Our fleet has just finished its modernization program for most of its ships except for those based in Danwinegar.  Just in time for the next development in engine power to be developed. Rather then go through yet another SLEP for 50 combat ships, a new battle fleet will be built with the new technologies coming out of the research labs. This includes the new engines, two new missiles and a new design to go with them.

We are continuing to survey warp chains leading away from our colonized systems, but this takes time. Our resources have been switched from building our naval might to modernizing our various units so that they have roughly the same fleet speed. Once the last of the Spruance Mk V's are upgraded our fleet speeds will be a universal 3000 instead of 1666. It is to be noted that this speed is the slowest of the modern units, the Spruance Mk VII.

Our tactical officers are impressed by the new missile designs as they are twice as fast as the previous models.
The Kingdom is continuing to move population to the colonies. In particular, New York and San Fransico. The two colonies in Petrina will be left alone for now, but they will be getting periodic population and infrastructure infusions. Much debate has been done about stationing fleet units in Petrina until the colonies have had time to build missile defenses. As of right now, the colonies do not have defenses of any kind except for Earths Battle Fleet which can be summoned through the jump gate system. Quite likely too late to do anything other then have revenge though.

The black 5200 ton survey ship appeared in the jump point and listened as per standard percedure. After five minutes its captian prepared to give the order to proceed to the next jump point when the Commander of Sensors Hissedyowled in urgency. Its four mandables clacking together at the end to add even more emphasis. The 350 pound slimy skinned captian was typical of his species. Bilaterally symetrical, sporting slightly longer arms then proportionally normal for humans,, having three fingers and one thumb per hand, no body hair, and red beady eyes for sinister effect, well, not something to meet in a dark alley, or a lit one for that matter. The Captian touched his screen controls and looked at what the sensors were telling him. Two contacts, both at extreme range and moving at 2000 kps and 3000 kps respectively. That ruled out the clan of the Cendel. None of his peoples ships could move as fast as 3000 kps. His own, even with the new engines could only do a shade over 2100 kps. Outsiders then.  Well, the God knew what to do with them. The cleansing would take time to arrive, but he would be back with them. A chance for glory and, more importantly, permanment breeding rights for his lineage. He hissed his commands to depart immediately to the Commander of Navigation. 15 seconds later the black spindly ship disappeared back through the jump point.

The Mk IV Enterprise survey ship, the Charles Hitchcock Adams,  popped through the jump point into the Yamatai system. Within seconds its systems stabilized and it began to build a map of its surroundings. Its computer for astrogational updates found a data anomaly and reported it to Lt. Fransisca Helmsman, the current sensor tech on duty.
Her voice echoed across the nearly silent bridge, causing heads to turn and people to jump. "Sir, radar contact thirty thousand meters away! Active sensors detected. Movement potential at 2115kps."
The captain didn't wait for any additional information. "Emergency jump NOW!" He yelled.
Fortunately, the ship had come through exactly on the jump point and thus didn't have to travel to return to a "jump Ignition" point. More often then not, a jump point would not drop you off at the ignition point on the other side. This effect was called scattering. The theorists tried to explain it as viewing a jump point as a river that you are traveling up. the scattering occurred when you didn't enter quite right and emerged at one of the thousands of creeks that spread off of the river. Unfortunately, you could not reenter at a creek, you had to find the main river that everybody else drained into. Hence, the jump point itself.

This had caused a lot of head scratching at the academy, but it was the closest the instructors could get to explaining it to anyone who was not a quantum mechanics major with a astrophysicist minor degree.
The survey ships sensors just began detecting active sensors activating on the unknown ships when her jump drive activated. On the other side in the system of Riverside she immediately transmitted her warning as she drove madly away from the jump point towards the safety of the next jump point leading to Fienga.
The two Exxon class tankers waiting at the jump point lost no time lighting their drives and followinf the Adams.
The Texaco tankers were faster then the survey ships at 3529Kps versus the survey ships 3000 kps. The tankers would split up. One would head for Washington and be there in 76 days and the other would head for the survey group in Aquifolium and be there in 30 days. The jump chain heading back to Washington should still be unblocked at that point, but they still would not arrive back for nearly 100 days. A lot of time for something to go wrong. As for the second survey ship in Riverside, it was tasked to TF Survey 6 and was one of the older MkII's with a top speed of 2000 kps. Whether or not it had the speed to reach the Fienga jump point or not was unknown as the Yamatai and Fienga JP were only 622 million kilometers apart which was about 2 days for the Adams. TF Survey 6 was 21 days away at its best speed deep in the depths of the Riverside system surveying moons. If the unknowns followed through on the Adams heels they would reach the Fienga JP long before TF Survey 6 would. The only saving grace would be if the unknown ship didn't follow through the JP or didn't have the JP map for Riverside. The unknown ship was clearly waiting at the JP, though for what we didn't know. Further investigation of the sensor records later that day showed that the ship was a 5200 ton vessel with a drive field sufficiently strong to move her at 2115 kps.

Little else was known as she didn't follow the Adams back through the jump point.

TF Survey 6, consisting of an Enterprise Mk II, jumped into the Bonklin system from Fienga during its retreat from Riverside to Washington. the Captian didn't know whether or not the unknown aliens had followed the Adams back through the jump point in Riverside or not, only that he had not encountered an aliens when his 30 day voyage from the inner system had finished. It was  on pins and needles that he had made the jump into the empty system that was Fienga. He had no way of knowing if the aliens were there or not. He knew that they were on the other side of the jump point from Riverside into Yamatai though. It had been with great relief that no aliens had been encountered on the Fienga side. All through out his journey through Fienga to its only other jump point, the one to Bocklin, he and his crew had held thier breathes and watched thier sensors like hawks, waiting for the unknow to creep up behind them or lay in wait in front of them.
They were not expecting an alien fleet in Bocklin at 6.8 million Kilometers towards the Apta Jump point. His sensors detected 15 ships in all and they were headed back to the Fienga Jump Point at 1955 KPS. He tapped his controls to get a readout on ship sizes. The disply blanked and then listed mass readings based off of recorded drive strengths and then noted that the drive signitures were the same ones that the Charles Hitchcock Adams had detected in Riverside.

6-5600 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.
7-6000 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.
2-9000 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.

Fortunately, he could get to the Boise ump Point long before they could, but theier presence here meant that the Survey fleet up the Apta jump chain could be blocked from resupply. There were no fewer then three highly inhabitable planets up the chain which was why the survey units had not been pulled back to finish the "two system out" surveys. The policy of surveying two systems out from all colonized systems had been lax in its execution for the past twenty years and Fleet Admiral Braley had rolled a few heads in Survey Command. It would still take time and with only 22 ships to do it with, well, five years would be about right. EVen though Survey Command had two ships under construction or in refit at all times for the past four years, it had been a struggle to continue to expand the survey capabilities of the fleet. There were small fleets of frieghters sitting in orbit half the time, but the work horse of the fleet, the Enterprise class DSS, had been rarely, if ever, idle. The same could be said of the Exxon class tankers. Finally, at least one tanker was with each major survey area with more moving back and forth to Earth for resupply in addition to the ones assigned to the various battle fleets.
"Helm, continue heading for the Boise Jump Point. Sensors, I want continuous analysis. XO?"
   "Sir?", Commander Samantha Adams said.
"We will get out of here safely if we head straight for the Boise Jump Point. However, the survey fleets up the Apta chain will be transiting through here at some point in the next three weeks. So, do we reveal ourselves to them and let them chase us away from the Apta and Boise jump points so our people can get through or do we run for it? We could also power down and show ourselves as an additional rabbit to chase when they detect our people coming through? This may give them a higher chance of survival."
Samatha was quiet for a moment."Sir, there are so many of them that they could split up easily and catch us all. If even one of them with a reasonably powerful weapon gets into range of us... Its not like we could defend ourselves. Our only possible response would be to surrender or die. We will return at the head of a force that can defend itself if attacked, but in the meantime this ship and its crew represent a valuable resource to the Kingdom." She looked thoughtful for another moment. He recognized the look and waited while her first class mind worked. "Maybe something else can be done. Engineering can rebuild several of our planetary survey satellites to be emitters. We can plant them around the outside of the system on this side and give them low velocities. Push some towards the inner system and some outwards. Have them broadcast at random intervals. The aliens will go looking for them. They will have to, if only to find out what they are. Odds are this will dilute thier force to the point that they will not be able to maintain a strong force at both the Apta and Boise jump points. They may even retreat to holding only the Fienga jump point. If that is the case then our ships may be able to sneak through."
   "Make it so." He smiled.

