Soviet Era Medals Pack
« on: December 29, 2012, 03:51:16 PM »
Hello everyone.

Skipping the introduction and the reasons why, I give you a Winrar file full of Soviet-era Medals, Orders, both military and civilian variety.
If I had a photoshop or something better than paint I'd have them all look better with black background as others. But only couple of them plus a completely original soviet-themed medal made by one friendly fellow at one videogame place.

If you want to name them after irl names, check this wikipedia list.

The images have been tested and adjusted for Aurora.

I could make them black backgrounds for you if you're okay with it, I have photoshop.

Edit: Also, the DL doesn't work for me.

I would appreciate that a lot, using paint takes lot of time and patience.
And eyes

Also, the DL doesn't work for me.

You mean you can't download?

Odd, the links works fine for me.

Yeah, I click the download button, it goes through the "Your download will start shortly," and then the page won't load and this shows up:

Error 6 (net::ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND): The file or directory could not be found.

Going to try it with a different browser.

Works in Chrome as well. GameFront is a big site, no reason why their service shouldn't work with all browsers. Probably just a glitch.

Thanks Marski! Do these overwrite anything?

If you have medals named M067 - M087, they will.
If you want to be sure, unpack the medals somewhere else and name them before transfering them into Aurora Medals folder.

This download does not work for me, either.  (And I'm using the latest Mozilla Firefox. ) It merely gives a page that says,
Quote
File not found, you will be redirected to hxxp: www.  gamefront.  com
And it takes me to the Gamefront main page.   :(

Are you sure this download still works?

Moreover, is this download still useful? Or, have these been added to the latest v6.  21 patch/install?

Re: Soviet Era Medals Pack... Revamped

I do appreciate this medals pack. For that matter, I like finding any additional content for Aurora. This image pack was cool, but I really didn't like the white backgrounds, the fact that they came in all sorts of odd sizes, and other little quirks.

So... I revamped this pack. And, with Marski's permission, I'll share what I did. (I.e.: Do I have permission?)

Mainly, I replaced all the white backgrounds with black. As the medals cast some degree of shadows in most cases (so the "magic wand" or paint tool wouldn't work), this was a very time-consuming process. As in, more than a few hours. However, I did not do it pixel-by-pixel, either. (Though, there was some of that.) I used a combination of Paint.Net (with plugins) and Photo-Paint. I had to build masks. For the round medals, this was made easier with simple black circles. The "feather" plugin for Paint.Net was indispensable to make it come out looking near-perfect.

There are a few other alterations, too. For instance, I did some color correction, most notably on M077 and M085, and added a bit of texture to M077. And removed some bothersome stuff, like the white vertical line on M077. (BTW: Is M077 even a Soviet medal? It reminds me of a Battle tech flag and looks like something they would use.)

As for the size, do note that Aurora originals range in size from 105x105 pixels to 260x260. Marski's soviet medals were huge in comparison. I decided to standardize them to 250x250, which is what the vast majority of Aurora's are.

I found some quirks with Marski's pack:

* M084 is 100% identical with M078, right down to the byte and pixel.
* M082 is... MISSING. As in, there is no medal with that designation!
* M080: The topmost medal is a duplicate of M081.
* M079 is... MISSING. As in, there is no medal with that designation!

What I did to correct this:

* M087 (Marski's last medal in the series) becomes the missing M079.
* M086 becomes M084 (because M084 was a duplicate of M078).
* M085 becomes the missing M082.
* M080: Removed topmost medal as it is a duplicate of M081.

Note: Marski's original pack weighs in about 1.89 MB uncompressed. My version is 0.21 MB, and the ZIP is 211 KB.

P.S.: Shouldn't this topic be moved to the Aurora > Installation area? That's where all the other image packs are found. All I'm saying is that it'd make this easier for players to find. :)

You have my permission, which I recall giving you a while back already, nonetheless this is excellent and I thank you for your hard work.

Note that M076 and M077 are custom made. The former was made by me and the latter by a comrade a long ways away.

Unless I'm terribly mistaken, I don't see how that's possible. I'm so new here that I've yet to send or receive a PM. Perhaps you gave permission to MrAnderson, who was also talking about giving these black backgrounds via photoshop?

Anyway, attached below should be the pack I worked on.
