War in the 21st century is a terrible thing.
Some still debate what was the trigger, and some argued that the war started in the early part of the century, and just never ended, until it suddenly did. On November 11, 2038 the world ended for billions of humans. By 2045, 6 billion where dead but the world had cobbled together five blocks of surviving nations. The Trans Pacific partnership, the North American Union, China, Russia, and the Council of states. However the environmental and physical damage to earth was massive, and only 800 million survived. However the survival of the species was guaranteed by the work of Gideon Wessex, a Anglo-american who discovered how to grow food in the wasted lands of earth, and how to generate the power to keep the cities lighted. However his company held a monopoly on some of the key items needed to feed the starving earth, and he called forward representatives from all major powers and made a Faustian bargain. He would sell the needed chemicals at cost to each of the nations, in return they would form a new world government, that him as emperor, and they could send representatives to a imperial senate, which had oversight on his actions. Each of the five powers were given leeway on internal governing. And then he leaked it to the press. The concept of cheap food for all was too strong for the starving mass of humanity, and the stability afforded by the Imperial peace has allowed for investments to once again be made.
