Thanks to everyone who responded.   Unfortunately I'd already done a system restore before I read any of these replies and lost out on some possibly easier ways to fix the problem.

Also, I'm aware that overwriting newer . dlls is generally a bad idea.   Like I said in my post I was letting it overwrite them when I installed it a second time to see if it would fix some errors I was getting.

You will find the list of .dll's that the installer loads in the setup.lst file.  You will most likely have to go to an MS support site to get the correct up to date versions.

In the future it would be advisable to pay attention to the dialog boxes that popup during installation.  In the case of these .dll's they query whether you want the version that is currently installed left in place instead of overwritten if the version date is newer on your system.

You might be able to do some kind of repair installation, or there might be something out there that makes sure all of your system .   dll files are current to your windows installation.     Exploring your windows installation disk might provide you with the replaced .   dll files, and you could try to copy them over to your .   dll folder.    Though I'm not sure if you can access the .   dll files on the windows installation disk, and I don't have mine handy at the moment to check for myself.     Another possible solution would be to go and download something like Visual Studio Express 2010, from Microsoft and install it, that might contain all of the current versions of the needed .   dll and overwrite the out of date ones.     This is just a hunch though.

Edit: Also, last ditch effort before having to reinstall windows.   Find someone with a relatively clean, up-to-date version of windows, that you trust, and have them throw a copy of all the system32 . dll files into a . rar file or . zip file and then just copy them over to your system32 dir.

I installed SA on my win7 box last weekend and got similar messages (~"Do you want to keep this DLL").  While Googling around to make sure that "this" meant "the (newer) existing", I noticed a microsoft site saying that the replaced DLLs should be backed up and the event logged as part of the process.  So I would recommend looking around the microsoft site and try to figure out where to find the log/undo stuff.

EDIT:  SA = "Starfire Assistant", the parent of Aurora; I'm pretty sure Steve is still using the same installer.

Aha - someone else that keeps going back to SA as well!  In some ways I still prefer it to Aurora - mainly because i can play with others remotely

Unfortunately it is a Microsoft installer, not a bespoke one. The only files I provide are the image files, the exe and the database. I don't specify any DLLs. It is the standard install program provided with Microsoft Visual Studio 97 if that helps. My advice to people in the past has been to keep newer files but obviously you are past that point. Can you do a system restore?

When I installed the game the installer asked if I wanted to overwrite some .  dll system files.    I let it overwrite them the second time I tried installing it an attempt to get some error messages that were popping up a lot to go away (they didn't).

The problem is that my graphics are now all messed up on other games(and playing videos is wonky as well).    I have tried reinstalling my video card drivers, reinstalling Direct X (it said that it was up to date and didn't reinstall anything), reinstalling several of my games(one of them repaired c++ redistributibal supposedly) and running windows update.    Nothing has fixed the problem so far.

Does anyone know what the .  dll files that the installer was trying to overwrite are and where/how can I get them back?

Running windows 7 64bit by the way.

edit* Cleaned up the post. . .   I was pretty tired when I wrote it and didn't really go over it before posting.
