Title: inter-system travel options

in aurora II i would like to see multiple options for inter-system travel.  coz who says the game can only be either JP's or warp? why cant we go with both? JP's for long term connected systems as a space highway and warp for deep strikes into enemy territory/exploration.

maybe with other options added in as they are thought of?

Any game with jump nodes needs special stars that have a tendency to have huge jump distances. I favor having black holes have jump lanes capable of taking a ship 10 or 100 systems farther than normal, if not more.

With all the games out there, there's a bunch of interesting concepts for possible drives, just look at Sword of the stars, freespace, etc.

Options for in- and inter-system travel could include:
Normal ballistic acceleration;
Mass accelerators (like weapons, but with people inside!)
Explosives (Project Orion)
Teleport (possibly a stutter drive that moves ships forward very small amounts)
Hyperspace
Wormholes/Jumppoints
Subspace (like an extra dimension that doesn't only allow long term jumps, but actual movement of sorts)
Sleeperships that travel to a system over 10 years, but leave no emissions until arrival.
Grav-Jumps (Essentially jump points on high gravity points, like BHs)

etc.

I'd love to see a few options in a possible Aurora II FTL, if Steve lives long enough for that.
I'd be nice to see to races clash with radically different technology.

exactly, also different kinds or armour and shields would be good.  not just lvl 1 lvl 2 and so on but you have them to work specifically against different kind of weapons.  like the biology research in producing different types of Armour with long term research for over all increases to strength and decreases to cost.

so gen 2 Armour could be exactly the same as gen 1 but i costs 10% less

There was a pretty good book trilogy that used sleeperships (or stasis ships) and timetravel to pretend they had FTL. Teehee.

Pity that currently they haven't figured out how to dissipate the energy that is collected as you travel, which upon release would evaporate you, your ship, anything and anyone that happens to be at the exit point.

Hey, just think of the military applications of that. Never again will you need to make a warhead; just slap an Alcubierre drive on it without any dissipation devices, and enjoy the fireworks.

Forgot to mention that the energy increases heat in the "warp bubble" so you need to develope a way to dissipate it anyway or it evaporates long before it reaches target.

Given the potential damage levels in NA as its currently structured I would think an in system jump drive coupled with a significant reduction in engine capability is going to be a must.

This serie features ships using Alcubierre drive.  "Technically" speaking, it is a good one.  I really enjoyed this aspect of the books, and I recommend them to people interested in it.  The plot is ok, not great but ok.  The part I didn't like at all is how humans are smart compared to aliens who are so vastly superior in all aspects.  I can't say more without spoiling possible readers.

Looks interesting. Sadly, stupid aliens seem to be pretty much a staple of military sci-fi.

Most of the books that have smart aliens involves humanity taking it up the ass before or barely after reaching capability of inter-system travel. Earth is nuked to dust all the same in all of them.

Halo books are the only one where Humanity is already a interstellar empire getting it's ass handed to it by another more advanced empire.

I have to agree that it would be a very nice thing to have multiple FTL (or near-luminal) travel techs, with NPRs randomly selecting one at creation. That's one of my favorite game mechanics in SotS.

Imagine the shock when you spend all that time mining the jumppoints, and your enemies just "warp" into the system. Or show up nearly-undetectable after a decade of unpowered (but high-speed) drift. Or have some kind of relativistic time dilation so that you end up with the problem in The Forever War -- you've been in travel for six months, but your enemy has had thirty years to develop better weapons and tactics. Any war would inherently favor the defender and become a lot like a space WWI -- the only effective form of offense is overwhelming firepower and/or numbers.

Rather a lot of coding work to handle multiple FTLs though.
