Info provided below is in the spirit of providing constructive feedback.

How are you planning to use the Tribal and Town class destroyers? You have given them almost as much deployment time (24 months) as you have fuel/travel time (553 days). Do you anticipate sending these ships out 100 billion km, fighting one pitched battle, and then heading home? Are you not planning to stop along the way to refuel at a tanker and/or colony? Seems like you could get some space back by cutting down the fuel tanks significantly.

On a related note, these seem pretty lightly armed AND armored. Is their focus on point defense (PD)? I see you have gauss cannons and CIWS, as well as a small number of AMM launchers. Given the size of the ship I'd expect either significantly more PD weapons, significantly more offensive weapons, or both. To only have 5 layers of armor and no shields on a warship of 33ktons seems like a risky gamble. What are you using the extra mass on? I guess the jump drive on the leader, but what on the Tribal? By this tech level you should seriously consider adding some shielding unless you've chosen not to as a design philosophy. It will mitigate most long-range energy weapon sniping due to the lower damage at range and the shield's ability to rechare, and reduce accumulated damage from missiles that leak through your PD.

I also noticed that you have nearly 30k MSP. Are you achieving the Maint Life of 3.6 years primiarly through adding Maintenance Storage? I'd strongly suggest using less MSP and more Engineering Modules. A roughly 50/50 balance in tonnage between those two will give you a more mass-efficient solution and be less resource intensive to operate and maintain.

The fact that your 30cm laser has a tracking speed of 5,000 km/s when your ship only has a speed of 4244 km/s tells me your 30cm laser is turreted, which is a bit of a waste for that small of a gain in tracking speed.

Unless I missed something you only have one BFC, which means you won't be able to assign your gauss cannons to PD while simultaneously firing your 30cm laser unless it's also used in PD mode, which would be horribly inefficient in terms of MSP. Highly recommend adding more BFC which are tailored to the role of their intended weapons. A single-weapon BFC with tracking speed and range aligned to your 30cm laser wouldn't take up much space and would also give you redundancy in case of damage to a BFC (microwave weapons bypass armor and preferrentially hit electrical equipment).

You have multiple different sizes of EM and thermal sensors, which adds no value other than redundancy in the event of battle damage, by which point finding the enemy (passive sensors won't allow you to target, just to locate) is the least of your concerns. Definitely delete the smaller passive sensors of each type; you should only have one EM and one thermal sensor on a single ship unless you can come up with a really, really good reason otherwise.

Your biggest active sensor is both unnecessary and too big. You only need active sensors to be able to shoot (either energy weapons or missiles). Your longest range missile has a range of 59M km, and your active sensors that reach that far have a range of 131M km and 76M km. Delete the bigger of the two. The 76km one is probably about right, since it's effective range may be decreased by the enemy's ECM.

Likewise your BFC has a range of 246.6m km, which is 4x the actual range of your longest range missile. Cut that down to maybe 100M km max to save some space and cost.

Initial design was patrol based go out and show the flag seeing what whent bump in the night fight it off and flee. basically go through a few systems out side my core colonies and see what's around. Hasn't workd that way but never really changed it. Also have Planet X in sol and that is a very long trip for most of my designs. and I keep ending up with jump points well away from colonies on my main routes.

On a related note, these seem pretty lightly armed AND armored. Is their focus on point defense (PD)? I see you have gauss cannons and CIWS, as well as a small number of AMM launchers. Didn't start research sheild tech until magneto fusion drives, I think the C series has a shield not good but a shield also destroyers are known as tin cans for a reason ;D plus I forgot to increase it when increasing my tonnage. Also never had much combat experience with C# so threw a few weapons on that made sense at the time and am waiting to see how it pans out.

I also noticed that you have nearly 30k MSP. Are you achieving the Maint Life of 3.6 years primiarly through adding Maintenance Storage? Yep MSP to bring it up though later designs have started to add more engineering spaces as I realised how they worked.

Nope ancient design and not a turret weapon I keep forgetting to design and fit stuff of which my lasers are just one thing :)

Ah didn't know I need more than one but that's and easy fix next upgrade.

I'm paranoid about missing hostile ships so muliple systems though I do call the 1 HS sensor naviagtion sensors but will rationalise the number.

The 76km one is probably about right, since it's effective range may be decreased by the enemy's ECM.

Newest missile is 74m km so will probably just stick with the larger one and the small one is my anti missile sensor or that's how I'm reading it.

Likewise your BFC has a range of 246.6m km, which is 4x the actual range of your longest range missile. Cut that down to maybe 100M km max to save some space and cost.
Not sure about this one of the tutorial I watched or read suggested the longer range so you get better to hit chances as it's actually at short range by the sensor when attacking?

Anyway thank for the info I'm just feeling my way through both the game and ship design.

MFC only need a slightly more range than your missiles as that gives you little bit of safety in case the enemy starts running away. But BFC do need more range than what your beam weapons are capable as the announced range is when your UNMODIFIED hit chance is 50% so you definitely want more than that!

Even worse: the announced range is now your zero percent hit chance range, modified or not! To be fair, the announced range was doubled when this change was made, but it now means that a 384kkm BFC range (which used to give 50% hit at its labeled 192kkm range) is the hard limit of that BFC; if you're further away, the guns won't even fire and will simply alert as out of range. Modifications to hit chance simply push the 100% hit range out further with a steeper drop to 0% hit at the BFC's limit.

Expansion and the annoyance of no commerical ships with jump drives lead me to design and produce the Beacon Hill jump point stabilisation stations.

So far they have work perfectly.

I've only skimmed through the designs, but these two things really stuck out to me:

You're still going crazy with the passive sensors - you really only need a single EM / thermal sensor. If you're worried about detection, feel free to make it a big sensor.

All of these:
Code: [Select]
Sykes Electronic Systems Thermal Sensor TH1.0-18.0 (20%) (1)     Sensitivity 18     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  33.5m km
Sykes Electronic Systems Thermal Sensor TH2.50-45.00 (20%) (1)     Sensitivity 45     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  53m km
Sykes Electronic Systems Thermal Sensor TH5-90 (20%) (1)     Sensitivity 90     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  75m km
Are redundant - you just need the 75 million km sensor.

Your fuel tanks are also crazy huge. I mean, if you're regularly sending your Heavy Cruisers 436.6 billion km out, then go for it; but I highly suspect this is massive overkill. I'd also be worried that a fleet of these things would suck any refueling port dry.

Your Annual Failure Rate (AFR) is 1947% it means that this ship will brake 19,47 times a year. That is almost once per ~19 days.

Strategically it is a MPS sink!

Use some Engineering Spaces  ;)

This is a common misconception. The AFR will always increase with size , so the key metric is the Maint Life. A very large, very expensive ship will always have a high AFR.

A 10,000-ton ship with the same proportion of maintenance facilities as a 5000-ton ship (that is half the cost) will have double the AFR but the same maint life. A 20,000-ton ship will have 4x the AFR of the 5000-ton ship, but the same maint life, because it is effectively the same as the cumulative failure rate of four 5000-ton ships.

Have taken your feedback into effect with these designs as they were already designed and in the process of being refitted when I read your post. I'm busy researching new sensors.

I've cut the fuel tanks of the D series dsigns apart from the Survey Frigates to something more sensible. but I hae done lots of long patrols as I've been refueling all my ships in the sol system only so far busy geting the hang of the civilain shipping networks to move stuff out to new colonies and set up fleet bases.

I'll post up some of the D series tomorrow.

Thanks for this bit of info and I have switched to more engineering spaces and ensure the Maint Life is longer than the intended deployment times.