The Fueling ship Exxon 08 jumped into Washington and immediately broadcast the events in Riverside. Two hours later the reports resting on Admiral Braley's desk. Across from him sat the King and his heir. Senator Amanda Haverty, the Kings granddaughter, was a woman in her thirties, who had inherited her grandfathers good looks. Not so good on a woman though. But there was nothing wrong with her mind.
Her slightly accented voice spoke with concern and worry." Admiral, the last species that we contacted we had to conquer in order to remove them as a threat. What is your feel on these new aliens based off of your reading of the Report?"
"Lady, I am alarmed. The aliens made no attempt to contact our survey unit. Any peaceful race would have sent us something. Our standard first contact message was broadcast and was met with utter silence on their part, until their active sensors came up. When we meet them again, we should have armed backup. I want to detach Battle Fleet and move it to Bocklin. We'll attach survey assets, all of our colliers, and several Exxon units as well. We don't know what we will be facing. With luck, there will be no war. Just a lot of boring talking." He grinned. "Lots of boring talking. "
The King and his granddaughter laughed with him.
The King spoke," Braley, I want her out there in case talking breaks out. She will be my personal representative. If talking doesn't break out then we will do what we did in Danwinegar. One way or another they will cease to be a threat.?
?Sire. ? Braley nodded his aged head. ? Our Battle Fleet in Earth orbit represents our most modern striking  force and will leave in another three hours after loading all of the available Mk V Sparrows. Two Spruances and Portlands will be recalled from Frontier Fleet and returned here as  a local defense fleet. We don't dare weaken the Frontier Fleet further as the alien ship in El Paso still remains a threat. We want to secure the Bocklin system and bottle the aliens up through their only known route of advance to our core systems.  We will use one of the Enterprise survey ships, the Agrippa, for first contact attempts. We have pulled together a support fleet of 2 Exxons, a tug, and all five colliers for a mobile resupply role. We would like to put Amanda on the South Carolina tug as it has the best unladen speed of all our ships. The quarters will not be cramped mylady. The South Carolinas have an excess crew capacity of 130. Once the Battle Fleet leaves orbit it will take 28 days to reach Bocklin jump point in Boise system. It is entirely possible that one of the exxons may beat it there by a couple of days. Our fleet will consist of:

3 Rapier Jump Cruisers
4 Portlands (3 Mk4, 1 is Mk5)
4 Iowas
9 Spruance
3 Navajos

That is a potential salvo of 79 missiles. It should be enough to kill any single ship that it is launched against."

"We have another Enterprise coming out of the yard on Mars in two days. It will be dispatched to Danwinegar with orders for them to release 2 Spruances for the Earth Defense Fleet and will return with them." He cocks his head, obviously thinking for a moment. " We need fast purpose built couriers with jump drives. Otherwise we will be sending Exxons and Enterprises on all sorts of missions, but the ones that they are designed for."

+++++

The Captain and his survey ship had finished dropping off all three converted weather satellites and was headed on a beeline straight for Boise jump point. According to his flight time worked out by the Navigation computers, at least one of the tankers should have jumped into the system from the Apta Jump point several hours ago. The one stationed with the survey fleet up chain should be less then a day behind it.  He had no way of alerting them to the alien presence without giving away his position. He couldn't use lasers as they required a known target so he would have to use omni-directional transmissions to see if any of the ships were here yet. If the aliens didn't know that he was here yet, they most certainly would after that.  The Exxon tankers would come through the Apta  jump point and would flee at flank speed through the system to reach the Boise jump point and supposed safety.  Unfortunately, that meant that they were going to be easier to detect and the alien fleet had fallen off the sensors more then a day ago.

