Cost effective point-defense against AMM spam?

I was wondering what others have found to be effective for stopping large number of AMM.

The two obvious competing options are turreted Gauss cannons and railguns.
I suppose another option is using long range lasers to get multiple shots off but this seem not very cost effective (Assuming here the purpose is only to provide fleet point-defense.)

The main thing that I am wondering about is whether quality or quantity turns out to be better.


For instance with railguns we can increase the hit chance by making the ship faster, but this is expensive. Similarly, high speed turrets are expensive. So I was wondering if it might actually be more cost effective to just mount a massive number of railguns on relatively slow ships that would be effectively 'flak barges'. Simply putting out massive amounts of low accuracy shots.

It also seems that a large volume of low accuracy of fire benefits hugely from the 'Max Tracking Time Bonus vs Missiles'. If this behaves as described here (http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=5280.0) this could potentially more than double the effectiveness of low accuracy (< 25% hit chance) point defense fire.

How about gaus or laser fighters? That will give you a nice screen and if you put a few shields on the ship it can take hits from AMMs

On top of that, fighter commanders can impart a "Fighter Combat Bonus", which increases accuracy by a significant amount for fighter weapon platforms. 50% fighter combat bonus is not insignificant, either, so you're going to get some pretty good accuracy.
Getting the reduced-size/high speed fire controls for fighter sized vessels will also improve cost-effectiveness, and having your weapons firing from many different fire controls at once means you can actually engage multiple salvos at once.

Beyond this point, I suggest putting significant energy shielding on your ships, particularly the ones you expect to be hit the most. Mainly because it'll do a right good job at absorbing leakers over a long period of time if their mags are particularly deep.

I'm actually tempted to make 1 armorball ship, and one fuel and energy-shield-laden energyball ship and see which tanks AMM better at particular tonnages.

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Unarmoured because most internals aren't any more expensive per HTK than armour while doing something useful (and crew are a renewable resource).
Note that many slow-tracking railguns have different limitations than sophisticated Gauss turrets:
Salvo dispersion is easier to deal with because additional fire controls cost much less.
Superior ECM is much harder to deal with.

I think Sheb meant using cap 3 tech on the railguns so that they had ROF 5 instead of 15, but there does also exist spoiler tech (advanced railguns) which gives 5 shots per salvo per railgun.

I had the capacitor tech to make it fire every round, but decided against it.

Just increasing the weapon RoF would do little, I'd also need more fire controls, the 10k ship with almost 3x the effective firepower under ideal circumstances would have been considerably more expensive.
I preferred to go with something more cost-effiicient on average: identical capability against single large salvos, with the ability to "defend" adequately against sustained AMM fire simply by tanking some hits, thanks to a high percentage of cheap&bulky components.

These were mostly peacetime designs. Requiring very little dedicated military tech, cheap to build, cheap to operate, training my naval personnel while keeping colonies happy,  and still very useful when there's fighting to be done... sort of an armourball with benefits despite having no armour.
Their main drawback is that they tie up a lot of naval shiypard capacity for their capability, not appropriate when time > money.

I'm pretty sure that if you use final defensive fire a single fire control can take out practically infinite salvos. Of course if you also want to use it offensively you'll need to delink and delink fire controls which can get annoying, but there's no practical reason why you can't have massed beam weapons on one control for PD.

That is incorrect.
I just tested it again to be sure: 2 stationary ships 40k apart, each armed with 3 quad Gauss turrets  (6 shots per barrel)  linked to a single fire control, one of them also sporting 2 CIWS. Defenses set to final fire mode at 50k.
10 very slow salvos of one missile each were fired at one of them repeatedly. Depending one which ship was targeted, either 2 or 4 were intercepted.

So: Each fire control or CIWS targets a single salvo. Ships don't need to be in exactly the same spot for final fire to work.

The first ships swatted down 1 missile and were hit 9 times, the last ships culled 3 missiles and were hit 7 times. 
So is that with the first ships having 3 gauss cannons on a single control, and the last group with one control per cannon?

Yes, Defender-1 (Graf Spee to the Federation) had one FC, Defender-3 (Köln) had 3, one linked to each turret.

Well you will see massed laser defences in action "Wall of Light, Hull of Duranium" when I can stop being distracted by Stellaris or HoI4.  I use multiple fire controls on point defence ships generally and so far have stuck to the Dual Purpose Point Defence Array concept.  The trouble is fighting so seriously up a tech slope makes anything difficult.  You basically live on the binary distribution.

The combination of counter missiles, area point defence, final fire point defence works very well.  I would like to add armed small craft to that as they can be stationed far enough out to thin out the inbounds.

The trouble with large numbers of small missiles is that you need a lot of turrets firing on them.  So against a super salvo of 52 inbound magics the NCN is looking to have at least 104 lasers firing in point defence.  That requires 6 CLEs (12*6 = 72) plus another 34 (or in general 17 more standard combattents) arrays in support range.  Combined with 1-1 counter missile fire this probably will result in up to half the volley being stopped.  But that still means scragged ships.  The good thing is that the lasers fire every 5 seconds so each volley gets atritted.  The trouble is that small missiles move fast and that cuts your accuracy to the bone (targeting + turret speed of 12K km/s versus inbounds at 50K km/s) plus you need to see them coming in far enough out to get targeting bonuses plus to enable your counter missiles to be in space to hit the target.

As for cost if it works then the cost is "effective" if it doesn't work then the cost is "ineeffective" in my view.
