Anybody seen Steve?
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:42:34 AM »
We haven't heard anything from Steve in a while, I hope everything is ok, just used to regular posts from him I guess!

He is probably in Vegas sitting at the poker table!

Hope you had a great New Years Steve  :)

I've been wondering the same thing.  His profile says he last logged in Nov 29th.

Still alive!

I have been playing a lot of live poker these last few months, involving 18-24 hour sessions and some $5000+ wins and losses in single sessions. My favourite game of 6-card Omaha has really taken off in the north-west of England in recent months so I have been playing mainly Omaha and very little Texas Holdem. 6 card Omaha is a lot of fun but extremely volatile and can result in very large swings. I went on a major downswing in December and had to play my way through it. The dip is finally over so I may have some more time for Aurora :)

Just as an example of how frustrating Poker can be, here are a couple of hands from the last two months. Note that in Omaha you have to use two cards from your hand and three from the board.

1st one is five card Omaha. Pre-flop there is about £100 in the pot. Flop is AT5 with two spades. I have AKQJ9, giving me a wrap and the nut flush draw. I pot it for £100. Jacket calls. Turn is an 8 of hearts, which gives me an ever bigger wrap, the nut flush draw spades and the second nut flush draw in hearts. I pot for £300 and Jacket calls. River is 2 of clubs. I assume Jacket is on some type of draw too so I bluff for £500. He insta-calls, saying he made a full house. Unfortunately he is high, very drunk and has misread his hand but still has bottom two pair, which wins a £1900 (almost $3000) pot! Sigh!

2nd one is a £5-£10 No limit holdem game with an optional £25 straddle. Very aggressive. I have a stack of £1000, which is a short stack for this game. I get KJ hearts, which is the best hand I have seen in a while. Neal Channing limps, Unknown Player limps, The Mole raises in late, I call, Channing calls and unknown calls. There is about £250 in the pot. Flop is K86 rainbow. Everyone checks to The Mole who makes a pot size bet. His range is very wide here so I ship in for £1000. Channing and Unknown fold and The Mole insta-calls, announcing two pair. However, he misread the board and thought the king was a jack. He has J6, giving him bottom pair J kicker against my top pair J kicker. Of course the river is another six and he wins a £2200 ($3500) pot on a misread and a two-outer. Double sigh!

In that first example, does he not have to play with what he called? So even though he did have a winning hand, since he called on the losing combination he loses?

Glad to hear your still kicking :)

Steve,

I am not sure I could handle that sort of stress losing that sort of money at any stage, how do you do it?

Hell in my profession I think the stress is killing me, but atleast the stress points are once or twice every couple of months not every day.

All casinos I have played in use the 'Cards Speak' rule. Which means whatever the player says he has, the actual cards determine his hand. It is up to the dealer or the other players to point out if he has a better hand (or worse hand) than he thinks.

You get used to it :). One of the biggest weaknesses a poker player can have is going on 'Tilt', when they get upset or stressed out about losing. Last Friday my best poker-playing friend played a $6000 pot badly against me (because he was extremely drunk) and won and then proceeded to laugh at me (a lot!). If you can't deal with that without getting upset, you can't play winning poker at this level. In fact this friend (Dhanesh) is an expert at 'verbals', putting people on Tilt by making fun of them, or berating them or sometimes just being being deliberately obnoxious :). It's not my style but it works as he is also a professional player.

However, almost all of my regular opponents are very good friends. It might seem strange to spend most of your work time having a very good time chatting and laughing with great friends while simultaneously doing your best to take all their money but that's my life :). For example, on New Year's Eve, I was invited out by a friend of mine called Abed to his very nice Italian restaurant. Myself and my wife Linda spent the evening with Abed and his wife Wendy, eating great food and drinking large quantities of great wine and champagne, all on the house. I know Abed because he loses a lot of money to me at the poker table :). My natural style at the table is to be friendly and chatty so that people are relaxed and don't get upset at losing money to me, which is pretty much the polar opposite of Dhanesh's approach. In fact, my experience is that the higher stakes you play, the generally more friendly and relaxed your opponents are. The big egos, trouble-makers and and show-offs are usually playing the low stakes tables because none of those personalities will last long in a decent standard cash game, especially with expert wind-up merchants at the table ;)

The best thing about my profession though is that I have total freedom in my life. I don't pay income tax (as poker winnings are non-taxable in the uk), I play when I want, take time off when I want, get up when I feel like it and go on vacation at a moment's notice. I don't have to rely on employees, put up with annoying bosses or search for customers. For all that freedom, a little stress is well worth it.