27th of February 2082

The Battle Fleet had arrived at the Cleveland-Boise jump point. The Admiral ordered the fleets shields up and waits 15 minutes to charge them.
?Initiate the probe, Captain.? He wanted the Portland cruisers to all go in as they and the Rapiers had the strongest shields of any of his ships and the best chance of surviving an ambush and returning to tell the tale. The Navajo had shields that were 25% as powerful, but it had the most powerful sensors by far. The Spruance was filler. It had shields that were 60% as powerful as the Navajo's shields, but it had Sparrow Mk V's and twin lasers to thicken the PD capability of the Probe Fleet. If all went well, the rest of the fleet would transit normally. If the aliens were on the other side, it would get ugly. But then, the fleet was here to handle any discussion of intentions. Even those pointed discussions armed with 25cm lasers and focused nuclear warheads. His support fleet was almost a month behind him and was a great factor in his tactical decisions. While he was confident of winning any single battle, it was likely that he would have severely depleted magazines that would render most of his fleet moving targets in the next fight. The flip side was that two Texaco ships had arrived so he wasn't worried about fuel issues. He could maneuver without worrying about running out of fuel and stranding units. He could even run if he needed to. But running was not going to be happening today. Whatever else happened, they needed more information about the aliens capabilities and the only way to do that was to seek an engagement of one kind or another. He didn't want a fight, but he wasn't going to turn one down either. To add to his worries was the King's granddaughter. She was currently onboard the  Texaco class fueler assigned to TF Exxon 11 and the rumor was that she was being groomed to be the Heir. Not a situation designed to be low stress. In reality, it shouldn't be a problem. No support units should be in contact with the aliens anyway.  His orders were to keep them one system back whenever possible. He was going to be at the far end of a tenuous logistics chain, which meant precautions were a good thing.
He watched the countdown end on his view screen and  2 Rapier Jump Cruisers, all 4 Portlands, a Navajo Fleet Scout, and a Spruance Missile Cruiser moved forward and pause in front of the jump point.   Three minutes later they all disappeared from the universe and popped back into being in the Boise system.

The Battle Fleet had finally reached the jump point to Bocklin. The Probe Fleet had reached it 15 hours before and had spent the between times watching the jump point and scanning the surrounding space for surprises. They would wait here for the Fleet train to arrive.

20th of April 2082, 4:25 AM

The Probe Fleet does a combat transit with shields up into Bocklin. Literally seconds later an alien ship suddenly appears in the jump point.  Computers immediately recognize it as the ship that had been waiting on the other side of the Riverside JP. Thus it was hostile. Even as crew began to assimilate the situation, the computers opened fire. A Portland, 2 Iowas, and a Spruance all focused on the alien ship. 7 12 cm lasers and three 25 cm lasers lance through the alien ships hull. She was expanding vapor before the 19 missiles arrived.
The Admiral, fearing the worst, orders the remaining Portland, the four remaining Iowas, and a Spruance to form on the two Rapier JCA and to perform an emergency jump in order to provide backup to the Probe Fleet. They were to return immediately to ferry the remaining units through the jump point to support the combat undoubtedly raging on the other side. Fifteen second later the eight warships disappear from this universe, presumably to reappear on the other side.

