Title: Naming Theme Suggestions
Post by: Steve Walmsley on August 11, 2019, 05:22:46 AM
In the ship name list thread in Aurora Chat, Bartimeus suggested a thread for potential WH40K names: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=4905.msg115721#msg115721

There are various other naming theme suggested in different threads and sub-fora and I sure I missed some of them or forgot to go back. Therefore, this is now the 'Official' naming theme suggestion thread and has three purposes:

1) Post your complete naming themes here. This only requires a title for the theme and a list of names with one per line (either as a text file or directly in the post). I'll add them to C# Aurora.

2) Requests for names to create a specific theme. For example, using Bartimeus' example, suggestions for one or more genre-appropriate but non-canon names for WH40K ships that can eventually be combined into a theme

3) Making sure I don't forget to include a theme that someone has made the effort to create.

Is this for Commanders, Ships, or Systems? Or all of them?

C# Aurora doesn't have separate lists for classes, ships, systems, etc. There is just one set of naming themes for everything. The exception is commander names, which have their own themes. Either is fine on here.

Since it came up, I always had two issues with naming themes, for one that the names always came up ordered, so names repeat between different games using the same themes, and second that lists could run out, which is also annoying.
Could we ensure that names are randomly picked from the lists?

Since it came up, I always had two issues with naming themes, for one that the names always came up ordered, so names repeat between different games using the same themes, and second that lists could run out, which is also annoying.

Names run out because of a different problem we had: Aurora used to grab the first unused name from the list, which meant that if one wished to skip a particular name (for example, if it appeared on two different lists the empire was using) one had to manually set every single name after it.

- - -

I would love it if we had more options for procedurally-generated naming, such as {descriptor} class name so my Wind-class destoyers could be auto-named Arctic Wind, Bitter Wind, Cold Wind, Desert Wind, etc., and my Dragon-class carriers could be auto-named Red Dragon, Night Dragon, Gold Dragon, Shadow Dragon, etc.

Or even longer strings so that the '{adjective} {noun} of the {adjective} {noun}' format could be used equally well to generate names like Glorious Battle of the First of June or the Dark Crusader of the Mighty Emperor' by correctly specifying the desired lists.

- - -

Could we ensure that names are randomly picked from the lists?

No, we can not ensure that.  I absolutely do not want my Greek Letter Monitors coming out "Iota, Tau, Sigma, Kappa, Zeta, Psi, etc."  Ordered lists are ordered for a reason.

Now, there is no reason we can't have the option to "Pick randomly from list."  Options are good.

C# allows players to add their own themes/name lists, right?

See changes post for update to naming:

http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=8495.msg115783#msg115783

I added the option for random name selection and options for prefixes and suffixes to be used in conjunction with the naming theme.

Maybe createe a few mix theme for Earth multi faction start. Like European Union theme or Russian-Chinnesse. Could be great addon for quick game setup.

I also miss more choice for Main Empire Theme from Honorverse.

I found a distinct lack of Swedish themed ship-names when playing Aurora, so I hereby aim to rectify that situation!

- 66 Classic fantasy creatures ( in Swedish )
- 449 Names, creatures, places and objects from Norse Mythology ( in Swedish )
- 461 Birds names ( in Swedish )
- 49 Swedish City names

Note: Pretty much all other names for modern Swedish warships can be found in either the lists of Cities, Landscapes or Norse Mythology, so I didn't feel it was any point in separate lists for those full of duplicates.

- 233 Names of Fish found in Sweden ( in Swedish )
- 32 Swedish Landscapes and Areas names
- 13 Swedish Military Airplane names ( Sadly that's about all that's left when you remove all the boring technical names )
- 59 Swedish Minelayer and Minesweeper names

And for good measure, let's throw in a few names as well. Always popular to name ships after famous or historical persons.

- 33 Swedish Ancient Regents ( Pre Medieval Runestones and all )
- 40 Swedish Regents ( From Medieval to Modern )
- 103 Swedish Scientists
- 72 Swedish Explorers

Let me know if you spot any mistakes or have any other requests. I think those 16 lists should cover naming of most ships when Sweden goes to space.  ;D

Should "Poisonous Planets" actually be "Poisonous Plants", or is it self-generating a list of worlds with HCN atmospheres?

Since Sweden is going to space, here are current Finnish naval ships - since there are so few of them, I've grouped them all together.

Hämeenmaa
Uusimaa
Pansio
Porkkala
Pyhäranta
Katanpää
Purunpää
Vahterpää
Hamina
Tornio
Hanko
Pori
Rauma
Raahe
Porvoo
Naantali
Jymy
Raju
Syöksy
Vinha
Kuha
Kiiski
Jehu
Jurmo
Uisko
Vaarlahti
Vänö
Kampela
Hylje
Halli
Louhi

And here are old Finnish warships, I've removed names that have been reused for modern ships so that there is no overlap:

Ilmarinen
Väinämöinen
Vetehinen
Vesihiisi
Iku-Turso
Vesikko
Saukko
Pohjanmaa
Louhi
Aallokas
Apu
Jääkarhu
Murtaja
Tarmo
Sampo
Sisu
Voima
Wäinämöinen
Loimu
Lieska
Paukku
Pommi
Miina
Riilahti
Ruotsinsalmi
Keihässalmi
Rautu
Vilppula
Sveaborg
Pukkio
Pansio
Baltic
Frej
Poseidon
Suomi
Klas Horn
Matti Kurki
Karjala
Turunmaa
Aunus
Giljak
Tampere
Viena
Aura
Ukkopekka
Viipuri
Tuima
Tuisku
Tuuli
Tyrsky
Isku
Helsinki
Oulu
Kotka
Vasama
Nuoli
Turja
Hyöky
Hirmu
Hurja

Häijy
Jylhä
Jyry
Jyske
Jymy
Tarmo
Taisto
Suomen Joutsen
Matti Kurki
Mursu
Vahakari
Kustaanmiekka
Sunila
Ahvola

Could name them Finnish modern ships and Finnish historical ships.

And Finnish presidents:

Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg
Lauri Kristian Relander
Pehr Evind Svinhufvud
Kyösti Kallio
Risto Ryti

Hello,

Will it be possible to define a theme for fighter squadron ?

Squadrons don't exist in the same way for C# Aurora because of the new naval organisation, although you could set them up as a sub-fleet.

Here is a "Star Proper Names" list containing all 400-odd star names from this Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proper_names_of_stars). This has many more, but less familiar, names than the existing "Stars and Planets" list. I'm not sure what kind of empire would need this many ship names, but here it is if anyone wants it.

what i'd love to be able to do is to have naming schemes for ships based on their hull designation (like, a list of names for CA, a list of names for DD and so on), with an option for "no duplicates" (so each ship is uniquely named until you run out of available names).
even better would be to be able to make a complete hierarchy of naming schemes, like "overall, i'm using <x> names; but since i like cruisers, CA's get names from this list; and this awesome class here deserves its own naming scheme!"
being able to save that setup with your preferred racial settings (picture, ship icon, colour and so on) would be much appreciated

and since i'm dreaming about ship naming, having an option to add a hull number to the name (either for ship class or hull class: like "DD-187 Hawkwing (Maryland Class)" would make me feel far more attached to that ship than "DD Maryland #12")

AFAIK, you can already have multiple classes using the same name list without duplication, so you can select the same naming scheme for all of your ships or for all of your ships of one type without issues. Automating it would be difficult, as you would have to define which hull types were "equivalent" to each other... e.g. that CA, CG, CL all draw names from the "Cruiser" list while CV does not.

I do like the idea of Hull/Pendant numbers, but it'd be a very minor cosmetic tweak as far as I can see to have "HMS Manchester (D-95) (Sheffield Class)" rather than just "HMS Manchester (Sheffield Class)", particularly with the same issues as above for which ships would use the same number list and how the class types would be truncated (for example, the Daring Class, Hobart Class and Arleigh Burke Class are all DDGH by NATO descriptions, but their hull numbers start variously D, DDGH or DDG)

Since Sweden is going to space, here are current Finnish naval ships - since there are so few of them, I've grouped them all together.

And here are old Finnish warships, I've removed names that have been reused for modern ships so that there is no overlap:

Could name them Finnish modern ships and Finnish historical ships.

And Finnish presidents:

All added. The umlauts were fine in C# but were a problem for the db (appeared as question marks) so I had to manually replace them with the non-umlaut letters.

All added. The umlauts were fine in C# but were a problem for the db (appeared as question marks) so I had to manually replace them with the non-umlaut letters.

This is a code smell. You're using SQLite, which definitely supports UTF-8 text. If you put some UTF-8 text in and get garbage (or a replacement character) back out, then you have a bug somewhere in your code. An 'ä' should be bytes 0xC3 0xA4 in both the input and output. Perhaps you're converting it to latin1 or ISO-8859-1 at some point? If that happened before it was put in the database, you would insert a 0xE4, which isn't valid in UTF-8.

