The (My) Imperial Terran Navy

These are some designs from what is probably my most successful campaign. Unfortunately, it bogged down thanks to constant interrupts, and I got to the point where I started a new game. Looking over the designs today, I realized how much I enjoyed them, and I just thought I would share them for comments/feedback/what have you.

My initial fleet consisted of one Destroyer Squadron of 5 Fletcher class destroyers and 1 Spruance class destroyer leader. The Fletchers proved their worth early on, when I got ambushed by 8 precursor FACs. Fletcher herself took something on the order of 30 strength 6 hits, lost half her engine rooms and most of her offensive capability... but she survived. The rest of the 1st DesRon quickly dispatched the offending FACs. After that engagement, I ordered enough ships to form the 2nd and 3rd DesRons, which became the backbone of my fleet.

After a couple decades of flying around and plopping down colonies, I got inspired: I was going to build a starbase, damnit! I have no idea why, now, but I decided that Earth needed an orbital station along the same grain as the Philadelphia of Command & Conquer fame. After about 20 years of shipyard expansion and over 3 years of construction, Vigilant, the first of the Sentinel class starbases, became operational.

During the 25 year Starbase project, I designed an Escort Destroyer and an Escort Destroyer Leader, and launched 15 and 3, respectively, to form 3 squadrons that operated in conjunction with the DesRons. Unfortunately, I never had to opportunity to test them in battle.

In addition to those, I designed an escort carrier, intending it to accompany either my destroyers or civilian ships going through somewhat unsecured sectors. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to build one, as the yard completed retooling during my increment hell.

Meant to operate in squadrons of 3 CA, 1 CC, 2 CVL. I intended to form fleets consisting on 1 CruRon and 1 DesRon (By this time a combination of my Fletcher and Gearing squadrons into 3 squadrons of 12 ships). At the time of giving up on this game, the first four New Orleans were in the yards and about 50% completed, with 2 Suffolks about a year behind, and a yard was retooling for the Saratogas.

As much as I would love to continue this game, I fear that it is hopelessly bogged down in increments, and will soon be broken by 5.70. And I am afraid I no longer remember all of my plans in this game, making getting back in to it much harder.

The missiles threw me. I was thinking a collier, but that would be very impractical with a fighter.

..Whoop. That was just a leftover from another iteration of that design, and I did not catch it until today.. And then I forgot to fix the post!

It's purely an active sensor platform. With the RP being that it's the CO's bird, of course. I considered designing a tanker, but, squadrons get so damned complex for me once I go past more than mere fighters...

Armor and fuel stowage are good ways to even out sizes.  Fuel is a nice one for 'command fighters' too - you can extend the range of the other fighters slightly in a pinch.

I usually design an tanker for that purpose, but I think that I just gave the fighters a bit longer endurance (Almost two days) instead, and left the thermal just in case (useful for detecting missiles if they pass down the same vector).
