Surveyor Management
« on: September 18, 2015, 04:42:17 PM »
I've noticed that surveying seems to become more and more of a micromanagement task as the game rolls on. I build more survey ships, send the to more places to scan bodies/survey points and around the time that I have 8 of them in operation it gets painful to manage each task group. Even with conditional orders really.

I was curious what others use, if anything, to attempt to more effectively manage survey ships to perhaps reduce the amount of micromanagement necessary. Thanks!

Conditional orders my friend.

Then you just need to send them to a system. They do the work. You get an event message when it's done.

Probably also want orders to refuel and repair... Just sayin'

Allow me to ask a more specific question: If I have a TG of 5 survey ships, is there a way to order the whole TG to a system, then to automatically split up and do their scanning, then to reform back together?

If you look at the orders you can give, yes there is exactly the order you are looking for. But for the reforming part, you have to mess with a conditional/secondary order

There is the auto-split, but you will need to manually issue the reform order. I think. It has been a while.

I send em off, with tanker support, and conditional orders. I forget about them until i get the system surveyed message (or something attacks them  ;D ).  When i get tired of fussing with them i park them for a while.

the minimum micro method is to only use one survey ship of a given type per star system at a time, and make sure htey have built in jump drives and looong crew/fuel endurance.

I'm late, but if you still see this, look here for a tutorial on survey carriers: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=7826.0
This is the easiest way I have found to automatically survey a system with any number of independent units, and in maybe under 10 clicks too. I tried a lot of approaches over different games, but only do it this way since I figured that out.

I use the same method as TheDeadlyShoe: independent, long-range/endurance, jump-equipped ships. Give 'em conditional orders and let 'em work. Minimal micromanagement, and I think they are fairly cost effective too. I tried the "Survey Carrier" method once, and I don't think they are very cost-effective, and managing launch/recovery was too fiddly for me. YMMV...

That said, survey management is still a pain, eventually. My limit is usually 10 grav and 10 geo survey ships.

I use a rather unusual method, a 13-ship task force I call the GravSurvRon.  It has 1 command ship, 2 corvettes, 2 survey support ships, and 8 GSVs.  The command ship and the two corvettes are the HQ TG, while the other ships are each in their own TG.  All are set so their lead fleet is the HQ TG.  To move, you simply give the HQ TG orders and then go to the second tab and tell it to copy orders to all subordinate units.  There's a bit of micromanagement to make sure the system is surveyed efficiently (so that you don't have one GSV coming from across the system to survey a point right next to one who just finished up), but it's not too bad, and it's very fast.  The GSVs are independent, and don't dock aboard the command ship.  The survey support ships make first transits on new JPs, and the corvettes are to clear out any minor bad guys that might be lurking.  I'll post the specs later.

Situational orders are your friend, also, I bit the bullet and just built a single class of science vessel.    One Geo sensor, one grav sensor so they can do both geo and grav seaches - and still small, I pair them up with a scout ship that can take 3-4 of the small scouts with them on a jump, and then just order them to split on last jump and send them on there way.    they reform on the survey jump ship after finishing.

I should probably add that for geosurvey, I went with the single-ship model.  I tried squadrons at one point, but they were near-useless because of the variability of the geosurvey targets.  At the moment, I have 18 of these, which work quite well:
