Title: Poor Earth AAR
Post by: CharonJr on July 16, 2019, 03:23:11 PM
Hi,
the setting for this AAR is Earth in 1870 with the 8 major GDP nations as player nations and Germany the only power with TN tech researched. No ICBMs or shipyards. In addition I will edit resources on Earth to “fairly poor” and delete any minerals on Luna if there should be any. The AAR will be in a matter of fact style where I will try to explain at least some of my thought process for certain decisions. In addition I will try to replay this campaign once C# is out in order to get a better impression of the differences.

Setup
Top 8 (GDP) nations in 1870 (rounded numbers, hopefully not that far off from realistic numbers):
                                      Sector shares
Country           Pop (m)   GDP (m)   Agri  Indu  Serv    Divisions Factories
UK (incl. India)   285      235        35%   30%   35%    19          765
China              370      190        80%   10%   10%     5          190
US                  40      100        30%   35%   35%     5          350
Russia              90       85        80%   10%   10%    30           85
Germany             40       70        40%   35%   25%    40          210
France              40       70        35%   35%   30%    30          195
Italy               30       40        50%   20%   30%    22          100
Japan               35       25        55%   15%   30%     2           55
Rest of World      360      290                           10          435

Each division represents 10k soldiers (low tech INF for everybody, only TN is allowed to build low tech ARM)

Initial POP (in order to get more commanders) = POP(m) + number of research labs * 10 + number of divisions

"Real" POP = POP(m) - I will use SM to lower the numbers before starting the first turn

Conventional factories = GDP * (Industry% + Service%) *5

1 Military Academy and 1 Training Facility per nation

Research labs based on tech tier (very simplified)
4 = UK & Germany (& Rest of the World which will be passive except for war participation)
3 = US, France, Italy
2 = Japan, Russia, China

The basic idea is to give NPRs a fairly long time to expand and build up while there is still stuff happening on Earth. Due to this I will try to follow the steps described below.

Only Germany will get the TN tech at game start, but the other nations will try to research it once they learn about it from their spies (once a espionage team of 5 members is established it will generate an “automatic success” after 1 year in existence – even if they should get killed earlier).

The UK will be the first target for Germany due to its fairly high research (with 4 labs and 5k for TN tech it should take less than 5 years to complete the research). Essentially the same time it will take Germany to research Mobile Infantry.

After this war it will be about 50 German divisions (most likely still largely low tech INF with some low tech ARM and a couple of Mobile INF minus whatever is still needed to control 350m+ pops from the UK by this time) vs. 100 divisions (all low tech INF) from the rest of the world when the second war starts. And the longer Germany waits to build up the more nations will get to TN and research either GAR or improved combat values. In addition each other "major" has a Training Facility and Germany either just 1 or maybe 2 if the one in the UK did not get destroyed or resources are diverted to building a new one (2:6 ratio seems most likely).

Without the UK's industry the rest of the world has about 1.4k conventional factories with Germany having about 110-120 converted ones and 760 from the UK (at occupied production).

Essentially Germany has a 6-7 year headstart and especially due to the difference in starting divisions and TF I am not sure if Germany will win. My fall-back option is that the rest of the world stays united after defeating Germany and heads for the stars.

All of Earth has 27 labs at game start (minus whatever gets destroyed in the wars), so once Earth is unified research speed should actually be decent and pop numbers most likely around 1.5bn.

I would suggest editing Human tolerances so that their lower grav limit is 0.20 or higher, to limit the effect of the Earth-Luna economic superhighway.

I assume you are playing all the empires here as player races, and that therefore you plan to do the same in C# Aurora -- or will you give Steve's new multi-faction AI a chance?

Good idea and a good question. I think I will have to take a look at the AI first, because I am not sure if all would go into ("get TN fast and build up the military in the meantime" mode).

Will be interesting to see how this goes! Hopefully the game doesn't get ruined by NPR vs NPR war causing eternal 5sec increments.

Good idea and a good question. I think I will have to take a look at the AI first, because I am not sure if all would go into ("get TN fast and build up the military in the meantime" mode).

The VB6 Aurora AI doesn't handle 'conventional to TN' AT ALL, so a pre-TN NPR will stay pre-TN forever.

Steve said he planned to change this for C# Aurora, but not for the v1.0 release (realistically, not until v2.0 at least).

Those are the game details and 2 NPRs were generated at game start (will use this color as my SM-voice;) )

The NPR generating should prevent the NPRs spawning new NPRs and keeping the processing time manageable. The same for "No detection without player presence" which will hopefully avoid any NPR wars. In addition I just removed the "Use known Star Systems" since this should raise the chances to encounter habitable planets and this new NPRs (AFAIK). Activating "Invaders" might be a tad optimistic, but I will cross that bridge when I get there ;)

Background
In 1850 German geologists started to explore the geologic anomalies called the “Nördlinger Ries” (24km diameter) and the “Steinheimer Becken” (4km diameter) which were supposed to be meteorite impact craters. And while the much larger Nördlinger Ries was concluded to really have been caused by an meteorite, but the Steinheimer Becken showed subtle differences.

In 1862 – while searching for the original meteorite – instead of it a large metallic object surrounded by smaller metal objects was found. It was fairly obvious that this was no meteorite but a man-made object which has been largely destroyed, but much less than it should be considering the large crater it caused.
Under the highest secrecy the objects were brought to Berlin and further investigated. It became clear pretty fast that those metals had properties never observed before, but at the same time those metals occurred on Earth as well, but have simply not been extractable from other minerals. Till the end of 1869 ways have been identified to produce 11 new metals with astonishing properties. Using those metals Germany began to improve its industry and build a new type of military unit (armored self propelled cannons). The existence of those metals and the way to produce them was to be keep a secret.

1870
Germany starts to research Mobile Infantry Batallion with Timo Geiszler (20% Engergy Weapons specialist) in 4 labs. In addition a low tech armor division starts to be trained and 110 conventional factories are to be converted to Construction (using 60% of construction) and 100 converted to Mines (40% of construction).

The other nations are all starting to train 1 low tech infantry division. No industrial production at the moment and no fuel production will take place before TN tech is researched. Most likely I will manually add conventional factories for the other nations at the end of each year to simulate some economic growths. And all nations start to search for ways to expand their civilian economies.

In the beginning only the US is able to form a espionage team and sends it into Germany in order to investigate the rumors about the discovery of previously unknown minerals. Since this is way too low I start to add "initial Pop"/10 new officers to each european major power till most have a team - this will help with the fairly low number of ground force officers as well. After the first round of buffs the UK and Russia joined the spy-club, and after 3 additional round only Italy was left without a team.

Dang, it seems like having the player chance to generate a new NPR > 0 works right at the start as well, spawned a NPR right on Earth ;) Note: Set spawn chance to 0 at the start. Takes about 5 seconds processing time for 5 days at the moment, I hope this gets better once Earth is "unified" ;)

The US is the first to complete training its new infantry division in July 1870, has a fairly capable Planetary Governor, but will most likely lack the workers to expand the industry much further.

France follows 1 week later. Ground unit training bonus is a 5%.

The remaining nations follow by mid August (exept Germany with its armor).

The UK:

China:

Japan - this is really the best admin they have:

Italy:

Russia:

In Oktober the Russian Espionage team is captured in Germany, but they have learned enough to ensure that news about the TN materials will trickle back to Russia by the beginning of the new year.

And in November the first armored division completes training in Germany, at the same time a new administrator is installed (+25% shipbuilding, +10% factory production, +15% wealth, +10% population, +20% ground unit, +20% xeno, +10% logistics):

Yeah, even with the improvements to NPR AI code in C#, I would not run a multi-faction Earth start with NPRs as the other Earth powers. Maybe a multi-faction Sol start, where the NPRs are elsewhere in the system in an aftermath like in the test campaign Steve had.

This is definitely an interesting game setup CharonJr! Your choices regarding NPR spawn chances and detection are definitely the best and while I wouldn't turn Invaders on at the start, it's your funeral  ;D I've never had an NPR spawn on Earth like that, it shouldn't be possible AFAIK, so maybe something went bonkers in game creation. Hopefully it won't cause any issues in the long run, like ghost contacts etc.

Thx ;)

1871
News trickles in from the espionage teams of the non-Asian major powers about Germany’s research into TN metals and all governments assign all of their research capacity towards researching the new materials as well (except for Italy, who still have heard nothing about it).

All non-TN nations have expanded their industrial capacity during the last year, with the Japanese Empire having the largest growth (+5%) and the UK (due to its already fairly advanced home industry and no real industrialization in India the smallest (+1%) (in absolute numbers still the largest growth with +5 conventional factories – together with the US) .

Based on the change in mineral stockpiles a larger proportion of German production is allocated to mines (50% now from 40% before). Earth minerals were cut in half after starting to game to make expansion harder and slow down the game further.

1872
German intelligence indicates that one of the world’s greatest specialists in the fields of construction and production is working for the UK on researching TN metals. Based on evidence found at the Russian espionage team in October 1870 the Germans are fairly certain that TN metals are no longer a secret. Due to the capabilities of the Germany’s world leading scientist in sensors and fire control (which is supposed to the equal to the UK’s c/p specialist) it is calculated, that the UK might finish their research in about 3 years – making it October 1873. It might take an additional half year to find a military application for the research and less than half a year to deploy the first TN unit. Due to this the UK has to be attacked by summer 1874 at the latest. The other nations are not expected to complete their research in less than 4.5 years unless there are some unexpected breakthroughs.

By the end of May Germany completes research into Mobile Infantry Battalions and assigns newly appointed Heike Zenz (+20% logistics/ground combat) to research improved ground unit strength (12) which is expected to complete in early February 1873 (about 8 month) while the alternative research for Assault Troops would take 5 times as long. Once the current training of an additional ARM division is completed training of the new TN unit will start, based on a cadre of experienced low tech infantry.

By the middle of October the Japanese Empire has to halt its training of its new infantry unit due to material shortages and decides to stop expanding the military and focus on the industry instead.

Tensions are rising all around the world due to the continued military build-up of all nations in combination with the paranoia what the discovery of the new TN metals could mean of the future.

By the end of November the first TN combat unit – 48th Mobile Infantry Battalion – is completed by Germany and assigned to Generalmajor Emma Lindenbaum (+15% politics, +25% ground combat bonus), the longest serving officer of the German Heer.

1873
By early February Heiko Zenz completes research into new infantry weapons which improves German combat capabilities by 20%. He continues this line of research and expects to manage another improvement right around the time for the planed offensive against the UK in the summer of 1874.

By the end of November the UK becomes the second TN-power on Earth. Due to fairly heavy traffic between the university and No. 10 Downing Street in combination with the scientific estimates German spies are fairly certain about what has happened. Alfie Kirk (LG 10%) starts research into improved ground combat which is expected to complete by mid-October 1874. Another German Mobile Infantry Battalion will complete training at the end of May 1874. The attack will start immediately after new weapons become avaiable by the end of June 1874.

1874
By the middle of June the German units start to move towards their attack positions, with the 4 Mobile Infantry Battalions and 3 armor divisions assigned to key areas and the 35 infantry divisions following in their wake. The UK currently has 26 infantry divisions at home and abroad.

That's it for today... (this is one of the times where playing takes actually longer than writing about it)

By the end of May Heiko Zenz completes the next level of weapons and tactics research (Ground Unit Strength 14) and start to look into further improving it, expected completion by April 1877. GUS16 still is cheaper than Assault Units (4k vs. 5k) and will provide more benefits in the medium term. While German High Command is fairly confident that the war against the British Empire can be one it is much more doubtful about the next war which might have to be started as early as the end of 1876. The British Empire is despised by most nations on Earth due to their large colonial empire, but it seems very likely the once Germany attacks any other nation that the other nations will support it in order to contain German aggression.

At dawn of July, 1st 1874 Germany starts its attack. And it seems like the High Command might have been a bit optimistic, I have not played Aurora for some time and was surprised by the British defensive strength of 99, I expected something about 75 (26 x 3). It seems there is a defensive bonus I forgot about.

Both nations start to mobilize their reserves, which Germany having the advantage to to having been able to prepare. Germany sends 10 replacement battalions to the front while the UK is only able to send one. Both expect to be able to send 1 additional replacement battalion every 15 days. I SM’d the tech in since replacements should be common knowledge, even thought about HQs, but decided that those might involve TN tech and refrained. But the replacement battalions themselves will be SM’d as well, with a maximum number of initial ground force units – 42 for Germany, 26 for the UK. 1 mine and 2 conventional industries were destroyed in the initial fighting.

At July, 16th the first replacement battalion reaches the British lines.

On August, 16th French spies successfully acquired TN technology from Germany.
Julie Amyot (LG 15%) starts to look into Mobile Infantry Battalions whos power can currently be observed in the fighting between Germany and the British Empire. The overall battle is pretty much a stalemate, but Germany managed to destroy 1 enemy division during the fighting. On September, 16th the British manage to destroy the first German combat division in return. By the start of October it is getting harder for both nations to find volunteers and capable soldiers for the meat-grinder the fighting had become, reducing the rate of reinforcements to 1 battalion each month.

On October, 26th Alfie Kirk has completed research into new weapons and tactics for the British and continues his research into it.

On September, 26th the badly mauled (but fairly experienced) 22nd German Infantry Division is withdrawn from the frontlines and turned into the cadre of a new Mobile Infantry Battalion. And despite the improved British weapons and tactics the German offensive is gaining momentum (combat strength getting close to 2:1). At the same time German intelligence is starting to hear rumors about France having acquired TN tech and an investigation is ordered.

1875
By mid-January the German advantage is 3:1. Information gathered by German intelligence strongly indicates that Frances does posses knowledge of TN materials and it was acquired from Germany.

On February, 1st, with 5:1 odds against them and neither new troops, new technology nor allies on the horizon the British Empire capitulates and starts to be integrated into the German Kaiserreich. All remaining military units are dissolved and for the common people not much is expected to change. The capitulation of the British Empire to the German Kaiserreich is signed on February, 6th. Overall about 5 million people, more than 30 TN factories and mines were lost in the fighting in addition to more than 60 conventional factories.

All units and officers who participated in the fighting are awarded campaign ribbons and combat medals with a couple of leaders who distinguished themselves being awarded the Iron Cross for exceptional bravery or leadership in combat. Any idea how I can display the medals in the commander screen, or has this been removed for version 7.1?

In joined sessions between German High Command and leading scientists there are heated discussions what should be done about France. It is expected that they will need at least until the summer of next year before being able to complete any applicable research and field TN weapons, later for TN units. But even with just counting conventional units German would be outnumbered by 41 (3 of those ARM and 5 Mobile Infantry) vs. 147 low tech infantry divisions. Even with 2 Training Centers under control and better units, weapons and tactics those odds seem fairly bad. High Command assume that the other nations will be able to reinforce the defender (most likely France) with 10 divisions every 5 days with the first wave of reinforcements taking about 1 month to mobilize and arrive. Or maybe attack in the east and open up a second front. Mesons can not be used against ground units, correct?

That’s it for today…
Title: Re: Poor Earth AAR

Mesons can not be used against ground units, only PDCs and ships.

There's a specific Medal/Awards window that shows the graphical representation of them.

