Graveyard of Ships- Gliese 109
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:38:01 PM »
So, the year is 2112, and my second squadron is preceding inwards to the core of the Gliese 109 system.

Historical:
Gliese 109 is the home system of the United Kingdom of Milerton. It is four jumps away from Sol, and a single jump from the Terran colony system of Alaska. The system supports one earth like primary planet, Milerton, which while possessing a breathable atmosphere, it is severly  cold, even before the nuclear winter set in. There was also a colony set up on a second planet, much warmer than Milerton, it had a reducing atmosphere, and was a domed mining colony.

The Terran Confederation had discovered Gliese 109 on June 2nd, 2107 after tracking back scout ships from the Fleshlough Khanate, who were encountered on the 28th of April 2107 in the neighboring Alaska system. Peaceful contact was established with the Khanate, and after agreeing to continue to improve diplomatic relations, the Khanate ship went back to surveying. The Khanate ship made no attempt to conceal its movements, and passive sensors tracked it back to a warp point leading to Gliese by the end of May, 2107.

When Terran survey vessels probed the Gliese 109 system, they were immediately hailed by warships of the United Kingdom of Milerton. Despite an initially tense exchange, peaceful relations were established. While the ship remained on station, passive sensors began recording a full scale military engagement between the UKoM navy and elements of the navy of the Fleshlough Khanate. The actions were savage, with the two sides pressing in to point blank range and volleying missiles and beams into each others ship in close orbit of the Milerton homeworld.

Within a month, there were dozens of shattered wrecks littering the system, and the naval units of both sides had been reduced from their previous significant size, to a pale shadow. Where the Milerton's had fielded several cruisers and destroyers, they were down to two damaged destroyers and a handful of FAC craft. Nuclear strikes had been carried out on the Milerton homeworld and they population was clearly suffering.

Humanitarian concerns lead to a treaty of understanding being signed with the Milerton government, and within a year trade relations between the powers soon were established.

In 2110, Terran freighters reported a naval engagement between the UKoM Navy and an unknown alien race. The UKoM governement issued statements that they had engaged a new alien race, who had probed one of their warp points, and fired upon UKoM vessels when contacted. The UKoM confirmed it had destroyed the enemy alien scouting party for the loss of three FACs.

Due to the extensive damage and debris scattered around the system, the UKoM government and the Terran Confederacy signed an agreement to have Terran salvaging vessels start clearing the wreckage. Terran salvagers were not to salvage UKoM vessels, but the ships of the Khanate and the unknown race were fair game.

In July of 2111, a large force of the unknown race invaded the Gliese system and proceeded to shatter the UKoM navy in a series of running engagements, the conflict spread out over several months, ending in a brutal battle in orbit over the Milerton homeworld. The Milerton navy was smashed, and nuclear strikes were carried out by the victorious aliens. At the time, a Terran salvager had been operating in the system with an accompanying freighter clearing wreckage.

As the hostilities were winding down, the Terran freighter and salvage vessel began to run for the Alaska warp point, in an attempt to get clear of the fighting. Within days, a small task force of alien ship approached and hailed the lumbering civilian ships. First contact with the new aliens occured on the 9th of December, 2111.

Communications with the new alien race, the Issa Empire, were quickly established, and by the 20th of January, 2112, full communications were in effect.

The Issa demanded all salvage be turned over to them, as well as the handing over of Milerton civilian shipping still in Terran space. The Confederation government refused, and a the Issa responded by destroying the Terran salvager and freighter, with a loss of all hands on the unarmed civilian ships.

On August 9th, 2112, the Confederation 2nd Cruiser Squadron transited into the Gliese 109 system and engaged Issa vessels guarding the Gliese 109 to Alaska warp point. Two Issa cruisers and two destroyers were destroyed, for the loss of a single Terran anti-missile destroyer, and damage on the Argonaut, an area defense cruiser. The 2nd CruRon pushed into the system and destroyed a further two Issa heavy cruisers, with no losses, but expended the majority of their missiles. At that point, Admiral Jessica Jaime made the decision to retreat and rearm at Sol. It was also discovered that the Issa had landed forces on both Milerton and the Milerton colony, capturing both worlds.

The 1st Cruiser Squadron was dispatched and entered the Gliese 109 system on the 13th of September at 21:05. Two more Issa heavy cruisers were detected and engaged, but the their destruction came at the cost of the better part of the on board magazines of the missile cruisers and destroyers in the squadron.

Issa lifepods were recovered, along with crew, and this time Issa senior offices were captured. Data over Issa jump drives and the detail of the neighboring Issa system of 107 Piscium were recovered.