One of the Rapiers reappear at the jump point and signal an all clear. The tension on the bridge noticeably relaxes. The remaining part of the fleet begins an orderly transit through the jump point in Bocklin. The other two jump points in Bocklin are literally on the other side of the system, but are relatively close together at only 1.063 million kilometers apart. The kingdoms Navajo scouts could sit in between the two jump points and have a significant overlap. The Probe fleet is sent to guard and secure the Apta JP and the Battle Fleet would secure the JP to Fienga. It would take a day to replenish the missiles used by Battle Fleet, so the Probe Fleet  would arrive at it destination at about the same time as Battle Fleet. The Admiral decides to name Battle Fleet as TF 1.1 and the Probe Fleet as TF 1.2. Once the JP had been secured the support ships would be brought up to provide fuel and potential missile replenishment. Of the two, the fuel would be needed most. The trip across the system would be done with shields up and this would increase fuel expenditures notably. His ships would arrive with anywhere from 52% to 84% of their fuel remaining. Enough for an engagement and most other eventualities that would arise, but not for any extended maneuvers. His march across this system would be cautious. The aliens had had at least one small vessel pass through that he had just destroyed. They probably had more. TF Survey 12 had reported 15 vessels of three distinct sizes, but none were on this jump point. Either they were off checking out the Apta jump point or, more likely, they were at the Fienga jump point. Unless the aliens were really nasty customers, they probably felt that this system couldn't be defended at both the Apta and Boise jump points and probably concentrated their fleet at the Fienga jump point. The ship that he destroyed was quite likely a probe to see what was beyond  in Boise. They were probably looking for which way led to the Kingdoms home worlds. Its destruction would do that, but was unavoidable. It couldn't be allowed to report back the size and disposition of his fleet. TF 1.1 was composed of solely missile ships, the Rapiers, and two of the Navajos and was more then capable of taking and closing the Fienga jump point from any conceivable threat, but wasn't likely to be able to force the jump point without painful losses.  Most of his ships were ranged killers, not meant for point blank killing. Those were reserved for ships like the Portland class of which he had only four. Their three 25 cm lasers could, if not outright kill a target ship, then cripple them badly.
It was time to get going. It would be impolite to keep the aliens waiting.

The Navajos from TF 1.1 picked up engine contacts on their passive sensors at the Fienga jump point from 41.68 million kilometers away. The sensor tech notes that there are only twelve contacts when the last sensor reports showed fifteen. Admiral is alerted. He decides that they probably are either on the other side of the jump point or providing escort to another fleet of ships. Likely survey assets.

3rd of June, 2082 00:10

Roughly four hours later the crews are fresh after eating a late dinner and continued rotated down times. The alien fleet was at 1.18 million kilometers and being closed upon at 3000 kps.  He faced a problem. Most of his missiles were the Sparrow Mk IV with a range of 600k km and only a few were Mk V with a range of 800k km. Furthermore, his Mk V's were significantly faster and would arrive first, thus breaking up the weight of his salvos.  If he fired at anything like long range, his Mk V's would arrive way before his others and would likely be wasted, while providing the alien PD crews with experience. He needed to get close in where the missiles would arrive relatively close together. That meant less then 300k km. So be it.

3rd of June, 2082 00:10:15

At a range of  279k km we fire focusing on only three ships: two of 6000 tons and one of 5600 tons.
Our mighty fleet belches forth its missile storm.  51 Mk IV and 4 MK V from the Rapiers flash towards the alien fleet. In comparison, the aliens shoot back a mere 25 missiles in five groups moving at a mere 5000 kps. The launches seemed to have come from the 6000 ton vessals. Still no idea what the other two sizes did.
On the disturbing side, one of the Rapiers and several Iowas have their data links down and they do not fire. Their salvos will be out of sequence and will not be available to saturate the alien PD. The Admiral vows that their Captains will be spending time in brigs, irregardless of this battles outcome.

00:15:05

All 3 remaining Iowas fire 5 seconds late adding 21 missiles to the storm descending upon the alien fleet.

00:15:10

remaining rapier fire , 2 Mk V

00:15:15

All 4 Mk V fired original salvo reach enemy fleet and are killed

00:15:25

Incredibly aliens kill 10 missiles (Mk IV's) out of thirty. Ours will impact in ten sec
We kill 4 missiles out of 25. A disgraceful performance. Theirs will impact in ten sec.

00:15:30

Our PD knock down 9 more missiles and the fleet is breathing easier.

Another 15 missiles are launched by three Spruances. They have elite crews and lower then usual reload times for their launchers.