HQs can make a big difference in combat but only if there is a capable general leading it and the units attached to it have had time to train/prepare.
Title: Re: Poor Earth AAR
Post by: CharonJr on July 21, 2019, 03:09:46 PM
Thx, any idea how to display this window, I can not see it on the "commander screen" (F4)?

Based on their experiences from the war against the British Empire Germany was able to integrate already existing command and control systems with TN materials. This lead to improved means of communications and better logistics.I SM’d Brigade and Divisional Headquarters in for Germany and added enough HQs to cover the current 41 units. Gabriele Schenk (SF35%) takes over the weapons/tactics research (Ground Unit Strength 16) from Heiko Zenz (LG 30%) who starts to look into a new type of infantry unit which is focused on attacking (Assault Infantry). The delay in getting new weapons/tactics from mid-October 1876 to the beginning of November 1877 seems reasonable for getting additional offensive capabilities especially since neither High Command nor the scientists came up with any other solution for being able to fight a global war without severely damaging and polluting Earth itself in the progress. The availability of Assault Infantry is hard to calculate since the UK labs which will be used for it which are severely affected by the recent occupation, as is industrial output.
By mid-May the waves of unrest following the occupation of the British Empire start to quite down a little bit, the population only considers itself to be occupied now. Industrial and scientific output are doubled.

By mid-June the Kingdom of Italy has completed research into expanding the civilian economy and since the existence of TN materials is fairly common knowledge by now Adreanna Balbi (CP15%) starts to look into it. And by the end of October German intelligence captures a US espionage team.

1876
At the beginning of February the British population is further getting used to being a part of the German Kaiserreich, industrial output and research continues to rise, with the former British industry outproducing the industry in German heartlands.

During the summer the French General Staff heard reports about German High Command having had success in integrating TN materials into their command and control. The French started to look into ways to do the same and shortly before the end of the year they were successful. They estimate that they can provide 1 Brigade Headquarters to the army each month, starting in January 1877.

By the end of December the US becomes the next TN power, research is started into improved weapons and tactics (GUS 12) by Salvatore Casady (DS 30%).

1877
Right at the beginning of the new year France completes research into Mobile Infantry Battalion and Julie Amyot (LG 25%) starts looking into improved weapons and tactics (GUS 12). The first French Brigade HQ is established.

By mid-March there are no conventional industries left to convert in Germany, followed by conversion to mines in May, a second Ground Unit Training Facility is started which should be completed in March 1879.

On October, 6th German research into improved weapons and tactics has completed (GSU 16) and Jana Scheele (LG 20%) starts to look into ways to transfer knowledge of command and control from a army unit scale to a planetary scale. At the same time the former British population is even deeper integrated into the German society, they are now considered a candidate population and well on their way for full imperial citizenship. Due to increased moral among the British their productivity reaches new highs.

At the beginning of November Julie Amyot (LG 25%) competes the initial research into improved weapons and tactics (GSU 12) and starts with improving what was learned. This is a problem for the “support France with units from other nations” idea, either I will have to use a 6:5 ratio to keep with the original combat value of those units or have to use them to attack Germany as a relief force. And since there are currently 2 German colonies this might even work. German would have to split its forces between the attacking colony (former Britain) and defend the initial colony at home.

1878
At the beginning of April Salvatore Casady (DS 30%) completes research into improved weapons and tactics (GUS 12) and continues to improve upon it, and at the end of June German counter-intelligence caught a French espionage team.

The US tries to use TN materials in their brigade level HQs, but after some time realizes that they seem to have hit a dead end, most likely a first TN unit has to be researched before further insights can be gained.

1879
By the middle of March an additional Training Facility is completed in Germany. The industry in the German heartland starts expanding industrial capacity and mining.

High Commands current plan for the next war involves blockading the French harbors with the combined German/British fleets in order to prevent reinforcements for France by sea. It is expected that Italy and some minor nation will reinforce France while the bulk of the other nations will attack Germany from the east. The main focus will be France in order to win as quickly as possible and prevent any further build-up of French high-tech units – they are known to produce Mobile Infantry. Once France has been dealt with High Command is very confident that it can contain any attacks on German soil. War is expected to start once a brigade of Assault Infantry has been deployed and are ready to rush towards Paris.

In July Julie Amyot (LG 25%) completed the next stage of improved weapons and tactics and starts to work on further improving them since a German attacks seems to loom on the horizon. She hopes that she will be able to finish in time (expected November 1882). A few weeks later China completes their research into expanding the civilian economy and starts to look into TN materials with Xu Ni Gamg (EW 35%) leading the team.

In August Heiko Zenz (LG 35%) finished research into Assault Battalions, afterwards he takes over the research into Command and Control. After some heated debate whether additional offensive technologies should be researched it was decided that by the time they would be available the war is already either won or lost. Due to this Gabriele Schenk (SF 40%) starts working on geological sensors.

One week later Italy finishes its research into TN materials, immediately Montrelle Castelnuovo (LG 20%) starts to look into improved weapons and tactics for the Italian ground units (GSU 12).

1880
In January Russia joins the TN-club and starts to research improved weapons and tactics (GSU 12) with Antosha Sidorov (PP 45%) leading the team.

During new year German spies have been able to get partial data about the French OOB. German High Command is very relieved that the French officer corps seems to be way below German standards.

In contrast the German officer corps is benefiting hugely from their experiences in the British-German war.

That’s it for today…

Yes, but a bit later - and it will include something from Ceasar as well ;)

In March GeoSurvey Sensors are completed, research into Pressurised Water Reactors is started by August Roth (PP 10%).

At the beginning of July Italy completed improved weapons and tactics for their ground forces (GSU 12), Montrelle Castelnuovo (LG 25%) tries for additional improvements.

In August Japan completes research into ways to expand its civilian economy and Yoshioka Teijo (PP 30%) starts to look into TN materials.

At the end of October German completes research into Improved Command and Control and construction of a Sector Control is started. Hans-Joachim Neubauer (PP 10%) starts to look into lowering fuel consumption by 10%. In addition the US get their second improvement of the weapons and tactics (GSU 14). Salvatore Casady (DS 30%) starts to look into Mobile Infantry next since the US hopes that this will help with integrating TN materials into the C&C as well.

The die is cast!
On January, 19th Germany attacks France. While the majority of German units are TN based, most other powers still are mainly using conventional units, which are hindered much more by the winter weather. Especially reinforcements and replacements will be harder to get to the front. It is expected that it will take the French allies at least 10 days before the first troops arrive in the theater. And with the Kriegsmarine blockading the ports in Western Europe there will most likely be no reinforcements from overseas at all.

Likewise it is expected that a potential attack on Germany in the east will take at least 10 days to materialize. But High Command has positioned the III. Infantrie Division consisting of 3 light brigades (8 Mobile Infantry, 1 low tech INF) at the eastern border already. Those units will have priority for the new Mobile Infantry or Garrison units soon under construction. The attack in the east is expected to be lead by Russia (about 40 low tech INF), supported by China (about 20 low tech INF), the US (about 25 units, largely low tech INF but some ARM as well), 6 low tech INF from Japan and about 10 low tech INF from an assortment of minor nations. Different Ground Unit Strength levels are taken into account by adding a factor to the number of units (e.g. US gets 1.4 times its number of units due to having GSU 14). It is expected that if will take a couple of months before all units arrive in the theater.

In the west the I. and II. Infantrie Divisionen will launch the attack on France. I. consists of 4 full brigades of Mobile Infantry (16) under the leadership of the best German officers while II. consists of 4 full brigades as well, but with a mix of units (7 Assault Infantry (3 more under construction), 2 Mobile Infantry, 3 low tech ARM and 4 low tech INF). France is expected to field 10-11 brigades of mainly low tech INF with some Mobile Infantry and low tech ARM between them. Italy is expected to reinforce the French, their army is thought to consist of about 35 units, mainly low tech INF. It is expected that all Italian troops will be in place in 1-2 months.

Initially the German forces have a close to 2:1 advantage, but this is not expected to last. All nations on Earth declare war on the German Kaiserreich following its renewed aggression. After 10 days of fighting France gets its first replacements and Germany moves 5 replacement battalions to the front in the west while the remaining 5 are deployed in the east. In addition the first 5 Italian fast reaction forces arrive in France (4 INF, 1 ARM). At the same time 5 low tech INF from minor nations and 1 from Japan arrive in Russia just in time for the Russian offensive. But the Russian offensive in the east grinds to a stop as soon as it has begun, it is estimated that they are outguned by the German defenders at a ratio of roughly 3:1. The attack is stopped for now and will only resume once all allied forces are in Russia. In France the situation is slightly improved, but the German attackers still enjoy a substancial advantage.

Italy manages to move 10 INF to front while in the east the first 5 US units (ARM) arrive, together with the remaining 5 Japanese units and 5 from China (all INF). The French frontline is stabilized further, but Germany still holds an advantage while in the east there is a miscommunication and the Russian attack only comes to a hold 5 days after the initial orders to stop the attack were issued. Forgot to stop the attack, but this might be a good representation of the untested Russian officer corps ;) They will get a couple of additional replacement units

Two weeks later additional reinforcements and some replacement battalions arrive on all fronts. Another 10 Italian INF bolster the French defense while the US is able to establish a steady stream of 5 INF each 10 days to Russia, in addition 5 Chinese INF and remaining INF of the minor nations arrive on the eastern front. But the Italian support has barely any noticable effect. Even German High Command is suprised by the large advantage their troops enjoy due to better equipment, morale, C&C and better leadership due to experience.

By the middle of March Italy manages to bring its last units into France 9 INF into France into addition to 1 Italian and 1 French reinforcement battalion. Overall Italy has moved 33 INF and 2 ARM units to France, but it seems unlikely that they will be enough to hold the line without additional help. Pleads for help are send to the other allies, but without breaking the German blockade additional reinforcements would have to be moved by land, which would take a lot of time. The Russians still want to try another assault once the coalition forces are assembled, if this attack fails they will try to move the coalition forces into France by land. In the east 7 Chinese INF and all but 4 US INF have arrived on the battlefield, together with 3 replacement battalions. In another 2 weeks all military units of the world will face each other along 2 separate frontlines. 1 French Research Lab is destroyed in the fighting, a very heavy blow considering that there are only 2 of those left now.

By April, 4th the final coalition forces have arrived in Russia (4 US INF and 6 Chinese INF) together with 3 replacement battalions. The overall number of coalition units on the eastern front is 100, with most of them INF. They start to attack.

Facing them are 9 German veteran units lead by experienced officers.

When Generalmajor Emma Lindenbaum realized that this human wave would be unable to threaten her positions she orders her troops to make themselves appear weaker than they really are and refrain from counter attacks. She wants the coalition forces to bleed themselves dry on her positions for as long as possible. She estimates that for every percentage point of lost combat power her units manage to inflict twice that number to the enemy.

In the west the situation looks even bleaker for the allies, here they bleed combat capability at a roughly 3:1 ratio. Without reinforcements from the east the war in the west will be lost, but when the eastern front were to be deprived of too many units the Germans might be strong enough to successfully attack Russia.

Again pleas are send to Russia to stop the attacks and keep enough units at the front to stop a German attack, but send everything else to the west as soon as possible. It takes another 5 days before the message arrives and Russia is able to stop its attacks. Russia will keep it own units at the eastern front and the remaining coalition forces start to move towards France. When the Germans realize what is happening they send one of their Mobile Infantry brigades together with 4 of the 5 replacement battalions to the western front. And since they are able to use the German railway for the transport they will arrive nearly 1 month before the bulk of the coalition forces from the eastern front will reach France.

That's it for today...

With the bulk of the forces gone from the eastern front German High Command is confident that the remaining Russian forces can be stopped by a single German Mobile Infantry Brigade (the 10. Brigade), the other forces (and their HQs) together with all 5 replacement battalions are moved to the west by train. When the additional German troops arrive at the western front Germany has a 2:1 advantage in combat strength for the first time since the war started.

After another 20 days the first coalition units arrive, 4 US ARM and 5 US INF (initially 5 and 7, but they were reduced by 1.4 due to the higher GSU of France). 5 days after them 30 coalition INF arrive, a mixture of the remaining US and all Chinese units. The final coalition forces – 5 Japanese INF and 6 INF from minor nations – arrive during the next 5 days together with 3 replacement battalions. Germany receives 1 additional replacement battalion. The number of coalition forces declined while moving to France since the experience in the east has shown that the combat capabilities of those lower tech units are not high enough to be useful in engagements vs. the Germans, due to this some units were dissolved and integrated with other units into larger units in order to somewhat compensate for this weakness.

During the German attacks on June, 1st 1881 it becomes obvious that the coalition will not be able to stop the German onslaught. Despite using all available forces in the west they are losing ground. On June, 21st training of another US ARM unit is completed and it is shipped to Europe, but since the blockade is still in effect it will have to be unloaded Istanbul and will take about 1 month to arrive at the front. And despite France and its allies being able to put 3 replacement battalions at the frontline every 15 days in contrast to 1 for Germany the coalition casualties are more than six times as high than for the German side.

By July, 1st Germany enjoys a 3:1 advantage in combat power and the final German assault is started. The 8. Brigade (consisting of 2 Assault and 2 Mobile Infantry) lead by Brigadegeneral Karsten Schulenburg (Ground Combat Bonus 39%, Training 50) uses an all-out attack by the other units of II. Infantrie Division to punch through the coalition lines. His orders are to reach Paris as soon as possible to use this powerful symbol as a means to force (or offer) France (a means) to capitulate.

When news of this breakthrough reaches the coalition High Command everybody implores General Martine Girard, the overall commander of the French army, to deploy the reserves in order to stop the Germans, but General Girard has to reply that there are none. On July, 7th at 10 p.m. 8. Brigade reaches Paris. On the morning of July, 8th a ceasefire is declared and on July 12th France and Russia sign their capitulations with the remaining nations signing on July 17th.

In the end less than 70 coalition units were still operational, many of them badly mauled – out of an initial 140 (already taking into account the lower number of units due to making up for the superior quality of the French troops), with Germany not having lost a single unit.

Despite the fairly quick campaign (just 5 month in total) France suffered 5 million casualties and lost 70% of its industry (including 1 research lab). Germany and Russia did not suffer any serious damages and the other nations are unscathed.

The time has come to heal the wounds torn by two wars, but if the quick and smooth integration of Britain into the German Kaiserreich is any indication, there will be good times ahead for a united Earth. Unless it ends before it really begins…
(https://s18.directupload.net/images/190723/ebt9o85x.jpg)

I was very surprised by the large advantage to be had from good officers in combination with Divisional and Brigade HQs. France had Brigades as well, but due to their much poor officers they hardly had any impact. This lead to a victory that was way faster than expected. But the main goal of this overture was to give the 2 NPRs time to grow naturally. And with the needed integration of the conquered nations, industrial build-up, looming resource shortages and only geo-sensors research at the moment there will still be a lot of time for them to expand further.

That’s it for today…

It's pretty rare to get to see a conventional ground war on Earth, especially without any space element to it. It's a shame that it is impossible to model the naval war in Aurora and that there isn't a SM-mode for Rule the Waves. I know someone used Hearts of Iron to model the pre-TN discovery history of Earth - their divergence point was in WW2 if I remember correctly - and then followed that up with a conventional start Earth but with 6 powers.