$ sqlite3 test.sql "select name from names where rowid=1;" | hexdump -C

It's fine within the program. The error occurs when saving to the DB. I'll look into the above.

Well, if there are Ukrainian themes already, I'll try to propose smth like "Class Scheme - Ukrainian" or, if my list is too short, "Ukrainian Historical". There are renowned rulers of Kievan Rus', southern (Ukrainian) principalities of Kievan Rus', renowned rulers of Cossack Hetmanate, and renowned Ukrainian fortresses.

Title: Re: Naming Theme Suggestions

what i'd love to be able to do is to have naming schemes for ships based on their hull designation (like, a list of names for CA, a list of names for DD and so on), with an option for "no duplicates" (so each ship is uniquely named until you run out of available names).
even better would be to be able to make a complete hierarchy of naming schemes, like "overall, i'm using <x> names; but since i like cruisers, CA's get names from this list; and this awesome class here deserves its own naming scheme!"
being able to save that setup with your preferred racial settings (picture, ship icon, colour and so on) would be much appreciated

and since i'm dreaming about ship naming, having an option to add a hull number to the name (either for ship class or hull class: like "DD-187 Hawkwing (Maryland Class)" would make me feel far more attached to that ship than "DD Maryland #12")

When I played I began the name of each of my ships with a hull number: so my first large destroyer (using "destroyer leader" hull designation---that's a list I hope becomes fully editable) was "[DL-001] Dyeus", the brackets and hull number helping me keep track of what the ship really is, the order in which it was built, and helping to organize lists of stacked ships. Helped a little with in-game bookkeeping and helped a LOT when many of my ship lists were self-made and I had to keep track of them externally. It also helped with atmosphere for fiction.

Maybe not something Steve wants in the official release, but here is a set of Dwarf Fortress based dwarven names for anyone wanting them. The first names are a complete list from the DF wiki, the last names are a randomly generated sample of ~500. I'm not sure how C# (or VB6, for that matter) handles special characters, but I can remove them if they cause any issues.

Maybe not something Steve wants in the official release, but here is a set of Dwarf Fortress based dwarven names for anyone wanting them. The first names are a complete list from the DF wiki, the last names are a randomly generated sample of ~700 or so. I'm not sure how C# (or VB6, for that matter) handles special characters, but I can remove them if they cause any issues.

Not sure why but I am having trouble with the special characters when importing text. I just imported the French list and had to manually fix the accented characters. I can probably figure it out at some point, but not before release.

EDIT: I have added the random dwarf names as they do not appear to have special characters.

EDIT2: The problem with special characters only appears if the names are in the body of the post. When the names are in text files they are fine.

Not sure if you want to add this to the standard database, but I like many others have thought of sending fellow Aurora players to die in battle for the federation, as such here is a list of the top 900 posters in the forum, pretty much anyone who's posted 8 times or more.
Edit: I Swear this isn't just a ploy to get my own name shoehorned in there somewhere. heh. Also its currently arranged by number of posts since that was how I grabbed  the data from the forum, its probably better to alphabetize the names which totally skipped my mind.

Added.

It just occurred to me that you probably meant this as a commander theme, rather than a naming theme, so I've added both.

I just realized I had a couple small errors in my dwarven last-name script I used a few posts up. I fixed them and edited the post with the new names, so they should be more varied and accurate to the game now.

Since Sweden is going to space, here are current Finnish naval ships - since there are so few of them, I've grouped them all together.

I saw this, and since I am also finnish, I thought I would expand on this name list.  I grouped these ship names based on "theme", since they went pretty neatly into 6 different themes.  I also added a lot of plausible ship names to the lists based on the themes.  The "Agressive" theme contains names made out of short agressive words, like "strike", "bomb", "revenge", "storm" etc.  Used for light boats irl.  The "Coastal cities" contains names of, well, coastal cities.  The "Fish" theme contains names of fish found in Finland and some other sea creatures, used for submarines and other boats as well.  The "Historical" theme contains the historical-based names used for the earliest finnish ships, usually based on swedish-era admirals and stuff, and after that I added a lot of other historical figures' names such as famous artists and the presidents.  The "Mythology" theme contains names from finnish folk mythology, with notably the names "Väinämöinen" and "Ilmarinen" having been used for the biggest ships in the finnish navy.  The "Regions" theme contains names of finnish regions (and finnish names of assorted regions), which are common in modern finnish warship naming.

