The Coalition - AAR
« on: August 20, 2012, 03:51:40 PM »
Nevermind, go ahead and post comments and suggestions in this thread.

Hi all, I'm starting a AAR about the remnants of a once mighty Earth Empire.
This game will start out at relatively high tech levels (Magneto-Plasma engines) but low industrial capability for the starting population (5 billion). When I encounter NPRs, I might name them and refer to them as if they are the rising empires of other human factions, (e.g., if I encounter the Goavelha, I might call them to Chinese).

Prelude:    Prelude: In the distant past, the proud humans of Earth unlocked the secrets of Trans-Newtonian technology. Following this great breakthrough, the various factions of Earth raced to explore and exploit the vast riches of the heavens. After a few territorial wars, the existence of Jump Points was discovered, and the factions funneled all of their resources into expanding beyond the Sol system. Eventually, Earth was abandoned by the twenty odd empires that now lay claim to vast swathes of the Universe. As these empires became ever more conscious of the danger posed by their competitors from Earth, a small series of territorial skirmishes broke out. The leaders of these empires, pressured by their populaces and policy makers, let the small skirmishes bloom into all-out war between the great empires of Earth. The weakest empires were annihilated, and entire sectors of space were left burnt out husks, all remnants of the once great civilizations that had stood there blasted into nothing by the mighty weapons of the Great Empires. And then, at their darkest hour, they came. Hundreds of black ships, moving at speeds unheard of, with weapons the likes of which the Great Empires had never conceived. They came through rifts in the very fabric of space itself, sparing nothing that they found, they destroyed everything that their mighty warships discovered. Realizing the hopelessness of their situation, the leaders of the Great Empires secreted themselves away in the corners of the Universe, hoping that they would not be found by the fearsome Invaders. Most were found and destroyed, and humanity was almost completely forgotten by the universe. But in one far off, dead end system thought to be home to nothing but dust, the last remnants of the Russian Coalition survived. There they had built a small colony, restricting themselves to the use of conventional technologies to avoid detection, and going so far as to cull the population to reduce their sensor signatures, the Russian Coalition survived in the lonely dead end system of Bastion.
The paranoid leaders of the Coalition had established hidden mineral stockpiles deep beneath the surface on a variety of asteroids and other bodies in the system. Although long since forgotten, these caches contain large amounts of almost all of the Trans-Newtonian minerals. Bastion Prime itself is home to the final mineral stocks of the Coalition, and its scientist’s works are all secreted away in the Great Library. After deep space scans showed no evidence of the unique radiation signature of the Invaders, the inhabitants of Bastion Prime have finally decided to begin rebuilding their once mighty empire. In the centuries since the Russian Coalition ruled the stars from Alpha Centauri to Procyon, they have forgotten much, and the detonation of the experimental resonance bomb has realigned their systems Jump Points with the unknown. Ruins of the ancient bunkers still exist in some places in Bastion, and the library, although much of the information stored in it has decayed into useless fragments, still contains a wealth of technical knowledge. In expectation of the rise, the people have reorganized government, stockpiled minerals and begun rebuilding their Trans-Newtonian industry, preparing for Russia’s rise into the stars… Again.

     Part 1 (January 1st, 2525 - January 1st, 2526):

January 1st, 2525: The Coalition launches its first TN vessels, the Geo and Gravsurvey ships Andromeda, Austrini, Centauri, and Lalande, as well as 19 small craft, 8 each of railgun and missile armed FACs, and 3 scouts. They are organized into the 1st and 2nd FAC Squadrons, each one with 4 railgun armed and 4 missile armed FACs with a single scout to provide sensor coverage. The third scout forms the 1st Scout Squadron. They begin training immediately, while the survey groups begin surveying the Bastion system. 1st Advisor of the Council Vladik Sokolov, the nominal head of state accompanies their launch with a speech that as the Russian Coalition officially represents all factions of Earth now that it is the allegedly last surviving one, it will be renamed to the Coalition.

