Geo teams doing first surveys
« on: January 12, 2017, 03:50:07 PM »
It would be fun for role playing at least if Geo teams could carry out the first Geological surveys on a planet.  Would be good for conventional starts.

When looking at the mechanics in real life, it makes sense the original survey is space/air based. As TN material should be giving off some form of radiation, it should be simple to detect concentrations in the planets' crust. The Geo-survey team do a longer, more in depth look at the planet by searching farther down (possibly down to the mantle or upper core) to detect any more concentrations that could be usable/reachable.
Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

From a practical stand point surface based must come second or where do you know where to do the drilling? Even something tiny like Phobos would take an age if you simply landed and started to poke holes all over to find the shiny stuff. If you did want to run it as a more RP thing though then design a ship that is setup as a geosurvey vessel and team carrier. Throw in a cargo module to represent all the drills and so forth, add in some luxury cabins to show recreational facilities and have it allowed to carry a single geo team only. Make sure this is the only thing you use to conduct surveys and you are all set.

To add to that, maybe there could be a new conditional order, "if minerals found>drop off geology team".

Good idea. Will also need "Pick up Geology where survey completed".

I survey even planets where no minerals have been found...
Also, if you are going to add these new commands, could you please add the "all teams" versions? Ideally you would have
- drop off all geology teams
- if minerals found>drop off all geology teams
- Pick up Geology teams where survey completed

That way, all possible uses are covered.
Personally, I survey with 2-4 teams per planet. So I'd really love commands to drop off all teams and then pick them up when the survey is finished, and move on to another planet. Would save so much time and so many interrupts...
