Scientists monitoring Mars atmosphere have begun to remove the green house gas added earlier in the process as the temperature had passed 28oC and an increase of only two more degrees would make Mars less than an ideal habitat. The Earth Resource Commission said the process would only cause a slight delay to the completion of the project and would not affect the Martian climate that the colonists have become used to. However, some colonists from the Andes have complained the atmosphere is already too thick and are moving to the upper slopes of Olympus Mons to find a location more to their liking.

At the height of summer the surface temp of the Earth was below -8oC, another nuclear winter gripped the planet. The temperate belts of the planet were particularly hard hit. Food supplies fell back on protein bars, as the recently resurgent agricultural sector was devastated once more. The Euro-Russian sector began to see substantial emigration to Mars, such that there will soon be a worker deficit in strategic industries.

In reparations the former Islamic and African orbital ‘Yards were confiscated and moved out of Earth orbit. The Earth Resource Commission commissioned three new ship construction operators. On Mars, Olympus Mons Technologies took over the former Qeshm Naval ‘Yard, their initial contract was to expand the yard to construct vessels of 10,000 tonnes. Also on Mars, Mariner Ship Building took over the former 1000 tonne capacity single construction bay African ‘Yard with a remit to expand the number of slipways to ten to enable the mass construction of fast attack craft. Because of the continuing drain on the skilled population of the Euro-Russian sector 85 million workers transferred from the North American Sector to the Euro-Russian Sector, with the carrot of substantially improving their living conditions, most being housed in coastal regions where the nuclear winter is ameliorated by the sea compared to the continental interior of North America, the gulf stream being re-established by the recent increase in the size and thickness of the Polar ice cap because of the two nuclear winters.

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Callisto has been increased to 49 civilian mining complexes.

30th September 2042
The Martian atmosphere has been fully terraformed to a pressure of 1 atmosphere and a surface temperature of a balmy 18.7oC. It is now an ideal world and is attracting large numbers of colonists from a dark, cold and desolate Earth.
The imminent completion of this task prompted several discussions, especially since there were still two of the massive Astronaut class terraformers under construction. In all there were seven Isambard Kingdom Brunel Mk I class terraformers comprising Terraforming Task Group 1, ten Isambard Kingdom Brunel Mk II class terraformers comprising Terraformer Task Group 2 and eventually twenty Astronaut class terraformers comprising Terraformer Task Group 3. Consideration was given to cancelling the last two, however, the penalty clauses in the contract made this prohibitive at this point with the vessels half completed.

There was a pressure group that proposed terraforming Titan, but it was pointed out that energy from the Sun should have converted all traces of methane in Titan's atmosphere into more complex hydrocarbons within 50 million years. However there are still substantial amouts of methane in Titan’s atmsphere. Cometary impacts may have added methane to Titan’s atmosphere, but Titan's atmosphere contains over a thousand times more methane than carbon monoxide, but comets are composed of more carbon monoxide than methane thus this appears unlikely. Titan might have accreted an atmosphere from the early Saturnian nebula at the time of formation and thus should have atmospheric abundances similar to the solar nebula, including hydrogen and neon, but this is also not the case. Many astronomers have suggested that the origin for the methane in Titan's atmosphere is from within Titan itself. That the atmoshere of Titan still contains substantial quantities of methane some 4.5 billion years after the formation of the planetary system, 90 times longer than required to convert all the methane in Titan’s atmosphere to complex hydrocarbons, argues that the reserves of methane are very considerable indeed. (Ref. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(moon)). Thus there could be huge amounts of uncounted subterranean methane, which would have to be removed. The final nail in that particular coffin was the very recent finding of an exotic life form living in the subterranean oceans that breathed hydrogen, exhaled methane and had a metabolism based on acetylene. The ecosystem this microbe is part of has not yet been elucidated.  The terraforming of Titan would destroy the habitat of this unique microorganism and render it extinct. Humanity had a very recently had a brush with an external agency trying to do that to itself, to want to be seen in the same light, with even so lowly a life form, and it was currently in possession of two planets, even if one was somewhat battered at present. So although the microbe didn’t have a vote its own uniqueness was its saviour. This did not leave too many other candidates; eventually the field was narrowed to single body – Venus.

