.

PS - These guys haven't realized what EM sensors are yet.

Ah. Nice ship for raiding, though I'd prefer more speed. It can take anything short of a main battle group, which it can probably spot early enough to avoid.

Your ships reminds me of the time before I witnessed the righteous light of communism and the glory of the workers.
Even thought I try to avoid roleplaying too much, I sort of "sink" into it without noticing, trying to name things and do things what I think specific country would do.

Every single component of my Dritte Reich Kriegsmarine flotillen were in german and I went throught great deal of trouble digging through wikipedia and other internet archives for inspiration.

Easy on ze Umlauts, Kamerad!  ;D

Edit: I'm planning an Austo-Hungarian scenario next, using their ship names, bolstered by a few Imperial German names.