All the names from "Garfunkel's post are also included in these lists, so I would replace them with these.  Total number of ship names here is 275.  They are ordered in a usable order.

I should probably link my old thread where I posted some lists of Finnish names as my entry to the suggestions. http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=8226.msg84962#msg84962

Edit; I'll just copy the lists over so you won't need to threadsurf to ancient history.

I've added them. The ä and ö characters are appearing as a question mark :)

I'll edited them, so apologies if I mixed any up. BTW I didn't realise Harkonen was a Finnish name :)

Probably best to replace with a and o in any future files.

EDIT: See 2 posts below.

I'm sending a list of Portuguese Ships Since the 1500 and a list of Portuguese personalities.

Added.

Here are the rest of the name lists.

I just imported these and the ä and ö characters were fine. It must be because these are text files and the Finnish names from Mulisa were in the text of the post.

Looks like attaching files is a much better option. No editing required :)

Härkönen, not Harkonnen. :) Ä is pronounced like the a in 'rat' and Ö is pronounced like... well, I actually can't think of anything in English of the top of my head that'd fit Ö.

I've been rewatching Battlestar Galactica and thought the episode names would be a good fit for Aurora ships.   I've attached that list as a file.   I also found the twelve colony-specific Battlestars, as well as all the named colonial civilian ships mentioned or implied in the show (There's a Gemenon Traveller and a Picon Traveller so there's probably a Caprica Traveller, too).   Note that "Pegasus" is both an episode name and a Battlestar.

I was always bothered by the fact that we had lots of explorers and astronomers, but no geologist namelists.

I made the following to fix that based on Wikipedia.

The Dinosaurs name list only has six entries. I've taken a more complete list from here (https://www.thoughtco.com/dinosaurs-a-to-z-1093748) and formatted it properly.

Title: Re: Naming Theme Suggestions
Post by: MarcAFK on April 22, 2020, 12:45:51 AM
A few Themes I've been using lately.
50 Metal or Rock bands or artists, 2 per letter.
60 Hydrocarbons, In 6 groups of 10 Similar types.
196 Nobel Prize Physicists in chronological order. And
81 science fiction Authors.
I generally use the Heavy Metal for bulk freighters, Hydrocarbons for tankers, Physicists for Grav survey or science vessels, and the Authors for Colony ships.

I'm a little dismayed to find that when adding a new theme ingame it's automatically alphabetized. Thats slightly annoying when my physicists get awarded out of order, but its worse with the Hydrocarbons as I had them grouped in a way that made them progress from Solid fuels to Liquid to gaseous etc. VB When Importing names kept the list in exact order.

Been working on expanding human namelists with a bunch of new ones.   I can't take all the credit for this: I mainly derived them from an old XCOM mod called Enhanced Namelists.   I just cleaned up the code and left nothing but the names.   I wanted to increase the national diversity of officers.   I like having my human campaign having a real global feel to it, and though the current namelists are quite impressive, I felt that there was room for more.   This is only a few of many that I'll be making.   So far, I have created Vietnamese, Bengali, Maori, Hungarian, Nigerian, Sinhalese, Albanian, Serbo-Croatian and Bosnian lists.   More will likely come in the near future.

Edit: Added more namelists, the new archive is in a newer post below.

I'm a big fan of the new suffix system for ship names.  Here are some "evocative adjectives" (that's what the site I borrowed them from called them) that I think work really well with it.

Well, I've completed version 2 of my additional commander namelist archive.    I've added over a dozen more nationalities/ethnicities with thousands of new names.    I would've added more, but there is a limitation I've found with Aurora itself that prevent me from doing so.    Namely, it does not differentiate between male and female-specific surnames, 'cause you can only add one surname file.    This is important for countries like Lithuania and Iceland, where men and women have starkly different naming conventions from each other.    Even so, there's a lot to unpack here, and I'm quite pleased with my progress.    I hope this makes your human-centric games feel far more diverse and immersive! Also, as stated before, this is not my original work.    I simply lifted them from the old XCOM Enemy Unknown mod Enhanced Namelists.    The mod creator deserves the real credit!
Here's a full count of countries and/or ethnicities I've included so far: Albanian, Armenian, Belgian, Bengali, Bosnian, Burmese, Congolese, Danish, Estonian, Ethiopian, Filipino, Hungarian, Indonesian, Irish, Israeli, Khmer, Kurdish, Latvian, Malay, Maori, Nigerian, Norwegian, Pashtun, Serbo-Croatian, Sinhalese, Swahili and Vietnamese.