So far as could be determined Venus had no extant life forms and once terraformed it would provide extensive “accommodation” for the species. Venus also has substantial TN mineral deposits abet at very low availabilities, but perhaps these could be improved by a surface based geological survey. The real obstacles were a surface temperature of >460oC and a planetary atmosphere consisting of 96.5% CO2, 3.5% nitrogen and 0.15% sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid at a pressure of 92 atmospheres. It would take a long time to remove the great bulk of theses gases to leave 0.8 atmospheres of N2 and then introduce oxygen, but it was an almost heroic and definitely a worthwhile goal to set Humanity, and the terraformers didn’t have much else to do! Thus the chain of events was set in motion to transfer the terraforming fleets and 20 terraforming installations from Mars to begin what was sold as a crusade to terraform Venus. The first task would be to reduce the CO2 to 0.001- 0.002%.

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Iapetus has been increased to 26 civilian mining complexes.

The Maggart Corporation commissioned a Port Mk IV freighter, the latest version, into service.

20th October 2042
In an effort to maintain parity with its competitors Darr Trading entered into service the newest model of colony transport, a Nieuw Amsterdam Mk IV mod 1. The main advantage of this vessel was the improved cargo-handling facilities improving the all important turn-around times for the commercial operator and thus their profits.

27th October 2042
The Dai Yong Ju sensor research group completed work on an MR552-R80 search sensor intended to update the Mountain class CLE.

Now the last piece was in place for the some of the wide-ranging discussions at the Admiralty to take form. There had been long arguments on the purpose and nature of the EDA Navy. Obviously the first mission of the highest priority was to protect the Earth from another Intruder incursion. However the picture had become more complicated with the spreading of a significant fraction of humanity to Mars and Titan, with Venus now a real future prospect. There was a slightly enlarged Illustrious Class carrier design, an updated Mountain class escort, an upgraded Whale class munitions vessels and a new Star class supply ship/tanker designed to live with the Carrier Battle Groups. There were new fighter designs still being worked on in addition to a replacement for the aging Gomati class missile boat. There was an ongoing argument of box missile launchers verse standard missile launchers. Most recent successful missile engagements had taken place using the former. Only in the near Earth orbit fighting using outdated weapons had they been used to any effect. Against the Intruders they had been spectacularly unsuccessful. But the argument still continued, a dozen 8-10k tonne vessels with 10 standard reloadable launchers and 150 reloads verse a similar number of ships with approximately 105 box launchers.

A second mission was to dominate near planetary orbits, but the design was not yet ready, the development of 35cm plasma carronades, similar to those found in Xanadu City on Titan, was badly behind schedule. Also in the future was a new large carrier with an enlarged fighter group, the arguments on this project was to cloak or not, as well as find a ‘Yard large enough to build it.

But there was movement, a decision had been taken to refit the Le Triomphant and the Illustrious class carriers to the new Illustrious Mod 1 class design as well as upgrade the Mountain class CLEs. The support ships would not miss out. The Whale class would be refitted, while the Leaf class tankers would assume a SAR role and four of the new Star class tankers would be commissioned. There was a considerable lobby from some politicians to realise the “peace dividend” and scale back the Navy now that all external threats had been dealt with.

