MagPlasma MIRV and railgun PD fleet
« on: September 15, 2016, 04:59:23 PM »
So I have been toying with a new fleet based around generalist ships outfitted with large MIRV missiles, and railgun PD. I'm very unsure about the feasibility of railguns in a PD role, atleast with these ships. The extremely large torpedoes also look quite suspect. I'm primarily looking for advice with the railgun PD, but feel free to comment on anything else.

The tactics for an engagement are quite simple: launch a massive salvo of armored MIRVs and then close in for beam range combat.

Corvette escorts provide either PD or firepower support. May or may not take part in specific operations.

The frigates are supposed to scout ahead of the main fleet and soften up enemy contacts, then, if possible return to help with point defence. If targets are crippled by frigates, they then close to beam range. If not the rest of the fleet launches their MIRVs. Fighters, if present provide very long range missile strikes.

All Capital Ships carry at least one recon fighter to help with recon. Ships are built and organised in multiples of 3. Same for small craft.  The range of the ships is small, but they are not supposed to go very far without a fleet train. All launchers are box launchers.

Obs: To-Hit chances for kinetics weapons are against targets moving at 40k km.

Comment: I have high hopes for this ship. It has 33% more PD than a frigate for 3 times less mass and cost. 48 shots in a 3 ship group.

Comment: This is basically a heavy Falcon, except it doesn't need a carrier, has more range and slightly better armor.

Comment: This seems to be a very powerful ship. Good range, decent armor and lots of firepower. A full launch from a cruiser group of 3 ships would place 45 MIRVs in space; that's 450 submissiles and over 1.3k points of damage!

Comment: Cheaper, smaller version of the Metropolis. The strike group seems small, but it might be more powerful than it looks considering the firepower of the bombers. Weak looking PD, but with interceptors helping it would be equivalent to a cruiser.

You don't need to armor your MIRV bus if your separation distance is far away enough. Your Sunflares have 7.2m range-you can safely put your separation range at something like 5m or so. I do like your Sunflares, btw.

Looking pretty nice. I will say that you can put a warhead on the MIRV bus because either way it will still target and close onto the enemy ship. Railguns work pretty well for PD and for a large amounts of ships they can create an area of denial against any ordinance. They do taper out near later techs as gauss cannon fire rate, turret gear speed, and FC targeting speed will outpace engine tech )unless you focus heavily on engines and ignore other things) while missiles get exponentially faster.
Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

You don't need to armor your MIRV bus if your separation distance is far away enough. Your Sunflares have 7.2m range-you can safely put your separation range at something like 5m or so. I do like your Sunflares, btw.

The idea behind the MIRVs is that they would be decoys against enemy AMMs after separating. That's why they have armor, so they can survive for longer and tie down more AMMs. If I were to put in a warhead on the bus I would have to give up some armor for a rather low yield. Not sure if it's worth it.

The separation distance was a mistake. It is supposed to be 6mkm.

Make another version with warhead instead of armor for the second engagement when they will think them harmless.. but yes I know the AI is too smart to fall for that trick.

Rather, I would guess that it would be too dumb to fall for that trick. I would be astounded if the Aurora AI actually took enemy missile specs into account in such a way.