I'm surprised there is not a lovecraft namelist allready.
So i looked up the lovecraft fandom page and made a couple of lists.

The Outer Gods List includes 51 names.
The Great Old Ones List includes 223 names.
The Elder and Old Ones List includes 33 names.
The All Gods Lovecraft Circle should include only the names of gods created by lovecraft and has 101 names.

I did spellcheck every name once but that's a really hard task, hope i didn't include some mistakes.

Is there a recommended (max) number of names for a naming theme? I was about to make a list for Danish names and got some data from Danish Statistics. At first glance it seems to be a COMPLETE list of (male and female) first and last names in Denmark by January 1st 2019, which seems a bit overkill. Is there any suggestions for what I should shave it down to or should I just put all of it in?

EDIT: I just looked at the file. The list of female first names contains 78.250 individual names, even down to those with only one occurance. Overkill is probably to put it mildly.

Is there a recommended (max) number of names for a naming theme? [snip] Is there any suggestions for what I should shave it down to or should I just put all of it in?

This, I would like to know, too. Is there any relevant technical limit? And how long should a list be for others' styles and preferences?

I myself usually prefer theme lists to be very long, overkill or not. (But I admit: that Danish one seems a bit heavy, even by my standards.) I haven't created any myself for C# yet. But once I get to a universe with a sophisticated custom starting setup where I create my own lists, and if I should decide to share some name lists in niches that haven't been covered yet, it would be good to know what length others find satisfactory & (with ship name lists under certain circumstances) manageable for their empires.

[snip] ...there is a limitation I've found with Aurora itself that prevent me from doing so.    Namely, it does not differentiate between male and female-specific surnames, 'cause you can only add one surname file.    This is important for countries like Lithuania and Iceland, where men and women have starkly different naming conventions from each other.

Wouldn't the solution to that be to create two separate gender-specific "cultures", one that includes only female names, and one only with male? Then you would just have to use both themes with equal (or unequal if it suits the story) weight in Aurora to include one actual culture.

I haven't tested/read up yet if it's technically possible to include a fe/male-only culture file in C Aurora. Workaround, if not: Unless I have impatiently overlooked it, unlike VB Aurora, male or female isn't used by C Aurora anywhere, at least for now (1.9.4), so you could just split names into two "male" and "female" files arbitrarily to produce the desired effect. So you would have one "Icelandic (F)" culture with "male" and "female" files that include actually only female names; and analogously for "Icelandic (M)".

[And C# feels already so good that I don't think there is any need for an Icelandic (Yes!) culture for VB Aurora traditionalists. ;)]

Edit: fixed accidental quote distortion

In the specific case of the Danish list, I believe the convention is to only include names shared by 100 or more people.

As for the technical limit, it might 1024 KB, or 256 MB.  Personally, I wouldn't want more than a thousand or so lines (and therefore names) in a single file.
Title: Re: Naming Theme Suggestions
Post by: smoelf on May 04, 2020, 12:29:42 PM
I ended up going for the 500 most common names for first and last names. It gives a nice breadth, while still conforming to Father Tim's suggestion.

I have also collected a few files with historic names for ships in the Danish navy in the 19th, 20th and 21th centuries. I have not distinguished between names of classes and names of vessels, partly because there is a lot of overlap in that area.

There are a lot of duplicates between the few lists, but among certain categories there are sufficient unique naming conventions that it made sense to make some of them into their own lists. If anyone ends up using it and finds that the duplicates are a problem, I can probably find a solution for that.

This is a list of IJN warship names translated into English - I think the approach taken may be somewhat fanciful (eg Ariake becomes "Dawn But Still the Moon Remains in the Sky") , but it gets some interesting ship names...

Could you make a Norwegian names list?

The game already includes Swedish names and there's a Danish names list underworks. My current game could really use them!

The list labeled Royal Navy Constellation Class is actually just a list of the 88 constellations, and isn't connected to the RN at all.  (I know because I put it together many years ago.)
Title: Re: Naming Theme Suggestions
Post by: smoelf on May 05, 2020, 02:16:23 PM
Since the need to procrastinate occured once again, I made a Norwegian personale names theme. The list of surnames is compiled after a similar method as the Danish list - based on current day data for the 500 most frequent surnames in Norway as of 2019. I was unable to find similar lists for first names, so I had to take a different approach. Those lists are based on the top ten most popular names in census between 1880 and 2019. This results in a much shorter list (about 75-85 names), and it is more historic in nature.