19th February 2044
Colonel Matthews looked around him, the departure lounge was relatively quite, not many tourists on Titan and most postings lasted years, so no much return traffic. Still here he was, finally leaving Titan. It had been his home for the last seventeen years. But there was no space on Titan for retirees and he had reached an age when he was forced to retire. Fortunately he had made enough so that now he had to retire he could afford o plot on Mars reserved for Armed Forces veterans and still have enough to live out his days in relative comfort on what was now a garden planet, compared to Earth. There were no more alien ruins to explore, to be honest the experience had spoilt him, he missed the excitement of entering an alien structure which no sentient being had entered in quite a few thousand years, wondering what new discoveries laid within. It was a shame the last structure explored had proved unrecoverable. It was just as well the top brass had been talked out of making a big show of it.  At that moment the tannoy system in Xanadu Spaceport woke to life. “Will all passengers intending to travel on Darr Trading Flight DT 5698 please proceed to gate 48. This flight is now boarding.” Matthews took one last look at the forbidding orange landscape on view through the panoramic window set into the lounge area, picked up his in flight bag and walked off to the gate without a second glance.

The ruins at Xanadu city have been fully exploited. They have yielded uncalculated benefits and advancements in knowledge. The ruins had given Mankind a new perspective on their place in the Galaxy. There had been some sixteen engineering brigades, organised into four Pioneer Corps, involved in the recovery of the alien installations over the past seventeen years. In terms of installations, of the 1267 original installations that might have yielded a return 403 proved unrecoverable.  But the rest were of incalculable value, some 161 mines, 156 automated mines, 80 Construction factory, 33 ordnance factories, 13 fighter factories, 27 terraforming installations, 81 maintenance facilities, 33 fuel refineries, 25 genomic modification centres, 22 deep space tracking stations, 35 research complexes, 14 mass drivers, 9 commercial spaceports and a ground forces training facility had been recovered. 13,440 units of infrastructure and 73.9 million litres of fuel were also recovered in addition to 29900 tonnes of Duranium, 21400 tonnes of Neutronium, 59625 tonnes of Boronide, 9150 tonnes of Corbomite, 36400 tonnes of Mercassium, 32775 tonnes of 14250 tonnes of Vendarite, 14700 tonnes of Uridium, 3750 tonnes of Corundium and 18200 tonnes of Gallicite.
Further the alien structures had yielded nineteen breakthrough advances in our knowledge and analysis of many hundreds of ship components had not only provided scientific breakthroughs but opened up entirely unsuspected areas of science and may yet lead to the stars.

The purpose of the alien city remains a mystery, but going on the nine spaceports and preponderance of mothballed ship components and stockpiled TN minerals the favourite supposition was that it was a trading centre and clearing house for a race or races which may have been losing a war and were forced to evacuate hurriedly with no chance to take their resources with them and never returned for them.

The Casandra Mora Venegas espionage team that had been operating in Africa has been captured by aliens.

An espionage team from an unknown race have been captured on Earth!!!! The Casandra Mora Venegas Espionage team was still searching for war criminals in Africa when they were apparently captured by aliens. The team managed to get out a message describing their predicament. Troops from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Gorkha rifles attempted a rescue operation that sadly failed to achieve its aim; the espionage team were never located. However the Gorkhas did manage to apprehend those responsible for this terrorist act. It was only on their interrogation was the truth learnt. They were not from Earth, or any other planet within the solar system. Medical examinations have revealed that while they are superficially the same as humans, internally there are some very significant differences. The aliens have not yet revealed where they came from or how they got here.
The EDA Directors and Governors have gone into emergency session.

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Callisto has been increased to 56 civilian mining complexes, while that on Iapetus has been increased to 32 civilian mining complexes.

30th April 2044
The news has broken that there are aliens on Earth! Alien hunting frenzy grips the planet. Anyone who is different is liable to detention or worse by vigilantes. The EDA began an inquiry on the defence readiness of the Navy, to report back within the next two months.  The members of the Inquiry Board were retired Naval Officers and active politicians, with the former in the majority.

15 June 2044
The Defence Inquiry reports its findings. They declare it a mystery how the aliens arrived on Earth. Their ship would have to get past the planet based deep space tracking stations based on Titan and Earth and to a lesser extent Mars. Cloaking systems would be a possible explanation, but no alien vessel had been located or detected.