EDIT: it was Kurt and his 6 Powers Campaign: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=1213.0 (http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=1213.0) It's a great read!

And yeah, the HQs, combined with good officers, can make a big difference, but much of the discrepancy is caused by the crazy power gap between low tech INF/ARM and even the basic TN units.  C# actually fixes this to a degree, since ground units and formations become so much more flexible, the combat model slightly more complex and Steve introduced intermediary armour levels before Duranium armour.

I'll definitely keep following this AAR, to see how you fare, plus it's nice to get to read daily updates!

Thx ;)

A question here, isn't the conquerer supposed to the the minerals of the conquered?

Because with just 500 mines converted from conventional industry in total there should be a larger Corundium stockpile (27k in 1871). It looks like just Germany's stockpile is shown.

edit. Ah, never mind, each "nation" still has its own stockpile. Dang, been too long since I played last ;)

It looks like just Germany's stockpile is shown.

That's because "Germany" is a separate colony from "France".  France's conquered minerals are sitting right where France left them.  Only wealth is electronically portable -- everything else has to be moved.

Thx, was a tad too slow with my edit ;)

Since my ISP seems to have some problems today, there will be no pictures.

Germany starts to build a civilian shipyard. Since Earth is about to run out of important minerals it is essential to look for them elsewhere in the Sol-System. Geo-Sensors have already been researched, and in theory Germany should be able to build a spaceship since it must have been a spaceship that crashed on Earth a long time ago. The main question is how to build it and where to build it. The where is a field close to Berlin in Germany and the shipyard will include all current theories about the how. The construction is expected to be completed in late 1883.

Due to the non-integrated nature of the “colonies” a fairly large number of smaller research projects are started – Terraforming Modules, improved Terraforming Rate, Turret Tracking Speed, Large Fuel Storage, Duranium Armor, EM Sensor Sensitivity 6 and a Cargo Handling System. Once the colonies become fully integrated (imperial population) the industry and labs will be centralized.

In order to help with the mineral problem weapons and armor of the dissolved units from both wars are recycled, providing about 50% of the metals initially used for it (600 Duranium, 1800 Neutronium). But new industrial production will still have to be limited to essential projects.

In September research into lowered fuel consumption for spaceships is completed and scientists start with a first draft of a vessel capable to leave Earth and look for minerals on other planets. Hans-Joachim Neubauer (PP 10%) starts to look into making ship engines more powerful (Max Power x1.25). One weak later August Roth (PP 10%) finishes research into a new means of power generation, the Pressurised Water Reactor and starts to look into a application for it (Nuclear Engine Theory). Britain starts to build a naval shipyard for the planed vessel, completion is expected in July 1882.

But even with minimal features the new ship is way larger than expected and does not look like a really viable design. It weights nearly half as much as one of the last navy ships build by Prussia before the TN materials were discovered – SMS Medusa of the Nymphe-Class. On the other hand it is fairly cheap to build and there might be lessons to be learned from a prototype.

In October the populations of former Russia and France become more accepting of the German rule and consider themselves occupied instead of conquered. The other former nations follow suit shortly afterwards. Britain is fully integrated into the German Kaiserreich (imperial population), but the transfer of labs and construction facilities will have to wait until the current projects are finished. All remaining conventional units are being transformed into Garrison Battalions.

In November Sector Command is completed and Veronica Oliver (Mining 30%, Pop Growth 20%) will improve the efficiency of the government. And since it uses less resources (but more time) to first convert conventional industries into mines and then convert mines into automated mines instead of building them directly, industrial efforts in the colonies are split 50/50 between converting into industries and mines. A decent reserve of Corundium will have to be kept since it takes 75 Duranium and Corundium each to convert a mine into an automated one.

1882
In order to find possible mineral sites in the Sol-System astronomers have begun to enhance their telescopes with TN materials. In addition to visible light the telescopes are now able to receive and interpret wavelengths of higher and lower frequencies as well. While trying to calibrate their new device strange emissions from Luna show up on the display. First this is thought to be an error in the new equipment. But no errors were found, the only conclusion being left is that there is someone or something on the Moon, which is generating those emissions. Most likely a listening post from the NPR that was generated on Earth at the beginning.

Imagine picture of Luna with red Thermal 55 and EM 55 here, will try to edit it in tomorrow.

By July the populations of Russia and France have improved their status to subjugated. Followed by the other nations at the end of July. On July, 11th the first naval shipyard – Zeppelin Werke - on Earth is completed in Britain. And after the project control has been transferred to Germany the Geo-Survey prototyp Humboldt (former Blücher, but since it is a science vessel and the name Blücher might have a sting to it for the French, the name was changed) is put on keel. Especially since finding those signals from Luna gives heading there a very high priority. To support the ship the construction of a maintenance facility is started. And before being able to build the Humboldt the capacity of Zeppelin Werke’s single slipway has to be expanded from 1kt to 1.5kt which should be completed in December.

In August Hans-Joachim Neubauer (PP 10%) completed research into Maximum Engine Power Modifier x1.25 and does some calculations if this might have any meaningful impact on the Blücher. He finds that an “improved” engine would have the same speed, but due to higher fuel consumption and additonal crew needed for it would actually be worse – for now the design will be unchanged and he starts to look into the other end of the spectrum, at a x0.4 engine modifier.

On September 16th, the last Corundium on Earth has been mined, for now the combined stockpiles of 25k is all that is left before new sources have to have been found, mines delivered and the minerals started to be exploited.

At December, 1st the first commercial shipyard – Meyer Werft – is completed and due to the experiences with the Zeppelin Werke an immediate expansion by 10kt is ordered. Part of the freed up capacity is used to build a fighter factory, a interesting new concept based on small spaceship with a very limited durability and piloted by a very small crew. At the moment the factory will be kept small, being limited to producing just a couple of small experimental prototypes. With better engines those craft might be durable enough to explore some of the planets and asteroids close to Earth. The remaining capacity is split between a second naval yard and an additional research lab.

1883
In March Heiko Zenz (LG 35%) completed research into Cargo Handling System and starts to look into means to lower the size of the Engineering Section of ships, another part that may be of use to the new fighter concept. The expansion of Zeppelin Werke by 500t (to 2kt) is completed by the end of April and another 500t is  ordered. In May Jana Scheele (LG 25%= completes research into Fuel Storage – Large and follows up with Cryogenic Transport.

On June, 13th the first spaceship ever build on Earth, the SMS Humboldt is completed and revealed to the public. A couple of viewers who were familiar with the design of submarines where reminded of them by Humboldt’s look.  Kapitän zur See Ruth Rohde was choosen as the captain, mainly due to her survey (25%) background and courageous nature. Part of the crew will be made up by additional survey specialists who are supposed to propect Luna for minerals that might escape the geo-sensor. In addition they are tasked to look at the strange signal being emitted from Luna. Since there is no fluctuation from the signal at all it seems unlikely that aliens are the cause of it. The survey team will be equipped with TN based Raumanzüge which should protect them from the vacuum of space which has been discovered by scientics programs using simple rockets. Elisabeth Huber will lead this team. In addition Duranium Armor has been researched by Adele Laurentius and (DS 10%) and she starts to look into a higher density version. Using the new Duranium Armor the Humboldt Mk2 is designed, at 1.1kt it is weighing 150t less than the original Humboldt.

Humboldt’s journey to Luna takes 1:20h and after close to 4 days in orbit no minerals were found - actually there were 160kt Corbomite (0.9), 349kt Vendarite (0.6), 754kt Sorium (0.2) and 2499kt Gallicite (0.9), but as mentioned at the start, minerals on Luna will be deleted – but the Geo-Survey team starts to look for minerals anyway while Humboldt continues it exploration of the Sol-System. A small base has been constructed which will house the Geo-Team. SMS Humboldt will head to survey Mercury next.

In early July Hans-Joachim Neubauer (PP 10%) completes Minimum Engine Power x0.4 and starts to look into a improved power source (Pebble Bed Reactor Tech). After spending more than 1 month chasing Mercury Humbold finally enters orbit, but after a couple of days it become clear that they are not able to detect any minerals. The next target is Venus. By the middle of August Humboldt reaches Venus and completes the survey on the 18th, 20mt of Duranium and 13mt of Boronide were found, but at minimal accessibility (0.1), in addition 29mt of Uridium with good accessibility (0.8 ) were found. This marks the first mineral deposits outside of Earth, but sadly those minerals are very hard to mine or not really in any danger of running out soon. Since the comet Comas Sola is moving close to Venus it is the next target. And 37kt of Tritanium (0.6 ) are found. Next up is the survey of Mars and Zeppelin-Werke gets another expansion by 500t.

In September another addition of 10kt to the Meyer-Werft is ordered (20kt at the moment). When SMS Humboldt enters the orbit around Mars on October, 3rd it detects a signal very similar tho the one from Luna.

In October August Roth (PP 15%) completes his research into Nuclear Thermal Engine and begins to design an improved engine. In addition the remaining labs and population of former Britain is completely integrated into Germany (except for 1 naval academy). With the new engine technology the envisioned fighter becomes reality and the naval shipyard will be freed up for other tasks. August Roth takes over the Pebble Bed Reactor research (with 7 labs now) and Stefanie Trattner (MK 20%) is assigned 1 lab to look into 10cm Railgun.

After the latest batch of officers and administrators have graduated from the naval academies all over the world the final remaining installation in Britain – the naval academy – is integrated into Germany as well, thus completing the integration of Britain.

In November Brauchitsch Transport Corporation launches 2 freigthers, 1 large freighter at 34.1kt with 25kt capacity and 1 huge freighter at 67.6kt with 50kt capacity. The authorities are at a loss what they actually want to transport, but it is suspected that they want to be prepared for when Germany starts to send automated mines to important mineral sites and infrastructure to potential colonies. And while both plans have not been communicated to the public plans are prepared for this. But it seems that they do not know that it is planed to test a new idea for the transportation of the minerals itself. There is a theory that batches of minerals can be shot from giant magnetic cannons and be received by a similar device at the destination. Early tests have been very promising amd a first “Mass Driver” is already under construction (but at a fairly low priority at the moment).

In early December a second civilian shipping line is established, Bartsch Shipping Lines. Later in December the Elisabeth Huber Geo-Team on Luna complete their investigation, but come up empty handed. Neither did they find any minerals nor have they been able to force entry into the installation they did find and which seems to be the source of the signals detected on Earth. They head back to Earth with a small shuttle that has been send for them. And in another shuttle they are heading off to their next destination, the comet Comas Sola (personally I dislike the micro involved in moving the geo-teams by actual shuttle, due to this I simply “beam” them to their new destinations – disbanding them and re-creating them). It looks like military forces will be needed to open the alien installation, but currently Earth lacks the means to move troops to Luna.

At the end of December Zeppelin Werke finished its expansion to 3kt and the slightly smaller and faster Humboldt Mk2 (which is still way inferior to the new Humboldt shuttle). Due to this no new ships are ordered for now, but the capacity expansion contines. Kapitän zur See (R3) Detlef Zweig (Survey 20%) is assigned to the Humboldt Mk2 which shows another advantage of the new Humboldt shuttles. They do not need a Fregattenkapitän (R2) to command them, a Korvettenkapitän (R1) is enough and thus officers more qualified for survey will be able to do the planetary surveys. Zweig is order to look for minerals on the closest system bodies.

1884
Competition among civilian shipping lines will be really intense with two new competitors, Rosenfelder and Lindenbaum. And in March the remaining colonies on Earth improve their status to candidate populations. In April Timo Geizler completes Turret Tracking Speed 2kkm/s and Bastian Redlich (PP 20%) start to look into Capacitor Recharge Rate 2. And 474k Duraium at 1.0 accessability is discovered on Ceres. This is a very nice find, but Corundium is still more of a problem.

Temple-1 – surveyed at the end of May – looks decent, but still no Corundium: Neutronium 42kt @0.6, Corbomite 40kt @0.6, Tritanium 52kt @0.5, Mercassium 117kt @0.8 and Gallicite 10kt @0.9. A new research lab was constructed and another one ordered and Meyer Werft expanded its capacity by 10kt and another 10kt are ordered.

In August research into Cryo Transport is completed by Jana Scheele (LG 35%) and she start to look into Troop Transport Bays. In theory Earth would be able to colonize other planets and moons, but currently still lack the infrastructure to support large colonies. But production of infrastructure will get a higher priority and a first test base will be established on Luna with the available infrastructure (40 units). Civilian shipping is ordered to take care of the transport.

In September Wilhelm von Knapp (BG 40%) completes looking into Terraforming Rate 0.12 and tries to further improve it. Later this month the first Humboldt-Shuttle is completed and tasked with surveys of the more distant planets and moons due to its higher speed and longer range. With knowledge about a smaller engineering section just about 4 month away there is no order for an additional shuttle for now. A civilian mining colony was established on Faye with 3 mining complexes – Duranium 37kt @1, Corbomite 22kt @0.8, Trianium 30kt @0.5 and Mercassium 18kt @0.9 – none of this minerals are desperately needed at the moment, but are still useful. In addition the treasury holds more than 150k credits, with a surplus of about +580, so the decision to buy those minerals is easily made.

After finishing EM Sensory Sensitivity 6 in October Gabriele Schenk (SF 50%) starts to look into Beam Fire Control Range 10kkm. Towards the end of December August Roth (PP 15%) completes his research into the new Pebble Bed Reactor and continues with Nuclear Pulse Engine Technology.

1885
Heiko Zenz (LG 45%) finishes his Engineering Section – Small project and tries to reduce the size even further. The reason for this becomes clear when the new section is fitted into an improved Humboldt shuttle. It is still way too large for a fighter chassis. But since it is still an improvement one new Mk2 is ordered.

February sees the launch of the first luxury spaceliner by Rosenfelder Marine, enabling the more affluent people to take a pleasure cruise into space. An environment previously reserved for scientists and the military. With the second mass driver completed on Earth civilian transports get a contract to move a mass driver to Faye. Soon it will be known whether mass drivers work over planetary distances as well. In March Elisabeth Huber’s Geo-Survey team finishes their work on Mercury without finding anything, they are shuttled to Faye where the mass driver is starting to send minerals back to Earth. And the mass driver is working as expected with the driver on Earth neatly catching the packets send by the driver on Faye. This should safe fuel and transport capacity, even though at the moment both of those are there in abundance. The geo-team fails to find any new deposits.

In June Stephanie Trattner (MK 20%) finished research into Railgun 10cm and continues to look into larger calibers. And it is starting to get really crowded around Earth, despite still not much to do for the civilians (well, except moving stuff from Earth to Earth ;) ).

Yeah, you get an an early civilian commerce boost from the fact of having multiple colonies on Earth. Usually it takes until a Moon/Mars colony for that to happen.

I see you shipped a mass driver to Faye to get the minerals to Earth. In case you didn't know civilian mining colonies have an implicit mass driver that can be used when you have selected purchase minerals. This means that the mass driver you shipped to Faye is wasted, unless there was more than two trips worth of minerals stockpiled on Faye.

Ah, great, thx for the heads up, another thing I have forgotten. I had wondered why there were 2 packets at first, but this explains it nicely :)

Civilian mining complex's mass drivers will only send the production of the CMCs.  If you have automines as well, the minerals from them will build up.

