The Gregariously German Galactic Navy
« on: January 25, 2016, 09:59:21 AM »
So, I've been watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and I figured I'd cave into temptation and do a game based off the series. It's strictly a 'for funsies' run, so there's no real emphasis on being sensible, just being as cool as the show. (Thousands of ships at a time, tissue-thin armour, enough lasers to make a person overly-enamoured of lasers weep because there's too many and so on and all that palaver)

Still, it's going to be a change for me, this one. I'm having to learn to differentiate between classes by means other than 'this is a carrier, that one's a missile ship'. Those of you who've seen the Eurasian Union and TATO games I've done know that's my usual MO. But you see, I want to do this the LotGH way; good old pre-War style ship design principles. None of this newfangled 'missile' business. After all, warfare is civilised and chucking bits of metal is so peasant-like. (I'm kidding of course. It's chucking rocks that's peasant-like).

I imagine the Blucher-class to be the one ship you always see blowing up in the show. Nothing fancy, just a short-legged, short ranged destroyer designed to compliment the wall of battle.

Next, the Berlin. An extra engine, some of its 10cm lasers swapped for uprated 12cm lasers (that yes, are capped at the lower-range of the fire control they use) and about 2-and-a-half times the fuel capacity of the Blucher-class. Not quite a destroyer leader, since I have this idea that it operates in cruiser squadrons that the Blucher-class accompanies.

Ah, the Bismarck. I like this one. Wee bit tougher than the Berlin-class, and has the reach advantage. Full suite of heavier lasers, and is designed to be the protector of the Crownworld of Earth.

I actually designed this one while I was tinkering with the post. It's a pocket-battlecruiser, essentially. Built using the same guns as Blucher/Berlin-classes, with the armour of the Bismarck-class and able to outrun even a Blucher, thanks to the new larger engines it uses. Substitutes the longer range of the 12cm's for the punch of more 10cm's.

Couple of new ones I've been tinkering with today, a mix of military and commercial. I'm in the process of upgrading the previous designs as I tech up a bit more.

Honestly, I just came up with this one because it's something I've not done before. I'd like to imagine it as basically a pair of particle accelerators with a hull wrapped around them. It won't win any prizes for shooting down missiles, but who wouldn't want to kill a light cruiser with one of these bad boys?

Code: [Select]
Blade class Destroyer    2 650 tons     74 Crew     315.8 BP      TCS 53  TH 192  EM 0

Weiner-Menninger Fire Control S02 64-2000 (1)    Max Range: 128 000 km   TS: 2000 km/s     92 84 77 69 61 53 45 37 30 22

Gerber Engineering EM Detection Sensor EM1-6 (1)     Sensitivity 6     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  6m km

You'll note I said 'light cruiser'. That's because in my genius I researched a new laser wavelength, forgetting that on a 12cm gun it would give it superior range to even a particle accelerator. So, my new battleship can outrange it with lasers, and beat lesser opponents with its carronades like a Graf beating an errant serf. I envisage this being the real protector of Earth, so in other words the Admirals believe an opponent should come to them.