The inquiry found the defence posture of the Navy totally inadequate. If an invasion force of Intruders should appear rather than as was now accepted, a patrol group Humanity would be in dire straights. The carriers were all in for refit, as were the escort cruisers. The Gomati missile boats were obsolete but there was no replacement programme. The defence currently rested on the inner planets. Titan would only have its 36 fighters and twenty fast attack craft, some still under construction. The Navy had not taken into account the time required to move assets around the Solar System or consider what type of threat they might have to counter. The only saving grace the inquiry could see was there was currently no way an enemy fleet could appear in Earth orbit without having to traverse in from the outer system allowing the fleet to concentrate. Even the Intruder fleet had done this although it was only picked up as it crossed the orbit of Saturn.

The immediate recommendations were to increase the number of FAC based at Titan to thirty. The obsolete missile boats to be formed into the 2nd Flotilla and also based at Titan in a forward defence role, as the enemy would have to approach from deep space and provide the Flotilla the possibility of an interception if Saturn was on their line of approach.  The inquiry found the strike groups of even the refitted carriers to be inadequate and recommended the formation of two carrier battle groups supported by four or five escort cruisers, a similar number of the new Province class missile cruisers, two munitions colliers and two tanker/supply ships. They also strongly recommended formation of a third carrier battle Group immediately, not waiting for the Forrestall class CVs. The Colliers should carry 1208 Spartan AMMs, 360 Star Flash missiles for the fighters and 248 Longbow missiles for the Province missile cruisers. This load out would allow five full strikes from the Battle Group fighters once the carrier’s own missile stores were taken into account. There would only be enough Spartans to provide enough reloads for two of the CLEs while there would be sufficient Longbows to completely restock less than two of the new Province class cruisers. However the construction of another three Whale class munitions ships was viewed as prohibitive since two more are already required for the third carrier group and even more for the new large carriers and the missile stocks to equip them just did not exist and would not for many years to come. The initial contract for four Star class tanker/supply vessels should be expanded to eight with more units built as required for the new large carrier groups. The Inquiry additionally demanded that the large MR4032-R70 sensor, developed years ago, should be brought into service with an active sensor based at each population centre without delay to provide cover against clandestine alien incursions.

A carrier battle group to be stationed at Earth, Mars and Titan. Further recommendations were that the new large carrier project should be implemented as fast as possible with plans to build at least four of them and that the close action combatant receive sufficient research funds to keep it alive. The inquiry also urged the selection of a new fighter for the fleet to be finalised.  They also commented on the lack of training the Navy was undertaking and recommended regular exercises should be scheduled.

When EDA Ground Forces Command was examined a better situation was found. The army was up to strength and deployed. The only concern was the PDCs on Earth and Mars. The offensive PDCs on Earth were all pre-Intruder and obsolete. Further the anti-missile Defender PDCs on Earth were still equipped with outdated interceptor missiles, from AMM-1 to AMM-3 Spartans, but at least all other pre-Intruder interceptor missiles had been replaced. The offensive bases AMM stocks were low but caused the inquiry less concern as there were 35 fully stocked defensive PDCs on Earth. The Inquiry accepted that replacing the 40,000 missiles could not be done at present; current production was required for the fleet and the new escort cruisers. Mars was in a better position, but only had five Defender PDCs for a population of nearly 900 million, but at least some of their AMM complement consisted of the latest AMM-4 Spartans. Titan was singled out as there were only three defensive PDCs, probably enough for its 40 million population, but they were all equipped with AMM-1 Spartans. Once resources allow the planetary defence missiles should be replaced with a model, which should comfortably outrange current shipboard missiles. This would probably require the refitting of PDCs or new construction. The Inquiry noted that each major centre of population had two Astrodromes equipped with 36 Hurricane F1 fighters and four Atlantique sensor craft. They regarded these as dated but still serviceable.

