Colonists on Canyon (40 Eridani-A III are up in arms at being dumped on Canyon without the necessities required to survive. Minor rioting is an ongoing problem for the Governor, who as yet has no military backup.

27th February 2104
Canyon (40 Eridani-A III). The infrastructure for the colony arrived, causing the unrest to dissipate. The Relocation Bureau promises an inquiry.

Earth. The last of the obsolete Dark class FAC, Dark Fighter was scrapped today.

14th March 2104
Dr Charlie Holloway, a respected and prominent expert in kinetic weapons systems was killed in an accident on the firing range today. The police have started an investigation and have called in help from the Secret Services. A police spokesman said it is too early to comment on whether there are links to the suspicious deaths of several colony Governors.

Unrest is rising on Gliese 205-A II Midway due to overcrowding.

17th May 2104
Sol Asteroid #135, site of an exhausted civilian mining colony. The Governor, Katherine Rowe was found dead in her apartment only days before the colony is due to be abandoned. The investigation into her death is taking on aspects greater than that see in a routine inquiry. The Navy have put the colony off limits.

Mineral shortages plague the Union. While not in short supply local stockpiles of Uridium and Corbomite have run low in the colonies. A lack of Government freighters means these shortages will take months to rectify.

Retooling for Leaf class completed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on Earth. The construction of the first of Survey commands own carriers is underway. Unfortunately it was not possible to fit a jump drive into the hull, thus Moon class jump cruisers are being seconded from the Admiralty.

Geo-Survey Group 2 completed its survey of the quaternary system Xi Ursae Majoris. Significant reserves of TN minerals found. These findings have moved it up the ranking for future consideration as a colony site as there is a colony cost 2 planet in the system and the minerals are concentrated in the three components that are within a few billion kilometres of each other.

There has been no sign of the Berserkers for over seven years. The rules that survey craft should have a naval escort are to be relaxed. The old Pioneer Mk II survey craft were so much roomier than the little 1000 tonne Hecla class, and for that reason alone preferred by their crews.

Geo-Survey Group 2 investigated a jump point out of Gliese 445 to find the Sigma Draconis system, a single K0-V star with a solitary rocky planet orbiting it.

There has been a wave of arrests across the Union today. Police and Secret Service personnel backed by sections of the new Marine Corp arrested several prominent political and financial leaders and some few high placed officers in several Governors offices. Details are sketchy at the moment but it appears that there has been fraud on a grand scale involving the concealment of the true mineral surveys of at least two systems rumoured to be Wonderland and Finisterre, falsified mineral surveys were substituted, so that they appeared suitable as the location for naval forward bases. It was the realisation of the true state of affairs that lead to the cancelling of the Wonderland naval base and its relocation to Camelot (Luytens 726-8-A II). There is also mention of involvement in the death of several Governors, allegedly when they found out about the affair and their silence could not be bought.

A new jump connection has been discovered between the AD Leonis system and the Wolf 358 System. Geo-Survey Squadron 2 made transit from AD Leonis. While Wolf 358 had already been fully surveyed there was an unexplored jump point, it wouldn’t hurt to probe it and withdrawn if it contained a habitable planet.

Wolf 489 was a non descript system, a white dwarf  primary lording it over a small clutch of comets. They had no navy riding shotgun, but why bother in this system? They had not had an escort for the previous two years. Shouldn’t take too long to survey a handful of comets.

19th April 2108
The Marco Polo had drawn comet #2, on the far side of the system from the jump point, they had already surveyed comet #1 enroute. They were travelling without the navigation sensor switched on; after all there was nothing in the system to run into.
Then when just under 400 million kilometres from the comet the thermal sensor alarm went off, the bridge crew were stunned into immobility. The captain, Lieutenant Commander Agnmukha Shangwan looked at his screen. The readout was not good. A strength 800 thermal contact was just 6 million kilometres off and had activated an S112/R65 sensor, the thermal signature was that of a Demolisher and they used an R65 sensor, but not that strength. Captain Shangwan ordered the grav sensor activated, while tight beaming a report to his two companion craft. The sensor confirmed his worst fears, the engine/sensor signature was definitely that of a Berserker, now code named Enforcer 001, a 7200 tonne craft approaching at 5555 k/s. Captain Shangwan ordered his ship turned end over end and accelerated towards the jump point, but it was a forlorn hope, the Marco Polo was an old craft only capable of 3614 k/s. The hostile contact continued to pursue, gradually closing the gap, chasing the Marco Polo down over the next 49 minutes.  Then at 12:47:42 rail gun rounds sleeted through the unarmoured ship, cutting Captain Shangwan in half while he was still in his couch. The Marco Polo broke up after half-a-dozen hits spilling its crew into space; it can be argued that the unlucky ones made it to the life pods.