As of 11:07 September 14th, 2112, the situation in Gliese 109 is as follows;

Are you playing all races or are you just filling in the gaps between communication rolls and the actions of the NPRs?

Keep writing :)

Just the Terrans. I did have the designer mode pwd when I started and used that to get things configured. Mostly changing ship names and themes to match up. Since the last patch or so, the pwd has changed and I haven't bothered to get the new one.

Looking at the other NPR's, the Issa Empire really aren't nice folks. The United Kingdom of Milerton were pretty nice innoffensive types who go steamrollered by the Issa, and the Khanate are pretty opportunistic.

Currently, the rest of the "filler" is just me explaining away the missing sections, more or less logically. The salvager was actually just in system grabbing loot when the Issa showed up. Highly unlikely to happen without and understanding in place with the UKoM, so I just roleplayed it in. :)

FLASHTRAFFIC
12-9-2112 23:35
2nd Cruiser Squadron
Force Commander Sharon Zhu
Gliese 109
OPSUM: Squadron engaged
ENEMY: 2x Garuda CA (15,800 tons), 2x Righteous Fist CA (15,800 tons), 1x Alacritious Mission FG (7,900 tons)

ACTION:
2nd Cruiser Squadron (2/CruRon) detected an Issa cruiser squadron at 19:37 making way for the Alaska jump point at 3716 kms. 2/CruRon moved to intercept and engaged enemy squadron with missiles at 31 m/km. The SS-N-4-B has significantly more range capability, at 45 m/km, but sensors were unable to achieve a solid targeting solution until 31 m/km. Respectfully suggest prioritization of development in active sensor technologies.

Initial target was Garuda 003. Six volleys of ASM's were fired at the target, target was struck by first three volleys of SS-N-4-B Gato II ASM. Target then exploded violently. Lifepods were detected. Remaining missiles went to automatic seek mode and targeted Righteous Fist 002 and Alacritious Mission 002. Righteous Fist 002 streamed atmosphere after two volleys struck. Two volleys struck Alactritious Mission 002 and crippled her, with drive fields down.

Return fire from the enemy was heavy. Salvos of 8 and 14 missiles each were detected. Anti missiles were deployed at 2.6 m/km. AMM ratios were 26% average. Enemy missile velocity was higher than the standard AA-2 missiles deployed.

Initially volleys were stopped by AMM fire. Subsequent volleys managed to push into point defense range. CA Absolution and CA Issac Asimov were both targeted and lost shields. Armor damage was moderate on both ships. No internal damage. Crew injuries on Absolution were minor. Crew injuries on Issac Asimov were one serious casualty, thirteen minor. No fatalities.

Enemy Righteous Fist 002 the second target. She was targeted with eight volleys, four struck during the exchange and destroyed the target. Lifepods detected. Remaining missile salvos targeted Righteous Fist 003 and Garuda 002. Garuda 002 was struck repeatedly, her speed dropped from 3716 km/s to 960 kms. Enemy squadron ran out of ordinance after sixteen volleys. Remaining enemy mobile vessels attempted to disengage.

Garuda 002 was stuck by a single volley of missiles and exploded attempting to disengage at 20:44.
Alacritious Mission 002 was destroyed by railgun fire at 21:34 after refusing to surrender. Lifepods were deployed.
Righteous Fist 003 was run down and destroyed at 22:03 after refusing to surrender. Lifepods were deployed and recovered.

AFTER ACTION:
2/CruRon is currently returning to Alaska to recover the detached squadron colliers and tanker. 2/CruRon will then return to Sol for additonal munitions and repairs on Issac Asimov and Absolution. Issa Empire lifepods have been recovered and crews interrogated. One of the recovered crewman was an ordinance NCO, who turned over details for an older Issa ASM, referenced as the Aimak class. The Issa missile is 4100 km/s slower than our Gato class ASM, but packs a warhead with 50% more yield.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Commanding officer recommends citations and decorations for the captains and crews of ES Gustavus Adolphus and ES George Bush. Particular note: The George Bush showed exceptional performance, her captain positioned her in front of the squadron on his own initiative. Lt. Maximo Lares deserves particular commendation for his crews performance, averaging 7 missiles downed volley from her two turrets.

The Griffin Mk II escorts performed exceptionally well in combat. Recommend an additional ship, or pair of ships for all squadrons.