I might compile a list of contemporary names, once the need for procrastination grows strong enough, but that would require contacting Statistics Norway, so it might be a while.

A combined list of all the system names and commander names from the various Earth culture themes. I want to play a truly united humanity. And also never run out of names...

Would it be okay if I combined them all and then posted them here? Is there a limit to the amount of names that can be in a single theme?

Also, the ability to rename a system or planet using the same list of themes you get when selecting a name for a ship class would be nice. Or having a separate naming list for planets and moons within a system.

You can add additional naming themes for your commanders in the race information window. There doesn't appear to be a limit on how many themes you add so all you need to do is keep clicking.

A quick list of ancient Egyptian gods, 43 of them for now.

I tried to put more important/better known gods first. Let me know of errors/typos/important omissions and I'll update the file.
As soon as/if I give up my Aurora 1.9.5 game and stick with 1.11 for good, I may replace it with a longer list.

Removed the alphabetical list. Should have tested it first: Aurora arranges them A->Z automatically.

So, I have fixed the Hungarian commander names (the one that was provided by Son_of_Orion above), so they are ready to use already.

- Fixed dozens of spelling errors
- Removed the tons of duplicates
- Removed some strange/rare/nonexistent names and added more commonly used ones
- Fixed the missing/wrong accents
- Converted the files from ANSI to UTF-8 so every special character is appearing correctly in the game

Enjoy!

The dwarf theme was added in a form that was usable for ship hulls, but not as a commander theme.  I shall post the commander theme here.

Open your Race Window, click Race Name Themes tab in the left part of window, and for every Name Theme you want to use-in-mix - select it, type Weight of Theme number (for example - use it to indicate how many millions of people will have such names) and click Add Theme in the bottom of this tab. You'll end up with accurate mixed theme.

I've got a list drawn from lists of chess players of the past centuries and some people that famous openings are named after. Some contemporaries are in here in the assumption they'll still be recognizable in the far future, due to participating in world championship contests. It's a total of 96.

If there's a glaring omission feel free to suggest names to be added.

I've taken the current Space Marine Chapters list and done my best to make the words singular rather than plural (so they work better for ships or systems).  Mostly done with a simple script, and then made some corrections for irregular plurals and other oddities, so there may be a few errors left but I think its pretty clean.  Corrections very welcome.

Battlestars:
Code: [Select]
Galactica
Pegasus
Atlantia
Pacifica
Triton
Acropolis
Columbia
Rycon
Solaria

Aerilon Traveller
Canceron Traveller
Aquaria Traveller
Tauron Traveller
Virgon Traveller

Astral Queen
Cybele
Daru Mozu
Olympic Carrier
Zephyr
Cloud 9
Rising Star

Added for v1.12

I was always bothered by the fact that we had lots of explorers and astronomers, but no geologist namelists.

I made the following to fix that based on Wikipedia.

I've added all four. Not sure why they are coming out alphabetical if not added in that order. They aren't stored that way in the DB.

I'm a big fan of the new suffix system for ship names.  Here are some "evocative adjectives" (that's what the site I borrowed them from called them) that I think work really well with it.

Here is a set of Norwegian ship name lists, including corvettes, destroyers, FACs, frigates, submarines, schooners, and sloops.

Edit: Added a Norwegian cities theme as well.

I've added all the ship name lists but the cities list has no line breaks.

At some points, will we be able to blacklist some lists, in a permanent, beyond-a-single-game way? Like having a txt file in Aurora with the lists we don't want Aurora to consider? Because some lists, I guess only a few % of people will ever consider using them. And to each his own, there are lists we like and some, by personal preference, we will never use and they just clutter the drop list of choices each time we have to pick one.

I've just tried to import the first theme (Albanian) and the special characters (non-English letters) all turn to question marks. I still haven't figured out why files from some players are fine and others have problems with special characters. I assume it is something to do with file formatting but can't pin it down.

