I've had limited experience in combat in Aurora, however, I have at least a fundamental grasp of how the Combat Assignments screen works with regards to firing on hostile targets. However, I have arrived at an engagement with two hostile ships and I'm a bit unclear as to why Aurora isn't letting me select them as targets. It would be fairly hard to describe the situation so I've taken a few screenshots. Suffice to say, the targets are well within range of search radar and FCS of the missiles. Additionally, they are well within range of the missiles themselves. However, they do not show up as viable targets. The only theory I have is that the targets are much smaller (1000 tons) then previous I have engaged and perhaps they need to be closer due to resolution? At this point they are at 100m km and I still cannot select them as targets. Screenshots:

Any info on why I am unable to target these ships would be appreciated!

Your ship has no active sensors. You won't see them as contacts until way way too late.

Sorry, my mistake in leaving out important details. In the same fleet I have the following ship as well:

This fleet is the combination I've used several times previously and been able to target and fire upon hostile contacts.

Are the sensors actually on? :)

As far as I can tell the active sensors are on for the sensor vessel. Here:

Also, take a look at this screenshot again:

In my experience, the sensor rings for active sensors don't appear until they are turned on. So I am pretty sure they are on based on those two things.
Incidentally, the hostiles fired missiles at my ships and I am able to target the missiles and fire AMMs at the hostile missiles immediately.
Edit: Also of interest, the enemy ships are now generating active sensor emissions and I can select them as destination when giving the TG orders but still cannot target them.
Edit 2: I have a theory. The FCS that these ships have, has the following stats:
Active Sensor Strength: 168 Sensitivity Modifier: 110%
Sensor Size: 8 HS Sensor HTK: 1
Resolution: 95 Maximum Range vs 4750 ton object (or larger): 540,360,000 km
Range vs 1000 ton object: 23,949,474 km
Range vs 250 ton object: 1,496,840 km
Chance of destruction by electronic damage: 50%
Cost: 252 Crew: 16
Materials Required: 0x Duranium 252x Uridium
I'm thinking the issue is that the targets are indeed 1000 tons and I'm about 40m KM away from them. It seems like I'll need to close to within 23.94m KM before I'll be able to use this FCS to get a lock on the target. Is that the case?

You need a Res 20 sensor to see the ships. So the AMS, MRS and LRS are going to be next to useless just based on their resolutions.
I do not recall if lower res sensors pick up higher res targets (the SRS). According to the descriptions in the sensor design, it should pick up the targets at its max range of 204.5m km. As to why it is not, I do not know.
Okay, I see the issue. Your fire controls are calibrated to res 95. The ships are a lot smaller than that, so your fire controls won't be able to lock on until they get a lot closer.

Perhaps the enemy uses ECM? I had a battle where I spotted the enemy with my thermals (I think) but couldn't fire on him. As he was moving closer I got a message from the intel people that he used ECM. He fired at me before I could fire a him, and just as in your case, I could take out his missiles, but not the platform they were fired from.

Another thing it can be(though isn't in the case since it is probably the fire control) Click the "show hostile contacts only" box. you might have them set to neutral, despite their red coloration on the display. If that is the case then go to the diplomacy screen and set this race to hostile.
His sensor is picking them up or they wouldn't be showing "1000 tons" on the display.

His sensors can see them, his fire control cannot.

The fire control issue was indeed the cause. I went back and upgraded the fire control and now the 1,000 ton enemy combatants are very, very dead. Thanks all!
