Naval ships and sizes?
« on: November 19, 2012, 08:01:09 PM »
So, I would like to have a small discussion of the benefit and drawbacks of building bigger multipurpose ships or smaller more specialized ships or even variations of them.

I have experimented allot lately with having a core of relatively large ships supported by medium, small and tiny supportive crafts.

In my current game I have a few distinct types of ships. These are small escorts or system patrol ships 3000-4000 tonnes. medium sized supportive ships with a distinctive and specialized role at about 9000-12000 tonnes. Small capital ships at 20000-30000 tonnes who are somewhat multipurpose but tend to favor some areas more than another. And then heavy capital ships from around 40000-100000 tonnes who are the main offensive weapon. In addition to these I run allot of small 300-500 tonne specialized recon and surveillance craft. They do everything from active scanning, passive, survey, emergency/fighter tanker and ambulance duties. Almost every ship class at the medium range and up has at least a 500 tonne hangar for these highly specialized crafts.

The main drawback that I have found so far is that all these larger ships have a very large thermal signature so I need to run them very slow in enemy territory so I'm not detected too soon.

Allot of micromanagement with tiny support crafts.

It takes both time and wealth to get those big naval yards up and running, but in conventional starts I don't find this to be much of a hindrance. I can usually build yards much bigger than I have need for.

You might loose some flexibility in creating task groups and you will not be able to tailor them as efficiently but on the other hand you may instead use high rated commanders more efficiently.

The benefits are that bigger ships are built much... much faster. They refit even faster since they have so many subsystems that you never upgrade them all at the same time so the refit cost is usually very low.

You can build variations of the same large ship in the same yard much easier with large multipurpose ships.

They seem to hold up much better in a loosing fight since they can absorb a lot of damage, this also has the benefit of giving you lots of very high grade crew which only makes the ships even tougher.

The use of bigger more fuel efficient engines can be very beneficial in that you need to concentrate less resources on your fuel logistics and production.

Any other thoughts?!?

Can you post some designs? I'm interested especially in those mega huge battleships and their fuel requirements.  :)
Regards.

2000-8000 Corvettes
10,000-21,000 Frigates
22,000-24,000 Destroyers
25,000-26,500 Cruisers
27,000-30,000 Battlecruisers
30,000-40,000 Battleships, Carriers
40,000-50,000 Dreadnoughts

I usually start with Corvettes + Battlecruisers, then start gradually adding other combat classes to my fleets.

This is something a real navy has to face constantly.  It is a given that ship specially designed to do one or two particular tasks will do those tasks better than a ship designed to do six things.  But the question is what can you afford?  If your budget (and budget is defined in terms of wealth, resources and yard capacity) is sufficient to building a special purpose ship to do every task you have this will yield optimal performance so long as you define the conditions of employment (the fight is on your terms basically).  If your budget is insufficient then you have to build the number of ships you can afford and make those ships serve all purposes.

The advantage to specialization is better performance at each mission.  The dissadvantages are increased cost, and the issue that the ship isn't useful outside of its focus.

The advantage to multipurpose ships is that you are flexible and get the best bang for your buck.  The dissadvantage is that you suffer decreased performance compared to a specialized design.

It is why most fighter aircraft today tend to be "multi-role" and the few pure aircraft types are extremely specialized (stealth recon, EW, etc).  Ships today are much the same.  Most naval vessels are required to fulfill several tasks that in the past would have been handled by specialized types of ships.  I don't know of too many smaller navy's that can afford to have multiple different types of escorts (outside of retention of older classes).  The German Frigate with basically swapable hardpoints is popular as it can be configured as desired (and I believe re-configured).

Basically, the question isn't if building specialized ships isn't a good plan...it is can you afford this?  If you can afford 5 ships and you have to perform 3 tasks it is more sensible to make each of the 5 ships capable of doing all three tasks then to build 2 ships for each of the highest priority tasks and 1 ship for the lowest.

I'm not all to long into my current campaign. I'm at Ion tech engines (from a conventional start) and most ships are on their second generation engines. Most ships started with Nuclear Pulse engines. My sensor level are not that great either and I'm about to upgrade these to the next level. I'm also starting to add shields to my ships.

I generally have two distinct parts of the combat fleet. One is the Independent Recon Divisions, which essentially is a fast cruiser fleet with Jump capability and able to operate far from my bases. The second part is a battle carrier fleet for basic defense of the core empire which basically are Sol and one other system (soon two).

There are two recon divisions of equal strength and each consists of the following...

Then there are a multitude of 300-500 ton utility crafts docked in my ships hangars in addition to two attack craft designs.

These are some of my combat vessels designs that has been built at the moment. There also is plans for big multipurpose fleet tenders, escort carriers, light carriers and more... but that will come when my empire grow and I will need them and I have the infrastructure to support them.

As far as specialized vs. generic designs, I find it depends in the intended mission. My 24,000-ton cruisers tend to operate alone or in small groups for extended periods guarding frontier systems and jump points against whatever may cross their path, so they need to cover all the bases. My 12,000-ton destroyers always hunt in packs of about a dozen, so separating ASM designs from anti-missile designs gives me the flexibility to throw more offensive or defensive tonnage as the situation requires.