March 4th, 2525: The gravsurvey group discovers a jump point, which is assumed to be the only one in the system from the records, but one of the ships is left in Bastion to scan the other points just in case.
March 5th, 2525: CNS Andromeda transits JP1 to discover the system of Ross 154. Ross 154 A-III is the only planet with any colonization potential, at 2.11 colony cost with small amounts of methane and a temperature just below -70 degrees Celsius. Andromeda will remain in system to check for jump points after checking the worlds for any sign of life. There is a jump gate on the Ross 154 side of the jump point, a rather ominous sign.
April 6th, 2525: Commander Karen Prokhorov was killed in an accident when a section of ceiling fell on her, killing Karen instantly during her graduation ceremony from Bastion Prime’s Fleet Academy. Governor Fjodor Tereschenko attends her funeral. A tragic day for the Coalition.
May 9th, 2525: Governonr Fjodor attends boot camp at the Fort Moscow, named in honor of the ancestral capital of the Russian Coalition. The enlistment numbers reach record highs. Aloyoshenka Kashin, a respected logistician, although not assigned to any project, perfects his skill building a self repairing suit of power armor in his garage.
August 5th, 2525: Ivonova Mironov’s team completes research into improving cloak field generator’s efficiency, unfortunately the breakthrough comes just as Captain Catarina Borodin is diagnosed with leukemia.
September 7th, 2525: An archaeology team lead by Captain Godava Antonov finally breaks the encryption sealing the old bunker on Bastion Prime, and discover that as many as seven installations may be recoverable. The geosurvey craft Centauri is ordered to pick them up to investigate the ruins on the inner planet.
September 11th, 2525: The xenoarchaeology team lead by Captain Antonov is dropped off on Bastion A-I, and begin to investigate the ruined outpost. The Makayev Armaments Naval Shipyard completes a small capacity expansion project.
October 11th, 2525: Captain Gregori Illyin is killed in a tragic accident on the firing range when his rifle overloads, vaporizing him. Governor Tereschenko is unable to attend his funeral due to family commitments.
November 12th, 2525: The Coalition lays down the keels of it first warships, the Skory class Frigate Leaders Skory and Kholmsk, the Kara class Missile Frigates Kara and Yaroslav, and the Kiev class Escort Frigate Kiev. Thanks to stockpiled parts they will all be completed by early 2526, and then another Kara and two more Kievs are planned.

I suppose you already created the systems, am i right? If not, a single JP can be a dead end.

Btw, good work, keep up!

   Part 2 (January 1st, 2526 - January 1st, 2527):

January 12th, 2526: After failing its second attempt to reactivate ancient facilities on Bastion Prime, a team of “Motivational Specialists” are dispatched to the 1st Mechanical Brigade.
January 13th, 2526: The Coalition Small Craft Naval Construction Yards in orbit of Bastion Prime complete a slipway expansion and begin construction of more Moskva-S scouts. Captain of the Line Vladik Tereschenko, nephew of Governor Tereschenko, suffers a severe concussion after forgetting to strap in before ordering full acceleration. Captain of the Line Vitaliy Gavrilov was confirmed to have contracted cancer the same day.
January 14th, 2526: The 1st Scout Squadron takes up position on the Bastion-Ross 154 jump point to monitor traffic. Kiev, Kara, and Skory are launched, Governor Tereschenko is unable to attend their christening as he is visiting his nephew in the hospital. They will wait in orbit for their sister ships before beginning training.  Ensign Vladimir Pokrovsky causes a series of fatal overloads when he spills coffee on his control panel aboard the CNA Andromeda, rendering one of the gravitational survey sensors inoperable. The ships electrician is able to fix the damage, thankfully, and Ensign Pokrovsky is scheduled to be transferred to prison guard duty as soon as he returns to Bastion Prime.
April 19th, 2526: The Kiev class Escort Frigate Yaroslav is constructed at the Corvara Propulsion Sciences Naval Shipyard. Another 4 Kievs and 2 Karas are scheduled for production.
June 15th, 2526: The last planned ship of the Skory class, Kholmsk is completed. Thanks to the efforts of the “motivational specialists”, the 1st Mechanical Brigade completes their first successful reactivation, bringing a construction factory back to fully operational status, followed almost immediately by the activation of a bio-shelter capable of supporting life in the harshest conditions.
July 14th, 2526: Rear Admiral Olev Gagarin’s Geology team uncovers a massive lode of boronide on Bastion Prime, the tooling for the Borodino class Freighter is completed an two are laid down, and Scientist Yelena Zuyev builds a robot to help her around the lab, dramatically increasing her efficiency.
September 12th, 2526: Ilya Lebedev, commander of the 1st Battalion of Royal Dragoons is shot in the arm by accident during a training exercise, although she survives, her elbow no longer has as much freedom of movement. 2 additional battalions of both Royal Dragoons and Motor Riflemen are trained. Captain Elizarova Vasilyev holds a combat drill, and Commander Shurik Ivanov allegedly bribes several officers to get out of the naval academy.
October 10th, 2526: Grisha Iliyev, a renowned scientist, spills a vial containing a rare, terminal disease on herself, although she has at least 10 years left by the doctors estimates.  Construction begins on Petr Velikiy, the 4th Kiev class Escort Frigate.
November 16th, 2526: After a shipboard seminar on surveys aboard one of the Moskva-A FACs, Captain Boris Lavrov was inspired to research more about their operation and recently held a drill on the topic.
December 19th, 2526: Governor Tereschenko reorganized and cleaned his office, boosting his efficiency and letting him manage much more. Early estimates indicate he could manage an entire sector! In an orbital laboratory designed to simulate conditions aboard a TN spacecraft, researcher Agnessa Polyakov’s team discovered a new more efficient way to design salvaging modules.

The next update should be up soon, I had to regen the system out of Bastions single JP a few times to make sure I didn't end up with a dead end. So, please disregard anything that mentions Ross 154 above here.

When I was skipping through systems searching for one with a few good JPs, I may have skipped through about a year  ;). So, 2527, in a few words: new freighters and geosurvey craft were completed, all but one Kiev of the fleet was completed, most of the FAC training was completed, an auto mine was recovered on Bastion A-1, more mercassium was discovered on Bastion Prime... not much happened.
Turn 3 will start 2528.