Also CMCs spawn with a Deep Space Sensor and a garrison troop, if you have that tech, and a low tech armor division if you don't.  Low tech armor divisions can be turned into cadre to help build marine divisions faster.

Yes, thx, but at the moment the plan is to use the asteroids/comets either exclusivly for civilian OR government mining. I used cadres extensively during the initial phases of this AAR ;)

In August a decent source for Corundium has been found on the comet Wolf – Corundium 83kt @0.8, Mercassium 21kt @0.5, Tritanium 16kt @0.5, Vendarite 16kt @ 0.9, Corbomite 11kt @1.0. For the moment there will be no colony established on Wofl, hoping that a civilian mining company might begin to exploit the minerals which would be bought from them. Later in August the Humboldt Shuttle Mk2 is completed and starts its exploration. Due to their low speed and bad fuel efficiency the original Humboldt’s will remain at Earth when they return there once their current fuel runs out.

In October Gabriele Schenk (SF 55%) finishes Beam Fire Control Range 10kkm and she looks into Active Grav Sensor 10 next. And in December the supply of Mercassium on Earth has been exhausted. The current stockpiles are at about 40kt and the best current alternative source is Temple-1 at 117kt @0.8. But for now there is no immediate need to do anything about it. A few days later the second naval shipyard is completed, Braun Systems. For now nothing will be build there, but its capacity will be extended. The program to convert mines into automated mines is expanded.

1886
In April a civilian mining company is established on Encke with 3 complexes – Corbomite 35kt @0.6, Sorium 97kt @0.9, Mercassium 37kt @0.6, Vendarite 24kt @1.0 and Bornide 19kt @1.0, the minerals are bought for now since the current surplus is still at +520 credits and the treasury at 216k.

In Mai Jana Scheele (LG 35%) completes research into Troop Transport Bay and she starts to look into Boat Bay. The concept to carry smaller sized and highly specialized boats inside a large mothership to their destination and launch them there seems very intriguing. With the completion of the Troop Transport Bay Earth should finally have the means to break into the alien installations on Luna and Mars.  The Kranich troop transport is designed and a new commercial shipyard will be build to construct it since Meyer Werft is currently expanded to 70kt.

With 200 infrastructure stored on Earth these are transported to Mars, this should enable a small human colony there, the first human colony outside of Earth itself and the first real step to the stars for Humanity. Construction of infrastructure is stepped up and a Mass Driver is send to Mars to provide minerals as needed and a tracking station to look for any other alien outposts. The first colonists arrived an Mars at July, 17th 1886. Harald Alt (Wealth +25%, Mining +5%, Terra +10%) becomes the first governor of Mars.

In September another civilian mining colony is established, this time on Machholz, but with just 1 mining complex (raised to 3 over the next couple of months) – Corbomite 41kt @ 1.0, Sorium 20kt @ 0.8 and Corundium 28kt @0.8. Due to the Corundium this mining output will be bought by the government as well. With Active Grav Sensors 10 completed Gabriele Schenk (SF 55%) start to look into Thermal Sensor Sensitivity 6.

In November August Roth (PP 15%) completes Nuclear Pulse Engine Tech and starts to look into civilian and military applications for the new technology. NPEs should open up the next level of speed for Earth’s navy. In December the military engine design is completed. I will "instant" every design below 100RP and research anything above 100. The new Humboldt Shuttle Mk3 raises its speed from 500km/s to 800km/s and the Kranich Troop Transport design ends up with twice the speed – from 591km/s to 1183km/s.

August Roth starts to look into lower fuel consumption next (0.8 liters). And it looks like only the rich and famous are moving to Mars. Despite 2 regular colony ships in Earth’s orbit everybody who resettles to Mars uses a luxury liner… ;)

That’s it for today…

Edit: The trigger for the luxury liners is having the capital colony on Earth set to stable, once it is a source of colonists the other ships join in moving colonists.

1887
Completed techs: Boat Bay, Terraforming Rate 0.0015atm, Capacitor Recharge 2, Fuel Consumption 0.8, Engineering Section- Tiny
New techs being researched: Construction Brigade, Terraforming Rate 0.002atm (1 lab), Jump Point Theory, Gas Cooled Fast Reactor Tech, Mining Production 12, Construction Rate 12, Fighter Production 12, Research Rate 240, Ship to Ship tractor beam

Construction Brigades are being put up for research since they are very helpful for building up a new colony. In addition they are useful if/when alien ruins are discovered. And I should have started to research Mining Production much earlier, but since I still lack a CP specialist I was still hoping for one, started now without any specialist. Same for Construction Rate 12. Fighter Production 12 and Research Rate 240 are only researched as training for the two 0% CP specialists I do have available.

In April the Neutronium and Boronide supplies on Earth have been exhausted. But for the moment there are still decent stockpiles of around 20kt of Neutronium (not that decent actually) and 34kt Boronide. A new civilian mining colony has been established on Neujmin using 2 complexes – Neutronium 20kt @0.7, Sorium 29kt @1.0, Corundium 17kt @0.6 – with a surplus of still 500cr and 251kcr all civilian mining production will be bought for now. Later in April the new commercial shipyard is completed – Otto Systems. 1 Kranich Troop Transport is ordered (should complete in February 1888) and the shipyard will be extended to 20kt.

In July the next mineral supply has been exhausted on Earth, Gallicite, remaining stockpile is at around 47kt. With Corundium levels dropping below 15kt something has to be done. This picture does look bleaker than reality since there are still 7 other colonies on Earth with their own (but much smaller) mineral stockpiles.

With the civilian mining companies refusing to work on Wolf a colony is established there and all 22 automated mines and 1 mass driver are send to Wolf, additional mine conversions are needed and ordered. And still in July all remaining colonies on Earth reach imperial population status. Over the next years Earth will complete its unification (last research finishes in 1890).

1888

Completed techs: Thermal Sensors 6, High Density Duranium Armor
New techs being researched: Fire Control Speed Rating 2000km/s, EM Sensor Sensitivity 8, Composite Armor

In mid-January Earth’s first troop transport SMS Kranich is completed. She loads 2 Assault Battalions and the Christian Kellermann Xeno team (only roleplay reasons for the team) and heads towards the alien installation on Luna. The resistance is heavier than expected, even if it just seems to consist of automated defenses. The two Assault Battalions are only slightly more powerful than the defenses. In order to lower the risk another 2 Assault Battalions are brought from Earth. Due to this and another same sized alien installation on Mars a second Kranich class is ordered.

By the end of March the first (of 2) aliens units on Luna is destroyed. 10 days later the second unit is destroyed as well. No living aliens were encountered, just automated defenses and “robots” as one of the troops with Russian origins had started to call them and the name stuck. Except for some infrastructure nothing was found in the alien installation, making its purpose a mystery. All four commanders involved in the fight are awarded the Xeno Combat Medal.

At the end of February Earth Academy finally produces a decent construction/production specialist, Karl-Ludwig Hettinger (CP 10%) who takes over the Mining Production project, sadly his inexperience prevents him from overseeing more than 5 labs. 1. and 2. Mobile Infantrie Brigaden are send to Mars to provide protection and breach the alien installation there. And another 17 automated mines are send to Wolf, for a total of 39, still not enough.

At the beginning of June the assault by 2 mobile brigades on the alien installation on Mars is launched. After one month the assault is completed successfully. As expected it turned out that the installation was nearly identical to the one on Luna, including 2 robotic defense units. And again only infrastructure was found. After a thorough examination of both installations it was deemed that nothing new could be learned here and both sites are sealed.

In early December TF Survey 1 (a Humboldt Shuttle) runs out of fuel due to having failed to account for Earth’s movements in the calculations for heading back to refuel. But the fairly close proximity to Earth will allow the troop transport SMS Kranich to provide enough fuel to enable the return to Earth.

BTW, any idea how I can get rid of those annoying messages? Most of these empires are integrated into Germany by now and they have no colony left (used “abandon” to get rid of them).

Completed techs: Terraforming Module, Construction Rate 10, Reduced-size Launcher 0.75 Size / 2x Reload, Mining Production 12
New techs being researched: Asteroid Mining Module, Railgun Launch Velocity 1

By the end of February Humboldt Shuttle 001 suffered a maintenance failure, despite still having some supplies left if shows that wear and tear will take it toll after having been in constant use for close to 4.5 years. Since it is starting to be fairly slow and inefficient by current standards it will be scrapped when it heads back to Earth to refuel the next time. A modern replacement is already under construction – 800km/s speed and 28.3 billion km range vs. 500km/s with a range of 12.1 billion km.

By the end of the year the most highly decorated ground commander, Generalleutnant Katharina von Helms was retired due to a severe medical problem. She participated in all the battles of Earth’s unification and was leading I. Infantrie Division before being forced into retirement. Generalmajor Gunnar Pelz, also a veteran of all the early battles is taking over as commander of I. Infantrie Division.

With the completion of research into Construction Brigades the last impediment for the total integration of the former nations of Earth into the Kaiserreich has vanished. Humanity truly stands united and is ready to take their next step on the voyage to towards its destiny.

Research
(https://s1.imagebanana.com/file/190731/jBkE6uYr.jpg)

Concerning research only 1 scientist with a positive CP-rate is a fairly heavy burden. Karl-Ludwig Hettinger has just a 10% bonus, but at least he is able to coordinate 20 labs now. The other research areas are covered pretty well, except for DS with is at just 10% as well: BG 45%, EW 30%, LG 60% and 40%, MK 30%, PP25% and SF at 55% and 50%.

The biggest overall concern is the lack of any really good sources for minerals. Between the civilian mines and about 110 automines the situation is fairly stable, but at the moment there is essentially no shipbuilding or expansion of shipyard capacities going on. And this will not really change till larger deposits are found and exploited. Jump Point Theory will get a higher priority soon.

8 construction battalions and 2 brigade HQs start their training to help with the development of Mars. And with the completion of Research Rate 240 8 labs are focused on Jump Point Theory now, which should speed up completion to November 1891.

That’s it for today…

1891
Completed techs: Active Grav Sensor 12, Fire Control Speed 2000km/s, 12cm Railgun
New techs being researched: Construction Rate 14, Thermal Sensor 8, Active Grav Sensor 16, Reduced Size Launcher 0.5 Size / 5x Reload, Gravitational Survey Sensors

At the end of January a new scientist graduates from the academy, Karina von Glauber has specialized in the field of Construction and Production (10%) and is able to coordinate work in up to 15 labs. She starts to look into improved ways for construction. With the “old” Humboldt Shuttle MK2s getting close to their intended deployment time they will be scrapped and replaced when they return to Earth next.

In mid-May the population on Mars reaches 120m people and it is decided that for now no more colonists will be allowed to move to Mars on a large scale.

At the end of November Jump Point Theory research is completed and Grav Sensor 16 research is dropped in favor of Gravitational Survey Sensors. Leaving the Solar system seems like the only way to find good sized mineral deposits. A future Grav Survey vessel will be most likely based on a fighter chassis as well. Dang, those are construction brigades, not battalions, well, time to build one additional troop transport and modify the others to 5 transport modules.

1892
Completed techs: Railgun Velocity 2, Mining Rate 14, Gravitational Survey Sensors, Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor Tech
New techs being researched: Railgun Velocity 3, Research Rate 280, Jump Drive Efficiency 4, Ion Drive Tech

After completion of the conversion of conventional industries construction of a Spaceport is started. And after a construction time of just 2 months it is completed and should help with the turn-around of goods (and troops?) on Earth. The freed up capacities are split between research labs and conversion into automines.

In June the Gravitational Survey Sensors are ready and a new ship is designed. It is called the Kopernikus Shuttle and just swaps the Humboldt’s GeoSensor for a GravSensor.

Gravitational Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Fighter for production, combat and maintenance purposes

Research into Active Grav Sensor 16 is taken up again. By mid-July the Soruim reserves on Earth have been exhausted. 8 additional construction brigades and their HQs start training. In August the first Kopernikus Shuttle is completed and starts its survey. 100 automines are send to the comet Temple-1 mainly for Mercassium (Neutronium 42kt @0.6, Corbomite 40kt @0.6, Tritanium 52kt @0.5, Mercassium 117kt @0.8 and Gallicite 10kt @0.9 ) and a mining output is established, a Mass Driver is send shortly afterwards.

On September 25th, the first Jump Point is found in the Sol System, it was at the first of the locations the scientists marked. Overall they marked 30 locations. The theory is proven to be true. Fregattenkapitän Christine Ballack is awarded the Explorer Medal for this feat. The JP is located about another Sun to Earth distance outside the orbit of Saturn at about 95°.

Scientists are already working on a Jump Drive, but it will take at least 2 more years before it is completed at the moment, but more resources will be allocated to its research now. In October a second Kopernikus Shuttle is completed with a third and fourth under construction.

By mid-December the GeoSurvey program starts to wind down, there are only 2 objects left to be surveyed, but both are out of reach for the current shuttles. There are high hopes the Ion Drives will be able to remedy this problem.

1893

Completed techs: Thermal Sensor 8, Active Grav Sensors 16, Salvage Module 500
New techs being researched: Beam Fire Control Range 16kkm, Fire Control Speed 3000km/s, Additional Maintenance Storage, Fuel Production 48k liters

A second Jump Point is found very close to the orbit of Jupiter, at about 300° in January.

In July the 50th research lab is established, but the lack of construction/production specialists is still hampering basic booster technologies. In preparation for exploring outside of the Sol System 2 new naval shipyards are under construction. Higher speeds and more endurance will be needed by the new survey vessels and while large ships are still considered too big and expensive for the potential dangers fighter based ships are deemed too small. Ships with a tonnage below 1kt might provide the answer, but it will have to be seen what can be achieved with the new Ion Drives when they are ready. In addition a fighter chassis is too small to have enough supplies to repair the sensors.

In August a 3rd Jump Point is found beyond the orbit of Neptune, at about 175°. On October 3rd Tatiana von Still graduates from the academy, she has specialized on Construction/Production (20%) and has a great talent of work organization (admin 5). She is assigned the prestigious project to look into ways to improve research output (280).

At the end of April a larger civilian Ion Engine prototype is completed and tested.

In May the GravSurvey of the Sol System is completed, overall 3 jump points were found, but Humanity currently still lacks the means to use jump points, but research into the two last missing components in under way and expected to be completed by the end of February 1895.

In June construction of the two new naval shipyards is completed and expansion of the number of slipways to 2 is started. Despite a full construction corps (4 x 4 battalions) working on financial industries on Mars only 2 are completed by the end of the year. Currently there is no need at all for better finances, but with close to 22k construction capacity allocated to new labs at the moment (research is the highest priority) this will change sooner or later.

In June Tritanium supplies on Earth have been exhausted, but the stockpile is still at 105kt and there are still supplies on 3 colonies currently being mined.

At August 19th, Humanities first Jump Ship, SMS Kepler has been completed and starts to move towards Jump Point #1. Kapitän zur See Werner Clausen commands the Kepler. A second Kepler class is ordered. At August 23rd the first jump into a new system has been completed, Humanity is making large steps in becoming an interstellar race. The new system is called Berlin, after the capital of Germany. It consists of two stars, an orange K-class (60% mass of the Sun) and a brown T-class (3% mass of the Sun) with just a single planet with a surface temperature of about 63 degrees orbiting the K-class. With the first new Humboldt FAC about to be completed SMS Kepler jumps back to Sol and waits. Kapitän Werner Clausen is awarded the Explorer Medal for the first successful jump.

The newly constructed SMS Humboldt is tasked with exploring the sole planet in the Berlin system. On August 30th, the jump was successfully completed. Proving that a small jump ship can serve as a mobile jump gate for other ships. Sadly Berlin A-I turns out to be a fairly unremarkable terrestrial planet with a gravity of 0.2, only has traces of atmosphere and no magnetic field. A very inhospitable planet for life. Completed techs: Active Grav Sensor 21, Hangar Deck, EM Sensor Sensitivity 11, Shipyard Operations 10% Time/Cost Savings

New techs being researched: Improved Geo Survey, Engineering Section Fighter, Electronic Warfare, Spinal Mount, Sorium Harvester

Jump Point #2 leads to the Hamburg system which consists of a double sun as well, a yellow G-class nearly the same size as the sun which is orbited by 4 planets, 2 Gas Giants, 1 Dwarf and 1 Terrestrial, none of them look very habitable at first sight. One of Hamburg A-IV – Gas Giant – moons looks better, but only a GeoSurvey will reveal more details. The jump point back to Sol is located outside the orbit of Hamburg B, a L-class red dwarf and at an angle of about 290°.  After refueling from the Kepler and waiting for a couple of minutes for the jump drive to reload Humboldt starts the survey of Hamburg. In the meantime Kepler heads to jump point #3.

JP3 leads to the Hannover system. It consists of a single orange K-class sun (0.5 sun masses) with 12 planets, about 90 moons and 610 asteroids. The jump point back to Earth is located just outside the orbit of Hannover A-VIII, a terrestrial planet 2.6bkm away from the sun and at an angle of 200°. Only 4 bodies with atmospheres are present, 2 planets with Carbon Dioxide/Sulphur (very close to the sun and very hot), 1 planet with Helium/Hydrogen (fairly far from the sun and cold) and 1 moon with Nitrogen/Carbon Dioxide/Oxygen in the habitable area. The moon will be surveyed first since it looks like a fairly promising candidate for a colony. Colony costs in this AAR will only be known once the GeoSurvey has taken place.

After this first look into Hannover Kepler heads back to the Hamburg jump point in order to provide fuel for the Humboldt working there. In the meantime a mothership for the survey craft has been designed, the Kondor-class, at 14.5kt the largest ship of Earth’s space navy and larger than any blue water ship build in recent times. Retooling of Zeppelin-Werke is started. A Flag Bridge is installed to help with exploration and potential alien contacts.

Fuel Capacity 3 220 000 Litres    Range 50.5 billion km   (352 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes
The Kondor is able to carry 5 survey FACs and 2 sensor fighters, one with a resolution 1 sensor (range about 11mkm) and a second one with a resolution 100 sensor (range about 115mkm). Design of the sensors will start when the next batch of labs is freed up.

At the end of January the first Kopernikus FAC is completed and heads towards Hamburg to start looking for new jump points. In February 6.2mt of Corundium @0.8 are found on the 4th moon of the gas giant Hamburg A-IV. Its colony cost is 5.3, -166 degrees and the wrong atmosphere (mainly hydrogen), but at a fairly low 0.33 pressure. So no real terraforming candidate in the short run, but a fair number of automines would solve all Corundium problems.

In March Corbomite supplies on Earth have been exhausted, stockpiles are good at 92kt and there are 4 currently mines sources for it in the Sol System. On Mai GeoSurvey of Hamburg is close to being completed and the second Kepler jumpship moves to the Hannover jump point to enable the survey of this system and especially the interesting looking moon.

At the end of July the GeoSurvey of the Hamburg System has been completed. Except for the 4th moon of Hamburg A-IV nothing significant has been found. The two remaining GeoSurvey ships head back to Earth to refuel and then move to the Hannover System. Meanwhile the GeoSurvey of the interesting looking moon – Hannover A-IV moon 8 has been completed and a fair number of metal deposits have been found (but with most being fairly hard to access except for 47mt of 0.6 Duranium). In addition to the fairly good Duranium source the moon is perfectly habitable. In order to speed up building of a jump gate stabilizer factories on Earth start to pre-build components. Kapitän zur See Florian Oggenfuss of the SMS Humboldt and Kapitän zur See Werner Clausen are both awarded the Explorer Medal for the participation in the survey of Moon 8 which is renamed New Berlin (second award for Werner Clausen).

In September a destroyed alien outpost is discovered on Hannover A-IV Moon 7. A Xenologist team lead by Norbert Doppler is send there to examine the ruins. In addition there seems to be an anomaly that might help with research there as well. A few days later a new jump point is found in the Hamburg System and the 3rd Kepler jumpship heads there to investigate.

SMS Kepler 3 arrives in the Munchen system, consisting of a yellow G-class sun (90% mass) and 12 planets. The jump point to Hamburg is located outside the orbit of Munchen A-VII a gas giant about 1.8bkm away from the sun and at an angle of 170°. 4 of the planets and a moon have an atmosphere. 1 Carbon Dioxide/Nitrogen Dioxide, 1 Nitrogen with traces of Oxygen and Argon, 1 Nitrogen/Methane/Ammonia, 1 Hydrogen/Helium and the small terrestrial moon with Helium/Hydrogen.

The two Nitrogen planets might turn out to be fairly habitable after a closer examination, except for the temperatures which seem to be fairly low which can be guessed from the extensive ice sheet. But most important of all is a stabilized jump gate leading back to Hamburg and 2 wrecks between the two nitrogen planets Munchen A-III and A-IV. As soon as the drive is back online Kepler 3 jumps back to Hamburg and relays its findings back to Earth via Kepler 2 still waiting on the jump point back to Sol.

It should be Neue Berlin if you're going with Deutsche flavour :D

Interesting idea, those recon fighters. Could have even built them without engines, and just have the carrier deploy them occasionally. But being able to move does give you more flexibility.

Neu-Berlin actually ;)

Yeah, I always tend to send those kind of recon-craft with my carrier based bombers/fighters, but they are fairly handy for actively searching for aliens as well.

My main fleet will mostly just use passives and have another flight of recons still in the hangar together with a CAP. At least till fairly high tech levels when I simply use 3 gigantic active sensors on PD-ships.

At the beginning of February the two recon fighters have been completed and they head out towards the Munchen System. I assign intel-officers to them, but am still not sure if they really help with sensor data. In the meantime Hannover A-I has been surveyed, showing huge mineral deposits, but sadly they will be next to impossible to mine. In Early March the GravSurvey of Hamburg has been completed, except for the one jump point into the interesting Munchen System there are no other jump points. The survey ships heads towards Earth to refuel and then continue to Hannover.

On March, 21st the recon fighters arrive in Munchen and start to move towards the two wrecks, both sensors are activated. On April 1st they arrive at the wrecks without having detected anything and continue towards the planets close to the wrecks – Munchen A-III and A-IV, but eventually planning to scan all planets close to their route back out of the system. By April 10th the six innermost planets have been scanned, but no sign of life or spacecraft have been found. It remains a mystery what or who has destroyed the two wrecks. The recon fighters head back towards Earth.

There seems to be a large number of large mineral deposits in Hannover, together with the habitable planet Hannover A-IV it seems like the perfect alternative to Earth. Maybe a GeoSurvey team is able to improve the accessability of some minerals.

In June a jump point is found in Hannover, it lies beyond all planetary orbits at the beginning of the asteroid field, about 5.7bkm from the sun at 180°. In July retooling of the Zeppelin-Werke for the Kondor-class carrier is completed and construction is started. At the same time construction of a second slipway for Zeppelin-Werke is started.

At the end of July the new Hannover jump point is explored. It leads to the Bonn System, a trinary of very small M- and L-class suns. Planets are detected around Bonn-B, but it is 570bkm away, ot seems unlikely that it will ever be explored. Kepler 1 returns to Hannover. With the fairly frequent refueling needed now a dedicated tanker design is next on the to-do list., but currently all shipyards are busy.

In September retooling for the Geier-class salvager is completed and construction of 3 Geiers is started. A few days later a new jump point is found in Hannover. This one right in the orbit of Hannover A-VI, about 540mkm from the sun at an angle of 100°. Kepler 2 is send to investigate. It leads to the Bremen System, and as with Munchen there is a jump gate already established on the Bremen side of the gate. Bremen is a binary of two G-class stars close to the same size as Sol with Bremen-B orbiting A at about 6bkm. The JP is about 1bkm and 40° from Bremen-A. Bremen-B has 6 planets, about 20 moons and 30 asteroids. At first glance nothing seems to stands out and Kepler 2 jumps back to Hannover.

In October research into Improved GravSensors is completed and 3 of them are build for upgrading the survey ships later in. Humboldt 1 heads back to Earth and gets refitted with an improved GeoSensor. The slipways for the Kopernikus-class are refitted as well for an improved GravSensor. With Mercassium starting to get low and stockpiles piling up on Temple-1 and Wolf an additional Mass Driver is send to each mining colony.

In early January SMS Kronos is completed, the first Jump Gate Construction ship. It heads towards the Hannover jump point to establish a gate there. A second Kronos is ordered and will be completed in about 1 year, the prefabricated construction module helps to lower the time. A couple of days later the expansion of Sector Command is completed. Once New Berlin is colonized the Hannover System will be covered as well. Construction of a third commercial shipyard is ordered

In May a new jump point was found in the Berlin System, it is located inside Berlin-B’s orbit, about 1.7bkm from Berlin-A at an angle of 185°. Since Kepler 2 has to refuel anyway it is ordered to move from Hannover – were it served as a tanker for the GeoSurvey – back to Earth and then continue on to the new Berlin JP.

The JP leads to the Essen System. Except for a single yellow G-class star about 8% larger than Sol the system is empty. Kepler 2 will remain on station to enable to GravSurvey ships currently still working in Berlin to head to Essen next.

In July the first permanent jump gate build by Humanity has been completed. It leads from Sol to Hannover. The counterpart is Hannover is started right next. In August 2 additional Keplers are completed both as jump ships and ersatz-tankers. Shortly afterwards the GravSurvey of Berlin is completed, except for the JP leading to Essen nothing was found.

In October SMS Geier is completed, the first salvager. But without any jump ships large enough to move a Geier salvaging the wrecks will have to wait till jump gates have been constructed to Hamburg and Munchen. 2 additional Kronos gate builders are already under construction. In addition a new commercial shipyard – Sommer Marine Group – has been completed. A 10kt tanker is designed, the Seekuh-class and construction is started at the new yard and another slipway is started as well.

On December, 5th SMS Kronos completes the counterpart of the Sol/Hannover gate. Colonists are encouraged to move to Hannover A-IV/New Berlin. The Kronos move to the Sol/Hamburg JP in order to construct a gate there.

And here they come…

At the end of January the second Kronos-class gate builder is completed and is tasked with building a gate on the Hannover/Bremen jump point. For some reason the game will not assign “good” officers to construction and salvage ships. They benefit from factory production bonus, but the game will happily assign crew training officers to them, so remember to change them.

At the beginning of February Magneto-Plasma Drive Tech is completed and after some testing a couple of engines are designed. Two military drives (1HS and 5HS) and a 25HS commercial engine. Based on tests with the survey FACs a speed increase about 30% is expected.

Also in September Kronos 2 finishes the Hannover/Bremen gate and with a ancient counterpart already in place the gate builder heads towards the Hannover/Bonn jump point to construct a gate there. With New Berlin’s population assumed to reach 10 million by the end of the year 100 mines are transported from Earth to New Berlin in October.

Still in October a new jump point has been found in Bremen, about 3bkm from Bremen-A at an angle of 115°. This jump point has an ancient gate as well. It seems more and more likely that there has been a time when this system was visited and maybe even settled by aliens. With 5 GeoSurvey ships already at work around Bremen-B it is too late to send in recon fighters before committing survey ships, but up to now nothing bad has happened.

Research into improved Research and Shipbuilding Rates was completed at the same time and due to the mineral situation all 30 freed up labs (out of 102 total) are allocated to research Mining Rate 20, the maximum number of labs the currently best CP specialist (20%) is able to handle. And with Kronos 1 having completed the Hamburg/Sol gate and no other urgent projects it heads back to Earth for a refit.

In November Kepler 3 finishes its overhaul and is send to investigate the new gated jump point in Bremen. Kepler 2 heads there as well as a ersatz-tanker. Two weeks later 2 new jump points are found in Bremen, both already gated as well. Kepler 2 is retasked with exploring the 3rd JP. A couple of days later the GeoSurvey craft have completed the survey of the 6 planets, 20 moons and 30 asteroids, nothing remarkable was found. They are ordered to refuel at Kepler 4 and wait for further orders. JP2 leads to the Köln System and there is already a gate in place there as well.

With a G-class sun, 7 planets (4 of them terrestrial), and 70 moons Koln looks like a likely source for the aliens who have build the gates. The 2 freshly constructed recon fighters are ordered to scan the system. In the meantime Kepler 3 will take a look at JP4 in Bremen.

By mid December Kepler 3 discovers the Dusseldorf System, again with a gate leading back to Bremen. With a F-class sun 50% larger than Sol, 6 planets (2 terrestrial) and 65 moons Dusseldorf might be the home system of the aliens as well. Especially since there are two wrecks right at orbit of Dusseldorf A-I, which might be a habitable world. Dusselfdorf becomes the new priority for the recon fighters.

No further investigation is ordered till there has been a recon sweep. In Hamburg Kronos 3 has completed its gate and with a alien gate already in place on the other side heads back to Earth for a refit. JP3 leads to the Frankfurt System which seems fairly unremarkable, a single G-class sun (85% mass) and just two planets that look very unlikely to be habitable. The only thing remarkable is the gate already in place, but this has become the norm with the Bremen jump points by now.

I have 2 main types of scout fighters, with very different jobs.

First, there is the jump pinnace, which are 200 tons (before efficiency 5 tech) or 250 ton and 500 ton (after efficiency 5 tech), with size 1, 2 and 3 sized engines respectively.  These are designed to be based on Earth, or later a colony world with a PDC CV, with 3 year endurance and 60+ billion km range.  Each is likely to probe every body in multiple systems before having to go back for fuel and maintenance.

Second, there are fast sprint scouts.  You can body check with fast scouts once you have carriers and jump tenders, it is safer, but uses a lot more fuel.  But 80 ton scouts don't use that much more fuel than 250 ton scouts over the same distance traveled.

But sprint scouts can't serve as pickets, cause they have no crew or maintenance endurance.