Currently advantages over the Issa Empire are speed and range. Our ships are running at military standard 5000 km/s. The Issa have shown best speeds of 3716 km/s. Our range advantage in missile technology is at least 15 m/km, but our sensor technology is not permitting us to take full advantage of that yet.

Disadvantages: Issa warhead technology appears superior to ours. The last engagement demonstrated missile technology that was faster that our standard ASM, and with a warhead yield 25% greater than our own. Facing large waves of those ASM's will be troubling for our squadrons.

Due to Issa missile speed, the Confederation needs to improve our sensor speed to maximize our range advantage, as well as devise a new AMM that is faster and more capable of intercepting the Issa ASM's. In the mean time, recommendations are that we deploy additional Griffin Mk II vessels with all squadrons for anti-missile defense.

I suspect it may have been a surrender. The colony is showing as UKoM, but the homeworld is listed as an Issa Empire population, but ethnically, they are all Milerton. Since the Issa did shoot the place up, I suspect they surrendered. The nuclear winter on Milerton is pretty severe, so they got glassed pretty good.

It's possible for NPRs to attack with ground units.   Though oddly.

I suspect NPRs can somehow use Precursor troops transports to move their troops. I had a couple brigades of non-Precursor troops landed at Earth that way once.

**A GNN SPECIAL NEWS REPORT**
The holoscreen crackles with a grainy and static brushed image of a middle aged Terran in cold weather gear, behind him, a ruined cityscape lies partially obscured in snow
"This is Trevor Howard, on location in Gliese 109, the infamous "Graveyard of Ships""

"The Terran Confederation Navy Cruiser Squadron 1, under Force Commander Alexander Ahrns, entered the Gliese 109 system in May, and engaged in a running fleet action with three different Issa Empire squadrons, defeating them all in detail."

The holoscreen fills with a system schematic of the Gliese 109 system. The system glows balefully with the orange markers denoting wrecks. A blue icon appears a jump point and moves in system. Three different red icons converge on the blue dot, only to disappear one at a time. After the last red dot winks out, the image of the reporter flashes back up.

"After the destruction of the Issa fleet elements, Confederation Command troopships began landing forces on an uninhabited portion of the main northern continent of Milerton Prime."

The screen fills with front line footage of Confederation Army troops in power armor and heavier armored vehicles advancing through a shattered wintry landscape. Sporadic combat screens flash past as the reporters voice over continues.

"As of 17:12 29th Ocotober, 2115, the Army of the Terran Confederation liberated the United Kingdom of Milertons home world from occupation by the Issa Empire. After three months of sporadic skirmishing, two full divisions, the 1st Division "Iron Brigade" and the 2nd Division "The Spartans" moved in and brushed aside small Issa police units and remnants of the garrison forces to liberate the world."

The holoscreen centers on the reporter, then focus on the the shattered urban area behind him. Confederaton troops can be seen in the background helping the native population, distributing food and cold weather gear.

"Bob, Terry, I cannot tell you how horrified we and the troops are by the wanton cruelty inflicted on the Milerton by the Issa. Clear evidence of wanton and deliberate genocide is everywhere to be seen. Massive nuclear strikes against population centers and industrial areas has left the Milerton economy and species, a shadow of what it once was. Radiation sickness is rampant, as fully 35% of the planet is suffering from high intensity radiation exposure. Atmospheric dust has cooled the planet by 28.72 degrees. Amazingly some industry is intact, but where factories number in thousands before the invasion, a paltry two hundred is all that remains. The rest of the industry shows similar signs of destruction.

A montage of shattered cities and towns is slowly replaced by the shots of large open pits. It takes a moment to realize, but its filled with the bodies of adult and juvenile Milertons. Another slow panorama shot shows one of the Issa internment camps, behind the Issa hab shelters, stacks of frozen Milerton corpses can be seen, stacked like firewood.

"The suffering of the population dwarfs the economic disparity. Where the Milertons have a population over a billion before, only 377 million remain, but with the massive drop in global temperatures and starvation induced by crop failure, the population is dwindling rapidly. The UKM government had stockpiled infrastructure on the planet for off-world colonies, and now it is being pressed into service to save the population. Massive humanitarian relief is being shipped in from Earth, but projections are that even with all that can be shipped in every available hull, the Confederation will only be able to save 248 million Milertons."

"The existing Milerton government has petitioned the Confederation for humanitarian aid and material assistance, as well as request formal entry into the Confederation. While the Milerton government in exile is duly recognized by the Confederation, the Milerton population has a very negative view of them. The local Milerton population displays a great deal of antipathy for the former government who the belie abandoned them in the face of the Issa threat. "

The holoscreen centers on the reporter again. He is obviously upset by the scenes he has witnessed.

