And it's released, and top seller on Steam:

store.steampowered.com/app/281990/

Played it all night last night and it's basically RTS Civ5 in Space with a touch of light RPG. Wonderful music and atmosphere + fun early game at least.

Coolest feature so far is probably that it looks like you can never colonize all planets with you main species, so you either need to capture/enslave aliens, Genetically engineer your species or develop robots that can live everywhere and eat energy instead of food...

Seems they managed to cover almost all Sci-Fi tropes :)

The custom racial creation is pretty cool. Fairly in-depth too.

I somehow limited myself to only 5 planets to start, which is nearly crippling when the 29 other races are not so limited.

You can only govern 5 planets directly, for the otehrs you need to create sectors witha governor. Defence is still your concern, but the civilian stuff is done by the sector.

Turn on the Tutorial,  when you colonize your 4th planet it gives you a tutorial on how to create sectors (though it's pretty easy, go to the planets tab of the empires window, and click "create new sector" then assign a governor and your uncles name will become Robert

Yep. Figured that out last night. Also did an uplift of an Early Space Age race. They are my vassals, but not too happy.

Of course, my biggest conundrum is whether or not to research Sentient AI...

Any suggestions on how to quickly jump into the thick of things?

It looks fantastic, but my current setup only exceeds the minimum specks if I assume the posted system requirements contain a typo. As a result I'd like to have some idea how I can test/judge mid-late game playability within the 2-hour steam refund window. Thoughts?

I don't think the game load increases during the game as it does with Aurora,  the only way I know of to be able to jump in media res would be to find a save game already in play,  I've certainly not seen anything in the setup to have you having colonized 10 systems with neighbors on all sides kinda thing.