New Berlin will soon reach a population of 10 million and demand some form of protection. With the troop transports scheduled for refit and no military ships at all this will become a problem. The only alternative at the moment is a PDC which will be prefabricated on Earth and moved to New Berlin. The current design is more show than substance and nobody has to know that no missiles have been actually designed or build yet…

But the main problem is the Duranium crunch and while there are enough mines to deal with it in the long run it will be hard for a while. 54 automines will be moved from Wolf (Corundium) to Ceres (Duranium). It might get even harder considering the danger of meeting potentially hostile aliens. With the lack of minerals higher efficiency/tech are more important. Salvaging might help here – and with resources as well – but currently Humanity lacks a dedicated transport ship under direct control. There are two designs which should remedy this, but are partially limited by current shipyard capacity:

After having been refueled by Kepler 3 the recon fighters start their scan of the Dusseldorf System and head towards the two wrecks detected in the orbit of Dusseldorf A-I, a potentially habitable planet. The journey into the inner system will take close to 23 days.

On January 21st at 08:56 the suspicions about Dusseldorf prove to be correct, there is a aliens presence here. 4 alien ships of 3 different classes massing 8.55kt each are detected by the active sensors at a distance of 196mkm. The recon fighters stop and try to keep the distance from the aliens while hailing them and stating their peaceful intentions.

Sensor data shows that the aliens move at a speed of 7.2kkm/s, more than twice the speed of the recon fighters. After having stopped for one hour and sending their hails the fighters start to retreat towards the jump point and Kepler 3 jumps out of the system. The recon fighters are ordered to ignore the jump point and try to move past it, but the aliens will reach them before reaching the jump point anyway.

Active sensor coming online in combination with the 2 wrecks already in system do not bode well…
(https://s18.directupload.net/images/190811/2mw5iw46.jpg)

At January 22nd, 20:50:46 the recon fighters are hit by 3 missiles. Based on their flight patterns they are theorized to be anti-ship missiles, but since they were launched at point blank range it is hard to say for sure. Each missile caused a strength 13 nuclear explosion. 15 crew make it to the lifepods and are stranded in Dusseldorf with no hope for rescue.

When news about the destruction of the recon fighters reaches Earth construction and research priorities are switched to war mode. Meyer Werft which has been building the gate builders is converted to the Lastesel-class heavy transport since wrecks might prove to treasure trove of important technologies and to move PDCs away from Earth.

All ships in Bremen are ordered into the Koln System to start surveys there, the most important point is trying to prevent the Hannover jump point from looking like the origin of Earth ships. Maybe the impression can be established that Humanity comes from the Koln System, even though it is very likely that the aliens have already surveyed Koln. Kepler 3 volunteers to stay at the Bremen/Dusseldorf jump point and look for an alien transit.

Due to the range advantage the Dusseldorf Aliens better sensors are a high priority. With improved sensor tech expected to be 3 years away from completion larger sensors seem to be the only way in the short term. A size 10 sensor able to spot 5kt ships would have a range of close to 400mkm and take about 3 month to develop. Improving the planetary sensor network would take about the same time. Both projects are started, but first research into better beam fire control tech will have to be completed in order to build a beam PD fighter/FAC.

Industrial capacity will be focused on Ordnance Production Factories and Fighter Production Factories for now. But currently missile technology is hardly known, this has to be remedied soon. On March, 7th the Heidi Baum GeoTeam completes its survey of New Berlin, revealing additional Sorium desposists and a 14.8mt Corundium Deposit @0.9. Overall still sadly hard to mine the bulk of the minerals.

A couple of days later the first Fokker R1 is completed and heads heads towards New Berlin in order to provide some protection. Taskforce Carrier 1 is ordered there as well to provide some logistical support for the fighters.

On March, 19th a population of a new race of aliens is detected at Koln A-III, it has a thermal signature of 4.9k and an EM emission of 49k while Earth has 35k/170k. Either this civilization is fairly backwards or this is a minor colony. Newly established Diplomacy Team  Ulrich Bodendorf tries to establish communication.

Communication with the Koln aliens is established less than one week after initial contact. They identify themselves as the Iroquois Imperium and seem to be fairly peaceful, but it will take some time to work out a deeper translation of their language. At first sight they seem to be a race of heavily enhanced man-machines.

With the second Fokker arriving at New Berlin the population feel more secure, unrest is no longer rising. And construction on Earth is switched to Financial Industries, since those do not need any Duranium and might become useful later on.

In June the Duranium stpckpile has stabilized and is back above 1kt. The new FAC sensor ship is designed and a shipyard is retooled. In September Box-Launcher research is expected to be completed. A new FAC based on those launchers is planned. With the Dusseldorf aliens not having left their system there is some hope that it might be possible to bring the fight to them. Humanity still burns for revenge.

In mid June an already established jump gate is found in Koln, it is located close to 5bkm from Koln-A at a angle of 310°. Kepler 5 heads there to investigate. A short time later the final GravSurvey is conducted and no further jump point was found. The first Seekuh tanker arrives at New Berlin from Earth, a second delivery is ordered, this will greatly cut down on the overhead needed to keep the survey ships in operation.

Kepler 5 jumps into the Nurnberg System, which consist of a small M-class sun (7% mass) and 2 planets. Due to the weak radiation from Nurnberg-A no life is possible there. The survey ships start to explore the system. And as expected, there is a gate at the Nurnberg-side as well. But it seems very unlikely that the Iroquois came from Nurnberg, most likely there is another gate in Nurnberg.

With the Duranium stockpile still rising retooling for the Kondor Mk2 carrier is started. At the beginning of August a ungated jump point is found in Nurnberg. It is located about 1.5bkm from Nurnberg-A at an angle of 350°. The JP leads into an equally boring system, Stuttgart. It consists of a single K-class sun and a single terrestrial planet orbiting it, due to the closeness to the sun the planet is very hot and seems uninhabitable. Another jump point is found in Nurnberg again without a gate, this one about 1.8bkm away from the sun at an angle of 135°. Kepler 3 heads there from New Berlin.

With no further jump points found in Nurnberg is seems very likely now that the Iroquois are not a very technically advanced race, which found fit in with the fairly low emissions from their planet and the lack of space ships or space stations as well.

The final Nurnberg jump point leads to the Mannheim System, consisting of 2 G-Class sun (around 90% mass) with Mannheim-B orbiting A at a distance of 0.1 lightyears. Mannheim-B has 6 planets with a fair number of moons, but due to the distance it is hard to make out any details. Mannheim-A has 9 planets with Mannheim A-III to V being in the habitable zone as well as being terrestrial planets. Further investigation might yield interesting results. In addition to the planets there are about 30 moons and 25 asteroids. With the JP more than 3bkm from the inner planets and due to the distances involved to reach Mannheim it will take some time before a large scale survey can be launched.

A missile fire control is tailor made for the Dusseldorf aliens (resolution 8kt for their 8.55kt ships) in addition to a size 6 box launcher. Speed is somewhat below what was seen from the aliens, but it is hoped that the missile range will be high enough to enable a timely retreat. A size 6 ASM is designed for the launcher/control combo as well. Since the enemy has been firing AAMs with a strength warhead the idea is using a large number of fairly small warheaded missiles from long range instead of large warheads. Retooling a shipyard and production of the missiles is begun. The next generation of carriers will have to incorporate magazins in order to reload the missile boats.

In November the first Lastesel transport is completed. Together with a Geier salvager it heads off into the Munchen system to salvage the 2 wrecks there. Followed shortly afterwards by another transport/salvager pair.

In early December a jump point is found in Stuttgart. It is located about 400mkm from the sun at an angle of 200°. Kepler 2 moves to investigate. The JP leads to the Dresden System, which has a single G-class sun (108% mass). There are 6 planets, about 60 moons and a couple of asteroids. There is one terrestrial planet inside the habitable zone which looks interesting.

A new jump point is found a Stuttgart a short while later. About 1bkm from the sun at 105°. Kepler 4 moves to investigate.

There is a difference between scouting and forward observer role.  Scouting, you want to know if somebody is there without revealing yourself.  Ships and fighters with EM sensors are the most likely to detect an enemy very far out, because long ranged anti-ship sensors are noisy as hell.

The forward observer sacrifices endurance for speed, and is supposed to be able to make the system ring like a bell, and hopefully you can have a combination of size and sensor reach that fits a hole in the enemy sensor capabilities.

If they have a res 10 sensor, maybe your 200 ton scout (2 HS in engines, 1 HS in sensor) will have the edge.  If they have a res 1 sensor, maybe you want a 500 ton scout with a 3 HS sensor, as it will be detected at the same range, but be able to shadow the enemy from much further out.

I would consider it a very unfriendly act for someone new to my system to wander around with a forward observer active sensor, lighting up my fleet for whatever long ranged bombardment options they had.

I like my long endurance scout pinnaces for the job they have to do, to check if systems are safe for surveying.  They are cheapish, require little micro, and I don't need to pay much attention to them, except for noting on the Galactic map whether a given system has been body checked or not.  But if there are wrecks in a system, or a habitable body, that is a job for recon missiles and/or fleet scouts, after checking with an EM scout that the jump point isn't within active sensor range of anybody.

Ah well, every empire has to learn sometime. :)  Fortunately, it is REALLY easy to just come out with a new generation of fighter scouts, and the old ones still have some utility.

Was that to get nice round numbers and no extra crew berths?

And yeah, double contact! I do like how everything seems to evolve so organically in your game. Good luck with the aliens!

Yes, no extra berths was the idea. In addition it actually helps a little bit with extra endurance for jump point picket duty.

The last jump point in Stuttgart leads to the Magdeburg System. It consists of a G-class sun (94% mass), 4 planets (one might be habitable), 2 moons and 6 comets.

Two new jump points are discovered in Dresden, both inside the orbit of Dresden A-IV, the first at 70° and the second at 90° from the sun. Kepler 2 heads there to investigate.

In February the first 5 Falke missile boats are completed. They are loaded with missiles and have to wait for the carrier from New Berlin due to their limited range. In the meantime a slightly improved missile has been developed and construction started.

The first jump point in Dresden leads to the Dortmund System with a binary sun, a G-class (99% mass ) orbited by a smaller K-class (82%) at a distance of 0.25 lightyears. Both suns have planets, but due to the range Dortmund-B’s planets are not relevant for further exploration. Dortmund-A has 10 planets, 50 moons, 1200 asteroids and 10 comets. There are 2 planets in the habitable zone, but one of them is a gas giant, the other one terrestrial, but at the outer edge of the zone and thus fairly cold.

The exploration of the second Dresden JP leads back to Sol which is a huge surprise since it was assumed that all jump points in Sol have already been discovered. It seems like there are some holes in the current Jump Point Theory since the existence of the additional jump point in Sol can not be explained by the theory. But this shortcut will be very useful in the exploration and potential exploitation of the Bremen/Koln System arm.

A ruined outpost is found on Dresden A-II and a XenoTeam is ordered there. Upon taking a closer look at one of the larger installations it seems very likely that this installation would be able to help with defensive research and speed up the research by up to 40%. The salvage of the first wrecks in Munchen yields nothing but minerals, all relevant systems were destroyed beyond recognition or salvage. The same happens at the second wreck a short time later. Both salvagers head back to Earth.

In March Humanity gains trade access to the Iroquois Imperium. At the beginning of April another jump point is found in Dresden, this time beyond the orbit of Dresden A-VI, more than 5bkm from the sun at an angle of 85°. One of the new Kepler Mk2s will take a look and arrives in the Duisburg System, the first Quadrinary encountered by Humanity.

Duisburg-A is a G-class sun (144% mass) orbited by Duisburg-D another G-class sun only a little bit smaller (96%) at a distance of 3bkm. Farther out the double stars B (G-class, 143%) and C (G-class, 142%) orbit at a distance of about 20bkm. All suns have planets and the system look very interesting for an in depth survey.
Duisburg-A: 5 planets with 6 moons between them, 2 terrestrial planets in the habitable zone
Duisburg-D: 7 planets with 9 moons, 2 terrestrial planets in the habitable zone
Duisburg-C: 4 terrestrial planets with 2 moons, but all outside of the habitable zone
Duisburg-B: 4 terrestrial planets with 2 moons, 2 in the habitable zone

On July, 2nd the first carrier task force in addition to 2 recon fighters and 10 Fokker fighters arrive at the Bremen/Dusseldorf jump gate and refuel before jumping into Dusseldorf itself. All sensors are active and the 1 recon fighter (R1, 19mkm), 1 recon FAC (R100, 392mkm) and 5 missile boats start to move towards the wrecks. At 07:51 on the 9th contact is made with 4 alien ships, all at 8,550tons, 1 Sheffield, 2 Amazon and 1 Vanguard class. The recon craft retreat towards the carrier while the missile boats wait for now. At 15:11 the alien ships are in range, each missile boat targets one enemy and the Sheffield-class is targeted twice, orders are to fire synchronus. Due to strong enemy ECM and lack of any ECCM system the firing range is lowered to 104mkm. At 16:44 the missiles are launched and the missile boats start to head back towards the carrier at 7.2kkm/s, at tad slower than the aliens at 7,238km/s.

The missiles have a chance of 57% to hit the aliens and the strength 4 warheads are not able to penetrate the alien armor which has a thickness of at least 2. Sheffield is hit 5 times by the first flight and 4 missiles miss, 7 hits from the second flight of nine missiles, no PD is observed. Vanguard PD destroys 2 missiles, 2 miss and 5 hit. Amazon 2 destroys 3 and is hit by just 1, 5 miss. Amazon 1 destroys 4 and is hit by 2 missiles, 3 miss. The PD was energy weapon based. No change in the flight pattern or speed can be observed and no atmosphere from any cracks in the armor, essentially the attack did not cause any real damage.

When all ships are back at the carrier Kapitän zur See Nikolaus Laufenberg asks Fregattenkapitän Lukas Rewald of the S1 Recon Fighter if he and his crew would be willing to volunteer for waiting in system till the last possible moment before jumping out in order to provide intelligence about the likely missile strike about to occure and Rewald agrees.

The first important fact is that the Sheffield and Vanguard keep their distance at a range of about 130mkm while the Amazons close in. Making the Amazons most likely close ranged vessels. After about 1 hour the Vanguard even starts to move away while the Sheffield starts to close the distance as well. At a distance of about 50mkm the Amazons stop. Flights of 3 and 2 size 5 missiles are spotted moving at a speed of 31kkm/s. Each waves seems to be about 40 seconds apart from the next. With this information The recon fighters jumps out of the system and move to New Berlin.

Due to the small number of missiles 2 Fokker fighters might actually be able to destroy 1 incoming missile (23% for each shot)m but they were left behind to guard the jump point. A better offensive missile is needed to damage the alien ships anyway, the Dorn Mk2. While 1 less engine and more agility would improve the chances to hit (by about 7%), but the speed would be lowered (by about 6k) and with the enemy PD capabilities higher speed seems preferable.

At 03:38:06 a hostile transit is detected. 2 Amazon and 1 Sheffield have arrived in Bremen. The Fokker squad tries to follow and target Amazon 1, which is using active sensors. But due to the untrained crews they take a lot of time before they are able to open fire and the enemy is out of reach soon. But it seems that they have expended all their missiles and their PD seems to be only defensive in nature, no shots are fired at the Fokker squadron.

At 03:38:31 all fighters are ready to fire, but the enemy remains out of reach and the Fokkers are ordered to follow the slowly retreating recon fighters. At 03:38:41 Fokker 1 is hit by an alien ASM and is destroyed. It seems like the aliens still do have missiles, but due to the short range they were not detected before impact and due to this could not be engaged by PD. The next 2 waves are detected and intercepted by the railguns. Due to system error PD failed to engage a flight of missiles and Fokker 3 is destroyed (tried to change the PD settings and messed up). A flight of 9 size 1 missiles moving at 56kkm/s is dectected among swarms of size 5s, they will be very hard to intercept, but in the end fire from 6 Fokkers was enough to neutralize them (12-14% to hit).

