what's hyperdrive?

I've noticed a technology I can research for hyperdrive, but can't find anything about that on the wiki and it wasn't mentioned in the tutorials.  What's hyperdrive?

In the older version there an area call hyper limit around every star, when you are out of hyper limit you can use hyper drive to fly around faster. I think they are broken in the 6 patch

Not broken, disabled for v6.  The Hyperlimit is still there, just currently not relevent.

The engine redesign did not include the necessary changes to the hyperdrive code.  It is a tech path that Steve intends to address.