The final recommendation from the Inquiry was that more effort should be put into discovering the principals of the alien Star Drive. There are examples in storage found on Titan, but no one had yet discovered how they worked. This situation must be rectified as a matter of the utmost urgency.

17th June 2044
The EDA Resource Commission announced that the known deposits of Neutronium on Earth have been exhausted. This further fuelled concerns over the long-term future of a TN economy.

Through an administrative error, 250,000 convicts were dispatched to Venus instead on the intended 50,000. 30,000 died in the first two weeks as the life support systems struggled to compensate and an overcrowded habitat module split open, exposing the unfortunate occupants to the searing surface temperature of Venus. The only saving grace was that it was mercifully quick. The Governor of Venus Li Yi Nei complained at the highest level. However it would be the middle of July before sufficient infrastructure was available for all surviving internees. In all a total of 40,000 perished. The unfortunate clerk responsible for the error has been arrested and is being held in custody. If convicted of gross negligence he could well join the inmates on Venus.

28th December 2044
The Maggart Corporation commissioned a new Port class Freighter into its fleet.

The Sam Peacock geological survey team found a new deposit of 14400 tonnes Uridium (0.1) on Callisto. The team do not believe there are any new deposits of TN minerals to be found on the moon.

The design for a replacement Gomati missile boat has made major improvements over the Mk III. The vessel has increased in size by 300 tonnes but the cloaking system is more efficient, the vessel has a greater operational range, is twice as fast and carries 42% more missile tubes and can utilise the latest long range missiles. The craft also have the advantage that it would be possible to reload two of them at a time in the hangers of the proposed Forrestal class CVs. The Viktor Lenac ‘Yard is in the middle of new building a new construction bay. The ‘Yard expects to begin retooling next July.

There was no real loss if she was wrong but vast implications if she was right. He thus applied for funding to construct three small gravitational survey vessels to survey the Solar System. (This of course had nothing to do with obtaining the funding to build his cherished sensors and improve his status within the scientific community). After some deliberation The UN Science and Engineering Council approved the funding for two such vessels to be constructed at the Mariner Ship Builders facility at Mars (later they added a third vessel after an approach from the Governor of Mars).

New classes of fighters have finally made it passed the design stage. There is a new Sensor craft, the E2 Sentinel that will operate with the Typhoon F1 strike fighter to be based on the two new carriers, Formidable and Foudroyant. There is also the Lockheed-Messerschmitt A3 Vengeance class Fighter. This fighter has its own onboard search sensor thus is independent of other craft. 120 have been ordered for the new Forrestal class carriers, the Admiralty viewed the flexibility of being able to order a strike package of any size an advantage over the amount of firepower delivered. However, the biggest disadvantage was the increased size of theA3, costing the space of two extra Typhoons, but the carrier did not need to carry any target designator craft, so in all the number of strike craft remained the same at thirty.

A nameless bureaucrat within the EDA administration has pointed out that the Venus colony will never be able to run the terraforming installations on Venus since all the population is totally concerned with day-to-day survival, there will just not be any surplus workers until the atmosphere is considerably reduced. At the current rate with the present terraformer fleet it’s likely to take over 1600 years before Venus is terraformed.  The administration does not like the information, but cannot change the laws of physics however much they would like to. The terraforming project is quietly dropped and the Venus colony kept on as purely an internment camp.

The gravitic survey of Sol System has returned its first results. There is a gravitic anomaly just inside the orbit of Earth. If Professor Segovia is correct then aliens could jump in system right next to Earth. The Navy is in an uproar. It is finally agreed to allow the survey to continue and then examine the results carefully. Professor Segovia is very pleased with the vindication of her theories and urges the EDA to build a vessel capable of traversing the anomalies.

The Road to the Stars Part 3
 2047

2nd January 2047
The Acharya Ghosh power systems research team completed work on hyper drive size multiplier 1.8. It was initially though this could be a route to an interstellar drive. This no longer looks likely and the work has been discontinued.