At 03:45:01 size 1 and size 5 missiles arrived at the same time, overwhelming the PD, 2 Fokkers are destroyed. The number of missiles passing the fighters and targeting the carrier is rising. At 04:03:56 SMS Kondor is hit by a ASM for 13 damage, all FACs are launched as a precaution and follow the carrier. At 04:09:06 SMS Kronos is destroyed. In hindsight it would have been better to keep the fighter escort with the carrier instead of trying to ambush the aliens at the jump point. Especially with untrained crews who are not able to take advantage of the enemies weakness after a jump. Future tactics will be adjusted accordingly. A Falke missile boat is destroyed by the remaining missiles.

After having moved away from the remaining ships for some time the aliens start to follow the fighter group again. At 05:27:01 a new flight of 9 size 1 missiles appears on the screens. The salvos are 10 seconds apart. Obviously the alien ships still have ordnance left. At 05:27:51 Fokker 2 is destroyed. The R100 recon fighter 10 seconds later. 20 seconds afterwards Fokker 10. While the minimal armor on the fighters was able to absorb some damage earlier it is largely worn down now, leading to lots of kills in short order. And with each Fokker gone the remaining PD capabilities grow weaker. At 05:28:51 Fokker 9 is destroyed. And the missiles keep coming. At 05:30:01 the R1 recon fighter is destroyed, turning the 2 remaining Fokkers unable to see approaching missiles. At 05:35:06 the last fighter is destroyed. At 08:44:51 the FACs are destroyed as well.

Trail of tears…

At July 27th the alien Sheffield 1 rammed a small civilian cargo transport and while the transport was destroyed the Sheffield blew up as well. It looks like the aliens are willing to commit kamikaze attacks. Maybe they mistook the transport for a capital warship due to its 33kt size… Essentially a civilian caused the first casualty to the aliens.

A Ruined Outpost is discovered on Duisburg A-III, in addition a radiations was detected, that turned out to be conetected to research boni in two other places. With the XenoTeam still looking into Dresden A-II it will take some time before these new ruins are examined. At the same time Duisburg A-III turned out to be a perfectly habitable planet, with large deposits of Duranium, Corbomite, Boronite, Sorium and Gallicite, but sadly all will be fairly hard to mine. In addition there is some Mercassium and Vendarite, hard to mine as well.

In the meantime a new Radar TF (1 R100 FAC, 1 R1 recon fighter) arrived in Hannover. Together with the Fokker 2 TF (10 Fokker R1) and the remaining missile boat TF (5 Falke) they head towards Bremen. The Salvage 3 who was send towards Dusseldorf for the two wrecks there arrives at the Hannover/Bremen jump point. It will try to salvage the alien Sheffield class instead, but will wait for the battle force moving into Bremen to give the all-clear before starting, There are at least 2 Amazon vessels still around. At August 9th the battle force arrives in Bremen and heads towards the Dusseldorf gate.

On August 10th the 2 Amazons are detected again, they tried to ram another small civilian cargo ship close to the gate into Koln. The battle group changes course accordingly. Every 2 hours the aliens try to ram, but so far have been unsuccessful, but it seems very likely that they will succeed before the military will be close enough to fire missiles. At 12:46 the small cargo transport is destroyed due to a ramming attack, but its destruction served to reveal that the alien Amazon class has an armor strength of at least 6, Humanity is essentially using unarmored ships. 6 hours later Kepler 1 is destroyed while heading form Koln to the Hannover gate. And on the 12th another small transport is lost to ramming. Later in the days another transport is destroyed, but this time the Amazon which did ram it was destroyed as well. There is 1 Amazon still at large.

One day later the remaining Amazon appears on the sensors of the battle group. Salvage 3 enters Bremen and starts to move to the wreck of the Sheffield class. It looks like the Amazon is moving to another transport in order to ram it as well. And the Amazon seems to be damaged, it is only moving at 4kkm/s instead of the previous 7k. Right before the Amazon reaches the fire the missile boat fire their 45 old ASMs. With a damaged Amazon those might be enough. The Fokker squad starts to speed towards the Amazon as well. But the problem has solved itself at the expense of another civilian transport, both ships are destroyed. What strikes the crews as strange is that neither destroyed alien ship has left behind any lifepods. Then again this might fit in with the suicidal ramming attempts…

The recon craft and the fighters head back to the Sheffield wreck to provide cover for the salvage operation while the missile boats try to pick up lifepods. Salvage of the Sheffield has yielded 1 ECM-3, 5 size 1 missile launchers and 1 Thermal Sensor 11 in addition to a couple of minerals. Salvage 3 moves to the nearest Amazon next. The guards move back to New Berlin. A new kind of PDC, a hangar is designed and pre-fabricated on Earth and will be send to New Berlin to house the fighters.

In September Kepler 3 pick up a espionage team and heads towards the Koln alien planet. It is time to learn more about them. And even if the mission is discovered relations should be good enough that no real problems are to be expected.

Salvage of the Amazon yields knowledge about ECM which provides a small boost to ECM-2 research, 2 magnetic fusion drives, 1 Thermal-11, 1 Missile Fire Control, 1 ECM-3, 1 ECCM-3, and 1 size 5 missile launcher in addition to some minerals. The small transport destroyed by the Amazon is next, but the main focus is to bring back the treasure trove of alien tech to Earth.

With the fuel situation on Earth starting to get below save level (4m liters) despite having build lots of fuel refineries there needs to be another solution. A fuel harvester is designed, the Oase-class.

The second Amazon wreck yields a ECM, missile fire control, engines, launchers and a thermal sensor as well. It turns out that Duisburg has 3 jump points in total, exploration of the 2 newly found JPs is started. The Munster System is found, but seems unremarkable, as is the second new system, Osnabrück.

In order to keep up with the fighters and missile boats a new R1 Radar fighter is designed and constructed.

With the completion of another squad of missile boats and 2 new Kondor carriers a new attack on Düsseldorf is planned and set into motion. 10 Fokker fighters, 2 R1 Radar fighters, 1 R100 Radar FAC and 10 missile boats will participate in the attack supported by 1 tanker. The missile boats will use the improved Dorn Mk2.

Close to the end of December the assembly of the Hangar PDC is finally completed on New Berlin and the Fokker squad moves there. And at the end of the year the espionage team assigned to the Köln aliens finally feels prepared enough to begin their mission (actually I forgot about them ;) ).

After analysis of the debris, salvage and other data about the Düsseldorf aliens the majority of scientists and officers is fairly sure that the aliens are actually robots. Everything found and seen so far points in the same direction.

A newly discovered jump point in Dortmund leads to Kassel, another unremarkable system. At second discovered JP leads to Würzburg which is unremarkable as well. More and more systems on the survey vessels are breaking down, it is time for another round of overhauls. 3 Kamel-class colliers are completed and load Dorn Mk2 missiles. Kamel 1 and 2 load the 280 missiles currently in stock and head towards Düsseldorf.

When getting closer to the wrecks in Düsseldorf 4 new ships of the DUS aliens are detected at or close to the planet Düsseldorf A-I, a terrestrial planet inside the habitable zone. 1 Oueen Elizabeth at 17.1kt moving at 7.2kkm/s, 1 Vanguard at 8.55kt moving at 7.2kkm/s, 1 Invincible at 16.7kt stationary and 1 Ark Royal at 17kt stationary as well. The 2 stationary ships/stations emit a powerful active sensor signal, S126/R1, about 10 times stronger than the small R1 sensors carried by the 2 R1 recon fighters. The 10 Falke missile boats are ordered to fire at the approaching Queen Elisabeth class at a distance of 70mkm the closest alien ship.

With the missiles away the CTF starts to head back towards the jump point. Salvos of 3 size 5 missiles are targeting the fleet but are easily dealt with by the 10 railgun fighters. After 16 salvos the missiles stopped, they arrived at 30 second intervals. Humanities Dorn Mk2 has a 57% chance to hit the Queen Elisabeth class who does not seem to posses a PD system. Its armor class is at least 3, meaning that a single missile is not able to penetrate the armor. After 20 missiles have hit the alien ship it explodes, 3 secondary magazine explosions are detected and since the alien missiles have not reappear this most likely means smaller and short range missiles had been in those magazines.

With the 2 colliers about 1 day behind the CTF and the Vanguard currently 120mkm away and closing at about 3kkm/s it will catch the CTF before the colliers get in range. But for some reason the Vanguard moves away from the CTF. Only shortly before the colliers reach the fleet the Vanguard starts to close in again. The missile boats are reloaded from the colliers and due to the Vanguard just weighting in at 8.5kt only 5 missile boats will fire their 9 Dorn Mk2s at first. Right at the edge of the Dorn’s rage the Vanguard starts to move parallel to the CTF course at the same speed. A short time later the first alien missiles – again 3 size 5 missiles at 30 second intervals – start to arrive. It looks doubtful if the Human missiles will have the endurance to hit the Vanguard.
(https://s18.directupload.net/images/190818/fsad3p7e.jpg) (https://www.directupload.net)

As expected, neither side caused any damage to the other. 17 waves of alien missiles are destroyed by railgun fire and the human missiles ran out of fuel before reaching the Vanguard. With the Vanguard moving away from the CTF, still with missiles in the tubes and colliers and enough fuel Konteradmiral Sylvie Golz orders the fleet to head back to the two stationary alien ships. Before reaching the 2 stations the Vanguard starts to approach and shadows the human ships again just outside the Dorn’s range. Most likely it has restocked its missiles and is launching again.

As expected there are incoming alien missiles a short time later. All are destroyed without any problems. It is decided to follow the Vanguard this time, maybe it can be attacked while taking on new missiles. At least another alien base can most likely be found this way. After plotting the Vanguard’s movement for 13 hours it seems like Asteroid #10 is its target and rearming station. When heading back towards the Human fleet the Vanguard enters much deeper into the Dorn’s range, it is speculated that the outpost ran out of long range missiles, forcing the Vanguard to get closer. 5 missiles boats launch their Dorn Mk2 missiles.

1 missile is destroyed by PD fire, the other missiles get through to the Vanguard, the chance to hit is still 57%. It seems like the Vanguard has a armor strength of at least 3 as well. It takes 20 missiles again to kill the alien ships despite it being only half the size of the Queen Elisabeth, most likely both had the same armor. This time there is only one secondary strength 7 power explosion. The fleet heads towards the stations again. After reloading the missile boats there are 100 Dorn Mk2s left at the colliers. Due to the observed armor 5 missile boats will target each station, since they all arrive at the same time it should help with potential enemy PD as well.

Once inside missile range the CTF stops and the missile boats are launched again. As planed 5 boats target each station. After 30 seconds all missiles are away. Due to the targets being stationary the hit chances are 100%. Neither the Ark Royal nor the Invincible seem to posses PD. The Invincible is destroyed after having been hit by 27 missiles, the Ark Royal took 39. This might mean that the Ark Royal is the most heavily armored vessel of the aliens. By April, 12th the known Düsseldorf aliens have been dealt with, and with the destruction of the aliens the CTF continues towards Düsseldorf A-I and salvage ships are called into the system. Way before the salvagers are in range Asteroid #10 will have been examined as well.

Falke 13 under Korvettenkapitän Eduard Schneidermann destroyed the Invincible receives the Großkampfschiff-Medallie. Falke 6 under Korvettenkapitän Meinhard Volland managed to destroy the other 3 major alien vessels, receiving the Großkampfschiff-Medallie as well. Konteradmiral Sylvie Golz receives the Iron Cross for her leadership during the engagements and her overall strategy, not a single Human life was lost during the battles. In addition all crews receive commendations and extra vacations for their participation in the battle and Xeno Combat medals (dang, should have used German names for medals earlier – Außerirdischen-Kampf Orden ;) ).

No alien presence is detected on Düsseldorf A-I, the fleet moves to the asteroid next. As expected there is a small alien outpost detected on Asteroid #10, 2 troop transports with 2 brigades are dispatched to the asteroid.

In June the ruins on Dresden A-II have been fully surveyed. The race living there have called themselves the Senejan Hegemony and seemed to have possessed Earth’s technology level or a little bit above it. 11 of their installations might still be recoverable and an alien installation should help with research into defense (+40%). 1 Garrison and 3 Construction Brigades will be brought there, the XenoTeam will head to Duisburg A-III.

A short time later the ruins there have been surveyed. The former inhabitants are identified as the Republic of DeWitt. Their tech level seems to have been below current Earth standards. 13 installations might be recoverable and an alien installation on the planet provides a boost to energy research (+50%). The XenoTeam heads to Düsseldorf A-I and while the planet has not been surveyed yet a alien presence there is strongly suspected due to the two alien stations in its orbit.

With some infrastructure having been found in the alien ruins colonists are attracted to Dresden A-II.

The alien outpost on Asteroid #10 in Düsseldorf was only defended by 1 robot garrison unit. It was defeated without any problems. The outpost was acting as a resupply station in addition to having a small listening post. The post will be moved to Düsseldorf A-I along with some infrastructure to establish a colony there. The ground forces who participated in the raid are moved to Düsseldorf A-I as well. Once the survey ships are done with their overhauls Düsseldorf will be the next target for survey.

Salvage of the Düsseldorf alien ships did not yield any surprises, a couple of engines, missile launchers, fire controls and sensors.

Completed techs: Capacitor Recharge 5, Colonization Cost Reduction 5%, Tokamak Fusion Reactor Tech, Thermal Sensor 11, EM Sensor 18,

New techs being researched: Alpha Shields, Capacitor Recharge 6, Heavy Assault Battalion, Internal Confinement Fusion Drive Tech, new sensors,

As expected alien ruins have been located on Düsseldorf A-I along with large deposits of minerals, but it will be very hard to mine them. In addition one of the alien ruins provides a large boost to research into logistics and ground combat (+80%).

Salvage of the unknown wrecks in Düsseldorf yielded mainly minerals, but some knowledge about Internal Confinement Fusion Drive Technology was learned from one of the wrecks as well.

In February the 2 new Graf Zeppelin-class carriers are completed and another 2 are ordered. The survey of the ruins on Dresden A-II is completed as well, some infrastructure, maintenance facilities and 1 mine, factory, fuel refinery, fighter factory and automine were recovered from the ruins. The construction brigades are moved to Duisburg A-III next to help with the ruins there.

Two jump points were found in Düsseldorf, with one leading to Ulm, a binary system with a bunch of planets and asteroids. The other JP leads to Augsburg, a very unremarkable system.

In June the GeoTeam completes the survey of Hannover A-III, increasing the available Duranium from 0.8mt to 7.1mt and accessibility from 0.6 to 1.0 turining it into a prime source for Duranium.

On June, 15th the Kronos gate builder in Münster detects an alien ship right at the jump point where it is just 20 days away from establishing a gate back to Duisburg. The alien ship does not match any class or design previously seem. The Kronos 2 starts to hail the alien ship. The aliens do not respond for now, but seem to be peaceful. Based on its huge thermal signature of 2.4k the alien ship might be a gate builder as well.

