I think one of the last patches removed DRM, but you might be thinking of Galactic Civ 2.  That one wouldn't let you patch unless you did a bunch of stupid crap, and the original release was full of bugs that made it unplayable.  Egosoft is just a small German development company.  And apparently they are working on the next one and it looks unbelievable.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LabrDe4XJo0

GalCiv 2 was put out by Impulse/Stardock. Just needed the client similar to Steam to patch, etc.

Edit: P.S. I won't touch Ubisoft games if I was paid to.

For some reason this title strikes a negative chord in my memory, linked to obnoxious DRM. Like Ubisoft using StarForce DRM (and burning out one of my optical drives).

I have played it since the beginning, X-Beyond The Frontier, and it was the reason that I got an internet connection. I use to just get demos etc from PC magazines until I got the demo for X-BTF and *had* to get online for more information :)

Egosoft, and I think it's published in the US by Deep Silver

Edit: Here is a screenie for an idea of the graphics (not that graphics are everything, but it is f'ing beautiful) http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594692996042448817/36E6CAF4179E84BD6381549BAB1BD9D5A461D6FD/

Isn't this one put out by Ubisoft?

I was surprised that this one isn't up here yet.  Great 4x game, and a pretty dedicated mod community.  The game itself is a few years old now but there are quite a few games in the series.  I've heard people compare it to Eve but I have never played Eve so I wouldn't know.  The game itself is sandbox, but there are different story lines you can take on.  Game play wise it compares to something like Privateer (really old space sim) or Freelancer, lots of trading and fighting (if you want it, I prefer trading).  The big difference is that you can build your own space stations and pretty much grow your own galactic empire.  The graphics are great, and the universe is pretty big.

Anyways, I guess this isn't much of a review and more of a suggestion. It is definitely one that is under the radar and I was more than surprised when I had found it, and then wondered why oh why hadn't I found this game sooner.  It's a pretty complex game to begin with, and adding the fact that you can write scripts for it and mod it pretty much makes it as complex as you want.

For all I know everyone in this community is well versed in the 'X' universe, but for anyone that has never heard of it and wants a complex space sim that includes trading, building, and fighting I highly, highly recommend it.