"It is painfully clear, after the unprovoked attack by the Issa on Terran Confederation cargo and salvage vessels in this system, that the Issa see us as their next conquest. If we don't want to end up like Milerton, the Confederation MUST see this war through to the end, and see the Issa Empire destroyed!"

"This is Trevor Howard, Gliese 109, signing off for now".

Screen fades

Very nice write up, any chance you can post some of your ship designs so we can see what you are fighting with?

So are you planning on handing back the planet or are you going to keep it permanently liberated?

Per request, Jane's Ships of the Terran Confederation (circa Gliese 109 conflict)

1st Cruiser Squadron (1 CruRon)
CA Issac Asimov- Ironsides Mk II
CA Absolution- Transgressor Mk II
CA Bat - Falcon Mk II
CA Falcon- Falcon Mk II
CO Fort George- Shieldbearer Mk II
CLE Ajax- Aegis Mk II
CLE Agamemmnon- Aegis Mk II (LOST IN ACTION)
ES George Bush- Griffin Mk II
ES Gustavus Adolphus- Griffin Mk II
DD Balrog- Fury Mk II
DD Basilisk- Fury Mk II
FF Cabot- Corsair Mk II
FF Claude Auchinleck- Corsair Mk II
TK Camel 001- Camel

Command Cruiser, Ironsides class, 1 per CruRon.
The Ironsides II is a stopgap design rushed into service due to the Issa War. The ship lacks current generation missile launchers, which slows is rate of fire. It also lacks modern missile fire control, which prevents it from taking advantage of the full range of the current Gato II ASMs. It was rushed to service at the onset of hostilities to take advantage of the advances in engine and armoring. It is scheduled to be replaced with the modern Ironsides III design in a matter of months. Despite its knon shortcomings, it has proven to be a solid and reliable class, and well equipped to defend itself against Precursor and Issa attacks.

Primary Missile Cruiser, the Falcon (2 per CruRon)
The Falcon class is the workhorse cruiser of the Confederation fleet. Much like the current generation of the Ironsides, the current Falcon was rushed into combat, and lacks modern targeting systems for its Gato II ASM's, which limits its effective range. The Falcons are scheduled for an upgrade to the Mk III version to correct that issue, as well as adding more modern engines and other efficiencies.

Beam Cruiser, Transgressor class, 1 per CruRon
The policy of including a close action cruiser in all squadrons paid major dividends for the Confederation in the Gliese 109 campaign. After transit, CruRon 1 came under immediate beam attack by Issa forces. Once targetting systems came back online, the Transgressors proved themselves admirable. Their high rate of fire, coupled with their hitting power, smashed the Issa ships at the jump point. The current Transgressor class is scheduled for upgrades to more efficient engines and newer fire control systems.

Close Escort/Anti-Missile escort, Griffin class, 2 per CruRon
The Griffin class performed outstandingly in the Gliese 109 campaign. Immediately after jump into the system, the Griffins were some of the first ships to fire on Issa forces. Their high rate of fire from their large Gauss turrets ripped Issa shields down almost instantly and let the larger railguns of the fleet pound Issa hulls within seconds of firing commencing. The Griffins proved themselves again as the fleet moved in system, serving as the last line of defense against missile attack. Both Griffins performed admirably, smashing any missiles that made it through the anti-missile envelope around the fleet.

Missile Destroyer, Fury class, 2 per CruRon
The Fury is the workhorse of the Navy. Used for fleet duties, pickets, and screens, the Fury class is one of the most recognized Naval vessels. The Fury has been a solid design, but is showing its age. The Navy refit program has them scheduled for upgrades to engines, fire control, and sensors, and should improve the service life of one of the oldest classes in Naval service.

Close action frigate, Corsair class, 2 per CruRon
Along with the Transgressor, all Confederation squadrons now include two Corsair class ships. This policy proved itself in the Gliese 109 campaign, as the Corsairs savaged enemy vessels at the Gliese 109/Alaska jump point assault. The Corsairs have also proven useful in detached duty, running down crippled ships and finishing off stragglers. The Corsairs are scheduled for a refit in the next few years to bring them up to modern standards.

Why do you have both 10, 12 and 15 cm railguns on ships? Is it just for size constraints - you want to be able to fire at multiple targets simultaneously but can't afford to use three 15cm railguns?

And yes, a very nice story. Keep us updated on what's going on with the Issa!

Im liking this story as far as the 15mm guns i might guess a tech or space fitting issue