Later in June the ruins on Düsseldorf A-I have been fully surveyed. The aliens who lived there called themselves the Pasuruan Imperium and 45 of their installations might be recoverable. Their technology seems to be at the same level as Humanities.

In early July Kronos 2 completes the gate from Münster to Duisburg and moves to the Duisburg/Osnabrück jump point to establish a gate there. A Kepler jump ship is send to the Duisburg/Münster gate to keep watch for alien ships. A bit later the first two Oase fuel harvesters are completed and send to Uranus and Hannover A-VI. Due to the low Duranium levels on Earth (2k) no additional harvesters are build for now. The third harvester is send to Dresden A-V.

In late September communications are established with the aliens encountered in Münster, they call themselves the San Remo Hegemony. 2 of their ships have been encountered yet, in very separate systems, Münster and Ulm. It seems likely that there is a jump point connecting those systems or some of their neighboring systems.

A new alien race has been detected in Hannover, a small 3.3kt ship sits atop an asteriod, the computers designate it the Lucifer-class. It looks like a GeoSurvey ship. It is starting to get crowded, and while the new aliens look peaceful as well, better security is needed. A short time later another new alien ship is encountered, this one seems to focus on the asteroids as well and weights close to 3kt, most likely another GeoSurvey craft. It looks like Humanity really needs some long endurance ships to keep watch on the gate network.

As was expected a jump point in Ulm lead to the Münster system. There is even a gate on the Münster side which has been build by aliens. A Tormenta-class ship (most likely a gate builder) of the Sam Remo aliens sits atop the Ulm/Münster jump point, making it likely that is build the gate observed in Münster. In early December the Ulm/Münster gate is completed, making it nearly 100% certain that the Tormenta is a gate builder.

In mid-December communication is finally established with the aliens encountered in Hannover, they call themselves the Federation of Pelican.

Completed techs: new sensors, Fuel Production 64k liters, Magazine Ejection System 85%, Capacitor Recharge Rate 6, ECCM-2, Alpha Shields, ECM-2, Missile Reload Rate 3

New techs being researched: ECCM-2, Shield Regen 1, Fuel Production 80k liters, Magazine Ejection System 90%, Fuel Consumption 0.6 liters, ECM-2, Beta Shields, Fire Control Speed 5kkm/s, Missile Reload Rate 4

By mid-January all ancient ruins on Duisburg A-III have been exploited, 1 tracking station, 5m liters of fuel, a couple of (auto)mines and 1 construction factory have been recovered in addition to 400 infrastructure. The construction brigades will move to Düsseldorf A-I next.

The expected additional and gated jump point in Münster was found at the end of March. The gate leads to Kiel, the JP in Kiel is gated as well. Kiel is a binary with a couple of planets, two of them terrestrial which are inside the habitable zone and Kiel has lots of asteroids.

The large amount of civilian transports involved in trading with the Iroquois is starting to get annoying, Humanity has 7 state controlled large cargo transports, but when trying to set up an industry on New Berlin in addition to providing the mines needed for it more help from the civilians would be nice. Something will have to be done about the Iroquois. First one of the new Auge recon fighters will be send to their home planet in Köln. Humanity needs better intel.

On May, 28th 12 ships from the Federation of Pelican entered Hannover from the Bremen gate. They move at about 3.1kkm/s and head neither to New Berlin nor to any known jump gate. One of the R1 recon fighters is ordered to follow what has been designated as the Challenger class. The Challenger, Neptune and Templar each have active sensors estimated as S324/R93. The other ships all have thermals of 1.8k and expect for 6 Cataphracts there is just 1 ship of each kind. The Human fleet and PDCs are manned and missiles are loaded despite the aliens not heading towards a Human colony.

The Pelican’s radar signature and ship speed imply a similar or slightly more advanced tech level that Humanities. When the recon fighter gets closer to the alien fleet it is shown that the 3 ships with active sensors have slightly smaller thermal signatures than the other ships, just 1.2k vs. 1.8k. When the recon fighter gets in range for its sensors it detects that the Banshee and Cataphract classes have a cross section of 588 and estimates the tonnage at 29.4kt, the Wasp, Neptune, Blackjack and Templar with cross sections of 392 at 19.6kt. Overall 17 Pelican ships are on various sensors now and it looks like a serious battle fleet with an estimated total weight above 350kt, about 3 times what Humanity is able to field.

A bit later 5 additional Pelican ships are detected, moving at a heading of 300° as well. Sadly all R100 FACs are currently undergoing a refit, so it will not be possible to get data about the whole Pelican fleet. Another day later 5 additional ships are detected. In addition the Corsair and Devastator classes are estimated to weight 29.4kt, the Sentry 19.6kt and the newly observed Stuka, Ferret and Uziel classes 9.8kt with thermal signatures of 0.6k. The Pelican fleet has changed its heading to 270°, but is still not moving towards any known gates or colonies.

On June, 1st the Pelican fleet reverses its course and seems to head back towards the gate back to Bremen. A Mk2 recon fighter with is lower speed but longer range is send to the Bremen gate in order to keep shadowing the Pelican fleet for as long as possible. Based on their heading of 157° they are moving towards the gate to Frankfurt. While following the aliens the recon ship encounters another group of 15 Pelican ships, they head in the exactly different direction, back to Hannover. The Mk3 will follow those ships once they enter Hannover. Contrary to expectations the two fleets united and now all ships are moving at a heading of 157°.

High Command on Earth is still wondering what to make of the Pelican’s moves. The most likely explanations are either a show of force or fleet exercises. With the joined Pelican fleet starting to head back to Hannover the exercise theory seems more likely, but the fleet is put back on alert anyway. Overall the Pelican fleet currently consists of 42 ships. With the Pelican fleet moving around in Hannover in mid-June a destroyed alien outpost has been found on Ulm A-I Moon 18, the XenoTeam is dispatched there and due to its perfect habitability a colony is established there as well.

By the end of June the Iroquois Imperium regards Humanity as a friendly Empire and will share their future GeoSurvey data. In August the San Remo Hegemony granted trade access to Humanity.

3 new gated jump points were discovered in Kiel. The first leads to Lübeck, a binary without any other bodies. The second leads to Flensburg, which has one sun with 3 terrestrial planets inside the habitable zone. The third one leads to Neumünster, another single star system, this one with 2 terrestrial planets inside the habitable zone. All jump points are already gated on both sides.

At the end of September the first research station outside of the Earth starts its work, Beta Shields are being researched on Dresden A-II due to the alien facility providing a 40% bonus to defensive research. In addition Dresden A-II is a perfectly habitable world and has enough free workers.

In mid-October the fourth and final jump point (gates again) is found in Kiel. With gates to 4 systems Kiel turns out to be a major hub. Exploration will focus there for now and a tanker is moved there. The final gate leads to Rostock, a binary without any interesting features.

In November the XenoTeam is able to identify the race that left the ruins on Ulm A-I Moon 18, they called themselves the Alphecca Federation and their technology was very basic. 6 ancient installations might be recoverable.

Till the end of the year 2 gated jump points were found in Flensburg. The first lead to Schwerin, a level 3 nebula with 1 sun and 1 super jovian and about 100 asteroids.

At the end of the year the Pelican ships are still moving around in Human systems, mostly in Hannover and Bremen, but 21 9.8kt ships are in Sol as well. Their active sensors are not helping with morale, but due to their large number currently nothing can be sone about them...

Yes, but it seems like the Köln aliens (Iroquois) have no other option. I have not observed a single ship of them, so it looks like they have not invented space flight yet. Sooner or later those poor aliens have to be uplifted by a more knowledgeable race ;) I hope to get some intel from my spies, soon.

Those Pelican guys on the other hand really scare me... Fleet exercises in 3 of my sectors with fleets larger than everything I can field at a about even tech level and a lack of minerals to really build a large fleet.

And from the San Remo aliens I have only seen gate builders and survey vessels yet, but those do not seem very impressive.

Completed techs: Internal Confinement Fusion Drive Tech, Heavy Assault Battalion, Fuel Consumption 0.6 liters, Infrared Laser, 10cm Laser Focal Size, Combat Drop Module – Battalion, Beam Fire Control Range 32kkm, 15cm Railgun, Fire Control Speed Rating 5kkm/s, Shield Regen Rate 1.5, Visible Light Laser, 12cm Laser Focal Size

New techs being researched: Infrared Laser, 10cm Laser Focal Size, Combat Drop Module – Battalion, new engines, Fuel Consumption 0.5 liters, Combat Drop Module (Cryo) – Battalion, Cryo Transport – Small, Planetary Sensor Strength 550, 20cm Railgun, Visible Light Laser, 12cm Laser Focal Size, Shield Regen Rate 2, Beam Fire Control Range 40kkm

The second gate in Flensburg leads to Bielefeld. A fairly small binary system with 4 terrestrial planets in the habitable zones of its two suns.

In February research into Internal Confinement Fusion Drive Tech is completed and a batch of new engines are designed. This leads to the development of a new anti-ship missile, the Dorn Mk3 and a new anti-missile missile, the Natter Mk2.

Dorn Mk3 – slightly less speed, 70% more range, 16% higher chance to hit 10kkm/s:
Missile Size: 6 MSP  (0.3 HS)     Warhead: 9    Armour: 0     Manoeuvre Rating: 26

Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 624%   3k km/s 208%   5k km/s 124.8%   10k km/s 62.4%

Natter Mk2 - 24% higher chance to hit 10kkm/s:
Missile Size: 1 MSP  (0.05 HS)     Warhead: 1    Armour: 0     Manoeuvre Rating: 36

Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 1080%   3k km/s 360%   5k km/s 216%   10k km/s 108%

This leads to a improved Missile Boat design as well (1 additional launcher, higher speed, longer range and a slightly lower deployment time):

The heavier ships will follow once larger engines are designed and new recon fighters when a larger/better R1 sensor is designed. But I prefer to keep the engines fairly small in order to save research time for better technology instead using the time for larger engines (at least till a fairly high level of tech).

With close to 300 construction factories brought to and build at New Berlin production of a new Naval Shipyard is started there, afterwards the industrial buildup will continue. On Earth 2 new shipyards are completed and expanded to 2 slipways, Duranium was moved to Earth from New Berlin.

With the retooling complete refitting the Falke-class missile boats is started in April. The Graf Zeppelin Mk2 carriers follow in May. In May an alien Genetic Modification Centre and Technical Details of Genome Sequence Research are recovered from a ruin on Düsseldorf A-I, for now there are no plans to use genetic modification.

In November the GeoTeam on Duisburg A-III found additional deposits of Mercassium and Gallicite in addition to raising the accessibility of Corbomite from 0.1 to 0.5.

Status at the end of 1905:

Earth
(https://s18.directupload.net/images/190823/nnknge5x.jpg)

Except for the mineral situation Earth looks pretty good…
(https://s18.directupload.net/images/190823/zlbhu92j.jpg)

Mars is just a population dump, 23 finance centers are located on Mars and more are slowly build due to 12 construction brigades.

New Berlin is much more interesting, once the other new colonies reach 25m people it will become a destination for colonists again. In addition a commercial shipyard is under construction to build state owned colony ships.

New Berlin’s own minerals are not that great, but together with the other mineral rich planets and moons in the system it will become the main hub of the empire in the medium term.

Duisburg A-III is perfectly habitable and has a +50% bonus to energy research. Once some transports are freed up/additional transports are build some research labs will be transferred from Earth. There are 9.2m free workers and essentially no industry.

Dresden A-II is another colony with former ruins and an anomaly, this one providing +40% bonus to defense research and due to a recovered labs it is currently in use researching Beta Shields. Colony Cost is at 1.9 due to lack of Oxygen and the low temperature of -22° Celsius.

Düsseldorf A-I is another colony with ruins and an anomaly, this one providing +80% bonus to logistics/ground combat research. Currently there are still 22 alien installations recoverable (TL 3). Another likely research world in the long run. Colony Cost is just 0.18 due to low temperature (-14° C).

Ulm A-I Moon 18 is yet another colony with ruins and a research anomaly - +30% construction/production. Due to its perfect habitability and fairly hard to access minerals a good candidate for another research world. 6 low tech (TL 1) alien installations might be recoverable.

And finally Köln A-III, this is the homeworld of the Iroquois Imperium who are a prime target for assimilation into the Kaiserreich. They lack space ships and due to this it seems doubtful that they are technically advanced. Humanity is currently building its first Heavy Assault Infantry, are refitting their troop transports and will soon start to develop assault drop shuttles. There is a Human espionage team on the surface, but so far nothing has been heard from them. Köln’s Colony Cost is @0.56 for Humans.

Overall the situation is decent. There are mineral shortages all over the place, but currently the alien empires encountered are peaceful – most importantly the Federation of Pelican – in order to spice things up a little bit I will have to do something about it soon, before Humanity gets too strong.

That’s it for today…

By mid-July the survey program is restarted after most vessels have completed their refits and overhauls. GravSurvey of Bonn is started and the GeoSurvey of Kiel will be continued. A little bit later news reaches Earth that the espionage team on the Iroquois homeworld has been killed in action. Other methods to learn about those aliens are currently being worked on…

BTW, I can not remember, does cargo handling help with drop pods as well, or just normal troop transports?

After trying to establish a Kepler jump scout as a gateway into Osnabrück and a refueling point for survey ships a ship is detected which is identified as a Robot ship. The Kepler jumps right out of Osnabrück again. The ship is labeled as a Agincourt-class, it has never been seen before and has a thermal signature of more than 1.2k.

In August a ungated jump point is found in Bonn, leading to Schweinfurt, which has a gate back to Bonn. Schweinfurt is a binary, has a couple of planets, moons and asteroids. There is 1 terrestrial planets in orbit around Schweinfurt-A inside the habitable zone. A second jump point leads to Bamberg, which is gated on the Bamberg side. Bamberg has a single sun with several planets and moons. There is a terrestrial planet inside the habitable zone as well.

At the end of October a ungated jump point is found in Bamberg. This jump point leads to the München system, which is already known, but has not been surveyed yet. The recovery of alien ruins on Düsseldorf A-III has been completed. Besides lots of infrastructure and some minerals 3 tracking stations, 40 maintenance facilities, 3 construction factories, 6 mines, 8 automines, 1 mass driver, 2 terraforming installations, 1 research lab, 1 gene center, 1 ground force training facility, 1 ordnance, 1 fighter and 1 fuel factories have been recovered. With just 0.3m workers there is currently a shortage of close to 4m workers.

With the refitting of the Kondor-class carriers completed a large fleet exercise is started, involving 2 Kondor carriers, 4 Graf Zeppelin carriers, 20 Falke missile boats, 2 R100 Radar FACs, 4 R1 Radar recon fighters, 20 Fokker R2 fighters.

In November research into shields has been completed and the new Scharnhorst-class cruiser is designed. Cruisers are supposed to be able to operate independent of other ships, but can be used to support carrier task forces as well. Retooling is started on Earth.

Well, I managed to get in 9 large caliber guns and 6 smaller ones, but that’s where the RL similarities end, but later Scharnhorsts will get closer to the original I hope and be re-classed as (small) battleships.