Does anyone else have any ideas? :)

EDIT: Found it - the text file has to be saved in UTF-8 encoding. Please can everyone submitting files use that format. For example, if you save in notepad, use the encoding dropdown next to the Save button

EDIT 2: Added so far: Albanian, Armenian, Belgian, Bengali, Bosnian, Burmese, Congolese, Danish, Estonian, Ethiopian, Vietnamese

Yes, you must convert it to UTF-8 as I did with the Hungarian set (please see my attachment) but still you need a native speaker to proofread it because the result will not be perfect with the special characters (?, ?, etc. ).  I have done the following steps:

- Fixed dozens of spelling errors
- Removed the tons of duplicates
- Removed some strange/rare/nonexistent names and added more commonly used ones
- Fixed the missing/wrong accents
- Converted the files from ANSI to UTF-8 so every special character is appearing correctly in the game

I have never gotten much milage from nation-specific names, because I tend to run empires having new backstories and histories. Instead, I've gravitated toward a mix of empire-specific names, and a suite of general-purpose names, to be mixed and matched according to desire.

Please see attached:
1. Names for freighters based on a "Thunder Road" structure. All names have a two-syllable word or phase, followed by the word "Road". The "weighting" and "spoken length" of the syllables does vary a bit, so poets and musicians may want to adjust things.
2. A list of clipper ships
3. A list of exotic colors
4. A list of constellations. This is the same as one already existing in the game, but may be clearly named as such and therefore be easy to find.

... and, please see attached three more files:
5. A list of flowers
6. A list of heroic last stands
7. A list of mythological birds (I find this especially helpful for scouts)
8. A list of birds of prey smaller than Eagles

Many thanks to Wikipedia for its invaluable assistance with these and other name lists.

Not a general suggestion and partly redundant with existing lists, but maybe useful for some in some contexts as prepared separate lists. A few quick ones I use for Earth start, real stars, exploration-heavy games to rename catalogue stars in a certain arm/region when I'm lazy:

Geographical or political subdivisions of real Earth countries. With slight modifications in some cases (split up double regions, no "Federal District" or "County of x" etc., ...).

Brazilian states (entries: 26)
Chinese provinces (33; with a second file in Chinese for those who can read it or for those who can't, but want unintelligible alien things to be labelled really unintelligibly alien)
French provinces (49)
Indian states (41)
Italian regions (22)
Spanish communities (19)

When extra lazy I use real city names from those subdivisions or variations thereof for colony names in the corresponding systems.

I'm currently playing a united-Earth-based ex-Communist, by now federal-ultra-capitalist three-species empire that is increasingly driven by a growing religion: a mystical belief in the "Ancients", a distant benevolent civilization of superior beings that has been buzzing around the galaxy for much longer than humanity and its warring neighbours. That inspires a mad rush of exploration, even by my generally so-inclined standards. [Setup: Conventional start, but with a distant starting NPR and for the first half-century or so: significantly increased NPR-NPR generation rate. One of these decades, that should lead to finding a well-developed region of space with decades of head-start in research and expansion. Once we get there.] Old guard Communists and Socialists, still strong on Earth, Luna and Utopia, usually doubt that the "Ancients" exist or even dare to ask the heretical question: What if they exist, but are not benevolent at all...? We shall see: 332 known systems and counting fusion-faster soon. And impatient to play Aurora after a hiatus, I'm running out of suitable naming ideas.

edit: minor copy-in-haste fix

There are no 3D star positions in random games, so no constellations.  It would be easier to generate a name theme using all combinations of Greek letters and constellation names, which would provide over 2000 names.
You asked for it.  Here is a list of 1873 Bayer designations.  Some names include superscript numbers (like Psi9 Aurigae).  I also added a file where the superscript number symbols are replaced with normal numbers.

Could you update Polish names? Currently implemented in game are from medieval times :) (Surnames are ok)

Also, there is a difference in surnames for females.
Exp. The male surname "Wolski", the same surname for female "Wolska".

If it is not possible to implement, male surnames will be fine.

SJW: Added for v2.4.0. Can only have one surname file, so used male.

A few highlights of the namelists I've made:

Tank Names: A compilation of US Army tank names, old fighter plane names, and a few personal ones I've added myself. These are a tad colorful, but make for good comic relief (personally, I use these for fighters). Examples include Chronic Pain, Lil' Paulie, Martian Manhunter, Puff the Magic Dragon, Wimpy, and others.

Constellations: A list of currently known stellar constellations.

Dragons: A list of famous or well known dragons in fiction. Pulled from mythology, the Forgotten Realms, video games, etc.

