Send Steve a message asking for the designer mode password. It's got quite a few things for interfering with the NPR, basically unlocking them to be modified like most player races.
However the potential for corrupting the database while doing this is rather high, which is why you need to ask for the password, Steve wouldn't want a bunch of bug reports about things literally caused by a player doing things using designer mode.

While we're at it upgraded armour type should reduce the weight per level of armour. That's really bugged me. Early component armour should be bulky and terrible.

I don't like the idea of artificially adding in an extra multiplier to missiles, but Honestly i think missile ranges are far too long and if making an arbitrary change results in an improvement  to gameplay I'm all for it.
Personally I don't like shields being decoupled from fuel usage, but only because I'm a fan of the idea of them requiring power plants, and power plants needing fuel anyway. XD.

Abstraction would be and interesting option to work on, however it remains to be seen if anyone will actually have a problem with the civilian shipping in C# due to the major performance increase.
Smarter ship usage by the AI would come a long way to avoiding slow downs, already major gains was made by giving civilians more power to cull or upgrade their ship size, similar performance gains might be made by making civilians less efficient when it comes to picking up and delivering things. For instance large ships picking up multiple cargos that are near each other, individually each delivery might take longer, but as only one large ship is being used for multiple orders it's more efficient.

Once you have high density duranium armour you can make 500 ton fighter pods with 375 tons of hanger space. Sure they have 100% failure rate, deployment time of 2 weeks, insufficient flight crew berths, and no speed or range, but I'm pretty sure that with only hangers in them you won't actually get any maintenance failures.

You might want to check the C# development thread.
7.2 isn't going to be released for the old Visual basic Aurora.
Instead Steve is completely rewriting the game in a language more suited for running Aurora, and without using a database resulting in 1000 times faster processing.
Changes intended for 7.2 will be in the new version, as well as many others, development seems surprisingly far, but don't expect a release any time soon.

Theres a bit of conflicting information going on in here, and while I still believe what the wiki says,  I'm going to science this just to check.
The wiki says that fire control speed is limited by the tracking speed, which is the higher of either the base racial tracking speed, or the ships speed. except in the case of turrets.
Setup should be simple enough. I'll be back soon with results.
EDIT: Well for a start the displayed hit percentages in the class design window is limited only by the fire control speed, not the ships speed or the tracking speed. My tests have been negative so far, testing at 0km range makes every shot 100% effective.