00:15:40

In spite of the fact that the alien PD kills 9 more missiles, it is just not enough to stop the targeted ships from getting pounded. One of the alien missile ships loses its drive entirely with its targeting sensors while the other two targeted ships loses some drive strength each. The smaller 5600 tons ship also loses its targeting sensors.

In return, our fleet PD kills all but 3 of the remaining missiles and, of this number, one flat out misses and our Rapier takes two hits that scratch its shields. Cheering could be heard from all of our Kingdom bridges as we can now see the likely outcome of the battle.

00:15:45

The enemy fleet disappears through the jump point except for the targeted ships that we were pounding.

00:15:50

our fleet is ordered to cease to fire. The current salvos bearing down on the three enemy ships should more then kill them. There may be enough left to make dust bunnies...

00:15:55

Both alien missile cruisers die to 20 plus missile hits spread between them.

00:16:00

The smaller alien ship disappears in the mist of a boiling cauldron of 29 Mk IV  missiles blowing up around it.

Sensors announce the jump point cleared save for very small wreckage of three enemy ships.

The Admiral is both elated at the victory and grumpy about the severe waste of missiles. Clearly the Kingdom had the technical edge, but it was operating further away from its bases of supply then ever before. A round trip for a tanker was almost 60 days and a little longer for a collier. He would replace the fired ordnance from his Support Fleets colliers and send the emptied colliers back for more. The only question was, did he push on now that he knew that the aliens had only seven ships on the other side of the jump point or did he wait for his colliers to cross the system to him and then jump through with full magazines? There was also the missing 3 ships. Even if they were also on the other side of the jump point, they wouldn't add that much to the enemies fire power, would they?

I have a possible problem. Do I continue the campaign with ver 2.0 and permit the newer members of the forum to scratch their heads when I post designs that simply could not be, or do I ask Eric to make a note at the beginning that I am using an older version of the program and continue happily on my way? The newer versions add much in the way of capability and new horizons for stories, but I have no way to port my game into it and I have found myself rather attached to the Kingdom of Haverty (Old men and all). I have also debated telling the story from the Cendel view point as well. They are lower tech, but not stupid and have begun to evolve better ways of handling their new opponent. Tactics does help a lot, even when your weapons suck.

Haegan,

If you can private message me, I will get back to you offline.  I would like your 2.0 database to beta-test some software I am writing to upgrade it to a 3.0 database.

The software will move the system data to 3.0 (I think).  Once that happens, you will need to build the species, races, and ships again.

Pete

After five days of waiting, the Admiral orders the freshly arrived TF 1.2 to take the three Rapiers and to lose several of its ships in exchange. The net result was a force of nine combatants and three Rapiers that had a chance of taking the jump point. After the TF 1.2 transit into Fienga, the Rapiers were to return and guide TF 1.1 through as well. Projections had been run time and time again and they all gave the TF a 99% chance of securing the  jump point on the other side. The Portlands by themselves should have been able to smash the remains of the opposing force. The inclusion of the Spruances and the minor weapons of the remaining ships should just make the victory that much faster. This was assuming that the enemy were waiting for them on the other side. Considering the one sided pounding that had been given to them earlier, they would have to be insane to stay and contest the jump point unless serious reinforcements had arrived. Munitions had been requested by the Rapier and Spruance Captains, but it would take another 23 days for the colliers to arrive and he wanted to make sure that both sides of the jump point were secure. Officially anyway. The waiting was killing him. The flip side was that he could see what was coming and know in advance whether or not to run or fight. As of right now, a huge enemy force could be gathering on the other side and preparing to jump through and engage his ships in a point blank turkey shoot. His fleets advantage lay in long range combat where his missiles could pound his enemy into glowing debris without fear of an effective enemy response. The Portlands were built for the crush of close combat, but he only had four with him. The remaining six were in Frontier Fleet or assigned to Battlefleet Earth. While the four he had would most certainly stop those ships he had already seen...
Enough self doubt. It was time. His finger taped a button and Captain Samuel Adams Simms popped up on his monitor.
  "Sir, all ships report ready."
  "Begin. And good luck"

Three Rapiers, four Portlands, four Spruances, and a Navajo make their jump into potentially hostile territory.