16th January 2047
EDAV Pyrenees completed her refit at the JaingYang naval orbital shipyard

24th January 2047
Dai Yong Ju sensor research group completed work on active grav sensor 48. This technology will be used in a new series of sensors for the Navy as time allows.

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Iapetus has been increased to 44 civilian mining complexes.

14th February 2047
The Maggart Corporation commissioned a further Nieuw Amsterdam colony transport.

24th February 2047
The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Callisto has been increased to 63 civilian mining complexes.

4th March 2047
The CLEs Mount Rainier, Rockies, Mount Rushmore and Ural left the JaingYang Naval Orbital Shipyard construction bays to join Battle Group Foudroyant. The Vesuvio, Mont Blanc, K2, and Eastern Ghats started construction in the empty bays.

The troop transports Anzio, Tarawa, Guadalcanal and Narvik finished their refit and rejoined their squadrons, completing the refit cycle for the transport squadrons.

Professor Segovia continued to refine her jump point theory with a paper on the maximum distance from the gravitic anomaly a ship would appear as it transited one of these anomalies.  She theorised that any vessel entering an anomaly should appear within a radius of 110.000 kilometres of the point source anomaly on the other side using her current design of jump engine.

5th March 2047
The gravitic survey of Sol System has been completed, 4 gravitic anomalies were found. A conference was organised by the Navy to discuss the import of these anomalies. Disconcertingly one of the anomalies was on a direct bearing from which the intruders appeared. Professor Segovia eloquently described how the alien star drives work, that she could design control system for a ship utilising one of the alien star drives. Finally with one anomaly within Earth’s orbit the EDA could not afford to take the risk that the anomalies were of no consequence. The conference ended with the Navy agreeing to fund one ship equipped with the alien drive system, which would finally lay to rest the idea that these anomalies lead to other star systems.

The Leif Ericsson would be built by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding ‘Yard and would be completed in May 2049. It was designed to carry a single Atlantique Mk II as a ships boat.

The Jump Cruiser EDAV Leif Ericsson left the Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding ‘Yard. It embarked the ships boat, an obsolete Atlantique Mk II and set course for the nearest gravitic anomaly, were it would meet Battle Group Illustrious which would observe the fate of the Leif Ericsson as it attempted the transit of the gravitic anomaly.

By the 6th April the Leif Ericsson Had arrived on station and now awaited the arrival of battle Group Illustrious, enroute from Titan, Commodore Fu Wen Wen commanding. This gave Commander Christopher Atkinson of the Leif Ericsson a chance to survey the area and test the jump engine short of actually opening a jump point. When that happened no one had any idea what would occur. There were some cranks on Earth claiming it would cause the Universe to implode!

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the mining operation on Comet Waresky has exhausted all known deposits of Sorium.

8th April 2049
Battle Group Illustrious arrived on schedule. It was now arrayed around the jump point. Commodore Fu gave Commander Atkinson the go-ahead to run up the jump engine to operating power. On the Leif Ericsson the jump engine wound up with a teeth jarring whine, as it reached it full power commander Atkinson gave the order “slow ahead.” From the Missile Cruiser Bavaria positioned so as to directly oppose the Ericsson, it looked like there was a distorting mirror between themselves and the Ericsson, Space appeared to ripple; the Leif Ericsson entered the distorted area of space and seemed to writhe, becoming shorter, as it moved further inwards it appeared to slowly disappear like a Cheshire cat fading out. Seconds later the Leif Ericsson had gone, no explosion, no flash, no debris, nothing, just gone!  Sensors on the fleet scout Vigilance recorded a large gravitic surge as the vessel disappeared, but there was no other sign it had ever existed.

Deutsche Werfte Commercial Orbital ‘Yard laid down five of the new class of salvage vessels utilising the alien salvage modules found on Titan, the Edenton class. The five vessels were named Beaufort, Edenton, Sayaniy, Giorgy Kozmin and Mikhail Rudnitskiy.