The way the Survey Squadron was dispersed it was doubtful whether any could escape to raise the alarm had they been detected.  The Francisco Pizarro (Lieutenant Commander Jonathon Ronning) was closest to the jump point but was still >3.5 billion kilometres from possible safety. The Henry Hudson (Lieutenant Commander Qiu Shan Guo) was >4.2 billion kilometres from the jump point but further from the hostile than the Pizarro. However, the hours wore on and no alarm sounded. On 1st May the Pizarro transited into Wolf 358. Captain Ronning immediately laid in a course for Lalande 21185 and the Gate network. Three days later the Pizarro was in Wolf 358 and transmitted its fateful message. On the same day the Hudson escaped Wolf 489 without apparent pursuit. Both ships began the trek to Earth.

On the 4th May 2107
The 1st FAC Squadron left Earth orbit for Wolf 489 to avenge the Marco Polo. The Squadron consisted of the jump Cruiser Castillo, the Carriers Invincible and Indefatigable, their brood, Brave Invader, Brave Pathfinder, Brave Raider, Brave Rover, Brave Scout, Brave Aggressor, Brave Assailant, Brave Attacker, Brave Crusader, Brave Gladiator, the escorts Liopleurodon, Megalodon and Nothosaur, and the missile cruisers Balaclava, Borodino and Cambria and the munitions ship Gold Rover.

The squadron entered Wolf 489, a few days too late for the survivors of the Marco Polo. A course was laid in for Comet #2, all sensors switched on hoping to lure the Berserker in like a moth to a flame.

The sensor alarm on the big S1400/R100 sensor went off on board the Castillo. Enforcer 001 had swallowed the bait and crossed into the sensor envelope of the Squadron. CV Invincible launched its flight, Brave Invader, Brave Pathfinder, Brave Raider, Brave Rover, Brave Scout left their bays and headed out, the first time they were to be used in anger.

At 14:33 on the 17th May Enforcer 001 entered the sensor envelope of Invincible flight. At just over 20 million kilometres it was well within the 25million kilometre range of the AST3-2 Asps carried by the Brave class. The flight prepared to launch, but received a rude shock! The flights weapons officers reported that the Enforcer’s ECM was so strong that they were unable to achieve a target lock until the range reached little more than half that of the 21.6 million kilometre range of the FC36/R20 targeting sensor. The flight held its position and allowed the hostile to continue its approach. The range wound down, 16 million, 14 million, 12.3million, the order to launch was given and the flight began to launch. At the same time the flight turned about and began to head back to the carriers at a sedate 5554 k/s, keeping their distance from the Enforcer. The first missiles left the tubes at 14:43, ten seconds later 85 AST3-2 Asps were on their way.  At 14:50 the salvos impacted the Enemy ship. The first 17 missiles all hit as did the missiles of the second salvo, by which time it was streaming atmosphere. The third salvo completed its destruction, 51 5-kiloton explosions marked the Enforcers end. Two more salvos were left vainly looking for a valid target. The Invincible flight accelerated to maximum and headed back to the carriers.

The Squadron moved to investigate the comet the hostile had appeared to come from. Then at 19:50 on the 17th May the sensor alarm on the Callisto activated once more, another moth to the flame, or was this one fireproof. It was a new class of sensor contact but still had the fingerprints of the Berserkers all over it. But this time it was 14,350 tonnes, nearly twice that of all other known signatures. Indefatigable launched its flight, Invincible’s flight had yet to recover and rearm. The hostile contact, codenamed Stalker 001 was slightly faster than other Berserkers so far encountered, at 5574 k/s. Fortunately if it all went wrong the Squadron was faster than the Berserker at 6400k/s. At 21:25 Indefatigable flight attempted to launch on the Stalker at a range of 21.2 million kilometres, but to no avail, target lock was reduced to 12.9 million kilometres. The flight held its position and its nerve and allowed the Stalker to continue closing. Once more the range wound down, but no active sensors were detected. It was as if the Stalker could not detect the FAC. At 21:55 the Stalker finally entered lock-on range at 12 million kilometres, once more the weapons officers ordered a full salvo launch against the hostile. Brave Aggressor and Brave Crusader were the first to launch, followed five seconds later by the rest of the flight. With missiles away the flight turned away and headed back to its carrier.