2100 Cities: A list of the top 200 cities by population, as estimated for 2100 (found here: https://sites.ontariotechu.ca/sustainabilitytoday/urban-and-energy-systems/Worlds-largest-cities/population-projections/city-population-2100.php).

A list of British East India Company Ships, and another of Chinese cities.

I've also made up a list of digits, zero padded, between 0001 and 5000.  The use for this is to allow more flexible number naming than the default Name Plus Number option.  By using this with a Prefix, I don't have to use the class name and can for example let an updated version of a class continue to be named with the same numbering system.

I've also generated the numbers One to Five Thousand as English words, but this is basically useless since the game sorts them alphabetically on import.  Posted here anyway since I've already made it. As kindly pointed out by nuclearslurpee, this picks the numbers in the correct order when naming things, it just displays the list sorted alphabetically when selecting from it manually.

Edit: Fixed a number of errors in the Chinese Cities list.

Have you tested this with actual ship names? The names are displayed alphabetically in a list, but the actual order in the DB used to name ships is not necessarily sorted.

I hadn't!  Thanks, it works!

That explains the "mystery" of how the Class Theme and System Theme lists don't name things in alphabetical order... :)

Just a quick reminder for contributors. Everyone is posting one name per line, which is great, but please don't leave any blank lines at the end, as I need to open each file and remove them. The cursor should be at the end of the last word when you save the file.

That’s actually kinda funny; POSIX defines a text file as a file containing lines of text that end in a line–ending character (which of course varies from system to system). It does not make an exception for the final line of the file; that too must end in a line–ending character! :)

But seriously, why not just have the importer ignore empty lines?

BTW, theme 455 has one that is empty :D

Thats what you will see if your cursor is at the end of the file when you save, its normally hidden.

Those aren’t mistakes, those are older ways of transliterating those Greek letters. ν was pronounced “nee” in ancient greek (it’s “ni” today), so “Ny” was frequently the transliteration used. And so on.

Of the two, I prefer the one with superscript numerals. You should do one with the original greek letters as well. Why go to Alpha Centauri when you can visit α Centauri instead!

For fun I threw together a small list of Stan Rogers songs, ships from said songs, and a few words I feel would make for funny ship names.

Some big lists of settlements in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  Sorted roughly in population order (though I don't think that's especially reliable).

I've put together a set of five system name themes for a multiple-player-race campaign. These are a bit unique as they each contain 63k unique names giving one for every system in a Real Stars game. Probably an unnecessary volume of names but you can never be too careful.

File names are shared with the race of my campaign and don't necessarily mean anything out of context. Most of these themes follow a convention based on made-up constellation designations (think "Alpha Centauri" but the "Alpha" is some other kind of designation and "Centauri" is replaced by made-up constellation names) and once these run out, the rest of the names follow some sort of catalog numbering scheme(s).

I went ahead and drafted a list of names of ships from The Expanse (both the show and the books), sorted by faction, with a combined list for all factions.

Due to attachment limits, I'll put the spoiler ones in another reply along with the combined list (which includes the spoiler factions)

Here are the spoiler factions from The Expanse along with the combined list (which includes ships from the spoiler factions)

The names themselves aren't spoilers per se, but looking them up could lead to people discovering spoilers for that amazing series.  Unironically, Aurora scratches that Expanse itch

A commander name scheme of Stripper names, something which I'm pretty sure that no one was looking for.

Now you too can have commanders like Sparkle Delight, Cobra Divine, and Vixen Peaks!

246 female names
90 male names
131 last names

A collection of names from the Alliance Fleet of the Lost Fleet book series. These make great names for any empire consisting of humans from Earth, without being too specific to any one culture or nationality. The lists contain:

List of combined adjectives and concepts (600)

I got inspired by the British cold war "Rainbow Codes" and Ian Banks "Culture", so I compiled two lists: One with descriptive adjectives and feelings, and another with general and philosophical concepts.   Randomized and combined they give names like:

List of combined adjectives and animals (600)

I wanted something in a slightly different tone, so I combined two lists again: One with descriptive adjectives and feelings, and another with animals.   Randomized and combined they give names like:
Only a lucky commander gets a ship named as glorious as the 'Brave Hawk' or 'Inspiring Badger'.   He is far more likely to get something like the 'Gloomy Pony' or 'Average Hamster'.

Noticed a dearth of Polynesian themes, so here's a list of Hawaiian Ali'i nui (chiefs, kings) from the pre-unification up to Kamehameha I.