The missiles bore in, in two waves and at the last seconds the Stalker woke up and anti-missile fire destroyed 12 of the incoming birds. 22 smothered the target in 5-kiloton fireballs, without obvious effect. As the second wave hit 14 fell to counter fire, 37 smashed into the target.  This time the strike resulted in the Stalker visibly losing atmosphere and its velocity was reduced to 4181 k/s. By 03:48 on the 18th May the velocity of the Stalker had returned to its former 5574 k/s, demonstrating some intrinsic repair capability. At 04:58 the Invincible’s flight had the Stalker on its scopes, but they were equipped with the old model AST3-1 Asps, not as long ranged, but more importantly less manoeuvrable and thus less accurate. The weapons officers watched their screens as the range decreased. This time Brave Rover was the first to launch and launched alone, no so good looking at the attrition of the previous missile waves. However, the remaining four FAC managed to launch together five seconds later.  At 05:35 the missiles reached their target, this time the Stalker only managed to engage the main wave, and only eight were destroyed, but 22 missed the Stalker, fortunately 38 hit the great ship and split it open, spilling its contents into space.

The Squadron continued on its course to investigate comet #2.

The Navy has a fleet of 18 carriers, 16 carrying 5 FAC each, the other two armed with 20 F-100 Starfighters. In addition there were 27 CLGs, 22 Escorts and a further sixty FAC protecting the union’s far flung domain. There were fifteen jump cruisers to escort the warships through the jump points to protect and extend that domain. Survey Command had another five carriers each home to four armed survey vessels to explore new systems plus a dozen deep space survey vessels to find the jump points.
 
At the end of 35 years of expansion the Solar Union has explored 95 systems and surveyed 78 of them. It met and defeated a handful of Berserkers and discovered the remnants of three civilisations.  In all this time and space it had met no other race and it probably never would, space having been swept clean by the Berserkers.

The Union occupies twelve planets and many mining colonies. Eleven of those planets were now ideal habitats for humans and the twelfth would soon follow. There were another fourteen planets with a colony cost below two, excellent terraforming targets, more than enough real estate for the moment, other systems would provide all the TN elements needed for the next twenty years.

Nice map! Think I am at 40 systems with 35 fully surveyed - 3 swarms on my flanks and one NPR contacted.

You might want to wait for v5.0 though.

I liked how you used your FACs I think that i'll build FAC survey groups on my next session with aurora.

Thanks Beersatron, I am using 4.91 to get used to the idea of ordnance and fighter factories again and try a start with few ship techs but lots of production techs and a slower expansion, so far in five years I am not far short of the Solar Union Tech levels, but only explored 6-7 systems, but should an NPR find me..........

Very nice read. I'm playing version 4.91, am on my first long campaign, and gotten familiar with juggling resources and the economy. There was a preexisting hostile jumpgate in the Sol system which I avoided until I built up a fleet I could be somewhat confident in. Though, never having made my own military designs before I was hesitant. If I'm correct your attack ships are small and you use size 3 antiship missiles. I created a 1000t missile boat with 15 size 4 box launchers loaded with one missile each. I really haven't seen in the forums people talking about asm's in the 3-5 size range but figured a size 4 at my tech level could do considerable damage. Anyways I've put them to use with considerable effect against 800t meson equipped FAC, launching 7 missiles with a 76% chance of success, nearly always destroying the ships while conserving missiles. Your log mentions firing salvo's. I was wondering if you use magazine reloadable launchers or box launchers? What makes you choose the missile sizes you do?  Sorry if I seem to be inundating you with my situation and questions.

I too hope you dont abandon this game too soon.  It has been a good writeup and I've been reviewing my own fac and fighter doctrine after reading your story, it has definately given me something to think about.  As an aside to Lafe my ASMs are size 6 and my AMM are size 2, can't carry as many but can get some good performance out of the ones I do carry.

My main combat ships are 1000 tonne fast attack craft. Where possible I use box launchers when I get the tech, while you don't need to fire all at once against the Precursors I met I needed to. This game was an experiment in that the main missile for the large combatants was size 6. But this is a little large to fit on a FAC. I would have been better off staying at size 3 or 4, especially as I was no match for the first Precursor I met. Using FAC with carriers enabled me to reload "on site" and extended the number of missiles I could bring to bear and provide a platform for a really large search sensor. The FAC use size 3 missiles as I could get the required range and velocity plus a 5 point warhead. If I used size 4 I reckoned I would lose a more significant proportion to point defence fire.

Thanks very much, but the Union has about 20-30 years of nothing but development ahead of it, it doesn't need to expand any more for quite a while. For it to get interesting an NPR would have to find it, possible but who knows when. Finally Aurora has moved on and I want to see how the Star Swarm can be beaten :).  My AMMs are usually size 1, fast manoeuvrable, no requirement for a great range and a single point warhead is OK until the enemy learns to armour their missiles.
